1. It's a six-pointer in the race for fourth place. Both teams are desperate for a win.

4. No Owen, Kewell and Baros for Liverpool. An untested strike force of Heskey and Sinama Pongolle will face the Toon, for whom Shearer partners Shola Ameobi up-front.

   Newcastle mount the first attack through Ameobi. He wins a corner.

   Hamman gets that clear. Then Otsemobor hoofs away.

   The youngster again flicks away. But Bramble claims the ball. Bernard on a run before Otsemobor tackles him.

   Good cross in and Shearer rises to head above Heskey. Just over. Nearly a fine opening for the Magpies.

   Dyer is fouled by Murphy. Liverpool sitting back. Only Sinama Pongolle up in attack for them.

    Diouf on a run before Woodgate comes across to stop him. He runs the ball out for a goal-kick.

    Long punt from Riise. Newcastle flail at getting the ball clear. Woodgate and Bramble collide. Murphy runs through and pokes home. 1-0 to Liverpool!

    Bobby Robson bound to be angry over that mistake. Bramble went for a ball that Woodgate had control of.

    Pongolle out to Heskey. Diouf fouled by Woodgate. Liverpool playing neat stuff after that shock goal.

    Diouf pings in a cross before Given claims the ball just under the posts.

    Bramble does well this time to clear. Off go Newcastle before Pongolle wins it back.

    Dyer fouls Riise as they chase a diagonal ball across field.

    Shearer out wide. But Gerrard comes away with the ball. And wins a throw.

    Riise launches a long one. Heskey nods on before Given claims. Robert gets quick ball before Ameobi fouls Hyypia.

    Newcastle gather their thoughts as Liverpool back off them a little.

    Dyer and Speed try to create something. Biscan deflects it back to Kirkland.

    Shearer fouled by Biscan. Robert's free-kick curves away from Kirkland but he claims the ball.

    Given has to clear as Liverpool pressure. They've been much the better side.

    Ameobi loses the ball in a promising position. Otsemobor does well and Liverpool build an attack. That too comes to naught though.

    Pongolle ran out by Hughes as the young Frenchman threatened.

    Robert on the burst. He cuts in but his ball is poor and Kirkland gathers with ease.

    Kirkland has to clear under pressure from Shearer.

    Two handballs from Hyypia. No, says the ref. Away by Riise.

    Ameobi plays in Speed but the Welshman's touch is poor and the chance is gone.

    Two efforts by Jenas are charged down. The Toon faithful rediscover their voice.

    Biscan has to come across to concede a corner. Ball hooked up for Shearer but Kirkland comes out to stop him.

    Otsemobor on the right wing gets in a cross but is hit late. Newcastle break but Dyer slips when Biscan had been beaten.

    Newcastle fighting much harder now. Shearer penalised and he's not happy with referee Graham Poll.

    Riise stops a Hughes overlap. Jenas cuts in to shoot but Kirkland equal to the task.

    Neat turn by Robert beats Otsemobor before he gets in a cross. Late challenge and it's a yellow card.

    Hyypia heads clear from Robert's cross. Jenas puts the ball in the mixer. Kirkland clears.

    Hyypia and Ameobi clash. Newcastle want a free-kick but it's a throw.

    Bramble misses the ball again as Pongolle looked to get away. But Bernard gets it clear.

    Snap effort from Speed slices wide.

    Helter skelter stuff in the middle before Hyypia fouls Dyer. Robert will get in a cross.

    Gerrard fouled out on the left. Murphy will ping one in. Pongolle's flick comes off Woodgate.

    Biscan handles the crossed corner. Newcastle breahte again.

    Ameobi through on goal from a Dyer pass. He should have scored but Kirkland gets down well to deflect it away from his legs. Newcastle's best chance fails.

    Otsemobor goes at Bernard down the right wing. But he runs out of room and it's a goal-kick.

    Liverpool play some tidy keep-ball. They have a vital lead in a vital game. Gerrard creates some space for a shot but misses the target.

    Newcastle struggle to find space in Liverpool's pressing game. Gerrard mops up and clears.

    Robert stops Otsemobor in his tracks. Jenas finds space to run, cuts in, ignores Shearer and shoots. Over and wide.

    Murphy is quick in mopping up some danger after a stray Heskey pass.

    Bramble clears the ball and that's the end of the half. A half divided by Bramble's mistake to let in Murphy to score.

    Half-time replacement for Newcastle. On comes Solano for Aaron Hughes. An attacking change from Sir Bobby.

    Heskey fouled by Dyer. Liverpool hit it long.

    Gerrard averts some Newcastle danger. Riise robs Shearer. Liverpool resolute in defence.

    Solano forces a throw. But again Liverpool clear. Off goes Pongolle. He smashes in a shot which Given parries. Gerrard collects a Pongolle pass and Given makes it a fine double save.

    Liverpool showing their threat on the break. But that'll be Pongolle's last action. Smicer replaces him.

    The Toon force a corner. Kirkland palms clear and then hoofs away on the run. Good keeping.

    Bernard gets in a cross. Hyypia heads away as Shearer lurks. Corner.

    No corner. It seems the great man had the last touch.

    Shearer penalised for a foul on Hyypia. Ref Poll and he will fall out.

    Ameobi gets another chance but he tries to take too many touches when he should have hit it. Gerrard can clear. A waste for Newcastle.

    Ameobi fouled. Robert's free-kick bends. Kirkland beaten but it's still 1-0 to Liverpool. The post was beaten too.

    The crowd are up for this now. Liverpool on the back foot in the midst of it. But Kirkland claims a Robert cross and Liverpool breathe easy.

    Long throw from Riise. Bramble back to clear.

    Dyer on the burst. Lovely through ball on the overlap for Robert. Kirkland makes contact on the Frenchman as he goes into the box. Penalty to Newcastle!

    And Alan Shearer roofs his spot-kick. 1-1. And Newcastle have deserved this equaliser.

    Kirkland annoyed about the penalty. And he was booked for complaining too.

    Neacastle's voices and tails are up. Liverpool have to ride this out now.

    Bernard flicks away a Riise cross. Respite for Liverpool. Otsemobor cuts in to shoot. The ball smashes off Bramble's ample backside. But the ref doesn't see the need for a corner.

    Shearer down the right of the box plays in Jenas. A fresh air effort and Liverpool clear. Hamann brings down Bernard but doesn't believe in the ref's decision.

    The free-kick pings around the box. Liverpool ragged as they get the ball away.

    Newcastle with all the impetus. Until Liverpool's shape forces back the Magpies.

    Amazing pin-ball session in the Liverpool area. Solano and Dyer and then Solano go close in an amazing sequence. Bramble's shot is hacked off the line too. Liverpool ride their luck.

    Ameobi wins the ball and gets in a cross. But Liverpool have plenty back and Kirkland has the ball.

    Long ball from Gerrard. Smicer wins the ball from a dozing Bramble and has a chance to shoot. He attempts a dink but misses the target. Bramble received a let-off.

    Shearer shackled by Hyypia. And then baulked by Riise. But no foul says the linesman.

    Diouf offside from a Heskey lobbed ball. Liverpool need to retain possession.

    Shearer's shot deflects off to Bernard. The Frenchman's shot charged down by Biscan.

    Bernard back in the thick of it. But he's outnumbered in the corner of the area and it's a goal-kick.

    Free-kick chance for Hamann. But instead Gerrard chips a ball into nowheresville. Given only too happy to claim the ball.

    Bernard and Gerrard hustle in the corner but it's a goalkick to Liverpool.

    Smicer fouled by Solano. Another turn for Murphy's free-kick. Headed away. Hamann thrashes a shot at goal. Given down low to make a fine save. Palmed away.

    Dyer gets down the wing and cuts past Riise. Slid in for Shearer. He spanks at goal but Kirkland makes a fine save to palm away.

    Woodgate on the attack from a Dyer ball. Good cross is headed away by Biscan. Corner.

    Hyypia heads away a steepling effort. Newcastle keep up the pressure until Heskey is fouled.

    Bernard stops Diouf. Liverpool gain respite in Newcastle's half.

    Great run by Ameobi as he beats two men. Bernard busting a lung was ignored on the outside. Poor ball sees the move break down.

    Liverpool fans think they've ridden this one out. Plenty of singing from their end.

    Woodgate and Given nearly handed them the game. Given was alert as a header fell short.

    Gerrard gets a Robert corner away. But then the ball is lumped back in. Woodgate again up front. His shot is that of a defender and Liverpool hang on to that point.

    Robert's cross headed away by Hyypia. Murphy on the charge but he loses it. No time for Newcastle though. Graham Poll puts his whistle to his lips and blows.

    Nothing gained but plenty ventured in the battle for the Champions League. Liverpool up to 5th and Newcastle are just a point and a couple of places behind them.
