Leeds United – Tottenham Hotspur

Juyst like the old days at Elland Road: a full house and a big noise. Marching On Together blasts out of the tannoy - but want-away Leeds striker Luciano Becchio is not part of the occasion.

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has made five changes to his side, bringing back 'keeper Brad Friedel, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Tom Huddlestone, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen.

Spurs kick off, but Leeds skipper Michael Brown is quickly into his stride, harrying and hustling.

Leeds come forward down their left, and Luke Varney is in a crossing position. His effort is blocked and it's an early Leeds corner.

Spurs clear, and then Assou-Ekotto takes the ball off Diouf as he tries to spark danger again.

The teams in full, then. First Leeds: Ashdown, Byram, Lees, Peltier, White, Green, Austin, Brown, Varney, Diouf, McCormack. Subs: Kenny, Pearce, Tonge, Norris, Somma, Hall, Dawson.

And now Spurs: Friedel, Naughton, Caulker, Vertonghen, Assou-Ekotto, Huddlestone, Lennon, Parker, Sigurdsson, Bale, Dempsey. Subs: Gomes, Dembele, Dawson, Walker, Livermore, Townsend, Obika.

Spurs have a throw inside the Leeds half, but McCormack is there for Leeds and goes long looking for Byram. He can't find him, though.

Decent start from Leeds, on a very decent pitch at Elland Road.

Long downfield from Friedel. Again, a Leeds head is first to the ball.

White takes a throw for Leeds inside his own half, and Spurs win that back. Bale gets into the area...

...and Peltier puts the ball behind for a corner, which is played deep and cleared.

Then a great cross from Vertonghen, a flick header from Sigurdsson and Ashdown gathers. That was good quality by Spurs.

Spurs free Dempsey on the right of the area, but he pulls a neither one thing nor the other type of effort miles wide.

Friedel wanders out of his area with the ball, looking like a man enjoying a short stroll in the sunshine. He then whacks it downfield towards Dempsey.

A foul by Austin on Parker gives Spurs a free-kick which Assou-Ekotto will cross...

...Leeds clear, but Parker feeds Bale and the home side are forced to scramble his cross away.

Corner to Spurs, which Huddlestone will take. The visitors are monopolising the ball just at the moment.

The ball finds Dempsey totally unmarked, but he can only steer his header over the top.

It's all rather quiet inside Elland Road as Naughton takes a throw for Spurs. Sigurdsson can't get on the end of that one, though, and Leeds have a goal-kick.

Byram tries to wake the crowd up by putting a cross in, but Friedel plucks it smartly out of the air.

Varney has found space for Leeds - he's bearing down on goal on the left of the area after a ball over the top...

Spurs try to hit back with Lennon. They had been having so much possession before the goal, but were undone by a failure to defend what was no more than a hopeful punt forward.

And that has woken the crowd up - a quick burst of Marching On Together rings out as Ashdown takes a long free-kick and Leeds win an attacking throw from it.

White takes it, and Leeds promptly win another one.

Lennon tries to get Spurs moving, but Peltier - not standing on any ceremony at all - steams in to win it.

A deep Naughton cross looks for Sigurdsson, but the ball is too high for him to be able to direct his header on target.

Assou-Ekotto is found in space on the edge of the area, but can only balloon his effort high and wide.

Another half-chance for Leeds: Diouf gets a cross in and the ball is worked to Varney on the edge of the box, whose first-time effort flies over.

The ball's with Tottenham on half way: they patiently play it around, waiting for an opening.

But there is none to be found on this occasion - Leeds defend well.

Again, a lull in the volume at Elland Road. Spurs are enjoying a clear majority of the possession, with Leeds happy to try and do things on the break - as they managed to great effect through Varney.

Spurs have yet to translate their territorial superiority into anything more tangible. Bale can't keep a ball forward in and Leeds will go long with another goal-kick.

A roar greets good harrying from the Leeds midfield - but then Lennon finds Dempsey, whose effort is saved well by Ashdown.

Free-kick Leeds after a Diouf-Parker tangle inside the Tottenham half...

...Diouf takes it towards Lees, whose header was never going to trouble Friedel, sailing over his crossbar.

Huddlestone clips the ball towards ex-Leeds man Lennon on the left, but Green snuffs out the danger.

Coming up to the half-hour mark and still Spurs are playing it patient, probing and waiting for a chance. Leeds haven't been as blood and thunder as you might have expected. Here comes Bale...

...he skips away from Peltier but tries to beat Ashdown with a low shot from a tight angle, and the 'keeper blocks.

He might have been better off looking for a colleague's run there - a good chance gone begging for Spurs.

Scrappy and bitty in midfield, and then the referee says free-kick Spurs. It's safe to say the home fans weren't in agreement with that one.

Lennon works his way into a crossing position - but Ashdown, whose handling has been rock-solid, holds on well again.

Bale chases a ball down the right, and barges over Leeds' White. Free-kick, says the referee. Bale looks incredulous.

Spurs are still completely in control of possession... and they're still 1-0 down.

They have ten minutes in which to conjure an equaliser before the break.

Bale tries to do that, and gets into another race with White. Deja vu as he barges into him and concedes a free-kick.

Spurs on the ball once more. Good pressure from Varney means they end up having to play it all the way back to Friedel.

A long ball from Leeds finds McCormack, who prods an effort wide. The player, and his shy, retiring manager Neil Warnock, both seemed to feel there was an infringement by a Spurs defender there. The referee, however, doesn't.

Dempsey turns on the edge of the area and makes himself a shooting chance. Ashdown pushes it away before the ball is ushered safely back to him by a defender.

Nearly a lovely link-up between Varney and Diouf, but the former's backheel inside the area just eludes the latter.

Austin hoists the ball forward for Leeds. Diouf will keep on chasing, but he can't make anything of that one.

Leeds throw, inside the Tottenham half. They again compete well in midfield, and Brown wins them a free-kick on halfway.

Peltier plays it forward, McCormack is beaten to the ball in the air inside the area and the Leeds crowd want a foul and a penalty. They're not getting either.

Sigurdsson is down after a midfield challenge, and looks in some pain. Looks like a potential ankle/heel problem.

The physio has a quick look, and it seems the midfielder will be fine.

Ashdown plays another long ball - Varney flicks and McCormack is in but can't steer it past Friedel. Good stop by the Spurs man - that could have been 2-0.

A couple of minutes of stoppage time at the end of this half, and we're into that added time now.

Spurs in control in terms of territory, but Leeds in charge in the only way that matters - they have the game's only goal so far.

Good running by McCormack, who covers an awful lot of ground to make something of a long ball forward. It's a Leeds throw, and possibly the last action of the half.

Bale comes forward to cross, and Byram clears.

We're under way in the second half - Leeds make an early raid with Byram, and win themselves an early corner.

There's a scramble inside the area, and Spurs eventually hack it away with very little ceremony.

Then Varney breaks into the area and takes a tumble under a challenge - no penalty, says the referee.

Assou-Ekotto just lumps the ball into the air. And when Spurs win it back, Vertonghen has to look lively to stop Diouf getting in.

Warnock ushers his team forward, and Diouf tries to oblige, twisting and turning on the right but seeing his attempted cross charged down.

Bale and Sigurdsson lead a charge forward: the latter attempts to cross. Leeds defend well and play it long to McCormack...

An absolute cracker of a goal from McCormack, and Spurs have a big problem on their hands now.

AVB looks concerned in the away dugout. How can he, and Tottenham, change things?

Plenty of noise from the home fans. Parker finds Lennon, and the flag is up. Cue another cheer.

Lennon again - he gets down the right, and the stretching Dempsey is only able to steer his cross wide. Best chance of the game for Tottenham.

Michael Brown plays the ball forward for Leeds, but this time Spurs deal with it. The home side are much the better team in this half.

Spurs will need to up their tempo to find a way back into this game, and it looks as though a substitution or two could be about to be made.

Bale gets down the right and can cross here...

Brown deals with it well but, with half an hour to play, Spurs have been given an injection of confidence by that Dempsey strike.

A Tottenham throw, deep inside their own half. Brown clashes with Parker, and it's a free-kick to the visitors.

Good footwork by Lennon on the right, but then he scuffs his shot and all that build-up counts for nought.

Another throw for Spurs, deep inside the Leeds half. Peltier rises high to get it away.

Well played by Varney, who chases down a hopeful ball, flicked on by McCormack, before Spurs hack it clear.

Bale goes on a run and attempts to thread a ball through to Clint Dempsey. It's too far in front of him, and Ashdown gathers safely.

Leeds free-kick, midway inside Tottenham territory. This will go into the area...

...and it'll come straight back out again, but Leeds come again with McCormack, who gets a cross in. Spurs scramble it away.

Leeds deserve plenty of credit for the way they have responded to the Tottenham goal - now it's Diouf on the attack, and then Green, but their crosses are cleared.

Twenty minutes remaining for Spurs to find the equaliser that would keep them in the competition.

Great skill by Bale down the left leaves two defenders in his wake. Dembele picks up the pieces from his cross, but his shot is deflected wide for a corner.

Walker plays it in dangerously, but Leeds stand firm again.

Suddenly McCormack is in again, in the same way as he was for the second Leeds goal. He bears down on Friedel, and the keeper does well to deflect the effort away.

That could have sealed a win for Leeds, who are soon under pressure at the other end, where Lees does well to deflect a Dempsey effort away for a corner.

As it comes in, Dembele fouls Brown and the home side have a free-kick.

McCormack and Varney link up again for Leeds, but Spurs get the ball clear. We're heading towards the last 15 minutes of what has been a pretty decent game at Elland Road.

Dempsey fires in a shot that hits Byram. He wants a handball decision and a penalty for that, but doesn't get them.

Parker tries to feed Obika inside the area, and Lees plays his clearance off the Tottenham man and behind for a Leeds goal-kick.

It's still a bit tasty in midfield, and Brown gives away another free-kick. Assou-Ekotto plays it in, and a firm header clear buys Leeds some time.

Dembele gives it away to McCormack, who tangles with Vertonghen.

Lennon runs at Leeds. He's crowded out and Varney, back helping out, is happy just to hack that one into the crowd.

As Spurs' need to get forward becomes more pressing, Leeds can break - and they're trying to do that here with the hard-working McCormack...

Byram does well to win the ball back after Leeds had lost it again. Eight minutes and counting at Elland Road.

Parker wins the ball and has a blast at goal from the edge of the area. Peltier, who has had a good game today, is the man in the way for Leeds.

Bale overruns the ball down the right and it's played to Diouf. He draws a challenge from Parker. It's a rash one, and Leeds have a free-kick in midfield.

You have to say that a Spurs equaliser isn't looking massively likely here - although, given the quality they have at their disposal, you never know...

What is certain is that they're running out of time in which to find one and, as Leeds win a corner, they're in completely the wrong place.

But they can move forward now - Obika gets a free-kick after a Green foul. Bale plays a deep cross in, and Ashdown is in the right place to claim that one.

Dempsey attempts to feed the ball through into the area, but feeds it only to Ashdown, who gathers gratefully.

Byram makes a fine challenge on Bale. Throw to Spurs. Long from Bale, and Byram is again there to clear for Leeds.
