Welcome along to today's live commentary offering. Our focus is on the big match of the day from Wembley - the official curtain raiser to the new Premier League season, the Community Shield.

It's the top two in English football head-to-head on a balmy afternoon in west London. The teams are out on the pitch and we're moments away from kick-off.

A nice moment before the players arrived saw Jose Mourinho grab Sir Alex for a quick chat and plenty of light-hearted banter. Fergie in shorts and t-shirt, Jose in his pristine suit. Nice.

There's no John Terry in the Chelsea line-up today as you can see from our top story. That means Frank Lampard will skipper the Blues and Tal Ben Haim comes into the centre of defence. Drogba is also missing, so Joe Cole starts up front on his own with Malouda and Wright-Phillips down the flanks.

And we're underway!

The last time these two sides met it was here at Wembley for that horrid FA Cup final. We're certainly hoping for an improvement on that today.

Both teams will obviously be keen to gain a psychological advantage before the start of the new season. And it's a lively start in these opening minutes.

Thankfully for the wingers and full-backs down the Chelsea right and United left, the stand has cast a welcome shadow on the pitch. But for the others down the other flank, it's pitching down!

Plenty of interesting tussles out there today, not least Ronaldo v Ashley Cole. Cole looks keen to push forward when he can, despite Ronaldo's obvious threat.

Should be plenty of keep-ball out there today. Working the ball around, farming out the possession will be key in this heat.

Chelsea making the early running and Wright-Phillips bombs down the left and fires in a low cross that calls Vidic into action. Well cleared by the centre-back.

A slight break in play for an injury to Glen Johnson. Nothing serious and he brushes himself off and slots back into position.

Chelsea aren't the kind of sidee who allow you too much room in the final third and they're quick to get plenty of men behind the ball when United come forward.

Play starting to settle down after a scrappy opening 10 minutes. Chelsea just shading it thus far but no real chances to note.

Fine defending from Ashley Cole keeps Wayne Rooney at bay from a ball over the top. Chelsea keeping the ball well at the moment and looking particularly strong at the back, despite Terry's absence.

Wright-Phillips mixes it up as he darts in from the right chasing down Lampard's clipped ball over the top. Silvestre spots him and snuffs out the danger.

Not much happening for United going forward. Chelsea are being typically stubborn at the back and stiffling play when the red shirts come forward.

Joe Cole fluffs his lines inside the United box. He got into a fine position but his cheeky jinking doesn't fool O'Shea and the Irishman comes away with the ball.

Very cagey opening 19 minutes. Mind you, I doubt I'd be sprinting around too much in that heat. Lovely air conditioning keeping me cool up here.

Wonderful flowing counter-attack from United ends with Giggs having the first chance of the match. Ronaldo switches to the left and flies down the flank, he's blocked but the ball ricochets into the path of Giggs who fires his shot on goal with his weaker right foot and Cech gets across tro deflect behind.

Two chances in as many minutes for United as the ball falls kindly to Carrick on the edge of the box, but he can't quite get it out of his feet and squirms his shot wide.

Wright-Phillips is in a spot of bother. He's picked up a slight knock but should be ok to continue.

Chelsea respond well to the two United chances. They've pushed United back into their own half and look to create something of their own.

And that's exactly what they do. Malouda swings in a cross from the right and Essien's flick on at the front post almost finds Mikel at the back stick who was inches away from connecting and giving Chelsea the lead.

Wright-Phillips - Chelsea's most potent threat so far - combines neatly with Lampard in the box but Cole strays into an offisde position and ruins the move.

Up the other end, Ronaldo fizzes in a teasing, low corss that evades everyone and Johnson does well to tip it round the post with Silvestre lurking.

It's just starting to open up a little now. Malouda cracks an effort from the left wing straight at Van der Sar and Evra does likewise at the other end after a neat passing build-up.

The tempo has increased too. It needed it and let's hope it will bring a goal.

Mourinho looks bored on the Chelsea bench. His face resting on his hand, he hardly looks bothered by proceedings.

Ben Haim looks bothered though, and he picks up the first yellow card of the afternoon for a lunge on Rooney.

GOAL: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 CHELSEA

RYAN GIGGS at last scores at Wembley! He's waited a long time for it but it's come and was a lovely finish from 12 or so yards out. Evra ghosted down the left and cut it back to Giggs who clipped it in through a cluster of bodies. First blood to the champions.

Chelsea had been resolute until that point, but were cut to shreads by Evra and Ronaldo down the left. The change in positions from the two wingers has upset Chelsea and caught them wanting on a couple of occassions.

United finishing the half well and starting to ping some delicious passes around the park. The United fans have found their voices and the Chelsea bench looks hot and bothered.

Chelsea have few options going forward. Is Joe Cole playing? Oh yes, there he is - he's been anonymous so far and offering little up front.

It's going to need the two wingers and Lampard to push forward in support if Chelsea are to press home their decent build-up play.

GOAL: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-1 CHELSEA

For the first time this half Chelsea show some penetration and it pays off. FLORENT MALOUDA muscles his way past a hapless Rio Ferdinand and slots past the on-rushing Van der Sar. It was a sweet finish with the outside of his boot, but he's caught by the Dutch keeper and picks up a knock for his troubles.

Another yellow card and this time it's Wayne Rooney who goes into the referee's book. It was a horribly late and ugly lunge on Cech and is rightly cautioned.

Cech gets to his feet after some treatment from the Chelsea physio and is fit to continue. Rooney's still seething with his card but that should be the last action of the half.

HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-1 CHELSEA

That is indeed the last action of an intriguing first 45 minutes. It hasn't been the most entertaining of ties but we've had two well-taken finishes from the two left-footers Giggs and Malouda. It's left us neatly poised for the second half too.

We're back out for the second half and surprisingly there's no changes on either side. Despite the 36C heat - yes 36C! both teams are as they were from the first half.

Chelsea get the game back under way.

Wright-Phillips carries on where he left off in the first half. Plenty of sprite, plenty of endeavour - but precious little end product it has to be said.

Leisurely start to the second period, Chelsea look to gain the upper hand in the possession stakes as in the first half.

Let off for Chelsea. Three chances in the same move as first Evra breaks into the box from the left but his shot is well blocked by Ben Haim. It falls to Ronaldo who sees his left-foot shot parried by Cech. The loose ball falls to Rooney who can't get a decent contact on it ang Giggs' huried effort is blocked by Cole.

A change for Chelsea sees Malouda make way for fellow new boy Pizarro.

That change should see Joe Cole drop back into the left-wing slot and the Peruvian leads the line up front.

These opening minutes have typified the whole match thus far. Chelsea looks comfortable on the ball and keeping it, but United look far the more threatening when going forward and look capable of slicing the Blues apart.

Every now and again Wright-Phillips gets caught ball-watching and Manchester United have failed to take advantage. O'Shea latches on to a SWP mistake but can't find Rooney with his through ball.

More neat and tidyness from Chelsea but United look firm and solid at the back. Chelsea need a spark again.

No sign of any more changes. There's plenty of young talent on the benches and the fans will want to see the likes of Nani and Sidwell.

More possession and build-up from Chelsea. Pizarro has shown a couple of neat touches, and Blues fans will be eager to see how he shapes up this season.

Decent chance for Chelsea as things start to open up. Joe Cole streaks down the left but fails to find the unmarked Wright-Phillips who was screaming for it down the right.

Plenty of gaps now and chances are coming more frequently. Both teams are streaming forward and Evra's latest forray down the left leaves Carvalho in his wake and the Portuguese defender hacks him down.

Ronaldo hits the free-kick from fully 35 yards and Cech gathers it at chest height.

Good tempo about this game now. Some meaty challenges, quick breaks and long-range efforts on either side. Chelsea look the more desperate to get a second, but United look the more assured and dangerous on the break.

The fans sense a second goal as well. Both sets of supporters are chanting for their side as we head into the three-quarter mark.

Changes afoot and Diarra replaces Ashley Cole, while for United, Silvestre makes way for new boy Nani.

Nani's scored a couple of goals in pre-season for United and much is expected of the young Portuguese winger.

Pizarro lines up a curling effort but can't quite get enough whip and bend on it to direct it around the sprawling Van der Sar.

Pizarro's introduction has certainly given United something different to think about. His presense has given a new dimention tho the Blues' play.

Disguised pass from Nani almost presents Giggs with a shot on goal, but Ben Haim is aware of the danger and snuff the Welshman out.

United starting to turn the screw again now. Rooney gets into a dangerous position and after shaking off the attentions of Ben Haim, he can't avoid the second challenge from Carvalho.

Vidic ends up on the deck in the Chelsea box under a challenge from Mikel. A half-hearted appeal for a penalty is waved away by referee Mark Halsey.

Some weary legs out there now. The game is open and a goal is there for the taking. Chelsea are looking to quicken things up on the edge of the United box, but Wright-Phillips' wasteful cross ruins another Chelsea break.

Another switch for Chelsea sees Sidwell come on for Glen Johnson. The new signing has his chance in midfield as play threatens to stretch even further with the constant changes in personell.

Chelsea aren't over-committing players here and despite their superior spell of possession, they still seem content to leave Mikel behind to guard a United counter-attack.

Speculative effort from Joe Cole fails to trouble Van der Sar, worth an effort though.

Change for United as the skipper Giggs departs for Darren Fletcher. Fine effort from the veteran.

Chelsea also decide to shake things up and there's an appearance for Scott Sinclair who comes on for Joe Cole. I'm losing track of systems here under the barrage of substitutions.

Don't forget that if it stays this way we'll go to a penalty shoot-out. There's no extra-time so we're eight minutes away from spot-kicks.

Unless, of course, one of these sides can find a breakthrough. Ronaldo almost finds it after a mistake from Mikel, but Ben Haim is up to the winger's tricks and stepovers and shadows him out of play. Fine defending from the Israeli.

The resulting corner sees Cech completely miss the cross only for Ronaldo to do likewise and Chelsea escape.

United finishing well here. More possession and Chelsea look slightly disjointed by the changes. A dangerous corner from Nani is well dealt with by Carvalho and Chelsea have everyone back.

It's looking increasingly like penalties now, though. Mourinho is off his bench and barking instructions at his midfield who he feels need to push on. Scott Sinclair does just that and earns a corner.

Chelsea waste it though as Van der Sar gathers with ease. The referee's assistant indicates there will be two added minutes.

Mikel goes into the book for a late lunge on Ronaldo. It was a lazy, mistimed tackle but no malice in it - a booking nonetheless.

FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-1 CHELSEA

No goals in the second half mean that the 2007 Community Shield will be decided by penalties.

MANCHESTER UNITED WIN THE COMMUNITY SHIELD 3-0 ON PENALTIES

A rare win for Manchester United over Chelsea. Only their second in their last 12 meetings and they've got Edwin van der Sar to thank for it. They weren't the best of spot-kicks from the Chelsea players, but the Dutchman did well to palm all three away and United are victorious.

The Blues players head up the steps first to collect their losers medals from Sir Geoff Hurst. It was a spirited performance from the FA Cup winners and they won't be happy about losing this one.

Next up to the Royal box are the Premier League champions and the Community Shield winners. Giggs leads his players up the steps and lifts aloft the 2007 Shield closely followed by the hero of the hour, Edwin van der Sar.
