3. Sunderland, meanwhile, include Newcastle fan Danny Graham. Defender Carlos Cuellar and winger James McClean also come in as Connor Wickham, Matt Kilgallon and the suspended Craig Gardner miss out.

4. Ahead of the kick-off, you can read Steven Taylor's thoughts on the match - as well as Newcastle's French revolution - <a href="http://espnfc.com/columns/story/_/id/1412301/delaney:-newcastle-defender-steven-taylor-on-the-french-influence" target="_blank">here</a>.

5. For the Sunderland perspective, Paolo Di Canio says he is expecting a <a href="http://espnfc.com/news/story/_/id/1412737/sunderland-boss-paolo-di-canio-expects-'intense'-newcastle-derby" target="_blank">"very intense" encounter</a>.

6. The teams are emerging from the tunnel to the roar of the St James' Park crowd. We are just moments away from kick-off...

7. Alan Pardew and Paolo Di Canio share a little joke on the touchline. Once the whistle blows I don't think we'll be seeing any more laughter between the two!

8. 1'

Sunderland get this Tyne-Wear derby underway...

9. 1'

Bardsley tries to clear a ball forward but he slices it and it goes out for a throw, much to the delight of the home support.

10. 2'

Debuchy looks to get on the end of a Cabaye ball forward but Rose does excellently to shield his opponent off and win the goal kick.

11. 3'

Some nice play between Marveaux and Debuchy eventually results in N'Diaye bringing down the full-back. Newcastle win a free-kick in a dangerous position.

12. 4'

Taylor gets on the end of the free-kick into the box but he is unable to direct his header anywhere near the target.

13. 5'

Sunderland come forward through Sessegnon, who plays in McClean into the box. The winger, however, wastes possession as his scuffed cross rolls off for a goal kick.

14. 6'

Yanga-Mbiwa plays a superb first-time pass to pick out the run of Cisse but Mignolet does well to rush off his line and smother the ball. A warning sign for Sunderland there as their defence was half asleep.

15. 7'

A fantastic atmosphere out there at St James' Park, and the weather is not too bad either.

16. 8'

Newcastle clear a Sunderland corner and counter up the other end through Marveaux. The midfielder picks out the run of Gouffran but his shot on goal is blocked. Great play from the home team.

17. 9'

Taylor very lucky there as he loses possession while under pressure from Sessegnon. The Sunderland man is through on goal but the referee blows for a foul. Harsh.

18. 10'

A lively start as you would expect from a Tyne-Wear derby. Both teams looking to get forward early on.

19. 11'

Some nice footwork from Marveaux before he eventually loses it. The ball falls for Tiote on the edge of the box who then tries to pick out Cisse at the far post but he just overhits it. Unlucky.

20. 12'

Bardsley hangs a dangerous cross into the Newcastle box but Krul does excellently to out-jump a sea of bodies and claim the ball at his first attempt.

21. 13'

No real clear chances as of yet, but the opening 14 minutes have been anything but boring.

22. 14'

Sessegnon picks out the feet of Graham in the box. He tries to turn and shoot but goes to ground as he loses his balance. The striker claims he was clipped, but the referee says play on.

23. 15'

Taylor does appear to pull the shirt of Graham. The Sunderland man makes a meal of it but I have seen those given before. Taylor lucky again.

24. 16'

Some nice work from Gouffran who beats a man before trying to play a reverse pass to Sissoko but he puts too much on it and it runs out for the throw.

25. 17'

Di Canio was adamant that his side should have had a penalty for that earlier incident involving Graham. There was always going to be some kind of controversy today.

26. 18'

Cabaye catches Graham with a high boot and Sunderland win a free-kick in a dangerous position. A chance to get some bodies in the box.

27. 19'

Larsson lofts the set-piece into the box. He looks to find the run of Sessegnon at the far post but he puts too much power on it and the ball sails out for a goal kick. A waste.

28. 20'

Newcastle have had 60% of possession up to now. Sunderland will certainly feel they are right in this game, though.

29. 20'

Cabaye brings down McClean for a free-kick. That will surely be the Frenchman's last warning before he receives a yellow card.

30. 21'

Some nice work from Johnson to win the corner off Gutierrez.

31. 22'

Johnson tries to pick out Graham at the far post but Newcastle get it clear. It falls to Larsson on the edge of the box but O'Shea gets in the way of his effort on goal.

32. 22'

Another minor penalty shout for Sunderland there as Graham seemed to strike the ball against Yanga-Mbiwa's hand. Would have been very harsh if it was given.

33. 23'

This is a bright spell for Sunderland. They are putting Newcastle under plenty of pressure and keeping them pegged back in their own half. They win another free-kick.

34. 23'

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/yellow_card.jpg" height="15"> Gouffran goes into the book for a heavy challenge on Johnson.

35. 24'

Johnson's free-kick is poor and he fails to even beat the first man. Newcastle get the ball clear and Marveaux looks to be in on goal but for the recovery of Rose who soon averts the dsnger. Great defending.

36. 25'

Debuchy bursts down the right and tries to pick out Gouffran in the middle with a dangerous ball but Cuellar is there with a fine defensive header to clear.

37. 26'

Sunderland doing very well to get in the faces of Newcastle at the moment and are forcing them to go backwards.

This derby is really coming alive now. That goal has set things up nicely.

Sissoko picks out Cisse with great first-time ball from the right. The striker shoots on the turn but Mignolet is there once again to deny him with another top save as he gets down low to claim it.

43. 31'

A superb response from Newcastle after conceding that goal. They are hungry for an equaliser and are continuing to pile on the pressure.

44. 32'

Debuchy looks to pick out the run of Gouffran into the box but the winger is unable to get enough contact on his header and fails to trouble Mignolet.

45. 33'

Di Canio celebrated Sessegnon's goal with real passion. But then you would not expect anything less from him would you?

46. 34'

Bardsley plays a nice ball into the feet of Graham inside the Newcastle box. The striker does well to turn Yanga-Mbiwa but he fails to get enough power on his shot to really trouble Krul in goal.

Newcastle struggling at the minute. They are finding it hard to keep their rhythm going and that is down to Sunderland doing well at frustrating them.

50. 40'

Larsson picks out the unmarked Cuellar at the far post but he can only direct his header straight at Krul. Top save but the defender should have done better there.

51. 41'

52. 42'

The Newcastle fans really urging their team on for these final few minutes of the first half. They do not want to see the Magpies trailing as they go in for the break.

53. 43'

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/yellow_card.jpg" height="15"> Cisse goes into the book for a very late challenge on Bardsley. There have been a few of those today, and I am sure there will be a few more.

There were three minutes of extra time scheduled, by the way.

61. 45'

There goes the half-time whistle and what a first half it has been. Sunderland lead but Newcastle have had the chances to draw level. The game has been played at a manic pace and is everything you would expect from a derby. Let's hope for more of the same over the next 45 minutes.
