Arsenal – Chelsea

1. In case you were unaware that two games between the top four teams in the country is a big deal, Sky have helpfully monikered today 'GRAND SLAM SUNDAY'. Man Utd have won the first part of today's special event, nowit is the turn of London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal to do battle.

2. Ashley Cole is sure to receive a festively cheery welcome from the Gunners fans as he appears at the Emirates for the first time. Chelsea start with just Andriy Shevchenko up front, Arsenal have Emmanuel Adebayor operating as a lone striker with Alexander Hleb just behind him.

3. Chelsea start the game. Good atmosphere from the sounds of it in the Emirates although Ashley Cole's mother may not agree with that given the choice ditties already being belted out about her son.

4. 2'

   Arsenal play their way our up the park with typical precision passing and the move ends with the crowd screaming for handball against Cole. It isn't given, but a foul to Chelsea is when Sagna brings Cole to the floor.

5. 5'

   Ashley Cole comes across the advancing Mathieu Flamini and brings him down as he approached the Chelsea goal. No foul though.

6. 6'

   Flamini is being spoken to by the ref following a challenge on Lampard. No action is taken though.

7. 7'

   It is fast paced stuff here - and Eboue is too quick for Lampard who trips the Arsenal man giving away a free-kick in a dangerous position.

8. 9'

   Lampard it is who heads behind the free-kick for a corner. Fabregas takes it but it is headed away. Arsenal relaunch it in to the Chelsea penalty area but Alex does well to clear the ball.

   Good tackle by Clichy on Shevchenko who seemed to dither on the ball.

10. 11'

    Fabregas and Hleb play two one-two's in and around the Chelsea penalty area but can't find a way through. The ball is re-worked out to Adebayor who fires wildly over the bar.

11. 12'

    Alex looks a little unsure with a header back towards Cech but gets away with it.

    Shaun Wright-Phillips manages to release the building pressure on the Chelsea goal with a break up the park and tries a speculative long-range effort when he should have used the support he had alongside him.

13. 14'

    It has been nearly all Arsenal so far but Chelsea have stood firm in the face of the Gunners slick passing moves.

14. 16'

    Fabregas starts a nice passing move up the park which ends when Ashley Cole goes in for a full-blooded challenge on Sagna. Cole has put in a decent performance so far.

15. 18'

    Lampard executes a clever dummy which allows the ball to reach Ashley Cole out on the left. He gets a cross in but seems to be limping after some contact from a tackle by Sagna.

16. 19'

    Great covering play from Toure who beats Shevchenko to a ball after Flamini had carelessly conceded possession in midfield allowing Chelsea to break.

17. 21'

    Adebayor catches Ashley Cole with a high challenge. The foul is a popular one around north London, if not the booking Adebayor is justifiably shown for his endeavours.

18. 23'

    Hleb is clumsily brough to earth by Paulo Ferreira and the free-kick is thirty-five yards from Chelsea's goal. It is played short to Toure who blasts it against the Chelsea wall.

19. 25'

    Joe Cole is brought down on the edge of Arsenal's box and seemed to do so a little too easily. Chelsea aren't complaining but they might be now after Frank Lampard skies a shot closer to the corner flag than the intended target.

    Terry has put in a very firm tackle on Fabregas which brings a furious reaction from the Spaniard and for which Terry receives a yellow card.

21. 29'

    Frank Lampard was booked in the same incident and this game is developing in to a rather feisty affair.

    Fabregas takes the free-kick but is is some way off target.

23. 31'

    Terry has put in another strong challenge and needs to be careful how he treads this afternoon.

    Shevchenko hits a great swerving strike which Almunia just about gets away, although he looked rather unconvincing. The corner comes, but Arsenal get it away.

    Eboue and Fabregas this time show their fancy footwork with some nice one touch stuff but again Chelsea's defence are equal to the task and Terry gets it away. He's hurt though, and Eboue now is booked for the lateness of his challenge.

    Terry is limping towards the touchline for some treatment.

    Rosicky comes inside from the left and, with three Chelsea men closing around him, whips in a shot towards Cech's near post which is about a foot wide of goal.

    Terry has sunk to his knees and his game is now over. Tal Ben-Haim comes on to replace him.

    Eboue's shot from twenty yards out brings groans from the Arsenal fans as it flies well wide of goal. There have not been too many clear cut chances so far for either side but Arsenal have had more of the ball.

    Some determined tackling going in from both sets of players and the commitment is there for all to see. Well, for those with access to a television set anyway.

    Mikel and Flamini bicker this time about some perceived injustice and all over the park there are players harbouring grudges about tackles made or decisions not given. It would not be a surprise to see a red card in the second half.

    Wright-Phillips tries a deft flick for Shevchenko which doesn't come off and gifts Arsenal possession.

    Wonderful tackle from Ferreira on Rosicky who showed him too much of the ball. Corner to Arsenal.

    GOAL: The corner coms over from Fabregas and has the normally reliable Cech flapping at the cross. He totally misses the ball and leaves William Gallas to gleefully head the ball home from a couple of yards out against his old team.

    HALF-TIME: Arsenal probably deserve the lead but you wonder if John Terry had still been on the park (and on the Chelsea far post for the corner) if it might have made a difference. They are certainly going to miss him in the second period.

    The two teams are back on the park and Arsenal get the game underway again. Chelsea are going to have to push forward a bit more in this half and the pace of Shaun Wright-Phillips could help them do some damage.

    Clichy puts in a good tackle on Ferreira to concede a throw.

    Arsenal give the ball away to Lampard who tries to cross for Shevchenko but puts too much on the ball.

    Apparantly John Terry has broken his metartarsal, which, as we all know, is not a good thing at all.

    Rosicky shows he can defend by taking the ball from Ferreira on the right hand side.

    Ferreira fires in a great ball but Almunia stands firm and gratefully collects it.

    Arsenal have not lost in over forty games where they have taken the lead, so statistics are not with Chelsea.

    The crowd roar Arsenal on but Chelsea win a free-kick when Flamini downs Lampard.

    Great tackle from Alex on Adebayor and then Joe Cole does well to get back and make a challenge. Chelsea are penned back a bit at the minute.

    Hleb, Fabregas and Adebayor combine well around the Arsenal penalty area and the Arsenal fans scream in vain for a penalty as they claim Fabregas was blocked.

    Chelsea corner which Lampard takes but first Ben Haim then Alex squander the chance to get an effort on goal when the ball comes to them.

    Adebayor battles away up the park and calls for a corner which does not come. The game could do with someone putting their foot on the ball and slowing things down a bit. It is unlikely to happen though.

    Wright-Phillips flashes a ball across the edge of the six yard box after superb play from Joe Cole but Shevchenko is nowhere near it.

    Mikel has hit a wonderful shot from twenty-five yards across Almunia but it is a good height for the keeper who parries it away.

    Van Persie is warming up on the touchline and could be about to join the fun.

    Rosicky plays a one-two off a blue shirted figure before trying to thread a ball towards Hleb whom he just can't reach.

    The referee appears to have been booked Kolo Toure after Mathieu Flamini made a tackle. And they are such similar looking chaps.

    It was actually Flamini who received the booking, quite rightly too. A rash challenge from behind.

    Great tackle from Eboue, before he is felled by Joe Cole. The ref waves play on but then Fabregas is then pushed out of play by Mikel. The ref now takes the time to brandish a yellow card in the direction of Joe Cole.

    Eboue has been replaced by Robin van Persie.

    Van Persie's first two contributions are a clever reverse pass which doesn't find an Arsenal man and then, seconds later, a snap shot which Cech does well to get to (although he fumbles causing mild panic in the Chelsea defence). Van Persie has slotted in perfectly to the game's tempo.

    Free-kick to Arsenal after Ben-Haim clatters in to Fabregas. The Israelis is booked for the challenge.

    Wright-Phillips has missed a glorious chance after Arsenal can't clear a high ball. It finds the little winger via the head of Gallas but Wright-Phillips opts for power at the expense of precision and the shot is disappointingly wide of the goal. Chelsea's best chance of the match.

    A marvellous break from Arsenal involving Adebayor and Hleb who squares for Van Persie. The striker sets his sights on goal but Lampard has rushed back to put in enough of a challenge to put him off.

    Great play from Rosicky on the left wing but Alex is tugging his shirt and concedes a free-kick.

    Shevchenko appeared to received a nudge in the back as the ball is played in to Arsenal's penalty area but the ref either didn't see it or didn't think so.

    Flamini uses his chest in his penalty area to block a Ferreira cross.

    Ashley Cole puts in a good tackle on Adebayor who would have been clear on goal. Mikel though has been booked for two sneaky fouls in quick succession.

    Van Persie has prodded home but it is not a goal as Rosicky, who squared it for him, was in an offside position.

    Chelsea are attacking in numbers and leaving lots of space at the back. It is space Rosicky is unable to capatalise on though as his floated cross is too close to Cech.

    Cech makes an incredible double save from Van Persie and then Fabregas which will go some way to making amends for his costly first-half error.

    Great ball in towards Shevchenko who totally makes a mess of a header which he really could, and should, have scored from.

    Arsenal again have the ball in the net but, once more, it does not count.

    A fantastic free-kick from Shevchenko evades the Arsenal wall but is too close to Almunia who is able to deflect it behind for a corner.

    Chelsea can't make anything from the corner but Arsenal go straight up the park and try to finish the game off. At one point there are five red shirts against two blue, which is sure to have Arsene Wenger furious at such a late stage of this game.

    Fabregas misses a glorious chance after sub Bendtner passes for him. Fabregas then kicks out at Cole who lashes out at the Spaniard. Both players appear to have been booked.

    FULL-TIME: The goal from ex-Blues man William Gallas gives Arsenal a rare victory over Chelsea in an absorbing game which could perhaps have gone either way towards the end.
