   United's first attack breaks down as the home crowd chant the name of their absent captain 'keano'.

   Geremi drives forward for Boro, but Silvestre - recovered from a neck injury - puts the ball out for a throw.

   Van Nistelrooy spins, looks to play in Scholes but plays the ball the wrong side of his teammate.

   Greening clips the ball through the United defence for Maccarone, but the Italian is offside.

   Beckham chips the ball down the line for Neville - who wins a corner.

    Beckham is caught offside by a return ball.

    Veron plays a ball over the top for Van Nistelrooy to chase.....

    Geremi jumps for a header with Silvestre and catches the French defender in the face. Freekick.

    The pressure is coming from United at the moment, Boro are still feeling their way into the match.

    Maccarone treis to clip a ball down the line for Job and Silvestre heads clear for United.

    Van Nistelrooy runs at Ehiogu and scuffs a low 20-yard shot into the arms of Schwarzer.

    Blanc and Greeneing go in for a crunching tackle and United's French veteran is polaxed.

    Blanc gets some treatment on the pitch but looks fine to continue.

    Job attacks form the restart and plays a one-two with Maccarone on the edge of the box......

    ......Job runs into the box and Barthez dives at his feet to snuff out the chance.

    Veron treis to do too much in midfield and Boateng gets in a great tackle. Queudrue puts a ball into the box but Ferdinand clears.

    Giggs runs at the Boro defence and draws a foul from Boateng. The freekick is taken quickly and wasted by Veron.

    Butt ends a period of United possession with an aimless hoof into the box, which Schwarzer collects.

    Veron mops up in midfield and United attack again. the Argentine finds Neville in a crossing position on the right.....

    ...the ball in is to deep and Southgate heads clear for Boro.

    Job attacks down the right for Boro and Ferdinand clears any danger with a majestic piece of defending.

    Queudrue whips the ball into the area for Job and Blanc makes an important interception.

    United break with Giggs, the Welsh wizard dribbles his way through Boro and into the box....

    .....He hits a wicked shot just wide of Schwarzer's post.

    A looped ball into the box finds Van Nistelrooy baring down on goal under pressure from Ehiogu.....

    ....Van Nistelrooy blasts over, but he was being man-handled by Ehiogu and the ref blows for a penalty.

    Van Nistelrooy steps up to take the spot kick.....

    Ehiogu gets booked and he and Boro face an uphill battle at Old Trafford.

    Boro win a corner but Barthez punches the ball clear ahead of the on-rushing Ehiogu and Southgate.

    Maccarone's first touch lets him down and Silvestre thwarts another potential Boro attack.

    United in control now as Scholes combines with Veron in midfield.

    Veron attempts a slide-rule pass through to Van Nistelrooy but Southgate cuts it out.

    Beckham lofts a ball to the back post for Butt. the ref blows for a freekick as Butt climbs all over his man to get to the ball.

    United with some slick passing on the edge of the box and Giggs chips the ball inot the box for Van Nistelrooy......

    ...the ball bounces off the Dutchman's head and Southgate is in quickly to clear the considerable danger.

    Silvestre kicks the sole of Boateng's boot as the duo challenge for the ball and needs some attention.

    He returns to the pitch as the Old Trafford crowd continues its constant chanting.

    Queudrue hits a low cross into the area from the left and Ferdinand is forced to hoof the ball out for a throw.

    Boateng mis-controls in front of his back four but battles hard to win the ball back from Veron.

    Boro forge an attack down the right and Maccarone gifts Job with a shooting opportunity.....

    ....the Cameroonian blasts his 25-yard shot over the bar.

    Stockdale drifts a teasing cross in from the right and confusion reigns between Barthez and his defence.....

    ....The ball bounces between the two parties and Blanc eventually deals carmly with the situation and plays the ball out of defence.

    A good response from Boro after going a goal down.

    But United attack again. Veron finds Scholes, who sets Giggs up for a 20-yard strike.......

    .....his rasping drive whistles just wide of Schwarzer's left-hand post.

    The ref blows for half-time and United go in 1-0 up at the break.

64. Boro boss McClaren has a chance to reorganise his team for a second-half assault on the United goal.

65. Meanwhile, Red Devils manager Ferguson will be asking for more of the same from his side.

    Both sides are out for the restart with no changes to either team. Boro get the second-half underway.

    Silvestre uses his hand to control a poor pass and Boro have a freekick on the halfway line.

    Queudrue clears up after a poor clearance form Southgate, but Geremi is fouled and the pressure is off.

    Silvestre plays the ball in-field to Giggs, who tees-up Scholes for a long shot.....

    Geremi does one too many step overs and the ball rolls out of play whilst the Cameroon international dances around it.

    Former United player Greening breaks for Boro, but is brushed of the ball by Veron and the ref ignores his appeals for a foul.

    Silvestre hits a wicked cross into a packed Boro box but the defence heads clear.

    Boro attack down the right and again Geremi tries to be too clever and the ball runs out of play.

    Scholes and Butt attempt some slick passing through the Boro defence, they are only thwarted after their third cheeky one-two.

    Giggs drives down the centre of the pitch and cuts out to the left to deliver a cross......

    ....his low cross is easily cut out at the near post. Good build-up, poor delivery.

    Another patient United build-up breaks down on the edge of the Boro box as their defence remains firm.

    Job combines with Geremi (who manages to keep the ball on the pitch) and the midfielder chips the ball forward to Maccarone.....

    ....Maccarone is caught between two United defenders and loses possession.

    United attack again, but despite all their skill and trickery still can't break the Boro defence.

    Beckham spots the run of Van Nistelrooy and drops the ball perfectly over the Boro defence....

    .....the striker's first touch is poor one as he attempts to bring the ball down and Ehiogu recovers for Boro.

    Beckham breaks, drives down the right and feeds Scholes on the edge of the box....

    ...the midfielder chinks into the box and skips past three tackles before pulling the ball back for an unmarked Giggs to shoot.....

    ...Giggs scuffs the ball well wide of the goal. That's the worst shot I've ever seen, well nearly.

    Barthez collects a Geremi cross and sets Beckham off in attack. His cross-field ball is too strong for Van Nistelrooy and the attack breaks down.

    Ferdinand hoofs the ball up-field and Beckham is fouled on the edge of the box. The freekick is taken quickly and wasted.

    Boro attack with Job and Ferdinand's last ditch tackle nudges the ball to Maccarone in the box.....

    ...the Italian snatches at his shot and the final result rivals Giggs' poor effort.

    McClaren looks to be contemplating a change for Boro.

    United make the first change and Solskjaer, coming on to deafening cheers, replaces goalscorer Van Nistelrooy.

    Boro build an attack, but as the ball is played forward to Maccarone Ferdiand is there again with an excellent tackle.

    Boro make a change. Queudrue is replaced by Marinelli and Maccarone makes way for Wheelan.

    Giggs loses possession and Boateng hits a powerful shot that Barthez just manages to turn around his post.

    Ferdinand heads the resulting corner clear but Boro haven't given up hope of a goal yet.

    Geremi flicks the ball over the United defence for Wheelan. The flag goes up for offside.

    Southgate brings the ball out of defence and continues his forward run as Boro look for an equalizer.

    United regain possession and slowdown the frantic pace of the match as time ticks away.

     Scholes chases a longball into the box but Schwarzer rushes out to claim.

     That's Scholes' last action of the match and he is replaced by Forlan.

     United are starting to look a little edgey as the final whistle approaches and Boro are pushing forward.

     United counterattack down the right with Veron and Beckham. Boateng is there again to rescue Boro.

     Wheelan twist and turns on the left as his teammates pour into the box waiting for a cross.....

     ...when it eventually arrives Ferdinand heads the ball clear.

     Veron feeds Beckham on the right and he whips a cross into the box......

     ....Solskjaer waits on the back post but Stockdale hooks the ball clear.

     Forlan and Solskjaer try to pick their way through the Boro defence, but can't get off a shot in a crowded penalty area.

     Barthez takes his time over a goalkick as Boro manager McClaren looks on anxiously.

     Veron gets booked after a series of dodgey challenges.

     Job breaks for Boro and plays the ball to Geremi on the right, who delivers a cross.....

     ...Job has continued his run but his header ends up in the hands of Barthez.

     United make another change and O'Shea, a defender, replaces Beckham, a midfielder.

     Greening starts what could be a final attack for Boro and drives to the edge fo the box......

     ..his blocked shot falls to Job, whose shot is also blocked at the expense of a corner.

     Barthez comes out to claim the ball and is fouled by Ehiogu as he spills the ball. Freekick.

     Barthez looks to have picked up a knock, but he is on his feet after some treatment.

     Boro win another corner and this must be their final attack........

     ...as the ball drops into a crowded area O'Shea rises above the rest and heads the ball clear for United.

     The final whistle goes and United have escaped a late Boro onslaught with a 1-0 victory.

121. Three points moves Manchester United into fourth place in the Premiership, level on eight points with Arsenal and Liverpool.

122. Boro can take solace from another resolute performance in which the only goal came from the penalty spot.
