Everton – Chelsea

1. Hi, my name is Alex and I'll be guiding you through Chelsea's trip to Everton.

2. Team news: Defender Robert Huth gets his first start of the season for Chelsea, while Didier Drogba had recovered from a knee problem.

3. Everton include James Beattie in their side for the first time since the opening day of the season, and the home side also welcome back Tony Hibbert to defence and Mikel Arteta in midfield after injuries.

4. The players emerge from the tunnel and are greeted by a full house at Goodison Park.

5. Everton kick off. They are bedecked in their traditional blue shirts and white shorts and socks. They look splendid. Chelsea play in a shirt of the faintest blue; almost like accidentally left a blue shirt in with their white wash.

   There have been plenty of high balls lofted in towards both penalty areas in the early stages; I think we can expect quite a physical battle.

7. 2'

   The fans are really getting behind the home side in the early stages; Everton have given them plenty to shout about as they put a little pressure on the champions.

   Cahill is crisply in on Makalele in midfield; free-kick to Chelsea.

   Del Horno breaks through the middle before flicking a pass out to Cole, on the left-edge of the penalty area. His first-time cross is inches too high for Drogba, though the off-side flag was up anyway.

    Chelsea win a corner when he turns Lampard's low drive around the post...

    ...Lampard plays the ball in to the near post, but Neville clears.

    It's a very bright and dry afternoon in Liverpool; excellent playing conditions.

    Tony Hibbert looks a little like a duck. I wonder if he likes bread and fish? And whether he has webbed feet?

    Nuno Valente takes a throw for Everton in the right-back position; Valente played under Mourinho at Porto, and enjoyed considerable success.

    With Everton playing Beattie and Ferguson up front, Moyes has really set his stall out; lots of long, high balls in to the front two, and hope that Cahill et al can get on the knock-downs.

    Del Horno curls a long ball in to the box. SWP collects at the far post, and chips a cross towards Drogba, but Yobo wins the header.

17. 10'

    Arteta is booked for a challenge on Del Horno. The referee takes a while to make up his decision, but he eventually, perhaps reluctantly, shows the yellow to the Spanish midfielder.

    Del Horno needs some treatment on the ankle injury he sustained in the tackle by Arteta, though he seems to be moving freely enough now.

    Del Horno is forced to put a good cross from the left behind for a corner...

    ...Arteta curls the ball in to the near post towards the run of Ferguson, but the giant striker is well tracked by Huth, who puts the ball out for a second corner...

    Oooh! Arteta this time goes to the far post, where Weir plants a header goalwards; Cech is in a good position, however, and punches clear from his goal-line.

    Chelsea immediately break through SWP, who cuts inside from the left wing and fires a shot from just inside the area; it's blocked and Everton regain possession.

    Hibbert takes the ball forward down the right wing, sending a good cross in to the middle. Huth again is up to the challenge, clearing the danger with his head.

    Oooh! Cole pops up on the right wing. He beats his marker and fires a left-foot shot in on goal, though a slight deflection takes the ball a foot or so wide of Martyn's post.

    It has been a good, bright start to the game; Everton are playing with real conviction and energy, while Chelsea look deadly on the break.

    Everton win a free-kick when Kilbane is fouled on the left wing by Gallas...

    ...Arteta curls the ball in low, but Essien meets it with a hefty boot and Chelsea clear.

    Chelsea win a corner when Cole and Del Horno combine down the left and Hibbert is forced to slide in and put the ball behind.

    Lampard curls the ball in to a crowded penalty area; Drogba wins the first header as he rises with Martyn, but Everton are quick to clear the loose ball.

    Terry seems to have caught a stray arm or an elbow to his face; replays suggest a heavy challenge in the air from Beattie may have caused the cut to the bridge of his nose, beginning to drip a little blood.

    Chelsea are being made to work very hard by Everton, who are scrapping and fighting for everything.

    Del Horno is still being booed by the Everton fans, who suspected a little play-acting when Arteta was booked after a challenge with the Chelsea left-back.

    This time SWP requires some treatment after he and Nuno Valente clashed heads in the air.

    Cahill robs Essien and fires a well-struck shot towards goal, though it hits Huth on the edge of the penalty area, knocking the German centre-back to the turf.

    Chelsea are coping reasonably well with Everton's aerial approach; Huth is winning his fair share of headers against Ferguson, and Terry is at his battling best.

    Makalele now requires the attention of the Chelsea physio as Beattie catches him with his foot as the Everton man climbed to win a header.

    This has been a really though battle for both sides; several times already, the physios have had to come on to the pitch to treat players.

    Oooh! Lampard fires a superb pass in to SWP on the edge of the area. The little winger does well to bring the ball under control, but his left-foot shot flies a yard wide of the post.

    Ferguson is furious after referee Clattenberg gives a foul against him as he tussled with Huth for a bouncing ball. This game is in danger of boiling over; neither side is refusing to back down.

    Del Horno spots Lampard in some space on the edge of the penalty area. He cuts a nice pass in to his feet, but the England midfielder's left-foot shot is straight at Martyn.

    DREADFUL! Cole flicks a good pass back to Drogba, who elects to take a difficult shot first-time; he slices it horribly wide.

    A few of the players are really relishing the physical side of this game; Terry, Essien, Beattie and Ferguson four of them.

    PENALTY! SWP brings down Cahill right on the edge of the area. It's certainly a foul, though Clattenburg had to decide whether the offence occurred inside or out of the box.

    GOAL! Beattie smashes a superb penalty in to the top corner, and Goodison Park errupts. It was a truly unsavable spot-kick.

    How will Chelsea respond to going a goal behind?

    Beattie's penalty was only Everton's second goal of the season. Chelsea didn't have too many complaints about the decision.

    Cole does well as he runs at Hibbert down the left wing. He cuts back on to his right foot and fires a low cross in towards Drogba, but Weir puts the ball out for a corner...

    ...Lampard sends the ball in to the middle, but Everton clear. The home fans are in full voice now; they can sense an upset.

    Of course, Chelsea were one-nil down at half-time last week, in their home fixture against Bolton; they scored five second-half goals to triumph 5-1...

    SWP breaks through the middle; he has Cole in support and only two Everton defenders tracking back, but his pass is poor and easily cut out by Hibbert.

    SWP has had a poor afternoon; for what seems like the umpteenth time, he gives the ball away when a team-mate is breaking beyond him.

    Chelsea are being sucked in to Everton's trap here, they are being drawn in to a real scrap.

    Valente takes a knock and gingerly trots off the field for some treatment by the Everton physio.

    BLOCK! Yobo flies across the penalty area to make a desperate block on Del Horno's well-struck shot from just inside the penalty area. Corner.

    SUB: Ferrari replaces Valente. The Portuguese left-back must have suffered quite a serious injury to be replaced at such a time.

    Cahill is down on the edge of the penalty area, taking some treatment from the rather busy Everton physio. He is taken from the field, and it doesn't look good for the young midfielder.

    HALF-TIME: Everton take a one-nil lead in to the interval after a rough-and-ready first half. Chelsea have some work to do to keep their unbeaten run alive.

    The Everton players emerge from the tunnel first. Can they survive the second half and secure only their second win of the season?

    Cahill has come out for the second half, despite the knock he took at the end of the first. No changes from either side.

    Chelsea begin the second half with their 38-match unbeaten run in real danger.

    Apparently, Cahill has shin and knee problems and the Everton medical staff will be keeping an eye on him for a few minutes.

    Del Horno lofts a ball over the top of the Everton defence, but it's too long for Cole and the ball runs out for a goalkick.

    Chelsea have seen plenty of the ball at the start of the half, though they are yet to penetrate the home side.

    Del Horno sends over a good cross that causes a problem or two for Weir and Yobo. Chelsea win a throw.

    GOAL! Lampard smashes a superb, swerving shot from 25 yards past Martyn and inside his far post. A stunning effort from the England midfielder.

    It was Chelsea's first chance of the second half, and they are now level; they will have real thoughts of going on to win this game now.

    Essien smashes a low, 25-yard shot a couple of yards wide of goal. Chelsea look really determined to go on and put this game out of Everton's sight.

    Cech does well to claim a high free-kick lofted in to the Chelsea penalty area.

    The Everton fans have been quietened by Lampard's strike; it is the travelling supporters who are making all the noise now.

    SWP does well to reach a Del Horno cross that had flown too deep for Drogba; he clips the ball back in to the middle, but Essien is penalised for a foul on Weir as they jumped for the header.

    Arteta sends in a decent cross from the right, but Cech comes out and claims comfortably.

    Chelsea look like they are preparing a substitution; there is some activity down on their bench.

    Arteta fires another good ball in to the penalty area, causing a problem for Terry and Huth, but no Everton player has gambled on the ball and it runs out for a goal-kick.

    Drogba is booked for a push on Arteta in midfield.

    SUB: Gudjohnsen on, SWP off. It hasn't been a good afternoon for the little winger, and he is replaced by the versatile Gudjohnsen.

    Perhaps a more obvious change would have been to bring Robben on to replace SWP, but Gudjohnsen will at least give Chelsea more of a threat in the air.

    Ferguson wins a header inside the Chelsea area, but Beattie fails to make contact as he swings wildly at the loose ball.

    David Moyes is on his feet inside the Everton technical area, encouraging his side. He looks concerned, although Chelsea haven't really dominated since they equalised.

    CHANCE! Essien clips a great ball in to the middle, to where Lampard had drifted in between two Everton defenders. But, from just six yards out, Lampard glances his header across the face of goal and well wide of Martyn's far post.

    OFF-SIDE! Drogba has a goal ruled out for off-side as he smashes home Lampard's cute little reverse pass. Replays show that Drogba is a yard on-side, though Gudjohnsen - not interferring with play - was in an off-side position. A bit of luck for Everton.

    Chelsea are enjoying a real spell of pressure on the Everton goal, with Essien knitting everything together; it seems only a matter of time...

    A Lampard shot from 25 yards is deflected wide for a corner...

    ...but Everton deal with the set-piece well.

    The home side are going to come under a lot of pressure in the final half-hour; have they the resilience to hang on for a precious point?

    Chelsea prepare to make a second change; Robben is readying himself on the sidelines.

    SUB: Robben replaces Joe Cole. The flying Dutch winger comes on to see if he can fashion a winner for the visitors.

    Arteta clips a good ball in to the penalty area, and Huth is forced to head the ball over his own bar as Cahill sprinted in behind him. Corner...

    ...Arteta sends the ball towards the far post, but Del Horno meets it on the volley and smashes up field.

    Chelsea are committing plenty of players forward as they press on, leaving gaps for Everton to exploit on the break.

    SUB: Davies replaces Cahill for the home side. The Australian has been suffering with a knee injury since the end of the first half, and is replaced by wide midfielder Davies.

    SUB: Crespo on, Drogba off. The Ivory Coast striker didn't seem to be expecting to be brought off; he looked a little surprised.

    Huth is adjudged to have fouled Davies in midfield; a harsh decision by the referee. Although Chelsea have pressed and had plenty possession, they haven't created many chances since they scored at the start of the half.

    Lampard beats Davies on the left flank and spreads the play out to Gallas. The full-back decides to send an early ball in to the box, but Ferrari clears with his head.

    Chelsea win another corner when Robben's first-time cross from the left is put behind by Yobo...

    ...Huth meets Robben's corner, but his header is deflected behind. Another corner...

    ...Again Huth meets Robben's set-piece, but this time he plants his header high over the crossbar.

    Marcus Bent is stripping off on the Everton bench. Ferguson will probably be the man to make way, once the change comes.

    Gudjohnsen's excellent turn on the halfway line buys him some space; he releases Robben down the left channel, but the winger runs in to traffic as he cuts in to the penalty area.

    Davies choses the wrong option as he tries to spread the play out to Kilbane, breaking down the left wing.

     SUB: Bent replaces Ferguson. The burly Scot took a knee to his ribs a few minutes ago, and he seems to be suffering a little as he trots off.

     Lampard wins his side another corner when his long-range shot balloons over the bar after taking a defelction from Weir.

     Everton deal with the corner well and break at pace up field; the ball finds its way to Davies, but his shot from 25 yards is saved by Cech.

     Huth is booked for a tackle he made a minute or so ago, the referee having allowed play to go on as Everton had possession.

     Davies brings down Essien as the Ghanaian broke in to the Everton half. Everton immediately pull 10 men back behind the ball as they desperately try to see out the final minutes without conceding.

     Bent wants a penalty as his shot hits Terry on the arm just inside the penalty area; it would have been a harsh decision, but the ball did strike the Chelsea captain on the upper-arm.

     Chelsea corner as Martyn is forced to paw away yet another Lampard shot from the edge of the area.

     The crowd are really getting behind Everton now as the game enters its final stages; the home side are seeing plenty of the ball and throwing some dangerous crosses in to the box.

     OOOH! Robben goes close as he cuts on to his left foot and drifts a deft chip a few inches over the top of the crossbar with Martyn beaten.

     Everton look well capable of hanging on; Chelsea aren't really putting the home side under all that much pressure at the moment.

     Gudjohnsen is penalised for a foul on Weir as they challenged for a high ball. Moyes is again on his feet, directing his troops. Mourinho sits casually on the Chelsea bench.

     Ferrari is booked for standing over a Chelsea free-kick, not allowing the champions to get on with the game at the pace they'd like to.

     Essien smashes a shot from distance high over the crossbar.

     There will be three minutes of added time.

     Gudjohnsen fires a good-looking ball out to the right wing where Robben was aiming to get in behind Ferrari, but the Everton full-back just manages to get his head on the ball to put it out for a throw.

     The whistles have started from the Everton fans as they try to remind the referee of the time.

     FULL-TIME: Chelsea's winning run is over as Everton claim only their fourth point of the season. Everton showed a lot of passion and pride, and Chelsea didn't have enough to break them down.

     The Everton fans and players celebrate the result as though they had beaten the champions. But they deserve to be pleased; it is only the second league game this season that they have not suffered defeat.
