    Keane bullies Zenden off the ball to launch another United counter. Giggs finds Scholes, whose shot loops off Southgate to Van Nistelrooy. The Dutchman turns but his shot also ricochets into Schwarzer's hands

    Giggs dwells horribly on another chance, allowing Ehiogu to step in. Boro break down the right through Mills, whose cross is cut out expertly by Ferdinand, calm in the storm

    Phil Neville goes into the book for a late challenge - and suddenly it's fireworks as Fletcher sees his second yellow for clipping Zenden

     And that's it. United survive a torrid final quarter to take three points and establish a four-pont lead at the top ahead of Arsenal's visit to Southampton tomorrow night

     A real blood-and-thunder encounter at the Riverside. Fortune's deflected strike was decisive and United were denied a glorious second by a combination of Schwarzer's hand and the crossbar. But they stood firm after Fletcher's sending off, with Keane outstanding and Ferdinand showing how much he will be missed
