Manchester United – West Bromwich Albion

1. A West Brom win (unlikely, I know) will take them out of the relegation zone. United are hoping to keep the pressure on Arsenal in the race for second place. Exciting stuff. Stay here to find out what happens.

2. 1'

United kick-off. West Brom have a very attacking side out today as they go all-out for what would be a shock victory.

3. 2'

United have rested a couple of their stars, with Van Nistelrooy not even making the bench. The home side have made a positive start.

4. 3'

Ronaldo makes a darting run down the left wing and wins a throw. West Brom are giving the ball away too easily in the early stages.

5. 4'

Gaardsoe stays calm and composed as he nods a header back to Hoult. Earnshaw is making a bit of a nuisance of himself as he hassles the United defenders.

6. 5'

Ronaldo breaks down the left, feeds Kleberson on the edge of the area, but the Brazilian's right-foot shot is weak and straight at Hoult.

7. 6'

Ronaldo clips in a cross but it's inches too high for Smith, who can only glance his header to Giggs. The winger puts the ball back in to the six-yard box but West Brom clear.

8. 7'

Ronaldo is caught by Wallwork as he lays the ball back to Ferdinand. He limps for a little while until someone pays him some attention. He then makes a quick recovery and play goes on.

9. 8'

Giggs' lay-off is poor, but Ronaldo picks up the loose ball, beats a couple of challenges and fires a right-foot shot across Hoult. The keeper is down quickly to save.

10. 9'

West Brom are having real problems keeping hold of the ball in midfield, and it's inviting United pressure.

11. 10'

Smith jumps in to Horsfield as they challenge for a header. Free-kick. The West Brom striking trio have had nothing of the ball as yet.

12. 11'

Smith isn't happy with the referee after a challenge from Greening. He makes his displeasure known with a four-letter rant at the official. Pleasant.

13. 12'

Oooh! Neville sets up Fortune for a shot from 30 yards. The South African strikes it well, but Hoult turns the effort over the bar.

14. 13'

Giggs curls the corner in, but Smith heads wide when unmarked eight yards out. Poor effort from the blonde-haired firecracker.

15. 14'

Gera stabs a nice ball down the right channel, but Horsfield had drifted a couple of yards off-side.

16. 15'

Clement does well to clear after being put under pressure by Smith.

17. 16'

West Brom are getting plenty of players back when United are in possession, but it means when they do finally win the ball back, they have no outlet up-field.

18. 17'

Ronaldo and Giggs seem to be playing in free roles; they're popping up all over the pitch at the moment.

19. 18'

A superb turn from Kleberson sets him free inside the area, but his low cross towards Smith is cut out by Clement.

20. 18'

Excellent play from Ronaldo down the right; he curls in a dangerous cross which Giggs and Gaardsoe contest, the ball being deflected wide for a corner.

21. 19'

Hoult requires some treatment after seemingly pulling a muscle in his groin.

22. 20'

GOAL! Giggs takes a quick free-kick and curls a low shot past Hoult. Quick thinking puts United in front.

23. 21'

SUB: Hoult off, Kuszcak on. Hoult limps off, suffering from a pulled groin muscle.

24. 22'

The injury to Hoult played an important role in the goal; the keeper's attempt to get across his goal-line to save Giggs' shot was lame at best.

25. 23'

West Brom boss Robson was livid after the goal, though it wasn't clear whether he was unhappy at his defenders or the official, for allowing the free-kick to be taken so quickly.

26. 24'

There is a very strong wind this evening in Manchester, and the players are finding it tough to judge the flight of the ball.

27. 25'

Smith is held back by Gaardsoe in midfield. Free-kick, and United build slowly from the back.

28. 26'

Ronaldo takes a short corner, and receives the ball back from Neville. He cuts on to his left foot and fires a cross through the crowd in the area, though no-one can turn it goalwards.

29. 27'

United have completely dominated this match so far; West Brom have offered nothing.

30. 28'

Some dreadful defending allows Giggs space in the area, and his volley needs turning around the post by the substitute goalkeeper.

31. 29'

United are playing with a good amount of confidence, Giggs and Ronaldo especially. They are causing West Brom a lot of problems.

32. 29'

Quick feet from Ronaldo tempts Greening in to a rash challenge. Ronaldo curls the free-kick in, but Smith heads well wide.

33. 30'

O'Shea stabs a great ball over the top for Giggs, who gets to the pass just before the goalkeeper. He rounds him but his shot from a tight angle flies across the mouth of the goal.

34. 31'

Gera finally gets a chance to run at the United defence, but Robinson had ran off-side and the move breaks down.

35. 32'

West Brom have a very strong wind behind them, but they haven't looked remotely like testing Carroll so far.

36. 33'

Oooh! Ronaldo pounces on a knock-down in the area and crashes a volley a yard or so over the bar. Good technique from the yougster, though he just couldn't get over the top of the shot.

37. 34'

West Brom put a little pressure on the home side, loading the penalty area as they swing in a free-kick. Campbell heads across goal, but United clear.

38. 35'

Earnshaw does well to hold the ball up against Ferdinand and Silvestre, but Greening mis-controls his pass and the ball runs out of play.

39. 36'

Oooh! Great pass from Brown frees Ronaldo inside the area. He clips a cross to the back post where Fortune plants a header goalwards, but Kuszczak palms his header around the post.

40. 37'

West Brom's Polish goalkeeper is then called in to action again, diving to tip Ronaldo's shot around the post.

41. 38'

Fortune gets in the way of Smith as the striker was about to shoot from the edge of the area. United are in complete control.

42. 39'

Oooh! Another good save from Kusczcak as he gets in the way of a close-range volley.

43. 40'

Good play from O'Shea down the left wins United yet another corner, though West Brom eventually clear.

44. 41'

The ball needs to be changed after a strong tackle seems to burst a seam. Bryan Robson looks very glum on the sidelines.

45. 41'

A long clearance is flicked on by Horsfield, but Ferdinand is in the right place to collect. The United back-line haven't been tested at all so far.

46. 42'

I don't think it's harsh to say that West Brom have been absolutely dreadful today. Kleberson cracks a 35-yard shot 35 yards wide.

47. 43'

Silvestre sweeps a sensational pass out towards Brown out on the right wing, where Robinson does well to put the ball out for a corner.

48. 44'

The ball is lofted to Ferdinand, unmarked, eight yards out, but the defender completely mis-kicks his volley and the ball dribbles wide.

49. 45'

The United fans taunt their expensive centre-back with "One-hundred grand, you're having a laugh...," in reference to Ferdinand's alledged contract demands.

50. 46'

Oooh! Giggs beats a man on the left and sends over a cross in to the middle, but Smith plants his header straight at the keeper.

51. 46'

HALF-TIME: One-way traffic. West Brom have been awful.

52. 45'

No changes at half-time, and West Brom get us back underway.

53. 46'

The wind is still causing players problems; Horsfield loses the flight of a long ball over the top, allowing O'Shea to clear.

54. 47'

Smith is booked for sliding in and catching Gaardsoe with a stray boot. He isn't happy withe the decision.

55. 48'

Earnshaw holds off a challenge on the edge of the area before smashing a wild left-foot shot high over the crossbar.

56. 48'

Oooh! A superb turn from Giggs on the halfway line sets him free. He cuts the ball back to Kleberson, but Kusczcak saves his side-footed shot.

57. 49'

Earnshaw pressurises Brown and wins the ball back for West Brom. Greening sends a cross in to the middle, but Carroll claims easily.

58. 50'

Oooh! O'Shea's header back to Carroll is short, and Campbell almost steals in to nod past the keeper. Carroll was alert though, and punches clear.

59. 51'

Carroll seemed to injure his shoulder in making that crucial save from Campbell.

60. 51'

West Brom are certainly playing better now than they did in the first period. They are keeping the ball and getting players forward to support their front men.

61. 52'

Oooh! Kleberson prods over the bar from six yards out after being found by a cut-back from Fortune. He should have scored; a woeful effort, in truth.

62. 53'

Kleberson then gives the ball away in midfield with a dreadful pass. A minute or two to forget from the Brazilian mis-fit.

63. 54'

Fortune and O'Shea combine down the right, but Smith and Kleberson then get in each other's way as they try to get a shot off.

64. 55'

Oooh! Gera intercepts a poor pass in midfield. He runs at goal, but his shot from the edge of the penalty area is high and wide and dreadful.

65. 56'

Ferdinand cuts out Robinson's cross from the left. The West Brom man had three players to aim for but his cross was poor.

66. 57'

Albrechtsen beats Giggs on the right, but his low cross is cut out by Brown. At least West Brom are occasionally testing United in this second half.

67. 57'

Giggs is a little mystified when the off-side flag is raised as he chases down a through-ball; replays show that he was indeed on-side, but Ronaldo was four yards off-side in the middle.

68. 59'

Oooh! Neville clips a good ball over the top, Ronaldo sprints on to it, controls well inside the area, but prods his shot narrowly wide of the post as the goalkeeper came flying out.

69. 60'

PENALTY! Horsfield is bundled over by O'Shea inside the area as they chased down a Campbell pass.

70. 61'

GOAL! Earnshaw calmly slots the penalty down the middle as Carroll dives to his left.

71. 62'

A long, dramatic celebration from the young Welsh striker. It's their first shot on goal all game.

72. 62'

United deserve to be about ten goals ahead at the moment, but they haven't taken their chances. That could be a crucial goal for the relegation-threatened visitors.

73. 63'

I suspect we'll see Rooney brought on if the score stays like this for much longer. West Brom will be tempted to sit back and try to hold on, but that could be very dangerous.

74. 64'

United were furious with the decision to award the penalty, but O'Shea was all over Horsfield.

75. 65'

SUB: Kanu on, Horsfield off. As a former Arsenal player, Kanu is booed by the United fans as he comes on.

76. 66'

SUB: Saha, Rooney and Scholes on for United, Neville, Smith, Kleberson off. A triple change from Ferguson, obviously unhappy.

77. 67'

Brown breaks at pace down the right but he loses control of the ball and fouls Greening trying to win it back.

78. 68'

There is a real spring in the West Brom players' step at the moment. Gera fires a ball down the channel for Earnshaw, but Silvestre cuts it out.

79. 69'

Oooh! Scholes cracks a low shot from 25 yards out, Ronaldo deflects it wide of the post. He was flagged off-side anyway.

80. 69'

Robson looks very nervous, Ferguson seems to be spitting feathers.

81. 70'

Rooney slides a nice ball through to Ronaldo, but Clement defends well as the winger cuts in to the area. Corner, but Kuszczak claims it well under pressure.

82. 71'

Scholes plays a nice one-two with Ronaldo, though his attempted chip from the edge of the area is over-hit and doesn't trouble the goalkeeper.

83. 72'

A Gera cross causes trouble as the wind again affects the flight of the ball, though Brown recovers to hoof clear.

84. 73'

West Brom are trying to become the only team in the history of the Premiership to survive the drop despite being bottom of the table at Christmas.

85. 74'

Oooh! Scholes picks out the run of Saha, who fires a low cross towards Rooney. The young striker attempts an audacious flick but the keeper saves on his line.

86. 75'

Kanu gives the ball away in the middle of the field, and Rooney attempts a shot from the half-way line. It's a good effort, but the keeper saves easily.

87. 76'

Albrechtsen holds off Brown as they chase a lofted pass from Greening, but his low cross is weak and straight at Silvestre.

88. 77'

Scholes latches on to a loose Campbell lay-off and fires a ball through the middle. Saha attempts a first-time flick for Rooney, but Clement intercepts.

89. 78'

Both teams are going all-out for the victory here, and it's making for entertaining viewing.

90. 79'

Giggs is very unhappy with Kanu as the big striker throws himself to the ground inside the penalty area.

91. 80'

Ronaldo ends up upside down over the edge of the advertising boards as he attempts to get on the end of Rooney's cross.

92. 81'

Gera picks up the ball after good play from Earnshaw on the halfway line, but his pass towards Campbell is very, very poor.

93. 82'

Oooh! Kuszczak makes a full-length save from a Rooney shot from the edge of the penalty area. The Pole has made three or four good saves since coming on.

94. 83'

SUB: Inamoto on, Gera off. Gera has been off-form this evening, but he doesn't look too happy at being dragged off.

95. 84'

West Brom are still having trouble keeping possession; they are giving the ball away too easily, inviting United pressure.

96. 85'

The crowd seem very tense, and the players look edgy too. This is a very important five minutes for both sides. United are the team applying the pressure at the moment.

97. 86'

Greening gives away a free-kick for a foul on Ronaldo. Giggs stands over the ball, right-of-centre, 35 yards out.

98. 86'

Saha flicks on, Rooney breaks through the middle, but Clement sticks out a boot and puts the ball out for a corner.

100. 87'

Clement barges Saha and gives away another free-kick in a dangerous area. Rooney stands over the ball.

102. 88'

Oooh! Rooney fires in a superb effort, curling towards the top corner, but the keeper flies across his goal to palm over the bar. Great save.

103. 89'

Desperate defending from Inamoto on the edge of the area. He then fires a long, straight ball over the top for Earnshaw, but the little striker is out-muscled by Ferdinand.

104. 90'

Ronaldo sends over a testing cross from the right, but West Brom head clear. United collect the loose ball and keep the pressure on the visitors.

105. 91'

Free-kick to United near the corner flag. Giggs sends the ball in to the middle, but four United players at the back post can't head goalwards.

106. 92'

This is real backs-to-the-wall defending from West Brom, but they're doing their job superbly.

107. 93'

Rooney fouls the goalkeeper as they jump for a high ball. Surely the last meaningful action.

108. 93'

FULL-TIME: Great point for West Brom. They were out-played all game, but a good defensive performance saw them home.
