Stoke City – Tottenham Hotspur

1. Afternoon one and all. If indeed there is more than one of you. Spurs will not be relishing their trip to Stoke this afternoon. Alan Hutton returns to their backline today and up front Darren Bent is the man charged with doing something about Spurs woeful scoring form. Dave Kitson and Mamady Sidibe will be looking to do the damage for Stoke. Watch out for Rory Delap's long-range throws. The battle of the bottom two awaits...

2. The stadium announcer is whipping up a frenzy at the Britannia Stadium as the home side get the game going. Spurs are in their changed kit of light blue.

   Luka Modric is sloppy in possession and gifts Stoke a throw-in after a careless pass. Not a great start for the Croatian midfielder.

   'Sacked in the morning' is the chant from the home fans. Hmmm. Who could they possibly be singing about?

   Neat piece of play from Gareth Bale to skip past his man and clear the danger for Spurs.

   David Bentley seemed to think he had another twenty yards of pitch to gallop on to as he runs the ball out of play to the delight of the Stoke fans behind Thomas Sorensen's goal.

   Some wonderful football from Stoke gives Tom Soares a marvellous opportunity to open the scoring but his shot is well saved by Gomes. Stoke now have a throw-in...

   Delap's throw causes panic in the Spurs penalty area but they scramble the ball away. Plenty more of that to come this afternoon you would imagine...

   Gerry Francis is watching from the sidelines today. Still the proud owner of one of the finest mullets in British football.

    David Bentley bites some turf after a tough tackle from Danny Higginbotham.

    Sidibe wins a free-kick as Didier Zokora mistakes him for a climbing frame.

    Darren Bent has a header on target but it lacks the pace or accuracy to beat Sorensen. Meanwhile....

    Oh dear. Gareth Bale gets his marching orders for a challenge on Soares in the penalty area. Stoke have the penalty...

    Higginbotham has to replace the ball several times as it is being blown all over the blustery Britannia Stadium. This is almost comical.

    It doesn't distract him from the job in hand though and his wonderful penalty is struck low, hard and true past the correctly-guessing Gomes. One nil to Stoke. Spurs are in big trouble.

    The strains of Delilah are echoing around the Britannia Stadium. If Spurs lose today you can safely assume Juande Ramos will be ditching any Tom Jones albums in his collection.

    GOAL - Spurs are back in the game. Hutton cuts in from the right and his shot is charged down but finds its way to a suspiciously offside looking Darren Bent who seizes the opportunity with glee to prod home from six yards out.

    Hard tackle from Modric gives Stoke a free-kick. Spurs will need to show bite though to stay in this game.

    A fine run down the left from Lennon as he dances past two defenders and gets a decent cross in. Nothing comes of it but Spurs have gathered themselves and are now asking questions of Stoke.

    Tony Pulis is stalking the touchline flapping his arms in frustration at something. He will be expecting his side to press home their numerical advantage now.

    Delap delays his cross in from the right but when it comes Corluka is on hand to clear with a header.

    Some hardy souls are perched atop trees on a hill outside the stadium hoping to catch a glimpse of their heroes on the hallowed turf. Ah, a throwback to the golden age of the game.

    Spurs probe down the right through the industrious Hutton and the nimble Modric and the Croatian's long-range effort is not a bad one. Neither is it on target though.

    Hutton has hit Higginbotham in a rather painful part of the anatomy with the ball and the Stoke defender is momentarliy collapsed in understandable agony. Brother, we feel your pain.

    Corner to Spurs. It comes towards Corluka but Higginbotham has managed to escape his own private hell to head the ball to safety.

    Aaron Lennon is having a fine game now and he skips towards the Stoke goal before unleashing a dangerous shot which draws a decent save.

    Spurs are attacking in numbers and giving able support to their lone striker Bent. Both Jenas and Modric are looking keen to move forward but their intentions are momentarily interrupted as Lennon is penalised for a foul.

    Kitson wins a cheap free-kick as he appeared to do no more than stumble to his knees. Nobody is complaining in the Stoke team though and they now have a throw-in in a dangerous place...

    Delap launches it but Gomes rises well to punch the ball away. Spurs can breathe again.

    Hmm. Gomes's face is contorted in agony and he looks as if he has just told some awful news. In fact he has received an elbow in the face as he cleared Delap's ball and he would appear to be in a bit of pain. He'll be reet though.

    HALF-TIME: A reasonably fascinating first-half. Terrible start for the visitors but they have rallied well and it is hard to predict which way this one is going to go.

    Second half is underway and Spurs are on the attack. Zokora's cross is headed away but Spurs have singnalled their attacking intent early on.

    Woodgate is forced to the ground by Sidibe as he stretches to head Delap's throw away. Free-kick to Spurs.

    Neat turn by Bentley who then lifts the ball over two Stoke defenders heads. This does not please Higginbotham though who gets back to make an important challenge to stop the Spurs man's advance.

    Delap, again, spreads panic in the Spurs rank and Gomes is forced to punch his long throw behind for a corner. Which Spurs may feel more comfortable defending.

    Indeed, the corner is played low and short and Spurs clear it quickly. A wasted opportunity for Stoke.

    GOAL - Delap gets the goal his long-range throwing contributions have perhaps deserved. Sidibe crosses from the right between Gomes and the Spurs backline and Delap is on hand to tap in at the far post.

    Ricardo Fuller is stripping off and would appear to be about to show us his funky stuff. Who will be making way though?

    The largely anonymous Dave Kitson - if you see what I mean - is the unlucky player whose number is hoisted. He looks none too happy about it either.

    A nervous looking exchange is going on between Gus Poyet and Juande Ramos on the Spurs bench. They would have looked even more concerned just now as Spurs once more failed to deal with a Delap throw. Stoke get a corner but Sidibe's header is wide of the mark.

    Roman Pavlyuchenko has come on for David Bentley. This game has been purged of Daves.

    Modric comes so close to eqaulising as he hits a fine swerving drive which Sorensen was nowhere near. It's just wide though much to the horror of the Spurs fans behind that goal.

    Gomes makes an important save from a long range shot from Olofinjana but Delap is on hand to pounce on the rebound. He ends up winning a throw-in rather than another goal and Spurs are able to deal with that. At the other end, Hutton has gone in late on Sorensen and receives a yellow card for his challenge.

    Euww. Sorensen is pouring claret from the head wound Alan Hutton kindly, and free of charge, has provided him with. Sorensen is taken off to received some much needed knitting in his head and we now welcome Steve Simonsen to the field of play. Hello Steve. May your stay be less painful than that of your colleague.

    This getting injured malarkey seems to be catching on and now Vedran Corluka clutches his chest and is in need of a bit of TLC in the form of a magic spray.

    Corluka appears to have recovered from his chest complaints but has gone down quite alarmingly as he jumped for the ball. He is being looked at by two Spurs physios and hopefully they can get him back on his feet.

    Corluka is going to be stretchered off and there is a team of medics attending to him on the pitch. More bad news for Ramos but the immediate concern is Corluka at the minute.

    The television replay shows Corluka having a knee firmly applied to his head and it would appear to have knocked him out cold. He is still being looked at on the pitch and is now in a head brace.

    An ambulance awaits as Corluka is carried off. Hopefully he will be on the mend soon. Our thoughts are with you after what looked like a painful encounter.

    Plenty of stoppage time will be added on to this one. Can Spurs pull something out of the bag minus two of their starting line-up?

    Jenas wastes a free-kick for Spurs and they will need to do better than that if they are to get anything from this game.

    Delap's throw is punched away by Gomes but Stoke come back and win a corner.

    Woodgate remains calm to clear as a cross comes over and Spurs quickly get it up to Pavlyuchenko who almost manages to bundle his way past two Stoke defenders. Delap has other ideas though and wins the ball from the pricey Russian striker.

    Ryan Shawcross has come on for Ibrahima Sonko.

    Soares is at the centre of a neat Stoke through the middle and Fuller then tries a bit of showboating before attempting his own Maradona moment. This is Stoke though and not the Aztec stadium circa 1986 thank you very much Ricardo. Spurs defenders are there to helpfully remind him of this fact.

    Jenas hits a free-kick well over the Stoke bar and its hands on heads time for the frustrated Spurs fans behind the Stoke goal. And they haven't even got Sol Campbell to vent their anger on today.

    Jenas, again, is wasteful with the ball and the intended target of his pass, Aaron Lennon, casts him a dirty look.

    The clock is showing ninety minutes which usually means only one thing in football parlance. Not so here though. If a game is a day then right now we are just settling down for an early supper rather than brushing our teeth and heading to bed.

    Gomes boots the ball out of play much to the delight of the Stoke fans and the undoubted annoyance of the travelling Spurs crowd.

    Michael Dawson does well to stick out a boot and put the ball behind for a corner.

    Jonathan Woodgate, however, does not do well at all as he downs Tom Soares (again) to gift Stoke their second penalty.

    Unbelievable!! The penalty taken by Ricardo Fuller strikes both posts before Delap, following up, crashes the rebound against the crossbar.

    Great tackle on Higginbotham by Hutton. Higginbotham may we wondering why he did not take the second penalty after the fine job he made of Stoke's first.

    Oh dear. Michael Dawson now has been sent off. Spurs defence are having a nightmare today. Dawson is furious but the tackle on Sidibe was high and dangerous. In his defence he did appear to strike the ball initially. The referee is not interested in such intricacies though.

    FULL-TIME: Juande Ramos will be a very worried man. An enthralling game but it ends With Spurs firmly rooted to the bottom of the table and with suspensions and injuries rocking their defence the immediate future looks grim. Well done Stoke though who deserved the points today.
