2. Wright fails a late fitness test so Simonsen starts in goal for Everton with young Ian Turner on the bench.

3. Houllier sticks with the same Liverpool side that drew 0-0 with Tottenahm in midweek.

   Everton gate the game underway at Goodison. The sun is shining and the fans are in fine voice.

   Pistone launches a long throw into the box and Everton's lack of hight results in a goalkick,

   Dudek pumps it up-field and Kewell, playing on the left-wing today, wins the header. Throw in.

   Diouf advances down the flank and Naysmith flies in with an early, welcoming tackle to the Merseyside derby. The Scot gets booked.

   Barso holds of Yobo and Linderith slams into Kewell on the flank. Freekick, but no yellow card.

   Yobo clips the ball up to Radzinski who spins and plays the throughball for Rooney. Hyypia cuts it out.

    Watson has a chance to launch an Everton attack. Hewplays a poor ball down the right-wing and Carragher is there to clear for Liverpool.

    Yobo and Baros, who looks really up for this game, battle for a headre and the ref blows for a freekick against the defender.

    Rooney dashses to the near post but Biscan sticks out a leg and diverts Watson's cross past the post.

    Radzinski picks up a loose defnsive header from Hyypia. The striker lashes a wild shot high and wide from 20-yards.

    Radzinski breaks the offside trap and drives towards goal. He lashes a cross/shot across the face of goal.....

    ....it's wide of the post and too far ahead of Rooney.

    Kewell finds himself at right-back as everton apply the pressure and the Aussie hoofs the ball clear from a throw.

    Everton win a corner. Gerrard heads it behind at the near post...another corner.....

    ...this time Pembridge finds Pistone at the near post but the Italian can't do anything with the delivery.

    Liverpool give away a freekick in their haste to clear and Pembridge lines up a 30-yard strike....

    ....The Everton man blasts his shot straight at Dudek in the Liverpool goal.

    Everton have really gone on the attack in the early stages of this game. Radzinski fires the ball just behind an advanced Rooney.

    Diuof probes down the right. He twists and turns but can only find Simonsen with his eventual cross.

    Owen gets his first chance to turn and run at the Everton defence but Yobo makes a good tackle on the edge of the box.

    Liverpool waste possession at the back and Biscan clatters into Rooney as he threatens to beat the defender. Freekick.

    Pembridge strikes from just outside the box. His shot doesn't bend back enough and whistles wide of Dudek's post.

    Kewell, Owen and Diouf work the ball forward and eventually win a corner after some good approach play.

    Kewell wastes the throw and Eveton advance.

    Kewell pumps a cross into the box. There are no red shirts there but Unsworth doesn't hear Simonsen's shout and concedes a corner...

    It's poor corner but Liverpool keep the pressure on. the ball drops to Kewell but Watson blocks his rising drive.....

    ...Kewell wants a penalty, he claims Watson used his hand, and is still concentrating on his claims when the ball drops to his feet and he lashes a shot over the bar.

    Pembridge clips the ball over the defence and Radzinski races clear. The Canadian can't get the ball down and Biscan makes a great challenge in the box.

    Kewell and Gerrard stand over a freekick, 36-yards out....

    ...Gerrard plays it wide to Diouf, who only manages to win a throw of Linderoth.

    Linderoth gives the ball away in midfield and baros collects. He races in a trademark straight line and Watson is there to make the tackle.

    Naysmith pounces on loose ball outside the Liverpool box but can't get any power in his shot.

    Owen clips the ball into the middle for Kewell. The Aussie races towards the defence, finds some space and lashes a long-range shot straight at Simonsen.

    A scrappy battle in the middle of the pitch results in an Everton freekick in the centre circle.

    Pembridge whips in a good corner, Finnan flicks the ball and Liverpool hoof the ball clear.

    Gerrard tees up Smicer for a long-range shot but the Czech can only find row z with a wild strike.

    An entertaining match so far but the finishing has been poor. Liverpool are battling back.

    Watson takes out Diouf. Decent from the Everton midfielder results in a yellow card and a Liverpool freekick on the left of the box.....

    ...Gerrard fires it straight at the nearest defender.

    Baros goes at Yobo in the box. the defender makes a good tackle but hen brings down Carragher outside the area.

    The resulting freekick is poor but Rooney can't find Radzinksi with a long-ball forward.

    Yobo pumps a freekick inot the box, Naysmith flicks it on but Finnan gets to the ball ahead of Rooney, who fouls Finnan as he attempts to clear.

    Liverpool work the ball forward with some good possession to Diouf. The Senegal international's cross only finds Simonsen's grasp.

    Kewell rides a challenge in midfield and flicks the ball through the Everton defence to Owen, who races towards goal.....

    ....Simonsen rushes off his line and Owen slots the ball around him, off the post and into the net. GOAL!!!!

    Liverpool have doubled their goal tally for the season and take a 1-0 lead at Goodison.

    Rooney drives forward and combines with Watson on the left. Watson returns the ball to Rooney in the box but he can only toe poke his shot straight a Dudek.

    Liverpool break from the rebound. Owen finds himself with space for the shot but this time Simonsen saves low to his left.

    the game has really opened up towards the end of the half as a rising Kewell drive forces Simonsen to make another diving save.

    Carragher gives away a freekick as the half approaches. Everton pack the box and clip the ball in....

    ...Naysmith raises his arm as he battles for a header with Hyypia and the ref gives a freekick.

    That's it! The ref brings the half to a close, just as it sparked into life.

56. Everton started the half well but Liverpool battled back and probably deserve their 1-0 lead at the break.

    Gravesen has replaced Unsworth for the second-half. Liverpool get the action underway.

    Gravesen gets an early touch of the ball and draws a foul from Smicer. Stubbs lines up the freekick....

    ..Stubbs makes a fake run and Pembridge strikes it towards the top corner. Dudek leaps across and blocks the shot, but can't control it....

    ...Radzinksi prods at the loose ball but Liverpool eventually smuggle the ball clear.

    Owen flicks the ball inside for Smicer, who hits a rasping drive and Simonsen palms it away. Linderoth saves the corner.

    Kewell and Pistone collide. Kewell gets booked for high feet.

    Pistone gets to his feet after some treatment.

    Kewell hits a long-ball down the line for Baros, who shrugs off Yobo and drives into the area from the left....

    ...Baros looks up and spots Owen arriving in the box. The Czech tees up Owen for the shot and he finds the back of the net with a low drive. GOAL!!!

    2-0 to Liverpool and a huge blow for Everton who had started well.

    Gravesen pumps in a corner, Rooney steps off the line and flicks the ball towards goal. Dudek makes an instinctive save from close range. Rooney thought he had scored.

    Gravesen hits a high-ball into the area and Dudek jumps with Rooney. The ball ends up in the net but the ref has blown for a foul on the keeper.

    Kewell puts the pressure on Pistone, but the Italian does well to turn and clear his lines.

    Pistone hits a low cross into the area for Watson, who wins a corner for Everton.

    Pembridge whips in the corner and Dudek comes off his line to punch the ball clear.

    Rooney beats the offside trap and races towards goal. The Liverpool defenders are recovering and forcing the youngster wide.....

    ...Rooney drags his low, long-range shot wide of the far post.

    Liverpool charge forward. Pistone allows Owen to turn onto his right foot and the Liverpool striker hits a shot that Simonsen palms over the bar.

    Radzinski brings the ball forward and finds Watson on the right of the box. The midfielder hits a low drive and Carragher slides across the pitch to block the shot.

    Gravesen brings the ball out of defence and Everton look to break. Pistone gets the ball on the right but plays a poor pass that results in a Liverpool throw.

    Baros gets booked for persistent fouling.

    Kewell finds Baros, who continues to trouble Everton, wide on the right but this time he cna't conjure any magic.

    Houllier looks to be preparing to make some substitutions on the sidelines.

    everton are finding it difficult to clear the ball. Gerrard's tigerish tackling has much to do with that.

    Gravesen, who has been bright since he came on, delivers a cross from the left. Rooney rises highest but directs his header wide of the post. He should have found the target.

    Everton are the first to make a change and Linderoth is replaced by Scottish striker Ferguson.

    Houllier follows suit and replaces Baros and Smicer with Heskey and Murphy.

    Radzinski looks to race onot a long-ball forward but Dudek rushes off his line and collects the ball at the striker's feet.

    Kewell clips the ball into the box from the left and Heskey's first touch is a glancing header that goes wide.

    Radzinski probes the the flank. He beats Finnan but Gerrard provides cover for the right-back with a great tackle.

    Gerrard fouls Rooney and Everton have a freekick in a great positon. The substitute Ferguson steps up....

    ....Ferguson hits it left footed, his strike beats Dudek but hits the bar and bounces clear.

    Everton a really fighting to get back into this derby clash.

    Hyypia thwarts another Everton attack and strokes the ball forward to Owen, who fouls Stubbs as he attempts to head towards goal.

    Diouf clips the ball down the line for Owen. Simonsen rushes out to block the striker's route to goal but Owen drifts to the left of the box and clips the ball into the box...

    ...Stubbs covers for the keeper and heads the ball out of the goal mouth. Kewell pounces on the clearence and drives the ball home in Simonsen's absence. GOAL!!!

    That's Kewell's fist competitve goal for Liverpool and surely wraps up the victory for the Reds. 3-0.

    Rooney's frustration boils over and he gets booked for a combination of a foul and his reaction to the decision.

    Ferguson heads the ball down for Watson but Carragher sees the danger and hoofs the ball clear.

    Everton win a corner. Kewell and Rooney go nose to nose in the box and the ref calls them both over to calm things down.

    Liverpool break from the corner and Owen finds himself one-on-one with Naysmith.....

    ...The striker opts to go right and Naysmith makes a fantastic challenge in the box to flick the ball away from Owen.

    Owen is denied his hat-trick by some great defending as time ticks away.

     Liverpool make their final substitution. Diouf, who had a lively game for the Reds, is replaced by Riise.

     Rooney wins a freekick from a soft challenge by Gerrard and Everton have the chance for a consolation goal.

     The freekick is lofted to the back post. Dudek jumps to collect the ball but Ferguson is rushing in to challenge the keeper...

     ...Dudek gets there first and Ferguson bundles the keeper into the back of the net. The ref, unsurprisingly, blows for a foul.

     Heskey gallops down the right flank. He has Owen lurking in the box but his cross/shot misses both Owen and the goal.

     Its all over! The ref blows the full-time whistle and Liverpool win the Merseyside derby 3-0.

106. Houllier was under pressure before this game but his side responded with their best result against Everton for 20-years.

107. It's Everton who have all the problems to solve, while Liverpool seem to have stumbled upon winning formation.
