Paul Scholes marks his 400th appearance for Manchester United. He is no doubt hoping to spoil City manager Kevin Keegan's 53rd birthday celebrations. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson makes four changes to the side that lost to Middlesbrough in midweek. Roy Keane, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Cristiano Ronaldo all return

City also lost during the week, to Liverpool, and Keegan also rings the changes. He drafts in goalkeeper Arni Arason, Joey Barton and Antoine Sibierski while Republic of Ireland Under-21 striker Stephen Elliott was on the bench

City only have Fowler up front, and they are finding it hard to work it forward with the former Liverpool man ploughing a lone furrow

Ronaldo is sent crashing by Tarnat in centre-field, and referee Winter has words, but there's no card this time

Fortune crosses into the box, it's easy for Distin to head clear

Fowler plays it out right for Wright-Phillips - it's poor and out for a throw

Tarnat floats a cross in from the right, and it's just ahead of the run from Sibierski so Howard can collect

Van Nistelrooy flicks Gary Neville's pass across the face of goal. The loose ball is picked up by Giggs, and he finds to head of Keane - who puts it over the bar

Fowler is so isolated up front. City cannot really win any respite, as when the ball's cleared it's just coming straight back

Phil Neville is penalised for a foul on Barton, free-kick to City. Tarnat swings it in with his left, goal-kick

Ronaldo tried to feed one to Van Nistelrooy but Van Buyten, from a family of famous Belgian wrestlers, intercepts

Scholes win a free-kick 25 yards out, it looks a home decision. City are far from happy with that

Ronaldo and Giggs stand over the ball. Ronaldo whips it goalwards, Arason makes the dive but it goes the wrong side of the post - as far as the home side are concerned

Giggs looks for Van Nistelrooy, Van Buyten is again there to bring an end to the move

Giggs shows a good turn of pace to get past Dunne and moves in on goal, again it's Van Buyten who makes the challenge

United win a corner with Wright-Phillips heading behind. Fortune takes, Scholes wins the header, Van Nistelrooy can't get a touch, Ronaldo can and it's another corner

Ronaldo takes this time, Barton and Sibierski collide but the former gets it clear

Keane nudges Distin as he goes up for a header, free-kick

United have been very much on top, but have rarely threatened Arason in the City goal

Dunne puts it behind for a corner. It's Fortune who takes, Sibierski is there to clear

Ronaldo does his stepover routine to try and get past Dunne, Distin comes back to cover and give away a corner

Ronaldo takes, it's awful and City get the chance to regroup

Tarnat plays a good volleyed pass towards Wright-Phillips, he puts it past Fortune but Silvestre comes across to cover

Van Nistelrooy releases Giggs on the left, he rolls it along and Scholes comes in from six yards...

Scholes got in behind Reyna, who should have been more watchful, leaving Arason with no chance. United, rightly, take the lead courtesy of poor City defending

Van Nistelrooy is played through on goal by a fine flick from Phil Neville. Dunne gets back to make a vital challenge and thwart the Dutch striker

Fortune and Sibierski have words with each other, so referee Winter joins them to calm it down

Free-kick to City on the right. Tarnat takes, but only finds the gloves of Howard

Gary Neville bursts into the box - he wants a penalty for a foul by Tarnat. It's not given and it all kicks off. Gary Neville has headbutted McManaman - he has to go

Now it's all handbags, players and jumping in all over the place - Silvestre holds his face as if he's been struck

Referee Winter goes into his pocket and shows the yellow card - and then another he's off. A yellow for the dive in the box and then another for his reaction. It should have been a straight red

Now Winter goes over to his linesman and seeks his opinion. It's Barton who's fingered, but it's just the one yellow for the City midfielder

United down to ten, City back in with a chance. No doubt we haven't seen the end of the fiery nature of this game now

Tarnat stayed on, to some surprise. It looked like he was very much involved in the fracas

City win a free-kick on the left, Tarnat takes, Howard claims

The home crowd are incensed. They don't have the benefit of the pictures we do, it was a clear sending-off - although it should have been straight red

Fowler is released in on goal, it's a great chance, but Howard gets down to deflect it behind for a corner

Tarnat takes it, to Reyna, he volleys goalwards and again Howard does brilliantly to keep it out. Pressure from City at last

Giggs gets away from Dunne, moves into the penalty area and checks back onto his left. It's played into Ronaldo who scores

No, it's disallowed. The Portuguese was clearly offside when Giggs played the ball

And there goes the half-time whistle

After a quiet start to the game, it all went off in the final ten minutes. After United scored, Gary Neville has given the visitors a lifeline

It now transpires that Gary Neville was given a yellow card for the dive AND a straight red for the headbutt on McManaman - and that will be a three-game ban for the England defender

City are going to have to get more bodies up front, Fowler will need a strike partner, to mak the extra man count

Ronaldo goes on the burst, but his cross is cleared by Van Buyten

Sibierski produces a great ball down the line to Wright-Phillips on the right, there's not many in the middle and the cross headed away but only to Sibierski, who fires wide from 20 yards

Keane plays a fine ball over the top for Ronaldo, he's chased by McManaman and concedes the corner

Giggs steps up to take. Barton heads clear, it comes back in to Van Nistelrooy but he's flagged offside

City are going to have to get Macken or Elliott on to provide support for Fowler

Sibierski plays in Wright-Phillips on the overlap, he's in space and has a chance here - only for Howard to make a good save and give away a corner

Tarnat takes but poor control by Reyna lets him down and United can break with Ronaldo

It's clever work from McManaman, he does a backheel to find Wright-Phillips who looks to go past Scholes but, in the box, the United man does well

A free-kick to City half-way inside the United half. Tarnat looks up as the big boys move forward, it goes short to Reyna - he chips into the box and Sibierski's header is cleared by O'Shea

Reyna is penalised for handball. Barton argues with referee Winter about the decision and needs to be careful - he's on a yellow

Van Nistelrooy finds Neville on the right, he finds Ronaldo who in turn finds Keane - he wins the corner off Distin

Giggs takes it, Van Buyten is there to clear and City can come forward

Barton feeds Dunne on the right. He looks up and crosses into the danger area. Both Fowler and Siberski are there, but it's Barton with the ghosting run who connects...

This is better from City now, they should be back on level terms

Scholes plays a neat ball over the top for Van Nistelrooy, he goes down under the challenge from Distin and Van Buyten - Ruud wants a penalty but it never was

McManaman finds himself in on goal, thanks to Fowler, and it's a great chance to level - but his side-footed effort is weak and easy for Howard in the United goal

Tarnat blasts one from 30-yards - it deflects wide off a team-mate

Keane goes in hard on Barton, no more than a free-kick

Ronaldo does his trademark stepover but, as is so often the case, there's no end product

Keane claims a corner - but it was deflected off Giggs and will be a goal-kick

Barton unleashes an effort from 25-yards, but it's always rising and is well over the bar

Still no action from the bench by Kevin Keegan - 10 minutes left to save the tie

A poor header from McManaman gives possession away to Giggs, he finds Van Nistelrooy on the right, the low cross wins a corner off Distin

The unmarked O'Shea flicks on the corner and it goes back out wide. Ronaldo delivers it to the back stick and Van Nistelrooy is there to tap home

United double there advantage. It was a great cross from Ronaldo and Ruud had the simple task to score from just a couple of yards

Now it is an uphill task for City, even if United do have ten men

Fortune finds a great cross to pick out Giggs, he unleashes the shot - it's a fantastic save by Arason, superb, but the loose ball comes out to Ronaldo...

Arason's save was world class, but his was very unfortunate that the loose ball fell to a red shirt - and now it's surely game over

Still no sign of any substitutions from City. It shows a real lack of adventure considering they were trailing to a side with ten men

Dunne has it on the right, he plays it into the box, flicked on by Distin, and it's met by Tarnat...

Tarnat's shot was unstoppable and City are back in it. Surely they cannot repeat the heroics of White Hart Lane?

It's a goal bonanza at Old Trafford, just when City seemed to have hope they went to sleep at the set-piece and it's game over again - Ruud tapping in from a couple of yards

Treatment for Van Nistelrooy, he picked up a knock going for a header with Distin

Keane gets a fantastic challenge in on McManaman and starts the break. It eventually comes for Ronaldo - but his shot is so poor it goes out for a throw-in!

It's comfortable for United now, City have lost their spark and if anything United may grab a fifth

Dunnes crosses in from the left and it comes to Barton - he's tripped by Keane and it's a free-kick 25-yards out

Howard stands on his post lining things up. But Fowler takes it early...

It's a superb, left-footed free-kick from Fowler. Howard had no chance, and City have a bit of cheer

Dunne again crosses from the left. Sibierski is there only seven yards out - and heads wide. So, so close to a third City goal

Now Fowler blasts over the bar when sent in by Distin's flick-on. It should be 4-4

A change for United as Nicky Butt comes on for Ryan Giggs - Sir Alex is protecting the lead

Again Siberski meets the cross and again he heads wide - another chance wasted

Two minutes to be added on for stoppages

A second change for United, Phil Neville is replaced by Wes Brown

It's game over now, City have no chance of pulling it back

It was a rip-roaring final 20 minutes in which we saw five goals, and should have seen more. United deserve to go through - simply because of City's lack of adventure
