The atmosphere is incredible - Barca fans are creating a wall of colour and noise and spelling out the words 'to Glasgow' in a huge mosaic of coloured cards...

...wonder if we'll see that sort of thing at Old Trafford tomorrow?

Real poised to get us under way...

We're off - one of the most momentous games you could wish to see. Barca win the ball back swiftly and win an early free-kick on half way

They have the ball at the back and are passing it around well, just keeping things cool at the start

...suddenly, Zidane gets in for Real and the ball falls for Roberto Carlos, whose cross is too long to create any danger

Thiago Motta tries something ambitious from long range for the home side - the ball deflects and Real keeper Sanchez Cesar holds on well

There's still a haze of smoke over the ground from the hundreds of pre-match flares as Real whip the ball into the area through Carlos once more

Once more, Barca stand their ground well

Lovely control from Kluivert buys the home side some time on the ball - but then Motta plays a careless pass and the advantage is lost

Overmars wins it back and Kluivert takes up the charge - he fires in a low shot which is saved

Here come Real once again... Zidane and Jose Maria Guti link. Carlos crosses - it's a corner...

Zidane takes the kick and keeper Oscar Bonano is there

Luis Enrique goes for goal from long range, and that's harmlessly over the top. End to end

Saviola races towards a Luis Enrique flick - it's just too far ahead of him

...then Kluivert breaks through and only a superb stop by Cesar denies Barca the early lead they crave

No-nonsense defensive work by Fabio Rochemback sets Barca on the attack again: the crowd's approval is almost deafening

Solari is writhing in agony after a Luis Enrique challenge on the halfway line - the Barcelona man gets a yellow card

He's back, and we're under way again. Luis Enrique crosses, Ivan Helguera clears. Philip Cocu takes it on, and his shot is deflected behind for a corner...

Luis Enrique sends a header crashing against the crossbar, and Barca are so close to the lead their recent momentum probably deserves

Back come Real, with more patient passing - it lets Raul in and Bonano races to the edge of his area and tips the effort around the post

Zidane takes the corner deep, Roberto Carlos fires in a shot from 20 yards and it zips past the far post

Another Barca chance - Motta crosses and Real only just scramble that one away from danger

This is shaping up to be an excellent game, open and enterprising

Barcelona move forwad once more, but Solari is there to take the ball on for the visitors - they can't make anything of it

Motta crosses deep for Barca - too deep, and Real can watch that one drift by

Saviola demonstrates dazzling control to set up Kluivert, whose shot fizzes over the top. Beautiful move from the home side there

More flicks and deftness set Cocu down the left, but a foul by the Dutchman gives Real a free-kick

Overmars, Luis Enrique and Saviola look to create more magic: Overmars shoots from the edge of the area and it's wide. Barca getting in control of proceedings

Barca are winning the ball tigerishly in midfield - and keeping it well: then Cocu gives it away to Zidane...

Zidane on the ball for Real - Roberto Carlos gets possession, but his final cross is uncharacteristically wayward and comes to nothing

At the other end, Overmars attacks and wins a corner...

Rochemback hits an instinctive long-range effort, which isn't too far over the top - good try from the Barca star

Free-kick to Barca some 35 yards out... Rochemback plays it in, but it comes to nothing

At the other end, Solari gets away from his defender and crosses - it eludes everyone. A good chance spurned by Real

A little spell of Real possession here: they have the ball inside their own half

Cocu takes it on and Overmars, under pressure, wins a throw

Motta tries a 35-yard effort: well hit, but over the top

Roberto Carlos has space and finds Guti in the area... his control lets him down but he still wins a corner

Bonano gathers it well, and Barca are playing with great intensity... can they turn it into a first-leg advantage?

Salgado challenges Overmars strongly...

He's booked for his pains, but Barcelona can't keep the ball from the resulting free-kick

Then Motta is felled by Solari, and Barca have another free-kick in a good crossing position

Motta plays it in, and Hierro produces a good defensive header

Roberto Carlos is fouled, and Kluivert isn't happy with that decision. Plenty of opinions being aired, but the end result is a Real free-kick

Five minutes to go until the break, and Real may feel they have weathered the worst of what Barca can throw at them before half-time

Saviola attempts to keep the pressure on: Cesar gathers well and Real move downfield to win a free-kick

Kluivert is back there to clear the danger with a good header

Saviola produces great skills to cross - Overmars takes the ball on just inside the area...

...he attempts a shot, which is blocked and cleared by the massed Madrid ranks

Salgado is having treatment after an awkward fall during that home attack... but he's back on his feet reasonably quickly

Dying seconds of the half now: there's been, as you would expect, some superb football - but no goals so far

Rochemback looks to change that, racing into the area but being denied by Cesar's brave claim. The keeper's hurt...

Team-mate Claude Makelele collided with him

He's OK, though, and the whistle is surely only seconds away now

Barca get the second half under way - they're desperate to take an advantage from this home leg

...Overmars finds Luis Enrique, who fires in the first shot of the half. It's only half hit, and bobbles wide

It's positive play from Barca, but Solari steps in for Real and is fouled on halfway. Free-kick

Rochemback wins the ball back well, but a no-frills clearance prevents Barca from making anything of it

Real's turn now... Guti and Michel Salgado combine before the ball is given away

...Overmars takes it on, crosses and sees it cleared. Motta had set him up with a raking through-ball

Saviola races on, and Pavon catches him late. Free-kick, midway inside the Real half

Raul comes forward for Real, but his attempt to make a breakthrough fails

...he motors into the area and lofts the ball over Bonano, who gets a touch but can't prevent it going in. Real - against the run of play - lead 1-0!

A crucial breakthrough, and suddenly it's gone very quiet...

Motta crosses towards Kluivert as Barca look to hit back, but that comes to nothing...

...Overmars crosses again and Luis Enrique heads goalwards - and only narrowly wide of the post

He should have levelled the game. Kluivert tries with a turn and shot, which Real do well to block. Barca turning up the heat

The home side make a change: Deiberson Geovanni comes on for Reiziger

Meanwhile, Guti sidefoots just wide when he could have sealed the game for the visitors

Rochemback plays another cross in for Barcelona, and the visitors again stand their ground...

...then Saviola breaks into the area after more good work from Overmars, and his shot demands - and gets - a good save

Real counter again...

Solari moves down the left to win a free-kick, and Raul attempts to flick the ball into the danger zone

Barca scrape it away, but Raul is there again and Abelardo heads clear from almost on his own goal-line

It's an absorbing game, and Real's technical brilliance will be more and more to the fore on breakaways

Saviola looks for Luis Enrique on the edge of the area, but there's a great deal of calm about the visitors' defending in this half

They're beginning to look almost comfortable with this 1-0 away advantage

Cocu can't change that, providing a cross which only drifts behind

Solari crosses at the other end - nobody's there this time, but Real look more than capable of adding to their score

Free-kick to the visitors on the half-way line. Just about 20 minutes remaining

You can sense the belief beginning to drain away from the home crowd

Looks like another change is imminent for Barcelona, with Philippe Christanval getting ready to come on

Overmars pings in another cross: Real, though, are clearing these with some comfort

Abelardo is off and Christanval comes on as Real keeper Cesar gets booked for timewasting

Saviola goes to ground under a strong Hierro challenge... Kluivert is booked for protesting about the foul a little too strongly

No joy from the free-kick - it's becoming a little predictable in attack for Barca

Barca on the ball, but Motta's efforts to play it into the area are thwarted

Another deep cross comes in - it's cleared as far as Geovanni, whose shot is wayward

Solari breaks into the Barcelona area after some crisp passing from the visitors...

He shoots powerfully, and Bonano manages to keep it out

Then Overmars cracks one in from distance and it's Cesar's turn to make a stop

Another Real break, another Guti chance - a tame finish. It could easily have been 2-0 by now

Steve McManaman comes on for Guti. Ten minutes remaining

Motta crosses, Real clear and Barcelona look like a team fast running out of ideas and options

Motta goes off and Garcia de la Torre Gabri will be his replacement. Last throw of the dice for the Catalan side

Real surge forward again - they're very close to a crucial win as McManaman races towards the area and is fouled by Overmars, who is booked

This is a very dangerous free-kick...

Roberto Carlos hammers it in - and hits the defensive wall

He tries another shot soon afterwards, but it's sliced and it's over the bar

Rochemback crosses towards Kluivert, who can't get there and shows his frustration

Raul's keeping the ball well, just trying to use up time - but Barca snap in...

...and win a late corner, which McManaman clears

Solari is caught at that corner, and looks to be injured again

Meanwhile, Geovanni whips in a 25-yard shot and sees it bounce to safety off the top of the crossbar

Conceicao is on for Real as the game enters its final seconds. Kluivert heads goalwards, Cesar saves

Another Barcelona cross, another Real clearance, another chance for Zidane to break. Three minutes of added time to be played

Pavon flicks a cross behind - late, late corner to Barcelona

Cesar is there again to make another commanding claim

Substitute Conceicao breaks forward and finds another substitute, Steve McManaman...

...he advances into the area and calmly lofts the ball over Bonano and into the net. It's a great finish, it's 2-0 to Real - and they're very close to a place in the final now
