Manchester United – Manchester City

1. The Manchester derby. Is there anything else to say? Pride, passion and points all on the line. All the action from Old Trafford, right here from kick off @ 16:05 UK time.

2. Wayne Rooney has been left on the bench for the Manchester derby, with Alan Smith partnering Louis Saha up front for United.

3. As expected, Kevin Keegan stuck with the same side that started last week's home draw with Norwich.

4. There's a fantastic atmosphere at Old Trafford as the players enter the stadium. Can United find the goals to see off their rivals? I don't know, but we're about to find out...

   United kick off and Ronaldo is immediately obstructed by Bosvelt. The winger gets a whack in his face and doesn't look terribly happy.

   Bosvelt, famously, left Dennis Irwin's career on the line with an awful tackle in a Champions League game during his time with Feyenoord.

7. 2'

   Mills times his tackle well as Ronaldo breaks down the right. Corner to the home side, but it's headed clear by Bosvelt.

8. 3'

   Saha breaks free and is found by Scholes. The Frenchman beats James with his shot but it's cleared off the line by Jordan. Great start by the Reds.

   United pile the pressure again, and Mills is forced to clear under pressure at the far post. Jordan and Saha then collide on the edge of the box, and both look a bit groggy.

    It's Rio Ferdinand's birthday today, readers. I'm sure you'll all join my in expressing best wishes. United are dominant.

    City are giving the ball away far too often, but Neville helps out the Blues by slicing his cross horribly. Anelka heads well wide from Sibierski's cross.

    City have been lucky not to give away two penalties in the first ten minutes. Meanwhile, Jordan returns to the pitch after having two stiches in his eyebrow following his clash with Saha.

    Dunne concedes a corner as Saha breaks down the left, but Sibierski clears with a good defensive header.

    McManaman is being booed by the United fans every time he touches it. At least, I presume it's the United fans...

    Ronaldo breaks and fires a shot in, but James collects easily. White-Phillips is playing very deep for City; almost as a fifth midfielder.

    Successive corners for United, City break through Anelka but he mis-hits just as he attempted to find an unmarked Wright-Phillips.

    Dunne and Saha clash off the ball as the Frenchman leaves his boot in as Dunne clears. Funny really, because Dunne would crush Saha in any sort of scrap.

    Saha beats Dunne easily, but his low cross is cleared by Mills. It's an incredibly one-sided match so far; I'm unsure as to how it's still level.

    Ronaldo teases Mills again, and the right-back is forced to give away a corner. Mills could do with some more support from Flood on the right-hand side.

    Flood wins a free-kick in a dangerous position after he is felled by Keane. Referee Poll brings out the yellow card.

    Distin wins a header from the free-kick, but he finds only Carroll at the near post.

    Mills is the busiest player on the pitch at the moment, having to deal with Ronaldo. United are looking for the Portugese winger at every opportunity.

    Anelka looks a little lost up front on his own, though he's being supported occasionally by Siberiski. McManaman is caught by Miller.

    Jordan is having a bit of a nightmare with the ball, though he's defending solidly enough. City need to put a few passes together, to build some confidence.

    Mills fouls Ronaldo on the edge of the box. Very dangerous position.

    Ronaldo blasts straight at the wall after much posturing and gesticulation from all concerned.

    Smith's header is easily claimed by James. Smith, apparently, is the only player to play in all United's Premiership games this season.

    More desperate defending from City, but they're doing okay at the moment. Absolutely no threat up front though. SWP has barely touched the ball so far.

    Carroll prevents the corner with some quick work after a Jordan cross was deflected. Jordan halts United's break by bringing down Smith.

    Mills is warned by Referee Poll after the linesman spotted a 'coming together.'

    More United pressure as City gift possession away again. Keane's cross is blocked, though, and City take the chance to knock a few passes together.

    City throw in a deep position, but Sibierski's cross evades Anelka. Saha breaks but can't bring the ball under control.

    James saves a swerving shot from Ronaldo, and the rebound, fortunately for City, falls to SWP. More luck.

    Finally City get the ball to SWP's feet though, after a good run, his shot is blocked.

    Another United corner as Bosvelt cuts out Neville's cross. This is the home side's seventh corner.

    Another disappointing set-piece from Ronaldo, as the corner is easily cut out at the near post.

    Flood breaks down the left, but his pass to release SWP is far too hard. A missed chance for City to get a decent shot away.

    Ronaldo slings a cross out of play, to jeers of derision from the City fans. It inspires a rendition of 'Blue Moon'.

    Another important defensive header from Dunne. He's been a giant at the back for City, who look like they could go in at half-time level.

    Smith shoots from distance, but it's miles wide. McManaman was labouring back. He's been useless so far for City.

    HALF-TIME: City go in level, but they're incredibly lucky to do so. United have dominated possession and had a couple of decent penalty shouts turned down.

    Giggs is on for United, as the home side look for all three points. Giggs has played in 19 previous derbys. He comes on for Liam Miller.

    Scholes finds Saha but the striker is just off-side. Narrow call. Scholes clatters Sibierski.

    Dunne's cushioned defensive header sets up a City break, but they give the ball away and James is forced to parry a cross.

    SWP breaks, and runs at Heinze but he loses out. City win a corner though; their first of the match. Flood's volley goes out for a throw-in.

    Distin bundles over a breaking Saha, but the referee gives nothing. Replays show he's probably right.

    There's been a couple more attacking moments of promise for City at the start of the half. It's much more open.

    Smith narrowly fails to get on the end of a flicked header at the back post; more great defending from Mills.

    Silvestre finds Giggs in the box and his header picks out Saha. Fortunately, an off-side flag comes to City's rescue.

    Good, well-timed tackle fro Jordan as Ronaldo breaks in to the box. Shouts for handball against Bosvelt, but replays show the ball hit his chest.

    Another corner as Ronaldo tricks his way down the right. Distin clears, but at the expense of another corner. This time, City defend it well.

    SWP gets the chance to run again, but he loses the ball on the edge of the box. He's looked sluggish today.

    James beats Giggs with a lovely shimmy, but then panics as he's about to clear. He then fumbles an easy claim and confusion reigns before City clear.

    Smith is booked after a late challenge on Bosvelt.

    Giggs skins McManaman but he scuffs his cross. He's had an impact since coming on, certainly.

    Rooney begins to warm-up on the sidelines. SWP can't find Anelka with a pass down the channel.

    Another brilliant defensive header from Dunne with smith lurking. A 12th corner for United.

    Smith's overhead kick is instinctively cleared off the line by McManaman. Great effort from Smith, and an incredible clearance from the former England man.

    City can't really get out of their own half at the moment. It's constant United pressure.

    Scholes bursts through in the area, but a desperate challenge from Jordan keeps him out.

    SWP is crowded out by three United defenders. More crosses are kept out, and Saha is adjudged off-side when they do finally get through.

    Saha finds Giggs clean through, but the winger shoots wide when one-on-one with James. Great chance; the best of the match.

    City break, but they allow the United players back and to get in to position. Anelka flagged for off-side.

    A little possession for City, but it breaks down at the edge of the box. The visitors have shown no ambition here today.

    City break, but McManaman's ball to Anelka is cut out. Flood breaks again but loses out to Heinze.

    Anelka is off-side as Sibierski tries to find him in the box. Rooney's top comes off in the dugout.

    City looking comfortable, but there's still a long way to go. It looks like Scholes might be the man to come off.

    Anelka almost gets on the end of a James kick, but he's out-muscled by Silvestre.

    SUB: Rooney on for Scholes. Great reception for Rooney. He's had a bit of a virus, apparently, which explains his absence from the starting line-up.

    Keane slices a volley well wide from another quick United break.

    Another long-range volley goes well wide from Smith. United have only had five shots on target.

    More solid defending from Dunne as Rooney looked to burst through. He's been so solid today, Dunne.

    SWP needs treatment after a clash with Heinze. Keegan is looking to get some instructions to his men for the last few minutes.

    Mills is fouled by Saha to relieve a bit of pressure. Ferguson doesn't look happy with his charges. Giggs and Ronaldo swap wings.

    Saha caught off-side again from a long-ball from Heinze. He looks very frustrated. Jordan fouls Giggs.

    Flood defends well but then he is booked for dragging down Heinze as he tries to burst past the Argentinian.

    Distin's flicked header from Gigg's cross drifts just wide of the far post. The Frenchman's smile betrays his relief.

    Anelka and SWP break brilliantly and set-up McManaman, but he shoots well over. A wasted chance.

    Saha is off-side for seemingly the 20th time this afternoon. Again, the striker doesn't agree.

    OFF! Smith is sent off for a second yellow card after a late challenge on Dunne. It was the right decision.

    Great turn from Rooney, but Dunne brilliantly gets across to block the shot. Corner, well cleared.

    Flood defends well, but United are piling on the pressure in injury time.

    Saha heads wide from six yards out. A bad miss from Saha, as James was probably beaten. City have defended well, but they have ridden their luck, certainly.

    SWp dribbles around Ronaldo in his own area. This is heart-in-mouth stuff for the City fans.

    FULL-TIME: City hang on, and United are left frustrated. Good game, very entertaining. Dunne and Distin were immense.
