Liverpool – Manchester United

1. Liverpool hand debuts to new signings Fernando Morientes and Mauricio Pellegrino. Morientes, signed on Thursday, comes in to partner Milan Baros up front, while veteran defender Pellegrino replaces Steve Finnan who succumbed to a hamstring injury. The central defensive partnership of Sami Hyypia and Jamie Carragher is broken up, with the latter switched to right-back.

2. Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs both failed fitness tests on hamstring injuries, so Wes Brown is drafted into the centre of defence, while Sir Alex Ferguson opts for a five-man midfield which includes Cristiano Ronaldo wide and just Louis Saha up front. Ferguson also recalls Roy Carroll ahead of Tim Howard in goal, despite the 'own goal' howler against Tottenham.

   Phil Neville clatters into Risse, he's taken a knock to the ankle but gets up without the aid of the physio

   Heinze is caught late by Carragher when clearing his lines, kicking the Liverpool defender's boot in the blocking attempt

   Another free-kick to United, this time in a dangerous position. It's worked all the way across to Ronaldo and the cheers go up as he is tackled and the momentum is gone

    United enjoy possession, Neville finds space on the right and delivers a superb cross into the heart of the box. Hyypia is there to get a vital flick on the ball just as Saha was preparing to nod home. Great defending - and a fine cross from Phil!

    United growing in confidence now. Rooney finds a bit of space inside the D but drags his shot wide of Dudek's right-hand post

    Now Liverpool break. Luis Garcia bursts from the centre and it's three-on-three. Both Morientes and Baros are screaming for it but Garcia shoots and it's blocked - awful decision

    Hamann is brought down by Heinze over on the right flank. Gerrard whips in the free-kick and it finds Morientes in space - he miss-kicks eight yards out, a real chance gone

    The atmosphere is electric at Anfield. It's end-to-end stuff and so far has the makings of a classic battle

    Liverpool are in the ascendancy once again, but it's hard to say who will draw first blood

    Brown picks out Heinze with a cross-field ball, and the jeers ring out as the Argentine tries to flick it over both his head and Carragher's and gets it all wrong - and out of play

    Completely agaist the run of play United have the lead - and it's a real howler from Dudek. Rooney's shot from 30 yards was hit well but it should have been bread and butter for the goalkeeper

    United in command now and they have a corner. It comes in from the right, Heinze is unmarked and his header lands on the roof of the net - that was a fine chance

    Liverpool look rattled now. They were very much on top and now face the task of finding a way through a United side which has not let in a goal for over ten hours!

    Will Liverpool now step up their interest in Leeds prospect Scott Carson? But having not played a first team game this season, Carson will not be an immediate answer to their goalkeeping ills

    Carragher enters the book for a clumsy tackle on Ronaldo. It's Ronaldo who whips in the free-kick but it's headed clear

    Liverpool have struggled to get out of their own half since going behind, they need to get their composure back

    Back up the other end, Saha gets into the box but is tackled. The loose ball comes to Scholes who sees Keane in space 25 yards out. He picks out the pass and Keane takes one touch and then hits it...

    Keane's dipping effort has Dudek beaten all ends up but its smashed down off the underside of the bar and the power of the shot takes the ball to safety. Fantastic hit by Keane and desperately unlucky

    The backpass comes to Dudek as Rooney closes in, Dudek takes a huge risk by using a bit of trickery to take it around the young forward and there's a worried gasp from the home faithful as it comes off
