Liverpool – Everton

1. The teams are in and Liverpool's new signing Maxi Rodriguez will get his first taste of a Merseyside derby.

2. Liverpool: Reina, Carragher, Kyrgiakos, Agger, Insua, Mascherano, Lucas, Kuyt, Gerrard, Maxi, Ngog. Subs: Cavalieri, Aquilani, Riera, Aurelio, Babel, Degen, Skrtel.

3. For Everton Sylvain Distin returns at the expense of Philippe Senderos. Everton: Howard, Neville, Distin, Heitinga, Baines, Fellaini, Donovan, Osman, Cahill, Pienaar, Saha. Subs: Nash, Bilyaletdinov, Arteta, Yakubu, Senderos, Anichebe, Coleman.

4. The teams are in the tunnel... kick-off is not far away.

   Liverpool kick-off at Anfield, wearing all red. Everton are in their familiar blue and white.

   Donovan wins an early corner. Baines delivers and Carragher heads clear at the near post... for anohtre corner.

7. 2'

   Osman gets a flick on. Reina is challeneged by Cahill as he tries to punch clear and the ref awards a soft freekick.

8. 3'

   Neville welcomes Gerrard to the derby with a scything tackle. From the resulting freekick, Gerrard forces Howard into a save at his near post.

9. 4'

   Maxi gets his first significant touch of the game; he dribbles the ball out of defence and is fouled by Fellaini in midfield.

10. 5'

    It is a good atmosphere in Anfield.. and some nice tackles too.

11. 6'

    Liverpool probe in midfield but the Everton defence is strong. No way through for the Reds. Everton look set up to play on the counter-attack.

    Reina and Howard play long-ball tennis as the game gets a bit scrappy.

13. 9'

    Distin is nearly caught dwelling on the ball in defence. Fellaini is caught late by Mascherano and the Argentinian gets a telling off form the ref.

    Plenty of action, but not much football so far.

    Osman whips in a cross from the left. Fellaini climbs all over Kyrgiakos and the ref gives a freekick in Liverpool's favour.

    Ngog takes on Baines, but can't beat him. The cross eventually comes in and drops to Agger, who lashes a half-volley over the bar.

17. 13'

    Kuyt turns his man and flicks the ball out left with the outside of his boot. Great play from Kuyt but a poor cross from Carragher.

18. 14'

    Kuyt breaks for Liverpool and plays a through-ball for Ngog. The striker takes a poor first touch and Heitinga recovers to poke the ball back to his goalkeeper.

    Distin concedes a corner.

    Liverpool are looking to turn up the heat but still haven't really threatened the Everton goal with a real chance.

    It's a bit long-ball from Everton. Saha attempts to create something on the right flank but he runs out of ideas and is tackled by two Liverpool players. He had no support.

    Donavan nutmegs Carragher and Kuyt comes across to make an important foul on the American. Yellow card for Kuyt, freekick in dangerous territory for Everton.

    Baines whips his shot over the wall but Reina is equal to the shot and palms the ball over the bar.

    Baines lofts the ball inot the box, Reina flaps at the ball. Saha is shoved in the back by Mascherano as he waits for the ball to drop, but the ref waves play on.

    Ngog is down injured after kicking the sole of Baines' boot.

    Pienaar brings down Kuyt. As the Dutchman falls he takes a kick in the face from Fellaini, who is trying to clear the ball. Kuyt is furious.

    Heitinga slides a cheeky freekick into Saha, who lets the ball slide under his foot on the edge of the box. The striker should really have controlled that pass.

    It's all getting a bit fiesty. Boots flying everywhere.

    Gerrard's shot is deflected behind for a corner.

    Gerrard takes it himself, but it is poor. Osman races out of the area to clear the ball before it drops to Mascherano.

    Pienaar makes a shuddering challenge on Mascherano, catching him on the shin as he looks to clear the ball. A yellow card for Pienaar... lucky it wasn't red.

    Carragher dishes out some retribution on Pienaar in the very next tackle and gets booked too.

    Gerrard slips a pass through to Ngog, who shoots low and wide from the edge of the box. He really should have hit the target.

    Osman with a great through-pass for Saha, who races after the ball but is beaten to it by Reina.

    Fellaini goes in two-footed on Kyrgiakos. Both players are down injured.. I think Fellaini is hoping to avoid a red card...

    ...The ref shows the red to Kyrgiakos! The replay shows he also went in two-footed. You can't argue with the red.

    ...Fellaini looks like he has got away with his two-footed stamp on Kyrgiakos. He is staying on the pitch.

    So Liverpool down to ten-men at Anfield. Should be interesting now.

    It looks like I did Fellaini a disservice, as he is still getting treatment on his injured ankle. Arteta might be coming on.

    Great defence-splitting pass from Osman gives Saha a chance to run at goal... but the flag is up for offside.

    Fellaini is still trying to get back on but it doesn't look good.

    Fellainihobbles off down the tunnel and Arteta comes on. A good creative sub against the ten men of Liverpool.

    Every 50 - 50 challenge leaves you wincing at the moment. There might be more than one red card today.

    The news from the Liverpool dressing room is that Kyrgiakos needs stitches in his wound after his clash with Fellaini.

    Kuyt's cross is blocked by Heitinga, but since the red card Everton have had 83% possession.

    Cahill holds back Gerrard, who goes down to win a freekick in a very good area....

    ...Gerrard and Agger stand over the freekick...

    ...Gerrard hits the freekick over the wall, beats Howard, but strikes the bar with his shot. So close!

    Osman brings the ball forward all the way from his own half, but runs out of ideas and Mascherano makes a good, and clean, tackle.

    Donovan clips the ball to the back post. Mascherano's attempted clearence drops to Cahill, who somehow heads over from ten yards out. How did he miss?

    Everton repeatedly snub the chance to put the ball in the box as half-time approaches and the whistle blows before they can construct an attack.

    Well that was a very eventful half, but it remains 0-0 and that is probably a fair reflection of the first 45 minutes.

    The teams are out for the second-half. Everton kicking from left to right. No changes for either side.

    A Heitinga hoof gets the half underway. Cahill wins his flick on but the header is too short to find Saha.

    Ngog plays in Kuyt on the right. The Dutch striker's shot is deflected behind for a corner.

    Everton break. Cahill brings the ball down with a nice piece of skill, beats Carragher and fires a shot straight at Reina.

    Everton play some great football on the edge of the box but seem reluctant to shoot or cross the ball. Peinaar eventually tries his luck but Mascherano closes him down.

    Maxi intercepts on the edge of his own box. The midfielder doesn't panic, takes his time, and plays a great pass up the flank to Ngog. Nice composed play there from Liverpool's new signing.

    Ngog wins a cheap freekick from Arteta after some good hold-up play. Gerrard delivers the resulting freekick straight into the arms of Howard.

    Mascherano punts the ball up to Ngog. The pass is too hard and skips off the turf to Howard.

    Maxi hits a pass into the channel for Ngog to chase (that seems to be Liverpool's tactics now). The Frenchman gets there and his shot is deflected behind for a corner, which is well defended by Everton.

    Heitinga gives away another corner.

    Kuyt jostles Howard as Gerrard waits to take the corner. As the ball is whipped in it is Kuyt who gets his head to the ball as the goalkeeper flaps and it is 1-0 to Liverpool. GOAL!!!

    Heitinga, obviously frustrated at Everton going behind, gets booked for a foul on Maxi.

    The ten-men of Liverpool have the lead and another freekick in a dangerous position. This time Howard collects the ball.

    Liverpool can sit back and hit Everton on the break now. Which suits them fine.

    Donovan gets to the byline and delivers a good cross, that results in a corner.

    Arteta's corner is easily headed clear by Agger.

    There is movement on the Liverpool bench. Babel looks like he might be coming on very soon.

    Kuyt teases Pienaar into making a tackle and wins a corner for Liverpool. This time Gerrard's cross is too high for everybody.

    Liverpool make a change. Ngog goes off and Babel comes on to lead the line. His pace could cause problems on the break.

    Everton are looking worryingly toothless at the moment. The Liverpool defence are coping easily with everything thrown at them.

    The Toffees have an extra man but they are still resorting to Heitinga hitting long-balls up to Cahill.

    David Moyes could be preparing to send Yakubu on to shake things up. The striker is warming up.

    A very scrappy game at the moment. No real action to report.

    Lucas breaks up an Everton attack and then keeps possession as he brings his team-mates into play.

    Donovan wins a freekick following a one-two with Peinaar. Baines could deliver this from 35-yards out...

    It was rubbish! Liverpool break and hit a long-ball upto Babel. Howard rushes off his line to claim the ball before it drops to the Dutch striker.

    Everton make a double change. Off go Saha and Osman, on come Nigerian strike duo Yakubu and Anichebe.

    Heitinga gets instructions from Moyes as the game is stopped.

    Two new strikers but no new tactics for Everton as Distin launches the ball up the pitch to Yakubu. Everton need to be more creative than that.

    Babel holds possession as Liverpool's lone striker and wins a freekick from Arteta. Good play from the Dutchman, who had no support.

    Another Everton move fails to penetrate Liverpool's defence and Gerrard launches a counter-attack. Babel is clean through on goal but the flag is up for offside.

    Reina takes his time over taking a goalkick. It seems Liverpool are happy for it to stay 1-0.

    Arteta and Peinaar both attempt to slide passes through to the Everton strikers but both Anichebe and Yakubu look a little rusty after coming off the subs bench and the moves breakdown.

    Maxi stays down following a tackle from Neville. More time ticks away.

    Everton are having plenty of possession on the half-way line but can't seem to find the key to unlock the massed Liverpool defence.

    The Everton fans are starting to look at their watches.

    Arteta begins a counter-attack and Baines wins a corner. Gerrard and then Kuyt head clear for Liverpool.

    Peinaar is floored by a tackle from Gerrard, who clatters the player.

    Anichebe is furious with Gerrard and starts to shove random Liverpool players all over the place. Gerrard gets booked for the late tackle and Anichebe is booked for his reaction.

    The game still hasn't restarted.

    Heitinga with another hoof up the pitch to Cahill, which is once again unsuccessful.

    Yakubu gives Carragher a shove in the back as he tries to clear the ball and another time-sapping freekick goes Liverpool's way.

    Babel runs at the Everton defence. Arteta has tracked the Dutchman's run and makes a good tackle on the edge of the penalty area.

    Yakubu brings the ball under control, shrugs off his defender and fires off a shot that Reina palms past the post. Yakubu created that from nothing.

    Neville lofts the ball to the back post. Reina comes out to punch and makes a complete mess of it. Luckily for Liverpool the flag is up for offside.

    Donovan runs at the Liverpool defence. He attempts a quick pass to Yakubu, but it is cut out by Agger.

    Anichebe beats his defender. The striker has a great chance to shoot, but delays too long and Lucas gets back to block Anichebe's effort.

     Liverpool make a change. Maxi, who has had a quietly efficient match, is replaced by Aurelio.

     Everton have a throw, deep in Liverpool territory, but it comes to nothing.

     The Liverpool fans start celebrating... but there is a few seconds to go yet. One more chance for Everton?

     Peinaar gives Gerrard a little nudge in midfield. The ref deems it worthy of a second yellow card and Peinaar is sent off.

     The final whistle blows and Anfield errupts in celebration!

     A great result for Liverpool, who had to play the majority of the match with ten men. Everton kept hoofing it long and the Reds defence held strong.

     Everton's lack of cutting edge was disappointing, but Liverpool's resilience was impressive. Another derby win and another three points for Rafa Benitez.
