Newcastle United – Everton

1. Everton travel to St. James' Park today knowing a win will place them second in the table. They will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to six games, a sequence of results that has much to do with the form of Andrew Johnson, who has netted five times in as many games.

2. Newcastle will be hoping for a win to get their stuttering season back on course but will have to do without Damien Duff today as the Irish winger has picked up an injury. Newcastle will be hoping Scott Parker has his goalscoring boots on and will be relying on the partnership of Martins and Ameobi up front.

3. Shay Given lookalike Steve Harper takes over between the sticks for the Glenn Roeder's men.

4. Everton kick the game off in their traditional blue and white attacking to the right.

5. Tim Cahill whips in an free-kick but Newcastle get the ball away and out to safety.

   Osman's ball up towards Johnson drifts harmlessly out for a goal kick.

7. 2'

   Naysmith dispossess Parker and tries to cut the ball inside to Cahill but Newcastle regain possession and go on the offensive. Ameobi gets on the end of a cross and wins a corner.

   From the corner N'Zogbia hits a wild shot from long range which goes well over the Everton bar.

   James Milner now bursts in to the box after a great dinked lay back by N'Zogbia but his shot fails to find the net when it looked like he might blast the opening goal.

    Cahill is being 'spoken to'. Oh look, now he is being 'booked'. For retaliation nonetheless, Emre the recipient of a kick after going in late on the Australian midfielder.

11. 6'

    Harper's clearance is poor and goes straight to Everton. Hibbert then takes a throw-in but Newcastle win the ball back before conceding another throw-in.

    Osman gives away a free-kick after going in late on Craig Moore.

13. 8'

    Newcastle have a throw-in deep in Everton territory. Carr takes it short but Milner and Carr play it too tight and Everton get the ball back.

14. 9'

    Ramage conceds a cheap free-kick and Everton now attack. Arteta wins a throw and Neville launches a long one in to the box towards Cahill but the attentions of Bramble are enough to stop Cahill getting a head to it.

15. 10'

    Ameobi finds himself unmarked in the box when Milner's cross reaches him but he fails to connect with it. A poor effort.

    Now Ramage tries to find Ameobi but his cross is poor and Everton have a goal-kick.

17. 12'

    Ameobi's progress down the left wing is blocked by Yobo and Newcastle have a free-kick.

18. 13'

    GOAL - Everton's defence gambles by rushing out and tries to play offside when the free-kick comes in and Ameobi, who is clearly about three yards offside, taps the ball home from close range. A terrible piece of officialdom and Everton are unjustly punished. David Moyes will doubtless have something to say after the game should his side lose today.

    Everton will be stung by that goal and try to make amends immediately when Cahill hits a rasping effort from twenty yards out. Ambitious but it goes wide.

    David Moyes is discussing something with the fourth official. I wonder what that might be?

    Moore goes in hard on Osman and Everton have a free-kick right on the half-way line.

    The free-kick when it is taken goes straight to the welcoming arms of Steve Harper.

    Parker plays a ball through the middle towards Ameobi but the striker is unable to reach it. He looks to be struggling a little bit and might be carrying an injury.

    Ameobi now wins a fre-kick after Yobo clatters in to the back of him.

    Moore attacks the ball with his head deep in the Everton penalty area but Tim Howard collects it.

    Ameobi comes off to be replaced by Antoine Sibierski.

    Johnson makes a great surging run up the right wing and is brought down by Bramble who is booked for his challenge.

    Bramble follows up this piece of decision making by allowing Lescott a free header at the far post but the ball goes wide.

    At the other end a fine piece of play from Newcastle allows Parker in to the box and his lob is well saved by Tim Howard.

    Everton clear the resulting corner amid Newcastle's protests for a free-kick. They are ignored by the referee.

    Johnson has won a corner for Everton with a fine run in to the box. Arteta plays the ball to Osman but he fails to connect properly with it and Harper collects.

    Nice feet from Parker begins a fine Newcastle attack with N'Zogbia playing a good pass in towards the advancing Sibierski but Everton are able to get the ball out.

    Everton now attack but Newcatsle are able to win the ball back and off goes James Milner down the wing. His shirt is being tugged by Naysmith and a free-kick is given.

    Emre whips it in but Everton break once they win it and counter-attack. Keeping possession well, they probe the Newcastle defence before winning a throw.

    A long one from Phil Neville but now it is Newcastle's turn to counter-attack. They win a throw on the eighteen yard line and Ramage plays the ball in. Eventually the ball breaks to Parker whose shot from eighteen yards is well over the bar.

    Carsley in an advanced position gets on the end of a great ball in from Phil Neville but his header is wide from six yards when he should have hit the target.

    Now Newcastle have a corner which Emre takes. It is wasted though as the ball bends out of play before it can reach a Newcastle player.

    Yobo wins a good header to get the ball back to Tim Howard when Newcastle were on the attack.

    A fine tackle from Ramage on Johnson breaks up a promising Everton move.

    GOLA - Everton have a corner and it breaks to Carsley on the edge of the box. His shot is poor but when the ball is played in again by Phil Neville Cahill rises to hit a trademark header from six yards. Bramble again was at fault and should have been tighter.

    Cahill has clattered in to the back of his fellow Aussie Craig Moore but escapes a second booking.

    Sibierski lays a ball off to Martins in the penalty area but his shot is mis-hit and wide of Tim Howard's goal.

    Martins improvises an opportunity for himself and races on to the ball after going round Carsley but Naysmith makes a great tackle to deny him. The defender is down injured though and Martins stud marks are visible on his pasty Scottish leg.

    Naysmith has limped off and is going to be replaced by Nuno Valente it looks like.

    Martins shot on the edge of the penalty is well blocked by Cahill. Evertons defenders appeared quite ragged for a moment there.

    Parker cuts it back to Martins who is lurking in the six yard box but Everton once more make a last ditch challenge to prevent him getting a shot on goal.

    HALF TIME - a good open game and it is hard to pick between the two sides. Both teams have played some fine football although the linesman will have been scratched off David Moyes Christmas card list following his quite appalling decision to allow Newcastle their goal.

    Newcastle kick off the second half and, in keeping with the games traditions, the two teams have swapped ends.

    Martins shows some nice moves and manages to win a corner from a Lee Carsley challenge.

    From the corner Parker shows excellent skill to bet two Everton defenders before crashing to the ground and loudly pleading for a penalty claiming his shirt was pulled. The referee ignores him but fails to book him for diving.

    Martins feeds Milner who hits in an inviting cross from the right but Tim Howard gets his fingertips to it.

    Bramble miscalculates the bounce of the ball and Johnson pounces on his error before Parker scampers back to tackle him well.

    Newcastle play it along their back-line and you can feel the home crowd's nervousness at this in a game where Titus Bramble is displaying all his customary, manifold qualities.

    At the other end Yobo does well to get back and tackle Sibierski on the edge of the Everton penalty area.

    Emre plays a free-kick deep in to Everton's area but the Merseysiders break with Cahill who then finds Arteta. The Spaniard's pass to Johnson is poor though and the move breaks down.

    Sibierski's header finds MArtins but he is crowded out just inside the Everton penalty area and can't get his shot in.

    Cahill over-hits his pass to Johnson who would have had only Harper to beat. A shame. If you support Everton.

    Parker bursts in to the box again and wins another corner. It is played short and then in to the box and Tim Howard foolishly decides to come to get it. He is nowhere near to the ball but unfortunately for Newcastle neither is any of their team to take advantage.

    A great diagonal run from N'Zogbia ends when he cuts the ball back towards Martins but Everton are able to stop the stiker getting a shot in.

    Everton appeal for a penalty after Bramble first misses an easy header and then manhandles Johnson. The referee does not give it to them and David mMoyes will feel hard done by once more.

    Martins cuts the ball inside to Milner and he sizes up a shot from twenty yards but it goes straight at Tim Howard.

    Osman goes down in the penalty area but wins a corner rather than the penalty he was appealing for. Unless he was appealing for a corner.

    The corner is wastred and Newcastle break. Martins shot is blocked by Hibbert. Then Parker is hacked down by the same player and goes flying over the Everton defender. Hibbert is booked and Newcastle have a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area.

    Parker rises gingerly to his feet and walks off for treatment.

    Milner connects well with the ball and his shot goes through the wall but straight at Tim Howard.

    Martins lingers too long on the ball and allows Carsley to get back and challenge him, conceding a corner in the process.

    Newcastle waste the corner and Tim Howard places the ball for a goal-kick.

    The speedy Cahill's path is obstructed blatantly by Emre and he is quite rightly booked.

    Cahill gets a head to the ball when it coems in but was also pushing in the box the naughty boy and Newcastle are awarded a free-kick.

    Neville does well to get the ball out of defence and Johnson skips round Bramble but the Newcastle player, showing something approaching defensive ability, does well to get back and tackle the Everton striker.

    Cahill attack down the right wing but are forced back. They try through the middle but no joy there either and Newcastle are allowed to break. Martins fends off Yobo before Lescott does enough to put the stiekr off allowing Tim Howard to block the shot with his body.

    Bramble fouls Hibbert with a clumsy challenge and Everton get the free-kick. They knock the ball around but give it away cheaply.

    Cahill is forced down the left wing and manages to win a throw-in. The ball is played in towards Osman but Bramble rounds off a fine day's work by bringing him crashing to the floor, conceding a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area and receiving his second yellow card. Bye-bye Titus. Newcastle's chances of winning this game have just improved.

    Oh dear. Keen to join his close friend Titus in the bath, Tony Hibbert makes a rash challenge, receives a second yellow and takes the long walk back to the dressing room. Ten against ten now.

    That is the tenth sending-off in this fixture since the Premiership began. If you are interested in those sorts of thing.

    Arteta goes round Emre and wins a corner out on the right.

    It is played low towards Johnson but goes behind for another corner.

    Yobo comes up from the back but his effort goes wide.

    Martins is making way for Giuseppe Rossi.

    Moore gives the ball away and Osman pounces on it and charges towards the goal. Harper is on hand to block his shot though and spare Moore's blushes.

    Now Moore misjudges a header but gets a second chance and is able to hoof the ball away. It has not been a day for defenders.

    N'Zogbia's cross is long, i.e rubbish, and he is unable to find Rossi in the box.

    Cahill knock the ball back to Carsley twenty yards from goal but the Irishman's shot is poor and sails well wide of the goal.

    Milner does well to get back and tackle Johnson who was looking like he was about to unelash a shot of such unstoppable venom that had Steve Harper got in the way of it it would surely have ruptured his spleen and sent him flying over St James' Park in to a Bigg Maket pub causing glass and beer to be thrown around the place in flurry of black and white confusion.

    James Milner has just won the man of the match award which, confusingly has not been given to Titus 'justcallmeBaresi' Bramble.

    Good covering header from Neville as Sibierski was looking to get the winning goal from Carr's cross. Lescott then blatantly brings down Rossi and the ref somehow misses what was clearly a foul.

    Osman is booked for bringing down N'Zogbia and now Newcastle have a corner.

    Emre tries to score from the corner. Idiot.

    James Beattie has been give ten seconds to change the outcome of the game.

    He doesn't. One all and a fine performance from both teams, a certain Newcastle defender notwithstanding. Everton will perhaps feel hard done by with just the one point after poor refereeing cost them a goal and a penalty.
