2. With Smirtin unable to play against the side that are paying his wages Portsmouth start with Yakubu and Mornar up front with Berkovic sitting just in front of a midfield three. With Leeds winning yesterday there is more pressure on the home side to collect points

3. Terry returns to the Chelsea defence for the game at Fratton Park and Parker is also back in the starting line up. Sullivan continues to deputise for the injured Cudicini and today's front two are Mutu and Gudjohnsen. Chelsea will be looking to keep pressure up on the top two and keep alive their slim title hopes. Two teams desperate for points for different reasons, a full house and, no doubt, some 'new offside rule controversy' means a cracking game is in prospect

   Massive jeers mark out that Bridge is on the ball

   Parker has the ball in the net after a shot from distance but the referee had blown up for a foul on Faye long before the effort

   Mornar shows Pompey's spirit by chasing down Melchiot deep in his own half

   Gronkjaer shows fine skill as he back heels a ball out wide on the left to the overlapping Bridge, wrong footing the entire Pompey defence. Great ball in from the full back flashes across the six yard box begging for a touch but it is put out safely for a corner

   Corner comes to nothing as the crowds venom continues to be poored on former Southampton man Bridge

    A throw in to Gronkjaer sees the ball bounce up and Primus pulled up for a high, dangerous foul on the Chelsea man on the left, level with the six yard box

    Surging run across the centre of the park by Gronkjaer is ended by Berger who cleverly shepherds him out for a Pompey throw on the half way line

    Berkovic rides several tackles just inside the Chelsea half. Settling on the ball he plays a beautiful weighted pass behind the Chelsea back line. Sullivan is lively enough to get to it just ahead of the oncoming Yakubu

    Gronkjaer, putting himself around in the early stages, finds space on the left and a cross-come-shot runs narrowly wide of Hislop's left hand upright

    A firey opening is peppered with fouls - Lampard the latest to be given a talking to by referee Graham Poll

    In a congested midfield, Chelsea are struggling to put together and decent passing moves

    Mornar is pulled up, correctly, for offside for the third time already

    Stefanovic lobs an long ball forward for Mornar to chase down the left forcing Melchiot to come across to hoof the ball away

    Quick sideways free kick from Mutu whilst Pompey are still organising gives Gronkjaer a shooting opportunity. From all of 30 yards a powerful effort is not too far away but Hislop looked to have his top right corner covered

    Tempers are starting to flare due to the frenetic pace and persistent fouls. Mutu kicks out at Qushie after a foul but no card is shown

    Parker , bearing down on Pompey's box lays the ball left to Mutu who is in acres of space inside the home side's penalty area. Lots of Blue shirts are back but to little effect as Mutu gives it back to Parker who has the simple task of finding the net from directly in front of goal, 8 yards out. No mistake is made and Parker opens his Chelsea account. 1-0

    After a high octane start the goal seems to have knocked some of the stuffing out of the home side

    Makelele intercepts a cross and releases Gronkjaer who makes up quick ground going forward before a wayward pass

    Dangerous inswinging cross from Parker sees De Zuuw take no chances and head the ball out for a corner, almost stealing the ball from his keeper's hands

    Mutu wastes the dead ball by sending it too high and long for the waiting Terry

    Great football from Chelsea. Ball in from the right by Parker finds Mutu, quick back heel to Lampard who plays a one-two with Gudjohnsen and looks to be in on goal until an outstretched Pompey leg nicks the ball from his feet

    Rare chance for Portsmouth as a ball breaks to Berger in front of goal around 25 yards out. Parker is quick enough to close him down an block

    Mix up at the back for Chelsea. Back pass from Terry to Sullivan who fires the clearance straigh at his team mate. Ball deflects to the path of Yakubu is space running into the box. The striker fires a powerful straight shot that keeps rising and goes over. Should have been one-one but isn't

    Quashie and Terry get caught up in a wrestling match mid -way into the Chelsea half. Award goes in favour of the home side but the free kick comes to nothing

    Bridge makes a typically energetic overlapp down the left and is unlucky that his cross is blocked

    The two chances for Pompey have lifted both the crowd and the players after their performance had threatened to loose momentum

    Quashie takes a snap shot from just outside the box on the left. Worth a pop but in the end the effort flashes across the box to safety from a Chelsea point of view

    Berger twists and turns his way around the middle of the pitch, looking for an opening. Turns back on himself and swings his left foot to fire a dipping, curving effort goalwards. Sullivan is beaten but the post denies the Czech international a sensational equaliser

    A good 15 minute spell for Portsmouth who are, for the moment, camped in the Chelsea half

    Quashie swings in a cross with no particular target. Half hearted appeals for a penalty from the crowd as Mornar backs in to Terry but nothing is, rightly, given

    Long ball forward for Mutu to chase. pasanen, though, is calm under the pressure and heads back to his keeper

    Stefanovic is given room on the left to place his cross. Mornar is the target but Terry is with him every inch of the way and does enough to deny him a decent chance

    Gronkjaer, hugging the left touchline, recieves the ball, cuts inside and tries to curl a right footed shot into the top right hand corner of the net. Not too far away but there were a number of team mates who will be annoyed with his greed

    Chelsea have to play a lot of quick, first touch passes under pressure from the Pompey midfield. They do, and find a bit of space for Makelele to play a ball forward for Melchiot to chase. But it is too heavy and goes for a corner

    Berkovic does well to retain pssession and play a delightful pass out to Mornar who surges forward to win a corner

    Quick throw from the Scot sets up a Chelsea counter attack and Lampard, arriving late from deep will be disappointed not to have done better with a shot from outside the area

    Portsmouth, with Berkovic as the driving force, edge up the pitch until the ball comes to Faye, with Chelsea seemingly unwilling to close him down. The crowd want him to shoot, so he does and the ball sails a long, long way over

    Yakubu wriggles free of his markers inside the Chelsea half to get off a powerful, waist level shot that calls on Sullivan to prove his worth, diving at full stretch to repel to strike

    Half time whistle is sounded and a thoroughly compelling half comes to a close. The crowd have been treated to plenty of chances for both sides, two massively committed teams playing as if it is a cup tie and some nice touches of skill. Chelsea had the upper hand near the start but Pompey have fought their way back into it and deserve to have gone in at least level.

    Mistake by Stefanovic gifts the ball to Chelsea who start playing the ball around in the Pompey half. A clumsy challenge by Mornar gives Mutu a free kick just wide of the left corner of the box. Played low and hard but Pompey clear

    From the clearance Portsmouth break and a run down the left by Yakubu is halted but Parker who kicks him up in the air to become the first player in the referee's book

    A flowing Chelsea move sees Lampard getting forward and exchanging passes with Gujohnsen on the edge of the box. A neat back hell from the striker into Lampard's path allows him to shoot low and hard but at the feet of Hislop who prevents a goal by getting down well

    Pompey try to play themselves out of trouble but Lampard is strong and robs Faye of the ball

    Lampard forward to Gronkjaer who gets a cross out from under his feet in the Portsmouth box that just fails to reach its target

    A delightful chipped ball over the top from Quashie looks to have put Berger away. He needed a good first touch to bring the ball down but he is unable to make any contact

    Berger has twisted his ankle in to process and is now off the pitch to receive treatment

    Portsmouth keep possession and probe the Chelsea back line looking for an opening. Berkovic plays a clever, disguised back heel into the box down the left anticipating a run that Stefanovic didn't make

    A through ball for Yakubu to chase sets up a battle of the big men as a covering Terry has to use all his strength to hold off the striker. Crowd appeal for a penalty but in fact Terry plays the situation perfectly to guide the ball back to Sullivan. Great defending

    Mornar wins a header and puts it across the box to Yakubu who lays it back outside the box to LuaLua. On the half volley he strikes it cleanly enough but directs it just high and wide

    Portsmouth are certainly having their chances as the game becomes more stretched but they need to start making them count if they are to get anything from this match

    A wonder ball from Lampard sends Hasselbaink free over the top. As Hislop comes out, the striker lifts the ball over his head only for it to come back off the crossbar. Crespo, however, as all strikers should, is following in and chests the ball over the line. 2-0 Chelsea

    Stefanovic is shown yellow after a bad foul on Hasselbaink. The Dutchman gets up to take the resulting free kick. While Pompey are still preparing he tries a quick low shot but it trickles through without troubling Hislop

    Great ball in from the left by Yakubu. the outswinging cross is heading towards Mornar on the penalty spot but Terry, again, gets in front to avert the danger

    Straight away Chelsea break into the space Pompey are now leaving at the back. Hasselbaink is fresh enough to out pace Pasanen but the angle is too narrow and he hits the side netting with his shot

    Substitution for Portsmouth sees Berkovic, who has run himself ragged, make way for Matthew Taylor

    Chelsea retain possession as they try to force the tired home side to chase the ball

    Taylor gets his first real touch of the ball and tries to play in Mornar but it is too easy for Bridge who continues to get vocal abuse from the crowd

    Portsmouth are throwing men forward in an effort to get something late on but the Chelsea back line are able to repel them

    Portsmouth create something through LuaLua, Yakubu - who plays a wonderfully weighted ball for Mornar to chase. Unselfishly he centres when a shot was on but Terry, sliding back to cover, stops it getting to a Blue shirt

    A long, aimless ball forward is of no use to Portsmouth and it is easily dealt with. Chelsea break through the middle as Hasselbaink nearly plays in an overlapping Melchiot

    Whistle goes and Chelsea have won the match 2-0. the result is harsh on Portsmouth who contributed to an excellent contest. Pompey fans will be wondering how they failed to take at least a point with the chances they had but, despite being on top for large periods, the home side did not make the most of their superiority and the impressive Chelsea defence stood up to them well. Chelsea were more clinical and move to within 6 points of leaders Arsenal on a night when second placed Manchester Unit
