Magnificent first-time strike from the young midfielder and St James' Park explodes into life. Shearer, fuelled by adrenalin, chops O'Shea down and this time gets himself a yellow card

49. 44'

Newcastle still rather shellshocked by that three-goal blast from the men in red. Shearer looks to get them going again, but Brown forces him back...

50. 44'

Here comes Fergie's boys again. O'Shea surges past Solano, before cutting inside Hughes to smash right-footed against the bar. Nevermind - Giggs is there to control instantly and lash the follow-up into the roof of the net. 4-1!

51. 45'

Unbelievable stuff. Head-in-hands time among the Toon Army. Seem to remember their team being one-nil up not long ago...

52. 45'

Into injury-time and Hughes lashes aimlessly from distance. High and wide

53. 45'

And that's it for an astonishing first half. Are you watching, Real Madrid?

54. 46'

Forlan is on for Giggs as Man Utd restart, to an almost deathly St James' silence

55. 47'

Mild amusement for the home fans as Keane slips in delivering a cross. Dyer breaks forward but Viana's control is poor

63. 55'

Solskjaer drops to the right before cutting inside Bernard to hammer at goal again. This time wide though

64. 56'

68. 61'

Viana hammers from range - beaten away by Barthez but Woodgate's follow-up only flashes wide

69. 62'

To the other end where Van Nistelrooy nudges it through for Forlan, but Given is out to collect bravely

70. 63'

Brief cheer for the home fans as Solano's driven cross smashes into the side of Silvestre's head

71. 64'

72. 66'

Bellamy hacks a right-footer well over the bar. Meanwhile two changes for the Magpies as Ameobi and Lua Lua replace Solano and Viana.

73. 67'

...whie Fergie, with his final change, looks for the pace of Blanc to replace Wes Brown

74. 68'

75. 70'

Barthez saves easily from Jenas after good work from subs Ameobi and Lua Lua

76. 71'

Barthez happy to hoof clear as Shearer lurks

77. 71'

92. 89'

Then Dyer seizes on a horrible clearance from the France keeper, finding Ameobi busting into the box to prod in a consolation effort. 6-2

93. 90'

Not much to cheer about, in truth, but that will clip Man Utd's goal difference. Meanwhile, Barthez looks to have injured himself in the process

94. 90'

Full-time! An astonishing 6-2 victory for the visitors, who go three-points clear and will travel to Highbury next week in great heart. Newcastle's brave title challenge is brought to an emphatic end
