A sun-bathed, if chilly, Old Trafford greets these twin giants of the English game. United in red and white, with the Gunners in their change strip of all blue

United, with Barthez returning, close to full-strength, although Veron is out with a toe injury. Arsenal rest Henry (bench), Bergkamp and Gilberto (both out altogether), with Tuesday's big Champions League clash with Ajax in mind

Referee Jeff Winter blows - and United kick off

Lauren wins an early freekick, Arsenal play it about - before Scholes crunches into Vieira.

Offside against Jeffers as the Gunners attack down the left

Van Nistelrooy chips for Solskjaer in the box. Campbell crashes into the Norwegian, but then Scholes and Vieira clash again - prompting a touchline melee which ref Winter quickly brings to a halt. Yellow card for Scholes

Then more aggro as Van Nistelrooy hammers into his old pal Keown - another gathering of angry players and it's the Dutchman going into the book

A feisty opening to say the least... Van Nistelrooy's foot was raised dangerously there. Winter calls in both skiper's in an effort to cool things down

Now Van Nistelrooy crashes into Lauren, who is left pole-axed as United attack. Winter waves play-on before it breaks down

Arsenal furious - and Vieira goes into the book after a prolonged verbal blast at the referee. Still waiting for the football to start...

Not much sign of it though as Pires, looking for Parlour on the right, slices the ball wildly out of play

But better work from the Gunners puts Pires in space in the box. He fluffs a back-heel to Cole, but the fullback can force Neville into conceding a corner. Punched clear by Barthez

Now Van Nistelrooy and Beckham combine. The England skipper looks for space to shoot, but Cole cuts in to close him down. Arsenal break down the right where Parlour and Keane go in full-throttle. Freekick to United

... who break at speed. Van Nistelrooy finds Solskjaer on the left of the box to hammer a fierce low righ-footer against the post. Seaman beaten, but relieved to get a goalkick

Absolutely breathless stuff - but that was the first real bit of football. Now Silvestre sweeps in a cross from the left, but Parlour and Keown can tidy up

Ferdinand - not for the first time this week - gets caught trying to play it out from the back. Lauren seizes on his loose play, but his left foot is weak and Barthez scoops up a tame effort

Edu looks to break poast keane but Brown cuts across to bring him down. Arsenal freekick 25 yards out

Edu takes - off Scholes to loop over for a corner

Pires takes. Beckham concedes another at the near post, before palms another away to the far side. Corner again...

Beckham again gets a first touch to concede a fourth - but Barthez collects this time.

United break swiftly down the left - Van Nistelrooy can't quite get to the cross from close range, but United press again and the Dutchman wins a freekick

Beckham sends in a curler, which Seaman half clears, but Arsenal can force a throw wide out

Wiltord gets behind Silvestre on the Arsenal right and Keane has to clear the cross. Arsenal corner, but Pires' delivery is poor. United hoof clear

Arsenal build again through Edu, but Pires is loose with a back-heel this time. Still frenetic stuff

Scholes brngs down Vieira in shooting range. Edu hits low and Barthez has to save awkwardly with his feet

Brown, after a bit of a muddle with Ferdinand, does well to clear under pressure from Jeffers and Vieira

Beckham lofts one for Van Nistelrooy in the box. It drops loose for Solskjaer but his first-timer is uncharacteristically mis-hit

Arsenal break at pace - Lauren's cross is flicked away by Ferdinand. Up to the other end where the back-pedalling Keown gets a toe in to deny Van Nistelrooy a shooting chance inside the box

Van Nistelrooy feeds Beckham wide out, but Seaman gathers the cross easily - to close to the England veteran

Keane doesn't spot Jeffers and loses possession. Pires takes it on but the Irishman has to chop him down in the centre circle. It's the fourth yellow card - United's third - of the half

100 mile-an-hour stuff as Solskjaer loses control before Beckham crashes into Parlour and Keane does the same to Vieira...

Then Keown gets it horribly wrong with a ball over the top. Giggs is onto it, skipping around Seaman and Campbell but - amazingly - blazing his shot over the bar from 18 yards. An empty net!

Extraordinary miss. Hands-in-head time for the Welshman, who was let down badly by his weaker right foot

Keane furious as ref Winter rules a foul on Vieira. 23 yards out

Vieira up after some treatment. Edu takes the freekick left footed - deflected off the wall and past the despairing Barthez into the net. 1-0 Arsenal!

No way that was going into the net before it cannoned off either Scholes or Beckham in the wall. Barthez had no chance

'We shall not be moved,' cry the 9,000 visiting Gooners, who have more reason to cheer as Beckham fluffs a shot wide

Arsenal pressing like dervishes, forcing United into some uncomfortable and hurried passing -just to get the ball away from their own third

Poor hit from Neville from deep - Campbell heads clear. United push forward again but this time Seaman boots it away from danger

Silvestre looks for Solskjaer on the inside-left but Parlour is there to intercept

Beckham's smart header gives Neville space to cross from wide out, but Campbell is up again to head away

The Gunners happy to play it around - that freakish goal has changed the whole aspect of this game. Now Jeffers threatens but has to bring down Brown in order to break clear. Freekick United

Giggs - wide on the right now - tries to slip the ball past Edu but the Brazilian is alive to it, bringing the ball out of play before drawing a freekick in-field

Neville hits long for Silvestre on the left flank - but the Frenchman is outnumbered. Arsenal counter but, similarly, Wiltord has no support and eventually has to drop the ball back to Cole after being jockeyed away from the box by Brown and Ferdinand

Half-time whistle goes. A hectic and absorbing - if not the highest quality - 45 minutes of football. And a crazy two minutes, including Giggs' horror miss and Edu's deflected freekick, gives Arsenal the upper-hand. 1-0 at the break

No changes for either side as Arsenal, defending that one-goal lead, restart the game at Old Trafford

Keown has time to play it back to Seaman with Van Nistelrooy fast approaching

Arsenal play it around midfield but then surrender possession. Edu brings down Van Nistelrooy as United break

Beckham's floated freekick is headed clear

Giggs cuts inside from the left. He can't find Solkjaer but recovers well to tackle Vieira. Then Campbell slices badly. Corner to United

Edu gets up to head clear from Beckham's delivery

Parlour and Beckham collide in the Arsenal box. The home fans want a penalty, but referee Winter is not convinced

Parlour finds Vieira overlapping on the right. The Frenchman's cross loops up off a United boot and Barthez collects at the second attempt

Edu cuts in from the left to slip a perfect pass through for Wiltord, who skips past Brown before sliding the ball right-footed past Barthez. 2-0 Arsenal!

Great movement across the box from Wiltord to take Ferdinand and the Brown out of it. United with a mountain to climb

Old Trafford shellshocked - and Silvestre looks shaken too as he sloppily allows the ball to run out of play

Barthez slices a clearance badly, but Silvestre recovers his composure to clear under pressure from Wiltord

The Gunners in total control - United haven't created anything yet in this half and are really struggling to win ball in midfield.

Solskjaer looks for daylight in the box but three blue shirts close in and any chance of a shot quickly vanishes

Scholes comes crashing to the floor after Giggs' lay-off at the edge of the box. Nothing given though, but now Edu drags Beckham down 35 yards out on the right

Beckham sends in a curler, but it eludes all his team-mates and runs out of play on the far side

Cole slides in with a perfectly-timed challenge to stop Beckham in his tracks

United build from the throw. Van Nistelrooy appeals for a penalty against Keown as he falls in twisting to shoot. Play goes on before Giggs mis-hits Beckham's cross

It's out for a throw and Arsenal then win a freekick as Pires goes down under Beckham's challenge. Gary Neville unimpressed with some of Keown's antics and the game is simmering again

Cole intercepts to deny Beckham, but the England captain hares back to retrieve the situation

Lovely exchange between Wiltord and Vieira, who eventually gets forced wide by Brown's interventention

United finally string together a passing movement, Beckham finding Silvestre to cross. Van Nistelrooy goes up but Keown is first to it. The ball drops to Solskjaer but Neville gets it horribly wrong on the overlap. More Gooner glee

This game more-and-more resembling Arsenal's championship-cliching victory at Old Trafford last season. United all huff and puff - and the Gunners are composed and producing the better football

Finally United carve something open. After Keown half clears from Silvestre's cross, Keane dinks the ball across the box. Solskjaer stoops at the far post but plants his header straight into the side-netting

Now Scholes bursts through midfield - striking right-footed from 25 yards, but always drifting wide off the outside of his boot

Now Giggs' day is complete as Forlan takes the field in his place. Henry warming up meanwhile

Forlan's first ball is hit straight at Wiltord. Arsenal break before the ball goes out of play on the right. Here comes Henry to replace the industrious Jeffers - that's all United need

Campbell gets across strongly to shield the ball from Keane - out for an Arsenal goalkick

Silvestre overhits as Forlan chases the long pass down the left. More cheers from the visiting fans as the ball runs out of play

Forlan almost finds Van Nistelrooy with a sweeping ball from centre field, but the Dutchman can't control it on the run and Pires gets back to tidy up

Beckham goes down in some pain after stretching in a challenge with Cole

The England skipper limps off, looking concerned about his right ankle. United down to ten men for the moment, but Van Nistelrooy wins a freekick to the left of the Arsenal box meanwhile

Forlan hits but it's straight at an Arsenal head. The Gunners break through Parlour and Wiltord is clean through into the box. It looks like the third but Brown is back brilliantly with a sliding challenge. Wiltord wants a penalty - but none going

Nicky Butt awaiting his chance to replace Beckham as Seaman comes off his line to gather a bouncing ball

Beckham is replaced as Van Bronckhorst comes on for Pires

Neville launches a high ball into the mixer, but Edu is there to poke clear after Keane's header back

Barthez is out sharply to collect at Henry's feet

Scholes, already booked, chops down Lauren. The England man is unimpressed and kicks the ball straight at Lauren, who remains writhing on the deck - but mercifully no second yellow card from ref Winter

Keown falls into the advertising boards after yet another tussle with Van Nistelrooy - those two won't let it lie

Silvestre fires in a shot from the left. It rebounds to Keane, but yet again, the blue shirts are there in force to block any further progress. Three minutes to be added

Butt blazes high and wide after Cole's half-clearance from a Silvestre cross

Seats emptying rapidly as the clock ticks down on United's FA Cup campaign - the holders are home and dry now

Poor touch from Silvestre allows Keown to step in with a crunching tackle. Scholes' head drops as Arsenal break away for Wiltord to hold it up in the corner

And that's Wiltord's last contribution - another goal at Old Trafford for the Frenchman, who is replaced by Kolo Toure

Full-time! Arsenal are through comfortably - they rode their luck with Giggs' miss and Edu's deflected goal, but the result never looked in doubt after Wiltord's killer second. 2-0 to the Gunners
