Leeds United – Manchester United

Join us at 1945 BST to see if Leeds can upset Manchester United like last year. Although this time it would be in the Carling Cup.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/images/2010/0103/leedsbeckfordgoal20100103_275x155.jpg">Jermaine Beckford celebrates the winner at Old Trafford in 2010.

Manchester United have had some good news over <a href="http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/959260/man-united-relief-over-javier-hernandez-injury?cc=5739" target="_blank">Javier Hernandez's injury</a> and he'll return to training this week.

Some early team news suggests that 18-year-old Zeki Fryers is starting for United in defence.

It's actually an interesting lineup for United. Only one defender in the team: Carrick at CB, Valencia at RB and Fabio at LB.

Young Zeki comes in and there's an odd four-strong striking lineup of Berbatov, Owen, Macheda and Diouf up front.

Giggs and Park (?) it seems, are to be the two central midfielders, which begs the question why Paul Pogba has not been given a chance.

Feel free to comment via my Twitter account <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/joncarterESPN" target="_blank">@joncarterespn</a>. But it looks a real gamble from Fergie.

United's subs: D'Gea, Welbeck, Brown, Keane, Thorpe, Pogba, Cole.

For the record... Leeds United: Lonergan, Lees, Bromby, O'Dea, White, Snodgrass, Howson, Clayton, McCormack, Keogh, Becchio. Subs: Rachubka, O'Brien, Vayrynen, Brown, Forssell, Nunez, Tayor.

Leeds have stuck largely to the side that defeated Bristol City at the weekend, Leigh Bromby replacing the suspended Patrick Kisnorbo and Ramon Nunez losing his place to Luciano Becchio.

The teams are coming out onto the pitch... this is going to be a very odd game I feel.

<i>ESPNsoccernet reader Joshua says: ''I've learned to never question Sir Alex but I can't help but scratch my head at the line up today...''</i>

It is a very odd one... Leeds will certainly fancy their chances. One to watch you ask? Robert Snodgrass for me...

<b>KICK-OFF</b>. The noise is pretty big at Leeds.. here we go.

United in control early doors, but Fabio and Macheda get their wires crossed.

Looks like United are lining up as predicted. Carrick at CB and Giggs/Park combo in the middle.

Becchio has a pop, but it's a long way off and United attack again.

The booes are ringing around the ground, it's a very volatile atmosphere tonight.

Park dictating the play in the middle at the moment and has been very busy. Leeds are being pushed back and have had little of the ball.

Snodgrass gets free down the right, but his cross is blocked well by Fryers.

The corner comes in and Berbatov clears it away from under his own bar after a header from O'Dea. Another shot blocked! That was close.

First real chance of the game and Leeds were almost through.

Macheda causing problems and Giggs swings a ball in. It goes beyond the defence and United continue to pressure.

Leeds really have not picked up possession at all. Everytime they get it, it's a long ball up the other end.

Berbatov is drifting around and linking play up well. It really does look like a 4-2-4 at the moment with Macheda left and Diouf right.

Owen controls on the edge of the box, but that was good tackle back by Clayton although he might have been lucky not to concede a foul.

First bit of possession for Leeds, but that is such a waste. Not even a test of the young lad Fryers.

Becchio goes down in the box after a little tussle with Fabio and the crowd goes mad. But nothing given.

Leeds fans really are up for this game. Their players have yet to show that they are...

McCormack is racing around and trying to get on the end of a clever ball, but he doesn't manage to and Leeds have only fashioned one chance so far.

Diouf and Keogh clash and it's a foul out wide.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/goal.gif"> <b>GOAL</b> Owen. A scuffed finish, but what a move from United.

Park with a brilliant one-two with Berbatov and he finds himself space to slot across to Owen. He slips the ball through the defender's legs. 1-0.

United pushing on again and Diouf tries to get in on the cross. Cleared.

That really was an excellent flowing move from United. They've looked vert comfortable on the ball and Leeds have offered little by way of resistence.

Owen is dropping deep and trying to link with the three other forwards on the pitch. It wasn't his cleanest hit, but a goal is a goal.

Giggs wants to know why that is a foul, but he gets little explanation. The ball flies over Becchio's head anyway.

Simon Grayson looks a frustrated figure on the touchline. Leeds' manager needs to change something to get a foothold in the game.

Bit more passion from Leeds and a good run and shot from Clayton. It's easily gathered by Amos though.

Becchio charges down the left. Leeds looking more composed on the ball and trying to get a move together. They are keeping United off their game for a moment.

Pushing forward, Leeds are left a little short at the back. Berbatov's ease has meant that chance of a swift break has gone though.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/yellow_card.jpg" height="15"> Fabio goes in the book for a late tackle. He knows he overdid that one on Bromby.

A good chance for Leeds to run at Fabio now, as Snodgrass is on that side. But they need the ball first.

A distinct lack of chances since the goal. There's really been little to talk of as neither side have created much in the final third.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/yellow_card.jpg" height="15"> Diouf now follows Fabio as he hacks his man down from behind.

Poor, poor tackle and United now have two players on thin ice. The header from O'Dea comes in but causes little problem as it lands in the box.

Owen tries a little trick, but loses the ball and Leeds break. Snodgrass takes it, cuts inside and his shot is well over the bar.

Bromby brings down Berbatvov and has he gone in the book for that? I don't think he has.

Owen with a shift of pace and gets past McCormack. His cross comes in and Lonergan claims in front of Berbatov's head.

Carrick gets a vital foot in as Keogh almost broke the offside trap. Great defending from a man not used to playing at CB.

Fabio makes a clever ball to Macheda, who runs out of room behind Lees. That was an opening if he could have delivered into the box.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/goal.gif"> <b>GOAL</b> Owen again! Diouf gets away from his man, puts in a cross to the edge of the area and Owen hammers it into the top corner. 2-0.

Who is that kid? What an incredible strike! Owen is rolling back the years tonight.

Leeds look shellshocked. Macheda runs at the heart of the defence and O'Dea puts in a stunning tackle.

Leeds look shellshocked. Macheda runs at the heart of the defence and O'Dea puts in a stunning tackle.

That was a great chance. Owen, Berbatov and Valencia all with one-touch play, the ball finds Valencia on the penalty spot and he's basically missed an open goal.

Leeds' defending was non existant and United can seeminly cut them apart at will.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/yellow_card.jpg" height="15"> Snodgrass with a late tackle from behind on Park. Frustration, nothing more.

That's been the story of Leeds' half though, a step behind United all the way.

Diouf penalised for a foul on White when he would have been through. Just a little push, but it was enough to knock him off balance.

The crowd, by the way, are notable quieter than they were earlier on.

And just as I say that, they launch into a song about Keogh. They need him to show up for the second half, as Carrick and Fryers have dominated him.

Owen nearly closes down the kick from Lonergan. He wants a hat-trick!

The cross finds Becchio in the middle, but his header can't reach his strike partner Keogh.

Good run for McCormack, but it eludes him and rolls out for a goal kick. Just need more cutting egde, Leeds. Amos has yet to make a save.

Fabio hacks a Leeds attack clear. They are quite happy to go in for half-time now.

Or are they? Park drives at the heart of the defence.. Lonergan comes out to claim but then spills out to Valencia who probably took the wrong option in shooting near post instead of crossing.

Diouf's strength out wide keeps the play going. He's looked sharp and worthy of more chances at United, rather than a loan move.

Two minutes left...

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/goal.gif"> <b>GOAL</b> Giggs, stunning. He nutmegs his man, and hits a deflected shot into the net. 3-0.

A really top class goal. He got lucky with the shot, but it was a sublime piece of trickery to make the space.

<b>HALF-TIME. Leeds 0-3 Man Utd.</b> Leeds have not been in the game. Owen (2) and Giggs on the stroke of the half, have put themselves in the next round unless there is a real shock.

<i>Reader Ben is a little hopeful when he says: ''In 2013, the FA will start imposing fine to clubs for playing players out of position.''</i>

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/subs.gif"> Giggs off, and Pogba on. Carrick takes the captaincy.

<b>KICK-OFF</b>. We're underway again. Miracle needed for Leeds.

Pogba's first act is to concede a free-kick. It's a bit far out to have a go though.

Howson gets the better of Owen and gets a little physical. He'll not be too concerned though after first-half heroics.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/yellow_card.jpg" height="15"> O'Dea kicks out at Owen on the floor and enters the book.

Pogba now smashes a great crossfield ball to Valencia on the other side. Not bad for a kid.

The chance came to nothing, but could have been good if Owen's control was better on the edge of the box.

Fabio wastes a good chance as he decides to shoot instead of cross, but it matters little.

White's clearance rebounds off Berbatov and it nearly flies over Lonergan. Safe hands though and it wasn't travelling that fast.

Pogba now slips and rolls around like he's been shot. Gets up pretty sheepishly.

Owen runs at the heart of the defence, it runs away from him and the ball finds Pogba whose shot is tame.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/subs.gif"> Becchio and Keogh off, Forssell and Vayrrynen on

Grayson is trying something, so lets hope for the sake of the game that it works.

Pogba is down injured now. Looks like he might have got a bang on the head.

He's up again... looks ok to continue.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/images/2011/0920/ryangiggsgroupceleb20110920_275x155.jpg"><br> Ryan Giggs enjoys the moment after a fine solo effort made it 3-0 against Leeds

Howson trying to drive Leeds on, but White loses out to Diouf and Leeds are struggling a lot in the final third.

Owen with a chance for his hat-trick. Gets away after a misjudgement from the defender, he cuts inside and tries to curl it home. It just flies wide.

Amos takes the ball under his crossbar after a deep cross. McCormack gives him a nudge and is warned by the ref. It's pretty much his first touch of the ball with his hands.

The crowd are urging their side on and Leeds are putting a few good passes together.

Amos comes and catches again. He must be getting giddy.

Diouf has done well tonight, strong and powerful he's keeping the ball well. Defenders having trouble dealing with him.

Macheda runs through and smashes a shot wide, but the offside flag was up.

Replays show he probably wasn't, but he missed the shot in any case.

Good move down the right for Leeds, but Fabio comes across and clears.

Vayrynen has had little impact and gets a chance, but fails to convert. Pogba at the other end just smashed it into row Z.

I'm a little surprised Leeds have not come out with more urgency this half. They aren't going to win by sitting back.. but then United can pick them apart whenever they like.

Valencia and Diouf combine well, but the ball over top was not taken and United choose to hold onto it instead.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/subs.gif"> McCormack off, Nunez on for Leeds.

United just went from their own box, to the Leeds one in three passes, but Park couldn't find the final ball to Owen. So much space still.

Leeds pour forward with Nunez, but the ball across is deflected and falls into the hands of Amos.

Nunez takes down Diouf and there's no yellow. Probably a little kind.

Owen and Berbatov try a little move in the box and Diouf has a shot that is blocked. Was a little ambitious.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/subs.gif"> Diouf off, Welbeck on.

A shot of Leeds owner Ken Bates in the stands... he does not look happy.

To their credit the Leeds fans are still singing, but there's very little to suggest there will be another goal in this one.

Vayrynen is through, but smashes his shot straight at Amos. He was offside, but that just sums up Leeds' night really.

Owen still chasing that hat-trick and Welbeck's ball across is deflected behind by the striker.

Leeds taking command a little bit, but United seem happy to let them.

<img src="http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/gp10/i/subs.gif"> Macheda comes off, Larnell Cole comes on for United.

Pogba pours forward with the ball and tries to start something. Berbatov considered closing down his man, but then thought better of it and wandered off in the opposite direction.

Fryers clears and it was Bromby's cross. He's done well, although has hardly been tested much.

Pogba with another long ball, but Valencia is not able to get on the end of it.

Fryers has come off, limping a little.. a good debut for him.

United are down to ten men after taking off Fryers. Berbatov is playing at centre-back!!!

I really can't believe what I'm seeing. So the defence at the moment is Fabio, Carrick, Berbatov, Valencia.

Wonder what Rio and Vidic make of seeing this?

It's not actually making any difference by the way!

The game just petering out. Leeds fans again voice up, but there's little for them to do.

United counter and try to keep the ball, but it's incredible that they can play Berbatov there without Leeds taking advantage.

A great clearing header there from Berbatov! Glanced behind for a corner.

Pogba loses the ball, but it's not long before United get it back again.

Two minutes left.. and Leeds want it over.

A chance for Leeds to get a goal, but Nunez is through and blasts his shot wide. Somehow, this United defence have kept a clean sheet and that's surely it?

<b>FULL-TIME. Leeds 0-3 Man Utd.</b> The damage was done in the first half as Michael Owen rolled back the years with a brace. Giggs ended the contest and by the end of the game, Berbatov was playing centre-back.

A very, very one-sided game and a poor effort from Leeds really. Amos was hardly tested and United march on, although I doubt Fergie will use that CB pairing in the Premier League anytime soon.
