Watford – Everton

1. Watford will climb off the bottom of the Barclays Premiership table with a draw or better at home to Everton, a team they have not beaten for 20 years. West Ham's defeat at Charlton meant a point would be enough to overtake Alan Curbishley's side, with the Addicks due at Vicarage Road next week. They are without injured goalkeeper Ben Foster however, with Richard Lee deputising, while Malky Mackay replaces Dan Shittu at the back.

2. Everton top scorer Andrew Johnson will play despite earlier fitness worries.

3. Watford get us underway - they're kicking towards the away supporters in this first half.

   Howard gets down well to keep out a soft Bouzza shot from maybe 30 years out.

   Not much to speak of in the first few minutes, exept to note that Vicarage Road is still one of the most charmingly weird grounds in the country. There must be about eight different stands.

   Mackay threatens the Everton goal after a Watford corner, but the ball is nodded wide.

   Cahill volleys over after a poor Watford clearance. This has the makings of a real scrappy battle.

    A period of concerted posession for Everton comes to an end when a flicked ball into the box is miscontrolled by Beattie.

    It's all Everton at the moment, but they've yet to conjur a chance of real menace.

    0-2 and Watford are in serious strife here. They haven't played badly, but they've been punished by a combination of bad defending and poor refereeing, in my opinion.

    Half-time and the boos rebound around Watford's wonky old ground. The 'Golden Boys' are in deep, deep trouble and it's hard to imagine how they can conjur a way out. Boothroyd will be earning his money if they get anything from this today.

    There's very little to say about this match. It's dull. It's like an Italian bigot's idea of English football. Short not only on technique but also imagination.

    Kabba, who, ahem, hasn't been substituted, runs into the box but fails to control the ball. It dribbles meekly out of play and Howard takes the goalkick.
