Everton – Tottenham Hotspur

1. Afternoon all, welcome to live commentary on Tottenham's trip to Everton, a match that is live on ESPN UK.

2. Everton make three changes from the side that drew at QPR with Nikica Jelavic handed a first start and Seamus Coleman and Leon Osman back. Steven Pienaar and Louis Saha are both ineligible.

3. Gareth Bale, Scott Parker and Jermain Defoe return to Tottenham's line-up.

4. A bit of confusion about Saha, who is in fact on Tottenham's bench. There is an agreement between Redknapp and Moyes, but I'm not sure exactly what it is. Maybe he can come on after a certain time? Odd.

5. Spurs' recent run means Arsenal have closed to within four points of their rivals. A win would provide some welcome breathing space. For Everton, a win would take them from 13th, to 9th.

   A pretty subdued opening, with much of the football being played in the middle of the park.

   Excellent defneding from Distin as Bale is gifted possession, he sends the winger wide and then blocks the cross. Corner.

   Kaboul looks long for Defoe - not an option that will reap rewards I would humbly suggest.

    Great cross from Drenthe, nicely defended by Kaboul, then Coleman makes space for a shot but dribbles it wide.

    Everton on top in the early stages, this time Coleman crosses and Kaboul clears again.

    Bit more from Spurs now with a good spell of possession in the middle of the pitch. Subdued atmosphere in the ground. Like everyone is half asleep.

    David Moyes' father is in the crowd to watch his son's ten year anniversary. Hardly a carnival atmosphere to see it in.

    It seems a little early to say it, but this game needs a goal.

    Jelavic wins a header in the box but Assou-Ekotto tidies up.

    Bale gets down the right and crosses but Distin nods clear.

    Distin nods back to Howard after a long punt bounced over his head.

    At the other end Cahill wins a good flick on but it doesn't fall anywhere near Jelavic.

    Parker tries to spring Defoe through but he was offside.

    A slice of spce for Modric on the edge of the box but he wasn't comfortable striking with his left, tries to come onto his right and the chance is lost.

    Coleman does get a shot off, but a deflection takes the sting out of it and delivers the ball into Friedel's arms.

    Fantastic tackle from Heitinga as Defoe turned past him initially - just as the striker was about to strike on goal he gets a touch to ensure the shot skews wide.

    Drenthe wins a free kick on the touchline.

    Baines turns inside and strikes on goal before Osman tracks Adebayor and wins the ball to prevent a dangerous situation developing.

    A genuine save! Jelavic wins a ball dinked into the area and Fellaini strikes on gaol from a narrow angle, prompting Friedel to stick out a leg and save well.

    A fine, fine finish. A lovely turn from Osman, past Kaboul into the box, he squares it to Jelavic who side-foots on the volley into the corner, via a flick off the post. Quality effort.

    What a way to endear yourself to your new club! A really good finish from Jelavic.

    Another mistake from Spurs as Parker gives the ball away, Osman crosses but can't pick out a blue shirt.

    Jelavic is looking a bit clumsy up front in open play - he's clearly desperate to make an impression. His goal has been at odds with the rest of his game.

    Defoe and Adebayor haven't linked up well yet. Spurs have a free kick now as Cahill clips Parker.

    Bale strikes a right wobbler, that has Howard scrambling across, but the ball whistles past the post.

    Walker crosses from the right but Modric challenges Fellaini in the air and there is only one winner in that duel. Then he tries a snapshot from range that Howard saves.

    Now Sandro upends Cahill and Everton have a free kick 30 yards out and central.

    Jelavic forces a smart save from Friedel, with a curling effort.

    It is still very quiet at Goodison Park. Drenthe falls over the ball and gives away a free kick.

    Parker goes down after a flick from Neville, no free kick given and no complaints from Parker.

    Adebayor feeds Bale who strikes first time but without power and Howard gobbles it up.

    Another example of the lack of relationship between Defoe and Adebayor as the former misplaces a pass to the latter.

    Defoe does win a free kick this time though, from Heitnga. Wide left on the touchline.

    The free kick falls to the back post where Sandro controls well but Heitinga is across swiftly to block.

    A good break from Everton after the corner was cleared to Drenthe, he finds Jelavic and only a diving Walker prevents a corner.

    Adebayor was so keen to barge Cahill out of the way, the Everton player moves out of the way and watches as the striker slides off the field and collides with an advertising board.

    Two poor crosses from Spurs and Everton can bring the ball clear.

    <b>HALF TIME</b> The end of a half that was lit up briefly by Nikica Jelvaic's superbly taken goal. Tottenham need some serious improvement in the second half or they won't get anything from this game.

    Defoe hands off Heitinga before getting a shot off that is blocked behind for a corner. Should have been an Everton free kick.

    Bale's corner is awful though - over everybody and behind for a goal kick.

    Great chance for Everton as Osman runs onto a ball from Coleman and has a clear sight of goal but his shot from 16 yards is right at Friedel when he should have gone across goal.

    Great burst from Baines and a chance to slide Rodwell in but Jelavic had strayed offside and can't latch onto the pass.

    The game is getting stretched now - I can smell another goal on the way.

    Parker wins a free kick when it looked like he'd taken the ball out of play. The delivery is long though and Everton are reprieved.

    Defoe has the ball in the net but he is offside. Bale's chest took the ball forward and the striker was a good two yards off.

    Kaboul meets Assou-Ekotto's header at the back post and Howard gets up to claim.

    So close for Van der Vaart as he takes Modric's pass and fires on goal from the box edge. A deflection takes it up and over and on top of the net.

    Friedel goes up for the corner but it is played short, thrust into the box by Modric where Saha hits the post! Frantic stuff!

Saha's effort had Howard rooted but the ball hit the post and then the keeper before being cleared. Now Howard is booked for time wasting.

    A session of ping pong in the box ends with Howard claiming after Distin's header looked like it might loop over the keeper. And that is it!

    <b>FULL TIME</b> A stoic effort from Everton to hang on to a slender victory in the face of a second half onslaught from Spurs, who will feel they deserved something from the game. Saha went close, Howard saved twice from Defoe and it all means Nikica Jelavic's first goal for the club secures a win on David Moyes' 10-year anniversary.
