2. Gerard Houllier makes five changes to the side that faced Blackburn in mid-week. Dudek, Finnan, Kewell, Smicer and Owen return to the starting line-up. Fulham start with a five man midfield supporting Louis Saha as the lone striker. Referee Steve Bennett has been taken ill so the match official today will be Rob Styles

3. A long searching ball from Hypia nearly puts Owen in but he can't stretch to reach the ball.

   A Kewell run and exchange of passes with Smicer puts Heskey in but he is not aware enough to exploit the move and Fulham clear.

   A period of pressure from Liverpool results in the first corner of the game which proves a simple take for Crossley.

   A spell of scrappy midfield play preceeds a strong Gerrard run, pass to Kewell and treaded ball to far ahead of Owen.

   A long ball from Melville over the back of the Liverpool defence runs just too far for Saha who was free and Dudek claims easily.

   Fulhams first attempt on goal sees Pembridge send a diping shot from the edge of the area over the crossbar.

   A dual between the giant frames of Knight and eskey leads to Liverpools second corner. Hypia gets a free header that Crossley does well to save.

    A second corner is again put behind by a Fulham man for a third corner in succession which comes to nothing.

    A Traore run breaks down leaving space at the back for Saha to exploit and he almost beats Dudek in a race to the ball on the edge of the area. The Liverpool keeper misses the ball and is grateful to see Hypia in attendance to clear up calmly.

    Patient passing in the Liverpool midfield eventually gives Murphy the chance to play Owen in behind the defence out wide and Knight has to clear for a corner.

    Finnan - being booed by a small section of the crowd - whips in a measured cross aimed for Heskey. The big striker gets in front of the defence to volley past Crossley for the opening goal.

    Knight gives the ball away very cheaply to Smicer in Fulham's half but he is unable to make the most of the opportunity presented and is tackled on the edge of the area.

    Liverpool are pressurising in midfield and wrestle possession away from Fulham in their own half - not for the first time.

    Smicer is encouraged by the Fulham defence backing off him to shoot from distance. The shot is easily claimed by Crossley.

    A strong challenge from Boa Morte sees him break up a Liverpool attacked but he is then fouled by Murphy. The long free-kick is dealt with comfortably by the Liverpool defence.

    Liverpool are begining to run the game with Gerrard - who is sitting very deep - and Murphy seeing a lot of the ball in midfield.

    Louis Saha, taking down a long forward pass, is harshly judged to be off-side. A let off for the Reds.

    A heavy tackle by Traore grounds Fulham captain Lee Clark but is adjudged to have been fair by the referee. Liverpool put the ball out so that Clark can recieve treatment.

    The ball is passed from team to team through a series of strong midfield challenges. Eventually a free-kick is awarded against Owen.

    A huge throw-in from Djetou bounces dangerously in the Liverpool box but Boa Morte struggles to put any power on his header and Hyypia clears.

    A lung bursting right wing run from on-loan Volz takes the ball deep into Liverpool territory. Malbranque takes over and his deflected pass finds Louis Saha free in the six yard box. A composed finish from the Frenchman gives Dudek no chance and Fulham are level.

    Gerrard plays a great ball over the top for Owen to chase. The striker looks to have a clear run on goal but is harshly halted by a close off-side decision.

    The early fast tempo of the match has returned following Fulham's equaliser with both sides competing fiercely in midfield.

    A free-kick into the Liverpool area is not dealt with and Clark snatches at a shot which deflects of a red shirt.

    A mazy Malbranque run promises a lot but his final ball lets him down.

    Saha emerges from a midfield mele to force room for a shot from the corner of the area which Dudek turns round his near post as the half draws to a close.

    Kewell whips in a left footed free-kick from the right touchline that flashes past a number of Liverpool players and out for a goal-kick.

    Louis Saha is given the opportunity of a clear strike on goal from 18 yards. The shot is struck with venom but an amazing mid-air one handed save from Dudek denies Fulham the lead.

    Fulham pressure in midfield again sees the ball break to Saha on the edge of the box and, never afraid to shoot, he trys his luck. A mucj more comfortable save for Dudek this time.

    The ball is quickly moved upfield by Liverpool and Kewell, twisting and turning, puts a shot just wide of the upright from just outside the six-yard box.

    A Mlabranque free-kick from the left touchline is punched decisively clear by Dudek.

    Danny Murphy picks up the first yellow card of the day as he leaves Malbranque in pain on the floor. Leading with raised studs the Liverpool man caught his opponent on the knee, though there was little malice in the challenge.

    Heskey, out on the right wing, puts in a cross that Knight stretches to deal with.

    A period of Liverpool pressure sees Gerrard put a low, first-time cross into the box. Fulham struggle to clear and the ball falls to Kewell outside the area and he balloons his shot well over.

    Heskey appears to be struggling with a minor injury but continues to play on.

    Sharp improvisation from Owen as he just nods a bouncing ball through to Smicer and Heskey. Crossley saves but the rebound strikes Heskey who is unable to force the ball over the line. Eventually the big man shoots across the face of the goal.

    A clever turn by Saha tees up Malbranque but there are enough red shirts in the way to block his path to goal.

    Casual passing on the endge of the area loses the impetus for Liverpool that a surging Kewell run down the wing had created.

    The ball continues to be shuffled around a hectic and crowded midfield.

    A flick on by Heskey is not directed to Owen's path and Crossley collects easily.

    Crossley punts a long kick up field but it runs all the way through to his opposite number.

    Murphy gets a strong flick through that puts Smicer in a position to bear down on goal. He cleverly trys to just chip the ball over the keeper and in. Crossley, however, reads it and is able to gegt a strong hand on the ball and turn it away with a fantastic save.

    The second corner goes to the back post where the massive Knight has a free header but cannot put it on target.

    Gerard Houllier takes off Owen in a clear attempt to ease him back to first team action. He is replaced by the young Frenchman Florent Sinama-Pongolle.

    A long Henchoz clearance is shepherded back to his keeper by Melville under pressure.

    Malbranque trys to find a way through a sea of red shirts at one end and fails, whilst at the other, a rash Heskey effort is a worry only to those sat high up in the stand behind the goal.

    Clark is able to put his foot on the ball for a second in the midfield and release Malbranque who in turn spotted the running of Volz but he is unable to make anything of the opportunity.

    Boa Morte troubles the Liverpool back line and as the ball breaks, Traore trys to chest the ball back to his keeper. Boa morte is harshly pulled up for a foul on the keeper when the ball is there to be played.

    Barry Hayles comes on for the last five minutes in replace of Saha.

    A long punt from Gerrard is taken down well by Pongolle who turns Knight to draw the foul and earn his team a penalty.

    Murphy calmly side foots home the spot kick in front of the Liverpool fans to give Liverpool the lead with the clock running out.

    Liverpool clear from a Fulham long free-kick. The ball falls to Pongolle in the centre circle. The Liverpool man is then clattered by Boa Morte who leads with his studs on the youngster's leg in a horific foul. Already yellow carded, Boa Morte is given a straight red for the 'tackle.'

    Liverpool are in no rush to take a free-kick by Fulham's corner flag as their fans celebrate.

    The final whistle goes and Fulham players, unhappy with the penalty and sending off decisions, confront the referee. Liverpool players in contrast go over to salute their fans.

    A hectic game came to a dramatic conclusion with both a penalty and sending off, and Fulham were unlucky not to get something from a great game that they played a full part in. But it is Liverpool who take the spoils of an entertaining match. Fulham miss the chance to go forth, but stay a place ahead of their opponents today in sixth. Liverpool finish a good week for the club which has seen them win three times.
