Everton – Liverpool

1. Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the 212th Merseyside derby from Goodison Park. It is a huge match for both sides, who have been underperforming of late, to put it mildly.

2. It is no secret that Liverpool are struggling for form and they come into this game in seventh place and having been knocked out of the Champions League.

3. Everton are also at a low ebb. They are in 16th place, three points clear of danger, and this week saw their application for a new stadium turned down. David Moyes is concerned the club are no longer progressing.

4. Liverpool are again missing Fernando Torres so David Ngog leads the line for the Reds. It is a big test for the Frenchman who has looked bright on occasions.

5. So with both Merseyside teams enveloped in a sense of gloom, who's day will be brightened by a derby victory? The teams are in the tunnel, and we are just seconds away from kick-off...

   KICK OFF Everton, led by Jo in a lone striking role, get the game underway.

   Everton win an early free-kick but Diniyar Bilyaletdinov's delivery is headed clear by the Liverpool defence.

   Pepe Reina takes a bit of a risk when confronted with Jo but gets away with it. He has bad memories of this fixture and a certain goal from Andy Johnson of course.

   First blood in the tackling stakes goes to Tim Cahill as he clatters into Javier Mascherano and gets a telling off.

    Dirk Kuyt has the first shot of the game but his effort is blocked by Marouane Fellaini. David Ngog then gets the ball in the box and controls well, but his second touch takes the ball away from him.

    Steven Pienaar, who made his return in the midweek game against Hull, tries to find Jo with a ball over the top but the striker is offside.

    Pienaar centres for Cahill who is in a lot of space 20 yards from goal, but his touch is poor and Liverpool shirts swarm around him.

    Everton look full of invention and endeavour and after Bilyaletdinov only just fails to release Pienaar with a clever through-ball, the Russian then pokes a shot well wide at the far post. Liverpool were stretched there.

    Steven Pienaar has started very well indeed and he will be Everton's key figure today. He doesn't look like a man who has played one game since the end of September.

    Johnny Heitinga appears to catch Gerrard late on and as play continues, the Liverpool captain goes across to have a word with his opponent. There is an edge to this game already.

    GOAL! Liverpool take the lead and it is so, so lucky. Javier Mascherano produces a shot that is going miles wide and Joseph Yobo sticks out a boot, deflecting the ball past Tim Howard. That's an own goal, and so harsh on Everton.

    David Moyes must feel like everything is going against him at the moment. Struggling for form, plans for a new stadium dashed and now luck is turning against Everton too.

    After such a difficult season, and with Moyes questioning his players' desire after defeat to Hull in midweek, it will be interesting to see how Everton respond to that early setback.

    The last time Everton came back from a goal down to win a Merseyside derby was in the first year of the Premier League. Such is the task facing them now.

    Steven Gerrard races onto a pass into the right channel and tests Howard with a rising effort.

    A shocking miss from Bilyaletdinov! Fellaini and then Jo flick on a throw-in and the ball falls to the Russian at the back post. Somehow he drags his shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

    They may be 1-0 up but Liverpool have looked anything but convincing so far. It is Everton who have had all the quality and imagination.

    Liverpool look content to keep possession at the moment, with Javier Mascherano going all the way back to Pepe Reina.

    As Liverpool are wrongly awarded a throw-in the camera pans past a potty-mouthed Everton fan who looks about five. These local derbies do stir up some emotion, don't they?

    Bilyaletdinov attempts an overhead kick that deflects off Jo. Reina can't keep hold of the ball but Glen Johnson reacts quickest to clear with Jo lurking. Excellent work from the England right-back.

    Tony Hibbert fails to cut out a sliderule pass but when Fabio Aurelio whips in a cross he cannot find a Liverpool team-mate.

    Another nice move from Everton results in the ball rolling into the path of Pienaar following a dummy from Bilyaletdinov. However, his shot from 20 yards flies off target.

    Leighton Baines sends in a deep corner which is headed back into the box by Fellaini, but Liverpool head clear.

    Another good chance for the Toffees. Fellaini rises above Glen Johnson to head the ball into the path of Jo but he can only get his toe to it, resulting in an easy save for Reina.

    Again Fellaini flicks the ball on but he cannot find an Everton shirt. The Belgian's height is causing Liverpool all kinds of trouble and Everton should seek to exploit that.

    Everton continue to pile on the pressure as Pienaar's shot is saved by Reina at his near post. Liverpool have looked a touch dodgy despite their lead.

    Their lucky goal aside, Liverpool are yet to really test Howard with over half an hour gone. That will give Moyes some encouragement.

    Jo has the ball in the back of the net! He is, however, rightly given offside when producing a fine finish from a Bilyaletdinov through-ball.

    That will be yet another warning sign for Liverpool as they continue to look vulnerable. They simply don't deserve this advantage.

    Fellaini and Bilyaletdinov show some nice touches when exchanging passes but the Belgian tries to shoot from 25 yards and gets it horribly wrong.

    Alan Wiley gives Javier Mascherano a little talking to after the Argentinian gets a bit lippy. He does have form in this regard of course.

    The rain is now teeming down at Goodison, which could make for an interesting second half if the surface is slick.

    Just five minutes left in the first half for Everton to make their dominance count with a goal. Otherwise we may see a different Liverpool team in the second half. Rafa won't be impressed by what he has seen so far.

    Superb save from Howard! Liverpool burst into life as Glen Johnson delivers a cross from the right and Emiliano Insua arrives with a thumping header. Howard somehow gets an outstretched hand to the ball and saves. What a stop.

    Jo again has the ball in the net! Again he is rightly ruled offside though as he turns in a header from Joseph Yobo. He was standing right in front of Reina and it was the correct decision.

    Liverpool go in search of a second as we enter first-half injury time but Dirk Kuyt cannot get his head to a deep cross.

    HALF TIME Everton are desperately unlucky to be losing 1-0 at the break following Joseph Yobo's own goal. We will be back in 15 mins.

    KICK OFF Liverpool get us back underway at Goodison Park.

    It has been a quiet start by both sides with Jo failing to release Cahill with a through-ball.

    Kuyt tries to play in Ngog with a neat flick but the ball runs away from the striker and Sylvain Distin collects and clears.

    Fellaini rises high to flick on a set-piece but his header only drops to a Liverpool boot as the away side clear.

    Pienaar intercepts a loose pass and drives Everton forward, but when he tries to play in Jo, Reina is off his line quickly to gather the ball.

    Agger looks unimpressed with Cahill after intimating that the spiky midfielder had hold of his shirt. Replays show he was correct and a free-kick was the right decision.

    Reina comes off his line to produce a one-handed punch to clear a cross, but Liverpool cannot clear their lines and Everton win a throw-in deep in enemy territory. Nothing comes of it though.

    Marouane Fellaini does superbly well to win the ball and race forward 30 yards, but with options either side of him he decides to shoot and produces a rubbish effort.

    You wonder how long it will be before Moyes turns to Louis Saha. He has been in prolific form this season and is lurking ominously on the bench.

    The last time Liverpool recorded back-to-back wins was the end of September and they still have some way to go before getting all three points today.

    Reina drops a 25-yard effort from Pienaar and it bounces off his bum, seeming for a second like it will dribble over the line. The Spaniard is relieved to clasp the loose ball in his hands though.

    Lucas is furiously remonstrating with Alan Wiley and replays show that the blood gushing down his face was caused by a leading elbow from the leaping Fellaini. That will have hurt.

    Liverpool win a rare corner but Everton cleat with ease. The Reds really haven't been much of a threat at all in this game. The scoreline is a real injustice.

    Daniel Agger miscues a volleyed clearance from a Hibbert cross and Everton have a corner. They have looked dangerous from set-pieces but Cahill's delivery results in Heitinga firing well over.

    Yobo does well to clear an Aurelio cross with an overhead kick and Everton then concede a corner.

    Steven Gerrard's delivery finds Agger but he sends his header over the bar. On the touchlines, Moyes readies Louis Saha.

    Lucas tries to collect a Gerrard header but Distin does just enough to prevent the Brazilian from bursting into the box and having a shot.

    Here is the change and Saha comes on in place of Jo. How the former Manchester United striker would love to score today.

    Dirk Kuyt does superbly to close down Baines, win possession and cut back for Ngog, but Yobo produces a superb block to deny the young Frenchman.

    Louis Saha attempts an outrageous effort from the tightest of angles that thunders into the side-netting. Tim Cahill wanted a cross.

    Pepe Reina makes two outstanding saves! The 'keeper first dives full-length to keep out a Tim Cahill header then somehow blocks Marouane Fellaini's point-blank effort from the rebound. Wow.

    You get the feeling that that was Everton's chance to get back in the game. It really is quite incredible that they are losing this game 1-0, but time is running out now.

    Liverpool make a change as Yossi Benayoun comes on for David Ngog, with Dirk Kuyt shifting into the centre.

    Yossi Benayoun embarks on a dazzling run that takes him past four Everton defenders and into the box, but he eventually runs the ball out of play.

    Rafa shuffles his pack as Albert Riera replaces Fabio Aurelio.

    Steven Pienaar is harsly penalised for a foul on Glen Johnson and the frustration is clear on Everton faces.

    GOAL! Quite unbelievably, Liverpool take a 2-0 lead. Albert Riera's low effort is palmed into the path of Kuyt who taps home. Yobo miscued a clearance in the build-up.

    Everton respond by bringing on Yakubu for Tim Cahill but it is too late for the Toffees. They will wonder how they lost this game.

    Reina comes and misses a cross but when Bilyaletdinov hooks the ball back into the danger zone, Saha is outmuscled and the chance passes.

    Johnny Heitinga picks up the first booking of the game for a fairly cynical challenge on Lucas. That was borne out of frustration and he will now miss next week's game against Spurs due to suspension.

    The oles ring out around the visiting fans as Liverpool pass the ball around and they will be delighted with this result, if not the performance.

    Lucas Neill replaces Joseph Yobo at the back for Everton.

    Liverpool go in search of a third but Riera's low effort is deflected wide by the legs of Howard.

    Everton have really deserved a goal but Saha skews his effort well off target. After playing so well, this will be a disheartening experience for the home side.

    Liverpool fans taunt their near neighbours with chants of "going down, going down, going down". They are only three points away from relegation.

    FULL TIME Liverpool secure a fortunate 2-0 victory over Everton thanks to an own goal from Joseph Yobo and a second-half tap-in from Dirk Kuyt. The Reds are up to fifth while Everton ponder another disappointing day.
