3. Everton youngster Rooney plays after his international jaunt with England and he is joined in attack by Campbell.

   Newcastle get the game underway inside a sunny Goodison Park.

   Carsley slips the ball through to Rooney, who races away from the Magpies defence....

   ....The youngster blasts his shot straight a Given. The ref has given offside anyway.

   Dyer drives into the box but wier comes across to brush the midfiedler off the ball. Dyer hits the deck and appeals for the penalty. Not given

   Robert whips in a freekick from the left. Shearer picks the ball up on the right and plays it back to Robert on the edge of the box.....

   ...The Frenchman hits low shot that Wright gathers comfortably.

    Watson wins a header above Bernard. Rooney battles with Woodgate on the edge of the box and the defender manages to knick the ball clear.

    Gravesen floats the ball left to Pembridge, who takes a poor first touch but wins a corner.

12. 7'

    Gravesen aims for Watson, a former Newcastle player, in the box but Bramble gets their first to head clear.

13. 8'

    A mix up between Bramble and Bernard results in an Everton corner. Rooney recieves the ball out left and chips a good cross to the far post, but nobody is there to challenge.

    Rooney and Given collide as they both go for a cross and the young striker has come off worst. He gets some treatment but just looks winded.

15. 10'

    The Everton physio checks Rooney's ribs are all still in working order and the game is restarted.

    Gravesen hoists the ball towards Campbell but Woodgate out jumps him. Bramble fluffs his clearence but Bernard is covering at leftback.

    Stubbs has to deal with a bouncing ball and knocks a weak header back to Wright, which Shearer chases into the box.....

    ....Shearer raises his boot but Wright gets there inches before the striker and gets clattered by the onrushing player.

19. 14'

    Yobo breaks out of defence and gallops down the right flank. The defender cuts inside and fires off a hopefull shot from 30-yards.......

20. 15'

    ...his shot hits Woodgate, possibly on the arm, in the box and rebounds to Campbell, who gets fouled and Everton have a freekick.

21. 16'

    Pembridge hits a dipping 25-yard shot over the wall but Given has it covered at his near post.

22. 17'

    Gravesen collects the ball on the left and floats a cross onto the penalty spot. Weir gets a flick-on to Rooney who reacts quicker than Bernard in front of goal....

    ...Rooney heads the ball wide of Given, who is rooted to the spot, and into the back of the net from 8-yards out. GOAL!!!!!

    Rooneymania errupts inside Goodison Park.

    The ball is fired into the box to Campbell. The striker shruggs off Woodgate and hits a shot straight at Given on the turn.

    Rooney nods the ball back to Campbell, who tries to chip the ball back over the defence for his partner but Woodgate heads clear.

    Robert finds space for a cross on the left. The winger looks for Shearer in the box but Wright comes off his line to collect the ball.

    Gravesen goes into a tackle a little too wildly, in the opinion of the ref, and gets booked.

    O'Brien heads clear and Kerr breaks for Newcastle. The midfielder races down the touchline but can't find any support.

    Bellamy gets caught by Stubbs and is slow getting to his feet.

    Dyer breaks with pace. He slips the ball out left to Robert, who drives into the box and fires off a shot from a tight angle....

    ...Wright goes down to make the save but Unsworth blocks the shot clear.

33. 29'

    Everton hoist the ball towards Rooney. O'Brien looks beaten by the flight of the ball but he handles it and the ref gives a foul - but no card.

    Everton are asking all the questions as Bellamy handles the ball in midfield.

    Bramble knocks the ball up to Shearer, who flicks it on when he should have controlled it and ran at the Everton defence.

    Shearer has a chnace to run at the defence this time. He goes past Unsworth but is forced wide and so he cuts the ball back across the box.....

    ....Bellamy is racing in but Yobo sticks out a boot to clear the danger.

    Rooney cuts into the box from the left. Watson is waiting for the pull back but Rooney shoots from a tight angle and Given makes the save at his near post.

    Gravesen floats a freekick to the back post. Watson tussles with Robert for the header and the ref blows for a foul by the Everton man.

    Jenas tricks his way through the midfield as Newcastle look for a way through Everton's tight defence.

    Robert picks up possession on the left. He steps into the top corner of the box and fires off a bullet of a shot.....

    ...the pace and power of the Frenchman's shot takes the ball past Wright and rifles into the roof of the net. GOAL!!!!!

    A valuable goal for Newcastle just before the break to silence the Goodison crowd.

    Bellamy plays the ball down the line for Robert, but Yobo races across to cover for Everton.

    Jenas flicks the ball inside to Bellamy. The Welsh striker sets himself for 25-yard shot and wright turns the ball past the post.

    From the corner Woodgate smashes a header against the crossbar. The ball bounces down and away from goal as Everton clear their lines.

    Gravesen fancies his chances with a long-range strike but smashes the ball straight at Bramble.

    Watson flies into a challenge with Bramble. The Everton man misses the ball, takes out Bramble and escapes a yellow card.

49. 45'

    The ref blows for half-time.

50. Everton had all the earlier pressure but Newcastle rode the storm and fought back well.

    Everton get the second-half underway.

    Rooney gets straight into the action. He shrugs off Bernard a shoots at Given's near post, but the keeper has it covered.

    Pembridge drifts in a corner but it clears everybody and drops to Rooney on the left-wing. The striker clips the ball back into the box and Given punches clear.

    Yobo skips past Bramble's challenge. Bernard comes across to cover but concedes a corner.

    Pembridge has space to shoot on the edge of the box but the Everton man powers the ball high and wide.

    Carsley gives the ball away cheaply in midfield. Kerr probes the right flank and Newcastle win a throw.

    Kerr hits a cross-field ball for Bellamy to chase but Yobo gets there ahead of the striker.

    Woodgate plays the ball back to Given, under pressure from Rooney, and the keeper picks it up. The Goodison crowd demand a freekick but the ref says no.

    Pembridge hoists the ball into the area. Watson battles with Bernard and wins a corner.

    Pembridge launches the ball into the area. Stubbs connects with a flying header but directs it straight at Given.

    Stubbs was kicked in the face as he stooped for the header and needs some treatment.

    Stubbs is okay to continue and Given restarts the match.

    Rooney takes on Bramble with ease and whips a cross to the far post. Pembridge is there but can't connect with the cross.

    Bellamy races down the wing. He looks up to see Dyer in the box. Bellamy cuts the ball back for his teammate but Weir cuts it out.

    Campbell sucks in Bramble and knicks the ball past him. He shapes to shoot but Woodgate flies in with a fantastic block tackle.

    Gravesen switches play to the left. Pembridge hits a long-ball for Rooney but it runs out of play.

    Bernard is lying injured and Gravesen is trying to get the refs attention but play goes on.

    Everton pour forward. Campbell latches onto a through-ball and turns Woodgate in the box, the defender sticks out a foot and brings down the striker.....

    ....The ref points to the spot. Penalty.

    Meanwhile Newcastle are furious the game was not stopped for the foul on Bernard. Campbell also needs some treatment.

    Unsworth finally steps up to take the penalty....

    ...Given dives to his left and Unsworth lashes the ball straight down the middle. GOAL!!!!!!

    Everton have regained the lead and Newcastle look shaken by the circumstances surrounding the goal.

    Campbell and Bernard are both okay to continue.

    Unsworth does well to shield the ball over the line for a goalkick while under pressure.

    Newcastle must battle to get back into this match if they want to keep their title hopes alive.

    O'Brien makes a mistake in defence and Rooney races towards goal. The striker sees Pembridge to his right and sets him up for the shot.....

    ...Pembridge lines up the shot but Kerr makes an excellent sliding tackle to deny him.

    Rooney battles in midfield to win the ball and plays the ball down the line for Pembridge. The Everton player is in a foot race with Dyer and has no chance of winning.

    Rooney wins a freekick on the left of the box and Everton take their time over it.

    Pembridge aims for Weir at the near post but Newcastle clear their lines a break quickly. Dyer miscontrols the ball and the attack breaks down

    Yobo fancies his chances at taking on Robert and the Frenchman is forced to foul the defender to stop him launching an Everton attack.

    Jenas pumps the ball forward but it just runs through to Wright in the Everton goal.

    Watson attempts to thread the ball through to Rooney. Bramble reads the pass and intercepts.

    Newcastle looks set to make some changes as they chase the game.

    Kerr is replaced by Ameobi and Griffin replaces O'Brien.

    Newcastle are playing three up front now and could be caught on the counter attack.

    Ameobi wins the ball ahead of Weir and then fouls Unsworth as he battles to keep possession on the edge of the Everton area.

    Unsworth has stayed down and the physio is on giving him some treatment.

    Shearer slips the ball out to Robert, who can't get past Watson.

    Campbell looks up and spots the run of Rooney. his throughball is too heavy and Given rushes off his line to hoof the ball clear.

    Ameobi runs at Unsworth. The defender decides to exact some revenge and fouls the striker on the right of the box.

    Robert stupidly goes for goal from the freekick and hits his shot over the bar.

    Everton make a change. Naysmith replaces Pembridge.

    Bernard makes a forward foray and slips the ball through to Bellamy. Stubbs tackles the striker, the ball bobbles to Bernard and the defender hits a shot into row Z.

    Rooney has taken a knock but is okay to continue.

    Everton a sitting back a little as time ticks away and Newcastle push forward with Robert.

    The winger fires the ball into Bellamy, who draws a foul from Unsworth in Robert territory.

    Robert smashes the freekick straight into the wall - what a waste.

     Dyer fires the ball into the area for Bellamy, who flicks the ball across the face of goal for Jenas to shoot.....

     ....The midfielder races onto the ball but shoots straight at Wright. Jenas should have done better.

     Yobo gives away a needless freekick and Robert has a chance to put a good delivery into the box.......

     ...Robert whips in a cross. Bramble rises highest in a crowded area and heads goalwards. Wright reacts well and palms the ball over the bar.

     Newcastle have one last chance from the corner and Given, the keeper, comes up for the set piece.

     Everton deal with the inswinging corner and the ref blows for fulltime.

106. Everton win 2-1 at Goodison Park and move above Merseyside rivals Liverpool to maintain their bid for European football next season.

107. Newcastle's title hopes have been severely dented by this defeat. The Magpies are six points behind Manchester United and leaders Arsenal.
