2. Damien Duff is handed his first start of the season. Duff is one of three changes to the side held to a goalless draw by Tottenham, with William Gallas in at left-back due to both Wayne Bridge and Celestine Babayaro being out injured, while Alexei Smertin is preferred ahead of the benched Joe Cole

3. Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren is forced to hand Doriva his first full outing with Gaizka Mendieta out with a calf injury and Szilard Nemeth sent home with a stomach upset. McClaren also has problems at centre-back with Ugo Ehiogu again out, while Chris Riggott was not risked with a thigh strain, meaning Colin Cooper is recalled as partner to skipper Gareth Southgate.

   Parlour and Hasselbaink link up well, but Gallas does well at left back to cut out the pass to Doriva

   Parnaby delivers into the box, forcing Carvalho to put it it behind for a corner

   Zenden goes over to the left to swing one into the box - but only finds the gloves of Cech

    Chelsea enjoying some good possession, looking to prise open the Boro defence

    Parnaby gives it away and Drobga receives the ball on the left. His cross only finds the head of a defender, but ends up at the feet of Smertin at the far post, and his shot it straight at Schwarzer who saves down low

    Now Doriva gives it away on the edge of the box, allowing the shot from Gudjohnsen which again is straight at the goalkeeper

    Middlesbrough are looking a little edgy at the moment, struggling to keep the ball with wayward passing

    Now Drogba comes forward on the right and pulls it back to Lampard on the edge of the box, who can only shoot weakly into the grasp of Schwarzer

    Smertin robs Doriva, comes forward and slips in Drogba - who wins a corner off Southgate

    The corner comes in, it's chaotic in the box and Queudrue has to head behind

    It's floated in again and Terry finds space for the shot - good block from Southgate and Boro clear

    A free-kick is given against Terry for a high foot on Hasselbaink, who is less than happen with the challenge

    Hasselbaink needs treatment off the pitch following the Terry tackle

    Gudjohnsen picks out Drogba inside the box on the left - he looked offside - it's a good first touch and creates the space for the shot, but slashes at the ball and sends it well wide. £24million?

    Duff fires wide from just outside the box, it was a weak effort after being picked out by Drogba

    Hasselbaink has a three to four inch gash on his head - Boro remain with ten men while they decide if the Dutchman can come back on

    Duff is needlessly offside after being picked out by Lampard - he was looking right along the line

    Boro are being very defensive at the moment, understandable while they play with ten as their striker is patched up

    Smertin unleashes a snap shot from 25 yards, it forces Schwarzer to make a smart save but he cannot keep hold - Cooper it there to mop up the loose ball

    Hasselbaink finally returns after almost ten minutes off the park

    The game died somewhat while Hasselbaink, a former Chelsea favourite of course, was off the field - let battle commence once more

    Duff crosses from the left, it's a good ball towards Drogba only for Queudrue to make his presence felt and the Ivory Coast striker fails to connect

    Viduka tries to hold the ball up in the box, Carvalho does well to pressurise and force the error

    Ferreira fells Zenden just outside the box on the left, presenting a good chance for Boro

    Hasselbaink and Zenden stand over it, the ball's tapped to Hasselbaink to hit - but he's closed down before he can shoot, a waste

    Chelsea break and Lampard picks out a fine ball to send Drogba through on goal - Schwarzer comes out of his area and heads clear

    Smertin clatters into Boateng who's floored by the challenge, no card

    Drogba again finds himself in the clear and gets into the area, Schwarzer gets down brilliantly to rob the striker and then put the ball out

    Zenden is caught from behind by Carvalho, 25 yards from goal. That shoud be a booking, but referee Halsey lets him off

    It's positioned on the left, again Zenden and Hasselabink stand over it. It's a carbon copy of the previous free-kick, this time Hasselbaink hits a blue shirt

    Chelsea have a free-kick of their own, around 35 yards out. Lampard smashes one, it's blocked by Queudrue but falls to Drogba who must score...

    ...Drogba hits a thunderous effort, which crashes back out off the underside of the bar and Boro manage to clear. He should have scored

    Gallas and Parlour clash when going for a 50-50 ball. The Boro man comes out the worst and needs treatment

    Chelsea have had a plethora of opportunities in this first half, while Boro have barely been in the Blues' box. Will they be made to pay for failing to turn that domination into goals?

    Parlour is taken off on a stretcher, it doesn't look good for the former Arsenal man - but no change yet

    Duff whips a cross in from the left, Drogba leans on Queudrue and is penalised

    It's been a strange first 45 minutes. Chelsea should have the lead but at the same time have not been totally dominant. We surely must see more from Boro after the break.

    It's a superbly worked goal by Chelsea, straight from the training ground. Lampard's drilled low ball was met by Drogba on the penalty spot, who sidefooted the ball past goal with power. Schwarzer, diving to his left, got a hand to the ball but couldn't keep it out

    With Boro now playing with only one striker on the pitch it looks a real struggle to get anything from this game against the Premiership's best defence

     It was far from a vintage Premiership encounter, but Chelsea again did what was required and probably deserve the 1-0 victory which takes them, for now, to the top of the table
