Chelsea – Manchester City

1. Jiri Jarosik wins a first Premiership start for Chelsea as they bid to right their only wrong in the league this season - a 1-0 reverse at the City of Manchester Stadium.

2. Chelsea also make a second change; Kezman coming in for Thiago. City, meanwhile, drop Macken for Sibierski, who partners Fowler up front.

3. Call me bold. Call me stupid. But I think City are going to stun the world of football and take all the points today.

4. City are a ridiculous, pantomime of a football club. They are managed by a certifiable loon. They have Shaun Wright-Phillips. This is a football club capable of being beaten by Oldham, yet also of getting points at Old Trafford and Highbury. Can we add Stamford Bridge to that list?

5. Chelsea kick off. The weather is surly, if not exactly grumpy. City win an early throw-in.

   Barton lofts a ball in to the box, but Fowler, under pressure from Ferreira, heads well wide. There's already a decent atmosphere inside the ground. Which is nice.

   Thatcher bundles over Ferreira near the City touch-line, but the officials aren't sympathetic to the Portuguese full-back's pleas for a free-kick.

   This will be the first look for many fans at City's new left-winger, Kiki Musampa. He's an African-born Dutch international, with outstanding hair.

   Kezman pounces on a knock down from Gudjohnsen, and throws himself to the ground after entering the proximity of the colossal Richard Dunne. A terrible dive, that goes unpunished.

    Mills lofts a free-kick deep in to the Chelsea box, but Chelsea defend with ease. Television cameras pick out Sven Goran Erikkson in the crowd. I wonder who he's got his eye on?

    SWP has not had much chance to get on the ball so far, but City have made a decent enough start. Mills defends well under pressure from Duff in the City area.

    Fowler is up front on his own, with Sibierski coming from a bit deeper. There is going to be a lot of work for the former Liverpool man if City can't get support up to him.

    Ferreira breaks down the right, but Musampa shows admireable defensive solidity to shepherd him and the ball out of play. A fairly quiet start to the match.

    Barton almost slips in SWP down the right channel, but Bridge defends well and Chelsea emerge with a goal-kick.

    Chelsea have been unable to get in to their stride so far; City are hassling their midfielders well.

    How much will Chelsea miss Robben? Well, he's certainly an important player for them, and they've lacked any sort of cutting edge so far in this match. Early days, of course...

    This is one occasion when the Manchester City team will have the backing of their rivals United, with the Reds desperately hoping that Chelsea might slip up and drop points.

    Sibierski has a shot blocked on the edge of the area, before SWP breaks past two defenders and fires over a dangerous cross.

    Dunne crashes in to Kezman, and leaves the Serbian holding his thigh on the touchline. He looks a little bemused, like a man in the perfume section of Debenhams.

    Distin outpaces Kezman as both chase through a Ferreira through-ball. Good pace from the City captain, and James completes the clearance.

    Jarosik breaks through the middle, but Bosvelt gets a challenge in just as the Czech international eyes a shot.

    Mills clatters in to John Terry as the England defender clears the ball. He doesn't look terribly amused at being dumped on the floor, but manages to contain his rage.

    Lots of possession for Chelsea, but they're finding it difficult to break down the visitors.

    Barton gives the ball away in a dangerous area, and Duff slams a shot well wide. James watches with some disdain as it passes his goal.

    Lampard is becoming increasingly involved in the action, but looks a little frustrated at being unable to thread a through-ball through to one of his front men.

    Fowler is somehow adjudged to have fouled Gallas as he hunts down a loose ball.

    Barton gets a bit cute as he tries a first-time ball to Musampa, and Chelsea break. It comes to nothing though. City defending fairly deep.

    Distin reads Gudjohnsen's knock-down well, and clears. The ball falls to Jarosik, who slices a shot horribly wide. Very ugly.

    Sibierski is laid low by a thumping arial challenge from Terry. Sibierski missed City's home match in mid-week against Newcastle; he had flu.

    Mills is booed by the Chelsea fans as he takes a throw-in. He seems fine with it. He links up well with Bosvelt before firing a woeful cross in to the stand behind the goal.

    Sibierski is fouled by Makalele in the centre circle. Thatcher hoofs the free-kick in to the Chelsea box, and the ball drops to Fowler. His shot is easily saved by Cech.

    No real signs that Chelsea are panicing, but I'm sure they'd like a goal to settle any nerves.

    Duff turns Thatcher inside the box and fires a low shot towards the near post. James gets down to save well, but Kezman manages to somehow stumble over the rebound and fluff it wide.

    The big screen shows a replay of Kezman's miss; 35,000 groans won't help the Serbian striker's confidence.

    Lampard swings over a corner, Jarosik finds a yard or two of space and fires a header goalwards. James tips the ball over for a second corner.

    Lampard, frustrated at so many white shirts in front of him, decides to shoot from distance. He scuffs it, rather, and City break.

    Musampa has the chance to run at Ferreira, but seems to lack the confidence to go past him. In the end, he wins a throw; a little disappointing not to see him have a run at the full-back.

    Thatcher covers well as Gudjohnsen bursts through. A poor kick from James ends, finally, at the feet of Kezman, who fires in a hard shot from a tight angle. James saves.

    Somehow the ball stays out of the City goal after Gallas' heads goalwards from a corner. The visitors then break, SWP finds Fowler, but his low header from six yards drifts wide.

    It was a truly woeful effort from Fowler; he should have buried his header a moment or two ago. Disappointing for City, after they have survived a tough spell from the home side.

    Makalele is booked for a cynical foul on Sibierski as the City man looked to break.

    City were the last club to keep a Premiership clean sheet against Chelsea. They're only a couple of minutes to going in at half-time on level terms once more.

    James and Thatcher contrive to almost gift the home side a goal, after showboating a little following a defensive throw-in. Fortunately, the linesman's flag comes to their rescue. Smiles all round, except on the City bench where Keegan clutches his heart.

    Musampa fouls Duff 45 yards out. The ball ends at the feet of Lampard, who stabs a shot goalwards. It goes well wide.

    More sloppy play from City almost lets in Lampard. The visitors are living dangerously. Two added minutes at the end of the half.

    SWP teases Bridge down the right and wins a late corner, City's first of the match. Lampard manages to get his head on it, and Cech claims the loose ball.

    HALF-TIME: City keep out the leaders, though it got a little frantic towards the end of the half. Fowler had a great chance to put the visitors a goal-up, but somehow headed wide.

    Chelsea have now broken the Premiership record for time spent without conceding a goal. This is history in the making. In time, people will ask: Where were you when someone finally scored against Chelsea? So, make sure you remember.

    No changes at half-time. City, I think, will be delighted with a point from this game. Chelsea, I think, won't be. So, we might see the introduction of Joe Cole at some point.

    Jarosik finds Kezman on the edge of the box, and his low shot is well saved by James. Referee Webb awards Chelsea a free-kick, but nothing comes of it.

    Thatcher makes no attempt to play the ball against Kezman, but somehow wins a free-kick. I'm as confused as anyone else.

    Joey Barton battles for the ball on the edge of the Chelsea box, and his snap shot slips just wide of Cech's post.

    Kezman is given off-side as he breaks through; replays show it might have been a close decision. Another little incident that has fallen in City's favour. The Gods are smiling on the visitors so far this afternoon.

    Kezman has plenty to say after he is given off-side for the second time in two minutes. James was out of his box quickly to clear anyway.

    Lampard's determined run down the left channel earns the home side a corner. Dunne meets the cross with a solid head.

    Bridge and Barton dance the tango on the left touchline, but it's City who emerge with the throw.

    City, as always, have plenty of players back to snuff out another Chelsea attack.

    Duff finds some space in the City box. His low cross is met by Gudjohnsen, but he can't quite get enough on the ball. James was well beaten.

    SWp beats a couple of men through the middle before firing a low shot just wide of the post. Good effort from the little winger. City need him on the ball.

    SUB: Thiago on for Jarosik. The Czech has done reasonably well on his first Premiership start, but he makes way for the Portuguese midfielder.

    Sibierski battles for the ball on the edge of the box. The ball breaks towards Fowler, but Cech pounces before the City man can flick the ball goalwards. Cech requires treatment for a slight kick to the mouth.

    John Terry is also receiving treatment for a mouth wound. Lots of blood flowing at the moment. The Chelsea physio doesn't look too concerned as he checks the dental work of Terry and Cech.

    Mourinho is out of his dug-out to yell some instructions on to the pitch. He doesn't look happy.

    Musampa hasn't impressed me, readers. Let me tell you why; he gives the ball away too easily, he floats aimless balls towards no-one in particular, he's shown no willing to beat a man, and his tracking back has been sporadic at best.

    Fowler chases down a Mills clearance and forces Cech to clear in to the stand for a City throw.

    SUB: Kezman off, Joe Cole on. Kezman has been pretty poor this afternoon. Mourinho will be looking to Cole to add to his collection of goals from the bench so far this season.

    Gudjohnsen and Dunne chase down a long ball, and Dunne wins the free-kick. The Icelandic striker is booked for kicking the ball away. The first real sign of frustration from the home side.

    Thatcher fouls Cole in the Chelsea half. Cole finds some space from a Lampard through ball, but he can't quite find Gudjohnsen with a lofted cross.

    Dunne again blocks as Lampard cuts in to the box. SWP breaks on to the ball, but Terry tackles strongly. Unfortunately, and much to the annoyance of the home fans and players, Referee Webb grants City a free-kick for an earlier foul.

    Barton lofts the free-kick on to the box, but Cech takes the ball comfortably.

    Ironic cheers as Bridge wins a free-kick. There's a lot of anger around Stamford Bridge today. If I could sum up the atmosphere in one word, it would be: Grrrrrrrrrr.

    Two centre-backs have been superb today: John Terry and Richard Dunne. Similar in style and build, they have thrown themselves at everything. Good, old-fashioned defending.

    Keegan winces as Musampa gives the ball away again. Perhaps I shouldn't be so hasty in judging the young man. But judging people is what I do best...

    Referee Webb gives a free-kick on the very edge of the City area after Duff breaks past a couple of men. Bosvelt was the City man who hauled the Irish winger down. Very close to being a penalty.

    Television replays show that the offence was outside the box. That doesn't stop the Chelsea players crowding Webb and offering a different opinion.

    Makalele and Mills have a little disagreement. The referee and linesman take an interest. The veins in the side of Mills' head bulge as he protests his innocence. Lampard blasts the shot through the wall, but James somehow saves with his legs.

    That was another shaky moment for the City defence, but another one they somehow came through.

    City don't appear to have a great deal of attacking ambition at the moment. But 15 minutes is a long time to hold on against Chelsea at home.

    SWP somehow keeps hold of the ball under pressure from three Chelsea defenders. Superb close control from the City winger, in front of the watching England coach.

    Distin clears under pressure from Icelandic striker Gudjohnsen. City defending with some composure, however.

    Dunne smacks a clearance away as another dangerous ball flies in to the City box.

    Chelsea aren't offering too much that will have City worried. They look fairly patient.

    Gudjohnsen slips as Cole threads a through ball in between the City centre-backs. SWP is out-muscled in the corner.

    Mills screams in agony after Ferreira stabs him in the thigh with his studs. The referee offers absolutely no sympathy to the City man.

    Mills tackles well as Duff and Bridge look to double-team him on the Chelsea left. City still working very hard in defence.

    SWP breaks down the right to earn his team some valuable breathing space. Keegan is delighted with his star man.

    SUB: McManaman comes on for the final few minutes, replacing Sibierski. Gudjohnsen is given off-side again. Glen Johnson, a Chelsea sub, has a chat with the offending linesman.

    Another off-side decision against Gudjohnsen. Fowler holds the ball up in the corner to waste a little more time for the visitors.

    A long clearance from Cech ends in the grateful arms of James at the other end of the pitch. Musampa is doing his very best to usurp City's efforts by giving the ball away at every opportunity.

    Fowler, a willing runner all afternoon, chases down a long clearance from SWP. Chelsea are getting more and more frantic as the seconds tick by.

    Five minutes of injury time. Not entirely sure where they have come from. Richard Dunne somehow boots over the bar as Gudjohnsen pulls the trigger six yards from goal.

    Gudjohnsen again given off-side as Chelsea throw men forward. Mourinho looks disgusted.

    Musampa finally throws his body in to a challenge - and gives away a free-kick. Terry jogs forward. Lampard gets on the end of a loose ball, fires a volley goalwards from seven yards, but David James pulls off the best save you will ever, ever see.

    Replays do not lessen the brilliance of James' save. A quite magnificent effort from the City keeper, throwing himself to his right and palming wide Lampard's driven shot.

    FULL-TIME: James' save gives City a point. The visitors' defenders, every single one, were incredible throughout. Chelsea's lead is cut to nine points...
