Newcastle United – Tottenham Hotspur

Shearer to win a trophy in his last season? Or will it be glory, glory, Tottenham Hotspur? Let's see at 4pm GMT.

This is a fixture between two clubs with great affection for the FA Cup, though Spurs have enjoyed much more recent success than Newcastle; they have won the competition six times since the Geordies last lifted the cup in 1959.

Graeme Souness has won this competition before as a manager, guiding Liverpool to victory in 1991 against Sunderland.

There is a sensational atmosphere in St James' Park this afternoon; a full house. The Tottenham fans are making their presence felt too. I think we might be in for a good game, though don't come after me if I'm proved incorrect.

Tottenham kick off, playing in their all-yellow away strip. Both sides are using the traditional 4-4-2 formation; a peculiarity in itself this season.

Dyer breaks down the right at pace, leaves Atouba for dead, but King blocks his cut back towards Shearer.

The corner is only half-cleared. Carr sticks the ball back in to the danger-area, and Spurs win another corner. Boumsong and Kluivert clash heads as they try to direct Robert's corner goalwards.

Titus Bramble was something of an injury doubt for this game, but Souness has taken a gamble on his fitness following Newcastle's excellent recent run; they have now won six successive games.

Kanoute beats Hughes down the Tottenham right, but his centre is too deep. Newcastle play themselves in to a little trouble in their own half, but eventually clear.

GOAL! Shearer collects a ricochet and breaks in to the right side of the area. He cuts the ball back to Kluivert, who strokes the ball home from six yards.

Atouba beats a couple of men after some fine build-up play, but Bowyer is on hand to avert the danger with a well-timed tackle.

The early goal has really got the Newcastle fans excited; they seem to sense it might be their year. Having said that, they've claimed that every year since 1959.

Dyer out-paces Atouba, collects a loose ball and beats the defender on the outside. Atouba is forced to bring the midfielder down, and is booked, deservedly so.

Robert whips in the free-kick from near the dead-ball line on the right side of the area, but Tottenham clear. Kluivert is adjudged off-side.

For the second time in a couple of minutes, Newcastle get the ball to Dyer, one-on-one with Atouba. The defender again brings down Dyer, and earns a long, stern chat with Referee Styles. I imagine it was along the lines of: "One more like that, and you're off, son."

Davies does well to stay on his feet after beating Hughes on the right touchline, but his cross is comfortably chested back to Given by Carr.

Carr, famously, is a former Tottenham Hotspur player; he moved to the North East in the summer of 2004.

Spurs have been a little sloppy at times in the opening minutes; they have made a couple of defensive errors, and their attacking possession has been littered with loose passes.

Dyer finds Shearer in the left channel with a lovely pass, but the former England striker's cut back towards Bowyer is intercepted.

Tottenham win a corner after sterling work down the left from Ziegler and Atouba. Newcastle cope with the pressure well, and clear their lines.

Bramble brings down Defoe, attempting a one-two with Kanoute. No booking, to the disappointment of Davies, who has a quiet word with the referee.

Ziegler goes for goal from the free-kick, and though the youngster strikes the set-piece well, his effort is straight at Given.

Carrick, one of Tottenham's best players this season, is struggling to influence the play as often as he has done recently.

Kanoute is found down the right by a good ball from Brown, but his low cross is deflected in to the hands of a grateful Given.

Brown fouls Shearer just outside the Tottenham area. Robert lofts the ball in, Bramble heads over the bar from six yards out. The referee wrongly awards a corner, but it comes to nothing.

Dyer runs at Atouba once more; this time the defender manages to get a touch on the ball and Newcastle win yet another corner. Robert fails to beat the first man, but is consoled when Brown heads out of play to give the Frenchman a second chance.

Again, Robert fails to beat the Tottenham man on the near post; this time, Carrick heads clear. Boumsong goes down in the area under pressure from Brown, but instead of winning a penalty is booked by the referee for diving. Souness holds his head in his hands on the touchline; perhaps he has just remembered that he left the gas on back at home.

Newcastle are enjoying a good spell of possession; Spurs are struggling to get any sort of grip on the game.

Finally, Ziegler manages to get on the ball in midfield. He finds Kanoute in the area but, despite a twist and turn, he loses out to Carr.

Ziegler manages to find Kanoute again. This time the striker gets to the by-line, but Bramble races across to put the ball out of play.

The corner is taken short, but Newcastle head clear through Dyer. Spurs collect the ball again and leave a few players forward in an effort to put some pressure on the home side.

Newcastle defend well to deny Tottenham a shooting chance, but Kanoute does eventually find some space on the edge of the area; he turns, and fires a low left-foot shot in towards goal, but Given saves at his near post.

There has been a lot of midfield possession for both sides, though really good chances have been at something of a premium. Dyer has looked the most dangerous player on the pitch in the opening half-hour.

Naybet causes his team a problem or two as he attempts to dribble his way out of trouble; Bowyer and Faye hunt him down, but the veteran Moroccan manages to clear his lines.

Defoe battles and robs the ball off Bramble in the Newcastle area. The lively little striker gets to the touchline and puts over a low cross, which Kanoute deflects wide of the near post.

Shearer is down on the turf, receiving treatment for a blow he took somewhere around his throat. He goes off the field for a moment or two.

Defoe cuts in from the left and manages to get a shot away; he strikes it well, but again, Given collects the shot comfortably.

The Newcastle fans are doind their best to lift their side, who have gone a little quiet recently.

Shearer returns to the field, sporting a bandage on his chin. It looks a little like he's cut himselef shaving. Spurs win a corner; the ball comes out to Atouba, who digs a shot out from 20 yards. Given saves easily.

Remember how I told you that Bramble was an injury doubt before the game: well, he's hobbled off the field, to be replaced by Jenas.

With no defenders on the bench, Souness has been forced in to something of a re-shuffle; Jenas has gone to left-back, with Hughes moving to centre-back.

Jenas and Robert double-up on Davies, who hits the floor under the challenge. Referee Styles awards the free-kick, on the right corner of the Newcastle area.

Ziegler chips a ball towards the back post, Given makes a belated decision to punch clear under pressure.

Robert smashes a shot goalward, but it's blocked by Paramot. Robert will have to be disciplined in his defensive duties with Jenas playing out of position behind him.

Two minutes of added time. Newcastle will want to keep the ball better in an effort to close out the half.

Brown attempts to find Kanoute in some space in the Newcastle box, but the offside flag thwarts the Spurs striker.

HALF-TIME: Newcastle started very strongly, but Spurs have come back in to the game, without creating any real chances to speak of.

Tottenham kick off the second period knowing that they can really put the home side under pressure. They have problems at the back following Bramble's injury, and Spurs finished the first half strongly.

Newcastle win a free kick out on the left side of the pitch. Robert flights the ball in, but Shearer is all over his marker as he attempts to win the header in the six-yard box.

Robert is found on the left wing by a great ball from Shearer. The French winger's cross is aimed at Kluivert, but the Newcastle striker is a stride away from prodding it past Robinson.

Amdy Faye fouls Defoe 30 yards out as the striker attempted to turn. Spurs send plenty players forward, but Carrick's free-kick is easily claimed by Given.

Tottenham are throwing plenty of men forward, but Newcastle won't be too concerned about that; in Dyer, Bowyer and Robert, they have the pace to trouble Spurs on the counter.

Davies volleys wide of the post from 12 yards out; a good chance, as he had plenty time to pick his spot.

One of Spurs' problems is that their full-backs aren't very attack-minded, and rarely get forward to over-lap with the wide midfielders. They need to change that.

Spurs have Robbie Keane on the bench should Martin Jol want to change things in the next few minutes. Mido, their Egyptian loan signing, is injured.

Again Dyer breaks at pace down the right and attempts to cut the ball back towards the waiting Shearer and Kluivert. Spurs clear, but that was a dangerous moment for the visitors.

Tottenham win a corner when Ziegler's shot deflects behind off Faye. The ball drops to King, who's left-foot shot is headed away from goal by a Newcastle defender.

Jenas is doing a decent job at left-back at the moment, but it is an area that Tottenham might look to exploit; it is an alien position for the young England international.

Ziegler wins a free-kick after battling hard with Carr and Dyer on the right win. Carrick's ball in to the box is easily claimed by Given.

Dyer finds himself one-on-one wit Atouba, booked in the first half for two desperate tackles on the Newcastle midfielder. Dyer draws the tackle, thinks about going down, but instead stays on his feet and clips in a ball towards Kluivert. King clears the danger.

Carr over-laps Dyer on the right and fires in a cross which Atouba deflected out for a corner. Robert's set-piece is truely dreadful; it curls harmlessly out of play before it even reaches the near post.

Defoe steals in in front of Shay Given, who is caught out of position; Defoe can't control the ball, however, and the chance is gone.

SUB: Keane on, Atouba off. An attacking change from the Spurs manager as he looks to find an equaliser from somewhere. Keane is enjoying a good season, and looks lively.

Kanoute fouls Kluivert, 35 yards from goal. Robert lines up the free-kick; he strikes it badly, and it slices high and wide over the bar.

Kluivert seems to pull up sharply as he chases a long ball over the top from Carr.

Oooh! Given makes a superb double-save; first he reacts well to palm away Keane's drive from eight yards, then he gets a firm hand to a powerful drive as Kanoute pounces on the rebound.

SUB: Kluivert off, Ameobi on. Striker for striker, as the goal-scorer hobbles off to a good applause from the Toon faithful.

Dyer finds himself with ball at feet in the Tottenham box; he has little support and so decides to run at his marker, who manages to deflect his eventual shot out for another Newcastle corner.

Robert whips in a dangerous free-kick from the right, but Robinson comes through a crowd to punch clear. He wins the free-kick for a push amongst the melee.

Brown picks the ball up, cuts insisde from the right wing and shoots low. Boumsong gets a foot on the shot, and Spurs in a corner.

Bowyer takes a quick-free-kick and puts Ameobi through down the right channel. The young substitute bursts in to the box and attempts to find Shearer with a low cross, but the ball is deflected for a corner.

If anything, it is Newcastle that are finishing the match the stronger. They look dangerous on the counter-attack, and Spurs are leaving a lot of space at the back.

Davies fires a cross in to the near post towards Keane, but Given is alert and on-hand to collect before his Ireland team-mate can get to the ball.

Naybet is booked; he isn't very happy about the decision, and tells Referee Styles so. Keane is sensible enough to drag his team-mate away before Styles changes his card to red.

Defoe spins and fires in a left-foot shot, but he slices it a little and it flies wide of Given's near post. He's looked dangerous this afternoon, but Newcastle have been very tight on him.

Keane works himself some space inside the box with a lovely turn, but Carr is quick to deny him the chance to shoot from six yards with a desperate tackle.

SUB: Marney on, Paramot off. Another attacking substitution from Jol, brining on a young midfielder for his right-back.

Spurs are enjoying a lot of possession in the final stages, but Newcastle seem determined to hang on to this lead and join Man Utd, Arsenal and Blackburn in the semi-finals.

SUB: Robert off, Milner on. Robert takes an age to leave the pitch, but he does so to a great reception from the home fans. Ameobi is booked for a challenge on the half way line.

Defoe finds a yard of space and, predictably, shoots. Given saves well to his right, and Kanoute can't get enough on the rebound to direct the ball goalwards.

Ameobi pounces on a loose ball around the halfway line. He races at two Spurs defenders, but seems lost for ideas. A heavy touch as he reaches the Spurs area ends the run.

There is plenty of spite and aggression in the final stages as both sides fight desperately to make the last four. Brown and Bowyer clash, briefly.

Tottenham are desperate to get the ball in to the Newcastle area, but the home side are able to keep possession in the visitors' half, much to their frustration.

Spurs win a corner as Milner intercepts a low cross. Carrick flights the ball in, and Spurs bundle the ball in to the net, though Referee Styles had given a free-kick to the home side for a slight push by Gardener.

Dyer out-paces his marker and breaks in to the box. One-on-one with the goalkeeper, his shot is weak and mis-directed and Robinson saves easily.

Spurs immediately push forward, and only a heavy first touch denies Defoe and great opportunity inside the Newcastle area. Given then comes a long way to punch a cross, and Kanoute's header is cleared close to the goal-line by Carr.

Three minutes of extra time. Davies is booked for a foul on the touchline, and Newcastle take the opportunity to keep hold of the ball for a few more seconds.

Shearer and Milner run down the clock as they take their time over a free-kick in the Tottenham half.

Spurs claim strongly for a handball inside the Newcastle area. Shearer is booked for a wild challenge on Brown. Ameobi and Milner waste a three-on-one opportunity.

FULL TIME: Newcastle hang on to make the last four after Kluivert's early goal. Shearer's dream of a trophy in his final season lives on.
