Manchester United – Chelsea

1. Will Chelsea eclipse Manchester United's points record with victory at Old Trafford? Join us from 20.00 BST to find out!

2. Team news: Huth replaces Terry in the heart of the Chelsea defence; the return of Van Nistelrooy is one of six changes for United.

3. Mourinho shakes Roy Keane's hand as the players wait in the tunnel. It seems to matter more to Jose than it does to Keane, who looks stone-faced.

4. The United players for a Guard of Honour for the Chelsea players as they emerge from the tunnel. The players clap, though the fans make their own statement with a chorus of boos. Nice touch. Very sporting.

5. Mourinho and Ferguson share a hug in the dugout. There seems to be genuine respect between the two.

6. 1'

United kick-off. They seem to be lining up 4-5-1, with Van Nistelrooy up front on his own, and Rooney shoved out on the left wing.

7. 2'

Ronaldo drifts in from his position on the right. He collects the ball, cuts in to the middle and fires a right-foot shot a couple of yards wide of Cudicini's post.

8. 2'

Cudicini is put under pressure from Scholes as he attempts to punch a deflected Rooney cross clear. The goalkeeper wins a free-kick, rather fortunately.

9. 3'

The conditions look excellent; the pitch seems to be in great shape, and the game is being played under very pleasant Manchester skies.

10. 4'

Glen Johnson is playing in an unfamiliar right-midfield role, in front of Geremi, who continues at right-back.

11. 5'

Sloppy passing means that the game hasn't really settled in to a rhythm yet. Both sides are finding their way in to the match.

12. 6'

Keane is fouled by Tiago. He plays the ball short to Ronaldo, who fires a low shot goalwards from around 35 yards out. Cudicini is down early and palms the swerving shot around the post for a corner.

13. 7'

GOAL! Van Nistelrooy turns the ball home from six yards after Rooney's shot from the corner of the penalty area came through a crowd of players.

14. 8'

The Chelsea players were looking at the linesman for an off-side decision, though replays show that Van Nistelrooy was level when Rooney cracked the low shot across goal.

15. 9'

It was only the 14th league goal that Chelsea have conceded this season, and came about from some sloppy defensive work; Rooney had plenty time to get his shot away, and no-one had tracked the run of Van Nistelrooy.

16. 10'

Good tackle from Neville on the edge of the penalty area as Cole attempted to flick the ball past him and move in on goal. United look hungry and determined tonight. Hungry like a fox.

17. 11'

Johnson wins a foul as he collected a knock-down from Gudjohnson on the right-edge of the penalty box. Lampard curls a good ball in to the six-yard box, but a United head clears.

18. 12'

Chelsea are beginning to knock the ball around well, though United are very organised and disciplined in defence.

19. 13'

Huth looks very composed tonight. He, Cudicini and Geremi combine to play their way out of a spot of trouble after Ronaldo chased down a Scholes through-ball.

20. 14'

Chelsea again seem to lack natural width tonight, and much of their play is coming through the middle. That's making it quite easy for United to defend against.

21. 15'

Good close control from Gudjohnson and Lampard as they work the ball to Cole on the edge of the area, but Ferdinand is quick to block his first-time shot.

22. 16'

GOAL! Tiago curls an amazing shot past Carroll, a great right-foot shot from around 30 yards.

23. 17'

Replays from behind the goal show that the ball swerved and dipped, but Carroll really should have done a lot better. He didn't make any effort whatsoever.

24. 18'

Rooney is fouled by Geremi on the United left, around 35 yards out. Ronaldo whips the ball in and Lampard's flicked header flies a yard or so over Cudicini's crossbar.

25. 19'

So, a decent start to this game has resulted in two goals. The fans inside Old Trafford seem to have been stunned a little by Tiago's equaliser.

26. 20'

There hasn't been a great deal of goal-mouth action other than the two goals, but it is turning in to an absorbing contest.

27. 21'

Scholes almost flicks a Keane pass through to Rooney, but Carvalho read the move and intercepted on the edge of the area. United are having most of the ball at the moment.

28. 22'

Ronaldo looks aggreived not to win a free-kick when he is out-muscled by Gallas as he cut inside from the right wing.

29. 23'

A cute flick from Cole is picked up by United, but Chelsea are quick to get back in numbers. Mourinho screams his displeasure at Cole's extravagance.

30. 24'

The pace of the game - which was never explosive to begin with - has slowed considerably in the last few minutes.

31. 25'

Scholes and Rooney combine to work Neville some space down the right. He sends over a good cross, which Carvalho is forced to put out for a corner.

32. 26'

Ferdinand gets his head on the end of the corner and turns the ball goalwards, but Gallas clears before Scholes can pounce on the loose ball.

33. 27'

Lampard almost slides a killer pass through to Gudjohnson, but Silvestre, at full stretch, manages to intercept. Tiago almost picks up the loose ball, but Brown clears.

34. 28'

Another incisive passing move from Chelsea, though it ends when Cole can't quite collect Gudjohnson's pass. There's not a lot of spice in this match at the moment.

35. 29'

Silvestre sends over a cross from a deep position on the left wing. Scholes flicks the ball on, but Ronaldo hadn't gambled on it and Gallas clears.

36. 30'

Keane is booked for a late challenge on Cole. The United skipper doesn't seem to have too many complaints about the decision. He seems very calm tonight.

37. 31'

The pace of the game is betraying the lack of meaning it carries for both sides. There's been plenty pretty play in midfield, but a palpable lack of drive in the final third.

38. 32'

Rooney has a shot from 25 yards that Carvalho deflects for a corner. Chelsea clear the danger and break, but seemingly with no real purpose or heart.

39. 33'

Even the fans don't seem to care any more; you can almost hear individual conversations in the stands.

40. 34'

Great defending from Carvalho as he keeps pace with Van Nistelrooy, chasing a long pass over the top of the Chelsea defence. The Portuguese defender sticks out a boot at the last moment to deny Van Nistelrooy a shooting chance inside the area.

41. 35'

Huth takes a shot in the sensitives. He stays down for a moment, but is soon back on his feet. He winces a little, gives them a little rub, and on we go.

42. 36'

Rooney earns himself a chat with referee Poll after protesting long and loud about a free-kick decision that went against him. Throughout the lecture looks surly and has his hands on his hips. He then spits on the floor and jogs off.

43. 38'

Oooh! At last, some meaningful action. Gudjohnsen and Cole combine, Cole takes the ball past Brown and curls a right-foot shot inches wide of Carroll's post.

44. 39'

Rooney wins a free-kick after a good tustle with Geremi down the United left. The United player attempts to drag Gallas to the floor, but fails.

45. 40'

Van Nistelrooy requires some treatment after being caught by Carvalho. After a sip of water and a tender word from the United physio, the gangly Dutchman is back in the thick of the action.

46. 41'

Rooney is trying to inject a bit of fire and passion in to the match, involving himself in some good tussles with Makalele and Geremi.

47. 43'

Good defending from Johnson. He robs Scholes 30 yards out and sets up a Chelsea counter-attack. It's all done with such apathy, however, that it barely seems worth it.

48. 44'

Gallas is quick to slide in and deny Neville the chance to cross from the right. From the resulting throw, United work the ball to the left and Rooney has a side-foot shot blocked on the edge of the six-yard box.

49. 45'

HALF-TIME: A fairly insipid half of football. Goal-poaching from Van Nistelrooy put United in front, a Carroll blunder from an excellent Tiago drive levels things.

50. 45'

The players are back out on the pitch, and Chelsea re-start the match. Hopefully both managers have put a rocket up their teams at half-time and we might have a game worthy of some attention.

51. 46'

Gudjohnsen reverses a lovely through-ball to Cole, but Carroll is quickly off his line to dive at the feet of the young England star. Cole requires treatment after falling heavily under the challenge.

52. 47'

Gallas bursts forward, cuts a low cross back in the the area, but Gudjohnsen can't get the ball out of his feet quick enough to get a shot away. Ferdinand robs him and United break.

53. 48'

Johnson finds himself on-side, un-marked on the edge of the penalty area. He seems to panic a little and forgets to shoot. United then break and Cudicini is forced to dive at the feet of Rooney.

54. 49'

Carroll makes a good save low to his right to keep out a Cole drive from the corner of the area.

55. 50'

Makalele is booked for a foul, 20 yards out. Rooney places the ball but curls his shot over the bar.

56. 51'

It's been a much better start to the half. The match is very open and there seems to be a lot more space in midfield than there was in the first period.

57. 52'

A quick Chelsea counter-attack sees Gudjohnsen fouled as Brown dived in 30 yards out. Great chance for Chelsea to get a shot on target...

58. 52'

...but Huth smashes his shot straight at the wall. Someone looked to have copped that straight in the face. It's lucky the balls they use in the Premiership these days only weigh about 10gms.

59. 53'

Gudjohnsen has been good for Chelsea tonight. He's playing further forward than he has been doing in recent games, but he has been excellent at bringing his team-mates in to play.

60. 54'

Rooney has the chance to run at Geremi, but the Chelsea full-back stays on his feet and defends very well.

61. 55'

Oooh! Fletcher crashes a long shot against the bar with Cudicini beaten. Great effort from the young Scot, hit from about 25 yards out.

62. 56'

Keane sends over a good cross towards Scholes and Van Nistelrooy, but it's slightly over-hit and runs out for a throw on the opposite side.

63. 57'

The pace of the match is much quicker since the interval, and the fans seem to have woken up, too.

64. 58'

Rooney works the ball out to Neville, but with Van Nistelrooy making a great run in the middle, the full-back completely shanks his cross and the ball flies out of play.

65. 59'

Makalele is quick to hoof the ball in to touch after Ronaldo had beaten Geremi and Johnson on the right wing.

66. 60'

Carroll is quick out of his area to clear as Cole races on to a through-ball down the middle.

67. 60'

GOAL! Superb finish from Gudjohnsen, lifting the ball over an on-rushing Carroll after sprinting clear of the United defence.

68. 61'

So Chelsea come from behind to take the lead, though if the game stays this open and at this tempo, I think there'll be more goals here.

69. 62'

Rooney earns another ticking off from referee Poll after disputing a decision.

70. 63'

Lampard is booked after bringing down Ronaldo, running in from the right wing. The ball is worked to Brown, who lofts a cross towards Van Nistelrooy. Cudicini punches clear, and VN is off-side anyway.

71. 64'

Superb control of a long ball from Gudjohnsen almost sets up Cole in the area, though Brown prods the ball back to Carroll.

72. 65'

Oooh! Chelsea almost have a third goal when Gallas unwittingly deflects a Brown clearance inches over Carroll's bar.

73. 66'

The Chelsea players are looking very pleased with themselves at the moment. What a way to end the season; a victory at Old Trafford.

74. 67'

Gudjohsen is complaining to the referee about a perceived shirt-tug as he attempted to chase down a one-two from Joe Cole. Replays show he has a very flimsy case.

75. 68'

Another good passing move from Chelsea ends when Gallas can't quite get on the end of Lampard's precise ball in to the United penalty area. Chelsea are much the better side at the moment.

76. 69'

Keane wins his side a corner when he sneaks around the back of the Chelsea defence, and his attempted cut-back is put behind by Makalele.

77. 70'

Chelsea deal with the corner well, though United come at them again. Silvestre can't beat Geremi, however and Chelsea can clear.

78. 71'

SUB: Saha on, Fletcher off; Jarosik on, Johnson off. An attacking substitution from the home side, who will play more 4-4-2 now. Chelsea's is a more defensive move.

79. 72'

Gallas is furious as the referee rules that he fouled Ronaldo. He is booked for the dissent, and the set-piece is moved forward 10 yards.

80. 73'

Oooh! Keane takes the free-kick quickly, prodding the ball in to the path of Scholes, who cracks a shot just over the bar.

81. 74'

Chelsea will be delighted to close this match out; it will send a signal to United that they're determined to take this season's form in to next.

82. 75'

A rare piece of mis-control from Makalele almost lets Saha in, but he recovers well.

83. 76'

Chelsea's last league double over Manchester United came in 1994, I'm reliably informed. Don't blame me if that stat is wrong. I'm merely the messenger.

84. 77'

Saha collapses in a a heap, holding his head, after challenging for a header with Huth. He needs some treatment, which gives the players a chance to chat amiably for a moment.

85. 78'

Chelsea are being very patient and professional as they try to close out the game. They are moving the ball around well and picking their passes with care.

86. 79'

Scholes finds Ronaldo with a lofted ball over the head of Jarosik, but the youngster's cross is cleared by Huth.

87. 80'

Ronaldo cuts in to the area but slices his right-foot shot well wide of the goal when in a decent position. He holds his head in frustration.

88. 81'

GOAL! Lampard cuts in from the left wing, crosses low and Cole stabs home from six yards out. Replays show he was off-side.

89. 82'

Cole and Ronaldo clash for a moment on the half-way line, though both are keen to extend the olive branch of peace and get on with the game.

90. 83'

Cole's goal was very similar to Van Nistelrooy's at the start of the game, turning home from close range after finding a yard of space in the area. The difference was, however, that VN was on-side; JC wasn't.

91. 84'

United win another free-kick in a good position. This time they elect to clip the ball in to the area, but Ronaldo's cheeky flick is cleared by Gallas.

92. 85'

SUB: Gudjohnsen off, Morais on. The new man is a young Portuguese midfielder, who has made just one appearance previously for Chelsea.

93. 86'

Rooney does well down the left, beating Geremi and lofting a good ball across the six-yard box. Saha attempts an ambitious scissor-kick, but Huth sticks his head where it hurts and clears.

94. 87'

Cole is operating up-front on his own at the moment, though it's United who are having most of the ball. They're not really putting Chelsea under any pressure, though.

95. 88'

SUB: Cole off, McGrath on. A debut for the 17-year-old midfielder. He looks a little like Kanu. His first contribution is to fly out and slide in on Silvestre; good challenge.

96. 89'

Chelsea aren't playing with any forwards at the moment.

97. 90'

United win a free-kick when Huth fouls when challenging for a header. Carvalho heads away for a corner.

98. 91'

Rooney fires the set-piece in to the area, but it's the visitors who emerge with the ball. Lampard breaks but Carroll is quick out of his box to deny him.

99. 92'

FULL-TIME: A better second half from both sides, but it's Chelsea who emerge with the points. Ferguson will be mystified by his team's lack of drive.
