Referee Mike Dean got a hug from Sheff Utd boss Kevin Blackwell ahead of the game. The choice of official was not welcomed by Blackwell who took exception to his role in the Sheffield derby and the play-off he took charge of when Blackwell was at Leeds - will that furore impact on the game?

A centrak freekick to Sheffield is taken, bounces through to Howard who tries his luck but is unable to really test Jensen.

Elliott, under pressure from no-one, latches onto a loose ball in the middle of the park and hoists a thoughtless ball long and deep into United territory. Pointless

Elliott, just after wasting the ball, scores a wonderful goal. He beat two men on a run before slipping a pass inside to Chris McCann; his shot on the edge of the box was blocked but the loose ball fell to Elliott who curled the ball into the top corner. 1-0 - wonderful strike.

Blades are rattled, but are quickly back on the attack.

Howard claims a penalty, but all the ref is prepared to offer is a corner

Jensen claims the ball from the corner - he's kept five clean sheets in his last seven games: Blades have their work cut out!

It is fair to say the goal came against the run of play, which makes it all the more sweet for Burnley

Another freekick against Morgan for a foul on Thompson. The defender just leaned into his opponent who crumbled - Morgs is a big lad, but that looked a bit soft.

Carlisle gets a just booking for a reckless tackle in Greg Halford in which the United player got a rather nasty set of stud marks in his leg

Burnley, down to 10 men, break. David Cotterill gets a foot in to stem the attack and the United counter

No sooner is back on then he is down on the floor clutching his knee

The change is made - sad day for McCann who has clearly got a knee that is not working the way it should. On in his place comes Joey Gudjonsson.

United scrapping hard in midfield and winning the ball - but United's hard-fought attack ends with Cotterill fouling Christian Kalvenes.

Martin Patterson checked in side his marker to create space for a swerving drive right of the United penalty area; but the ball just drifted wide of the far post. Great effort - more worries for United.

Carlisle - already booked - wins a 50-50 ball but clatters into Naughton. The pace of the the challenges meant that Naughton is in as much pain for landing on his shoulder as for the studs down his leg.

Carlisle is looked at sternly by the ref - but nothing more. He's a lucky lad.

Burnley show some neat one-touch passes to play their way out of difficulty at the back

Attempts on goals so far suggest the game has been quite even - but McCann's wonderful strike is the key difference with ten minutes to go before the half.

Offside given against Thompson - wrong call. Morgan was playing him onside.

The pace of the game belies the fact that the temperature at pitch side is close to 100 degrees

United unhappy not to be given a freekick - close call, the player looked to ahve been hauled down

At the other end Burnley get nothing when they are sure they should have won a corner.

Jensen comes to claim a great cross from the left flank - "Beast" is the call from the Burnley fans, in reference to their keeper's nickname

Naughton was about to take a throw but then dropped the ball grimacing - his shoulder clearly still causing him pain after that awkward landing

The ball is clipped in and bounces free - but no-one is there to lash it home. United escape, but Burnley could easily have been 2-o up

Howard lets his temper get the better of him and Blades give away a freekick when they had a throw in an advanced position. They need to keep their cool if they are to get level.

Burnley are not in the midfield battle at the moment - its all Blades, and the fans know it and try to raise their side.

For all their position in the last 10 mins Blades have not created anything of note.

Thomspon comes within a metre of making it 2-0 for Burnley after a great move ends with a delicious ball in from the right wing and a looping header drops just wide of the United goal

United getting frustrated with their lack of potency. Nick Montgomery demands a penalty for a non-existent handball.

The halftime whistle goes - Burnley are 45 minutes from the Premier League.

Wade Elliott's goal is the difference between the two sides. His moment of magic give Burnley the advantage and could be the goal that gets his side back in the top flight for the first time since 1976.

Paterson concedes a throw but in doing so he stopped a promising United break

Nick Montgomery somehow blocks a Gudjonsson effort on the line. He knew nothing about it and concedes a corner. A deep ball from the right was headed across goal by Thompson, Gudjonsson connected but somehow Montgomery got in the way and Blades survived what would have been a knockout blow.

Burnley seem to have reverted to a long ball defensive attitude in response to Blades' last ditch efforts.

Blackwell is furious - Ward's first booking was terribly unfair, his second totally justified.

With ten minutes to go Wembley is polarised - at one end joy, the other silence.

Morgan is livid - shouting at Dean and shaking his head. He needs to keep that temper in check

Quick break: Elliott could finished it with a shot or a decent ball wide to Paterson... he does neither, plays a weak pass wide to Paterson who is tackkled. Burnley should have finished this game five times over by now.

The Sheffield United playes are on the floor, broken men each and everyone. Burnley are in rapture - they have reached the Premier League and are back in the top flight for the first time in 33 years.

Burnley were the better side over the 90 minutes but were lucky not to be punished - there were at least five good chances they squandered and as United pressed it looked like they could be chances they'd regret.

It is unlikely Blackwell will be sending a Christmas card to Mike Dean. There were a few decent penalty shouts and the red card for Ward. They will feel hard done by, but in truth the better team won and Burnley will be in the Premier League next season!
