2. No Michael Owen for Liverpool, perhaps a legacy of his litany of missed chances on Wednesday. Milan Baros starts instead. Les Ferdinand leads the West Ham line with Paolo Di Canio, with Kanoute and Defoe on the bench.

3. Teenager Glen Johnson is thrown in at right-back for the Hammers. Rufus Brevett, the Friday signing from Fulham, starts on the bench.

4. Liverpool get the game underway. Both clubs need a win - West Ham for obvious reasons, Liverpool for the fact that Everton are now six points clear of them.

   Liverpool try to attack through Gerrard. Winterburn comes across to clear. Carragher will launch a throw.

   Baros collects the ball and is stopped by Johnson.

   Henchoz forced to pass back to Dudek. A foul on Riise and he'll take a free-kick. That drifts across the box only for Heskey to fail to connect.

   Terrible defending by West Ham there - Dailly nearly caught napping.

   Diouf attacks, only to be stopped in his tracks.

    Diouf forced all the way back. Liverpool try to attack before Carrick commits a foul.

    Riise will bend in only for Dailly to head out for a corner.

    Riise takes and Baros, totally unmarked, heads home with real power. 1-0 to Liverpool!

    West Ham at sixes and sevens at the back. Not, of course, for the first time this season.

    Baros weaves into the box. He pokes at the ball and Dailly can clear. James scuttles across to claim the ball.

    Riise's corner is palmed out by David James and Steven Gerrard hits a low drive from the edge of the box and unerringly into the net. 2-0! West Ham in tatters.

    David James is forced to rush out after being sold short by his defence.

    Di Canio lost the ball in the box and there looked to be a handball. Nothin given and Liverpool clear. Henchoz, amazingly, owned the stray arm. Totally out of character.

    Long free-kick aimed at Ferdinand. Liverpool clear. Riise gets a chance to launch a long throw.

    West Ham get a chance to keep the ball at the back. They, predictably, lose it.

    Diouf threads the ball to Baros. He turns a defender but drags a shot across goal. West Ham, again, were lacking defensively.

    But now they have a corner. Hyypia heads clear, showing some of the qualities that West Ham could do with in their backline.

    Baros runs hard and nearly collects a Heskey flick. Route one from Liverpool.

    Murphy and Baros have chances to score as West Ham again dither in the box.

    Diouf slides the ball to no-one in particular and Sinclair can clear.

    Smicer gets clear and bends in a cross. Repka clears with no particular conviction at all.

    Les Ferdinand takes a knock. Kanoute warms up on the touchline.

    Hammers attack now and Winterburn wins a throw. Liverpool go clear with Murphy but his ball is to no-one at all.

    Dailly comes across to clear. Winterburn does the same and Liverpool again get a chance to attack. West Ham clear, again without conviction.

    West Ham lose possession - again. Riise launches a long ball. James comes out to claim.

    Free-kick to West Ham. Bowyer drifts it over the net. Di Canio would have seemed the better option.

    Heskey gets a chance to try a shot. West Ham clear when Smicer dribbles through. Di Canio on the charge...corner to West Ham.

    Henchoz clears with his head. Carrick plays into Johnson. Good cross is knocked to Sinclair. Di Canio wins a throw. Better from the Hammers.

    Di Canio is felled but he'll have to settle for a corner. That comes to nothing. West Ham keep up the pressure.

    Murphy shows good touch and threads the ball to Baros, who lurked narrowly offside.

    Long throw back to James who can only spoon the ball into trouble. He's helped out by Repka.

    Murphy out to Riise. Long ball launched for Bowyer but another offside.

    Riise hits it long. James comes out to clear and Baros looked to have taken a knock.

    Cole goes on a trademark run. He's stopped at the edge of the box. Smicer gets the ball but is fouled by Johnson.

    Cole's pass to Di Canio looked to have split the Liverpool defence but there's the offside flag again.

    Smicer on the left hits a low ball. Repka hoofs clear.

    West Ham try to attack but Sinclair is hustled out by Riise. Good defending again.

    Ferdinand won space and played it through to Di Canio. But Dudek is quick to clear.

    Murphy and Gerrard link in midfield. Baros down the channel. Heskey is thwarted by a high foot from Dailly.

    Johnson berates the ref when he thought he'd won a throw. Fire in the belly of the youngster. Meanwhile Baros is stopped by a forceful Dailly tackle.

    Diouf's angled ball finds Heskey offside.

    Sinclair links with Johnson. Good ball and Ferdinand tries some acrobatics. He missed the ball unfortunately.

    Baros' curved ball is cleared. Johnson shows composure when he had time to take the ball down.

    Riise hacks away as Di Canio and Ferdinand tried to gain possession of a bouncing loose ball.

    Long ball to Baros from Gerrard. But hit too hard. Bowyer gets a chance to shoot but his shot is a real waste.

    The half-time whistle rings out closely followed by a chorus of boos. Glenn Roeder has a real job to do in the dressing room. Terrible defending has cost his team. Maybe one of those 'rollickings' he is so loathe to deliver is called for. For Liverpool, it's a case of cruise control.

    West Ham get the second half underway with a real mountain to climb. Paolo Di Canio and company need to get the crampons on the go.

    Ferdinand is clattered. A nudge maybe from Henchoz but no penalty.

    Heskey flick finds Baros lurking offside.

    Cole is penalised for a foul. Riise will try and bend a free-kick in. Repka does well and James claims with some ease.

    Baros holds off two challenges to win a corner. Riise will take...

    Hyypia, of all people, is unmarked. He misses the target but that was a chilling sign that West Ham have failed to learn their lesson.

    Long ball is claimed easily by Dudek. West Ham try and mount an attack. But they're forced to go back to James who can hack into touch.

    Liverpool keep the ball well. West Ham get the ball back and lose it - the tale of the match.

    Kanoute is ready to take his place on the pitch. Les Ferdinand, who's had a frustrating afternoon, slopes off.

    Carragher made a real burst but took it too far and lost possession.

    Diouf's cross is cut out by the impressive Johnson. A ray of light for West Ham.

    Bowyer runs hard to get in a shot. Kanoute gets a a chance to fire over the bar.

    Free-kick to Liverpool. Johnson stopped Riise in his tracks. West Ham spring into action. Cole and Di Canio link. Sinclair nods down and Kanoute fires over. Best move of the match.

    Rufus Brevett takes the stage for the Hammers. Nigel Winterburn is the fall-guy and he's not happy. Neither is Paolo Di Canio after a penalty claim is turned down by the referee.

    Diouf did well, showing real skill but his shot is poor. A curate's egg is the Senegalese striker.

    Murphy shows real skill to set up an attack. Repka stopped the move though.

    Smicer plays it through to Baros. The Czech twists and turns but fires over.

    Brevett tears down the left-wing but his maiden crossed ball for West Ham United is overhit.

    Kanoute stopped by Gerrard. But David James comes out to clear. Smicer gets the ball, plays it to Murphy but Baros is offside, says the linesman.

    Repka, characteristically, grapples Baros and then pleads innocence.

    Corner from Riise. Hyypia escapes the Kanoute, heads back across goal and Heskey gets just in front of James to knock in. James was fallible but it's now 3-0 to Liverpool.

    West Ham, who'd improved in this half, have, not for the first time, made a defensive error to throw away the game.

    Hyypia gets another free-header. He's unmarked - again. He misses the target. Terrible, terrible marking from the Hammers.

    West Ham try to mount an attack. It's all in vain but it beats defending. Kanoute just missed out on a nice ball from Johnson, again impressive.

    Michael Owen comes on for Milan Baros, who's had a fine afternoon. Owen must fancy knocking one in - to cure the ills of Wednesday's misfirings.

    Di Canio gets to a ball which drifted through from Kanoute. He cuts inside only for Dudek to save. Good stuff from the Pole.

    Another Liverpool corner. This time it's cleared. Though Liverpool get another chance before Di Canio can clear.

    Henchoz comes across to stop a Hammers attack. An offside means his team can launch a long ball - in the usual fashion.

    They choose to play it short and Murphy's ball is poor. But West Ham's attack is unconvincing and Liverpool have it back quickly.

    Bruno Cheyrou, yet to convince in English football, replaces Smicer.

    Defoe looked lively when a threaded ball went through the Liverpool defence. But, guess what, he's offside.

    Di Canio wins a corner but wanted a free-kick. He takes it too quickly. Liverpool clear.

    Johnson does well to hold off Michael Owen.

    A welcome return to the first team for Didi Hamann. He comes on for Murphy, whose done a great job in the centre of the park.

    Good cross from Johnson. He finds the head of Carrick who knocks over the bar. Better but still nowhere near good enough.

    Long ball to the front finds only Dudek. Gerrard sprays a fine pass out wide. Diouf collects and cuts in. He hits the side-netting.

    Hyypia hoofs clear after the ball squirms through to him. Di Canio could have profitted.

    The Finn goes down injured. He clashes with Kanoute and there's blood gushing. He looks a little angry at Kanoute, who was blameless of any foul.

    Hyypia takes to the touchline and continues to berate the fourth official over the 'elbow'.

    Diouf does well, cutting inside to find Michael Owen. The return ball never arrives though.

    Liverpool fans cheer a series of passes from their team. Gerrard sets off into the box with intent but fails to fully control the ball.

    The game drifting to conclusion. West Ham are broken by their defensive frailties. Liverpool gaining much-needed confidence with this win.

    Owen gets a chance to shoot. He misses. Not quite got his shooting boots back on yet.

    A chorus of boos, a regular sound around this part of London, rings out. The Hammers have been beaten easily and were the architects of their own downfall. Liverpool strolled to a comfortable win.
