Manchester United – Chelsea

It's a clash of the titans at Old Trafford as Manchester United look to make it "no way, Jose" on the four trophy hunt. Join us from 20.00 GMT

Both managers have opted to field full-strength sides for this evenly-matched Carling Cup semi-final, second leg at Old Trafford, with even Petr Cech appearing in goal in place of Carlo Cudicini for Chelsea.

Chelsea get the game under way, kicking from right to left.

First chance of the match falls Chelsea's way via good wing play from Duff, whose pull-back reaches Lampard, but the England midfield man hooks a half-chance wide.

Sir Alex Ferguson stated pre-match that he expected the game to be a very tight affair, with just the one goal probably seperating the two teams.

United have responded well to that early chance for Chelsea and are now beginning to pressurise the visitors.

Scholes picks up possession deep inside his own half, but his through-ball is overhit and goes out for a goal kick.

This is skipper Keane's second game in the space of four days, but he is suspended though for Saturday's FA Cup tie with Boro.

Robben trips Keane from behind as the United captain attempts to start a counter-attack, but referee Styles just warns the Dutchman.

Giggs's turn now to go on a marauding run, but he finds no way past Ferreira.

Giggs is the only player in this United side to have won this trophy, with Keane needing to win it to complete the full set of English trophies.

Now it is Duff's turn to trip a United player in full flow, leading to a quickly-taken free kick out to Ronaldo on United's right flank and the Portuguese's cross is hacked clear by Terry for the first corner of the game.

But, Ronaldo's right-wing corner is disappointing and easily cleared at his near post by the immense Terry.

Scholes is currently down injured having been caught late on the edge of the box and he looks in trouble, which will be a worry for the home side.

It appears to be a knee injury following a clash with Makelele and it does not look like the 'Ginger Ninja' will be returning to the fray.

However, he appears to have recovered, temporarily at least and is back on the field of play.

Giggs goes on a dribble down the left flank and delivers a great curling centre that Cech comes to claim, at the second attempt.

Despite Cech replacing Cudicini tonight, Mourinho has promised the Italian that if Chelsea make it to Cardiff, then he will play.

This match has stalemate written all over it at present, so prepare yourselves for both extra time and maybe even penalties.

Mistake by last man Silvestre lets Drogba in with a clean run on goal, but referee Styles blows up for a foul by the Ivoray Coast international front man on the France defender - correct decision.

Giggs finds some space in the Chelsea box, but overhits his cross to the back post and Chelsea escape.

It is going to be very difficult for United to break down Chelsea's miserly defence tonight.

Huge penalty claims by United after a foul on Saha by Gallas, but the referee waves away the appeals and having seen the replay, that is the correct decision.

Free kick to United on halfway, taken by Neville and driven into the Chelsea box, but easily cleared by Gallas.

Very little to report in the opening quarter of this match, with neither keeper being required to make a save worthy of the name as yet.

Giggs has won his side a right-wing corner off Terry as the home side step up the pressure on the Blues.

And, the quickly-taken corner catches Chelsea out cold, but unfortunately the ball falls to Neville, unmarked in the area and he opts not to shoot, instead chipping a ball to the back post and out for a throw-in.

Both sides are being allowed to play at the back without being pressurised at all, just like in a European Cup encounter.

What is interesting about this clash is that both sides are playing with two out-and-out wingers and just the one striker, which is very rare indeed in the English game.

Remember that United have not lost a domestic semi-final for 30 years, when Norwich overcame them in this very competition.

GOAL! Lampard gives Chelsea the lead after good build-up play involving Robben and Drogba, who cuts the ball back from the left-hand touchline for the midfielder to stroke the Blues into the lead. Dreadful marking by United, with no one picking up Lampard, which gave him time to pick his spot and he made absolutely no mistake, firing past a helpless Howard and into the corner of the goal.

That is exactly what the game needed and now United need two goals to go through to the final.

A worry for Chelsea, with Drogba currently lying on the floor holding his groin.

Drogba has received some treatment and has jogged rather gingerly back on to the field of play.

United try and catch Chelsea on the counter-attack via the marauding Ronaldo, but having beaten Bridge for pace, the winger over-runs the ball and it goes out of play for a goal kick.

That goal should really open up proceedings one would think, and hope, especially with United needing goals to stay alive.

Free kick in a dangerous area for United after a questionable foul by Lampard on Ronaldo, 25 yards out and in a central position.

But, a dreadful effort by the Portugal international winger goes nearer to the corner flag than Cechs goal.

For the second time in this first half, United have huge claims for a penalty turned down by Mr.Styles, this time after a trip by Bridge on Fortune and on this occasion the home side appear to have been slightly unfortunate.

And to make matters worse, Robben breaks clear with the ball on a counter while United players are still arguing with the referee over that penalty claim, but fortunately for the Red Devils, the Dutch winger cannot make the most of the attack and gives away possession.

Surely with that man Rooney on the bench, it will only be a matter of time before we see the Wunderkind.

Another quick Chelsea break has United concerned, until Ferdinand makes a great recovery tackle on Drogba in the area, otherwise it may have been 2-0 and game over.

However, the Blues have won themselves a left-wing corner nonetheless, taken by Lampard, but overhit to the back post and headed clear by Silvestre.

Old Trafford is virtually silent at present, but the home fans have not exactly had much to cheer about so far.

Ronaldo tries to bring his side level just before the break with a dribble from the left flank and shot from the edge of the box, but yet again the Portuguese pulls his effort horribly wide of Cechs near post.

The fourth official has indicated that there will be just the one minute of time to be added on at the end of this first period.

Well there's no doubt which of the two managers will be the happier going in at the break, but this tie is not over by a long shot.

And that is half-time at Old Trafford, with the visitors leading by a goal to nil and they are 45 minutes away from a place in the Carling Cup final against Liverpool next month.

United get this second period under way, kicking from right to left.

Remember, away goals only count double after extra time in the Carling Cup, unlike in Europe.

Early free kick won by Giggs after a dribble into the heart of the Chelsea back four, before Makelele trips the Welshman.

But Scholes's effort is charged down by the onrushing Chelsea wall, before the ball breaks to Neville, only for the full backs' shot to sail high over the bar.

Now Chelsea's turn to be awarded a free kick in a dangerous position after Drogba is tripped by Ferdinand in full flow, about 30 yards out and central.

But again, the wall does its job and Lampard's long-range effort is blocked.

The crowd roar their approval as Rooney start to warm up on the touchline - can't be long before he is introduced.

Magnificent goal-saving tackle by Ferreira on Scholes in the box, otherwise United would have been level.

United have really come out all guns blazing in this second period and are pinning the visitors right back.

For the third time this evening, huge United claims for a penalty after Terry appears to handle Saha's long-range shot, but for the third time tonight, Mr.Styles says 'no'.

Saha now tries a snap shot from the left-hand edge of the box, but it flies wastefully high over Cechs bar.

Free kick given to Chelsea after a foul by Ronaldo on Makelele, but having been given the free kick, the France international aims a wild kick at the Portugal winger and as a result, all hell breaks out with a melee.

And, as a result, Makelele and Keane, who subsequently became involved with the Frenchman, are booked.

Rooney is about to enter the fray, which should raise the temperature of proceedings.

Free kick to Chelsea on halfway after a late tackle by Fortune on Drogba, who makes the most of the situation by falling to the turf in agony.

First substitution of the game and not surprisingly it is United who make it, taking off Fortune and bringing on Rooney to support Saha up front.

Chelsea look like they are going to protect their lead from now until full time, which could be risky.

Half-chance for United and their skipper Keane after a good lay-off in the area by Rooney, but the Irishman hooks his effort from a tight angle wide of the far post.

Now Chelsea's turn to break up field via Robben, but his left-wing cross is overhit to the back post and United are able to clear their lines.

And now United start a counter themselves with Ronaldo down their right wing, but his low centre to the near post is easily claimed by Cech.

Lampard so nearly makes it 2-0 and game over with a low shot from the edge of the box, but Howard comes to United's rescue with an excellent fingertip save that leads to a corner.

GOAL! Magnificent equalising goal by Giggs, who somehow manages to get on the end of Neville's chipped through-ball to execute a wonderful lob over the giant Cech.

That really was some goal by Giggs, as it takes some skill to be able to chip one of the tallest keepers in world football.

It's looking like extra time, which really should not be too much surprise to anyone.

Amazingly, that was the first goal that Cech had conceeded since Henry's second, controversial, strike at Highbury in December.

Chelsea make their first change of the night, taking off Drogba and bringing on Gudjohnsen.

And almost immediately, Gudjohnsen has a chance to put his side back into the lead, but he cannot get enough contact on Robben's left-wing centre and Howard makes a smart stop down by his near post.

United almost take the lead themselves after a long ball over the top causes confusion in the visitors back four, but when the ball falls to Rooney, he cannot pick out a team-mate in the middle and Cech claims.

This match is really end to end at present, with Chelsea having gone up field and won themselves a corner after a mix-up between Ronaldo and Ferdinand.

But, the left-wing corner taken by Lampard flicks off a United defender and goes out for a right-wing corner.

However, again the corner is poor and United are able to launch a counter-attack via Rooney, only for Duff to cover back and concede a corner, this time for United.

But not for the first time this evening, the delivery is poor and Cech has no problems claiming at his near post.

United have really played much better in this second period and deserve to be level.

Duff has done really well for his side by relieving some pressure by winning a free kick in a dangerous position, level with the box, on the left-hand touchline.

But the free kick is driven straight into the wall and United are able to wack the ball clear.

Robben goes on a mazy dribble, cutting in from the left wing, before shooting from the edge of the box, but for once the Dutchman is off target and Howard has a goal kick.

Chelsea go up field looking to take extra time out of the equation, with Mourinho having come down to the touchline to give some instructions to his side.

And Duff has done very well to win his team a free kick right on the right-hand touchline.

Interestingly, all Chelsea's big guns have gone forward, including defenders Terry and Gallas, which is a dangerous policy with so little time left.

GOAL! An absolutely incredible goal by Duff, who took the free kick that he won himself and curls it straight into the back of the net from about 40 yards out with Howard rooted to his line.

United have four minutes to rescue their proud semi-final record and immediately Giggs has won his side a left-wing corner - It's now or never.

A great goalline clearance by Bridge from Silvestre's header keeps Chelsea in the lead, but that was close.

Now it is Cech who keeps Chelsea ahead by tipping Giggs's angled drive from the left-hand edge of the box over the bar and away for yet another corner.

Another half-chance for United, and Silvestre, but the unmarked defender miscues his volley and it goes out for a goal klck.

Another sensational save by Cech keeps Chelsea ahead, this time from Ronaldo's low shot - that really was a world-class and match-winning save by the giant keeper.

The fourth official has indicated that there will be three minutes of time to be added on at the end of this second period.

Everyone is back for the Blues at present, defending for their lives and holding on for their place in the final.

And that is it, referee Styles has blown his whistle to indicate full time at Old Trafford and Mourinho's Chelsea will be taking on Liverpool in Cardiff next month in the Carling Cup final, while for United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, not only is this his first-ever defeat in a domestic semi-final, but he's still to get one over on Jose Mourinho in his managerial career.
