Aston Villa – Newcastle United

1. Join as 16.00 UK as Newcastle United manager Alan Shearer attempts to save his beloved club from relegation.

2. Right then, it all comes down to this. Newcastle's near 20-year spell in the Premier League could well be over in 90 minutes time. You can follow all the twists and turns live here, with me Chris Murphy. And just to add a little more spice, if any were needed, please note I am a Newcastle fan. God's teeth this could get hairy.

3. Aston Villa: Friedel, Gardner, Davies, Cuellar, Shorey, Milner, Petrov, Barry, Ashley Young, Carew, Agbonlahor. Subs from: Guzan, Sidwell, Delfouneso, Knight, Heskey, Reo-Coker and Albrighton.

4. Newcastle: Harper, Coloccini, Steven Taylor, Edgar, Duff, Guthrie, Nolan, Butt, Lovenkrands, Viduka and Martins. Subs: Krul, Jose Enrique, Owen, Smith, Gutierrez, Ameobi and Ryan Taylor.

5. So, the equation is simple. If Newcastle better Hull City's result, they will survive. If lose they are down. Relegation could cost up to £60million. No pressure then chaps, what what.

6. As ever with the season's finale, the weather is glorious. Despite the warm summer sunshine the storm clouds have been gathering over the Toon all campaign and now it all comes down to this. Will their underperforming stars stand up or shrivel and hide as usual?

7. And what of Villa? They have a record as bad as Newcastle's in the last 12 games. What do they have to play for? Fifth place, and a better points tally than last season, they say.

   Nolan launches a throw into the box before Milner hoofs downfield, Coloccini just manages to keep pace with Agbonlahor in their chase for the ball and the referee gives Newcastle a free kick.

    Now Agbonlahor meets Barry's cross and nods it just over the bar.

    Coloccini now hauls Milner back as he was racing towards the box. Poor defending. Free kick.

    Villa take it short and Milner's cross was too long and untouched. I wonder how he'll be feeling today? He was a Newcastle player this time last year after all.

    Handball from Gardener gives Newcastle some respite. Colocinni has had a dreadful first five minutes, looking as quivery as his permed bonce.

    Newcastle's first forray forward sees Viduka float in an errant cross. Goal kick.

    Duff and Lovenkrands combine down the left but the cross is blocked.

    Lovenkrands swings in another cross but Barry clears. A spell of possession for the away side.

    Now a good effort from Duff is saved - just - by Friedel after Nolan obscured his view. Corner.

    Now off the line! Steven Taylor swivels after a cross was knocked down and Gardener is there to boot it away!

    Butt clatters into Ashley Young miles too late and is lucky to escape a booking.

    Young punts one forward but Carew is offside. No goals elsewhere by the way, well, in the game's that matter anyway.

    Viduka wins a header and flicks on for Martins who blazes over the bar on the volley! What a chance!

    Martins nearly profits from a long ball from Duff then Nolan can't quite direct a touch to Guthrie after Lovenkrands' cross was touched by Cuellar.

    Duff does well to shepherd the ball behind after neat control from James Milner.

    Nolan musters up a weak effort from 20 yards after Martins' lay-off.

    Terrible pass from Nolan after nice touches from Viduka and Martins. The front two look lively for us, err I mean Newcastle.

    Barry sweeps a ball wide for Young and Edgar is in quickly to clear.

    Super strike from Gardner and a quality save from Steve Harper. Corner.

    Agbonlahor crosses and Barry collides with Harper but the 'keeper did enough to get something on the ball.

    Young's trickery fools Edgar but his cross is long and sails harmlessly behind.

    Viduka flicks on and Friedel is out quick smart to hack away from Martins. And! Man Utd have taken the lead at Hull!

    Its an absolute belter too! Darron Gibson has smashed one into the top corner for 35 yards. Hull look bereft. The Toon Army celebrate as if Shearer had scored himself!

    Young swings in another corss and Duff and Harper marshall it out to safety. As it stands Newcastle are staying up on goal difference, but there's still more than an hour left of Doom Sunday.

    Will news of that goal change Newcastle's approach?! Surely not - they still must keep the mindset that they need a win.

    Coloccini does well to block Milner's shot. He's going to score today - no doubt about it. Milner that is. Well, unless Coloccini bangs one in his own net.

    Agbonlahor is a yard offside as Barry tries to slip him through.

    Nolan and Guthrie try a tight one two and Milner concedes a corner.

    Duff's corner is headed away at the near post by Ashley Young. Newcastle have to make the most of their set pieces.

    Coloccini hits a ball downfield but Viduka is muscled out of it by Cuellar.

    Steven Taylor is booked for holding onto Agbonlahor. Free kick in a dangerous place.

    Harper saves low down from Milner's free kick and Macheda misses a great chance to make it 2-0 for Man Utd at Hull.

    Taylor does well to clear Carew's cross after he charged down the right and Harper claims a cheeky Gardner lob into the box. Home side well on top again now though.

    Now Butt gets in the way of Harper as a good Young cross came in. Needless corner conceded.

    GOAL! Duff own goal!

    Barry fires in a shot and the ball deflects off Duff and wrongfoots Harper. Cursed luck for the Toon.

    Newcastle now need to score to have any hope of staying up.

    Now Taylor makes a good challenge to get the ball from Young as he shimmied into the penalty area.

    Agbonlahor has so nearly made it two! Carew finds acres of space, smashes in a cross and the striker's flick bobbles just wide of the post with Harper beaten.

    The camera closes in on Michael Owen sitting on the bench. How long will he get today I wonder? And will it be his last action in a Newcastle shirt? Probably.

    Duff crosses as Newcastle try to rally.

    Nolan fails with two long throws then crosses out of play under no pressure at all. Great signing that. Another reason to be thankful for the existence of Joker Kinnear.

    Lovenkrands swings in a cross as Newcastle find a late burst of pressure. Then Martins flicks a header wide from ten yards out with the last effort of the first half!

    Early news from Sunderland and Nicolas Anelka has smashed in a pearler to give Chelsea the lead at the Stadium of Light. But Sunderland can only be drawn into it if Newcastle win, which doesn't look particularly likely at present.

    David Edgar hoofs one down the line to no-one in particular. So, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Hull and Sunderland are all losing. No change there then..

    Barry crosses aftrer being given far too much space on the right and Taylor heads clear. Now Edgar concedes another needless corner. Newcastle living dangerously.

    Harper palms away Young's corner after being deceived in the flight and Villa are camped in their half.

    Kieran Richardson has levelled things up for Sunderland as Ashley Young curls a right footed shot just wide.

    Agbonlahor finds lots of room inside the area but floats a poor ball over the bar under no pressure. Tiredness perhaps but that was a good chance. Newcastle haven't turned up this second half yet.

    There's no cohesion at all from Newcastle - they can't keep hold of the ball when they get it. Villa may tire as the game goes on though, given their long season, so Newcastle have to remain in touch.

    James Milner is the latest to be afforded the freedom of Newcastle's half but his shot drags wide. Looks like Jose Enrique is coming on.

    Coloccini boots behind for a corner as Barry puts in another ball. Toon going down on this form - Scunthorpe here we come.

    Enrique has only just recovered from a hamstring injury so it is a big gamble. Lovenkrands makes way, Enrique goes to left back and Duff pushes forward.

    Still no sign of Michael Owen. It can't be long before Shearer goes three up top. West Ham back in front and its goodnight Vienna for the 'Boro.

    A big roar goes up as the Toon's manager salutes the cry of "Shearer, Shearer give us a wave." What he's got to wave about Lord knows.

    Enrique gives the ball back to Harper who rushes his clearance. Still no sniff for Newcastle in this second half.

    Curtis Davies gets out of jail after nearly letting Martins connect with Guthrie's through ball, but Newcastle have a corner.

    Two superb crosses from Danny Guthrie and two excellent clearing headers from Davies, then Gardner.

    Brilliant run and cross from Ashely Young down the left. It was just a tad too pacey for Agbonlahor to meet it though. Then Nicky Butt hands possession to Barry and he curls a shot round the post. What a chance to seal the game, and Newcastle's fate.

    Now Edgar gives the ball away but Agbonlahor slips, then Edgar throws to Taylor who knocks it directly out of play. Not much character on show from Newcastle this second half. How depressing.

    I don't think Owen has touched the ball yet. Oh, now he has.

    Enrique looks for Martins down the right but the ball is too long. Oh joy, Shola Ameobi looks like he's coming on.

    Villa change first though as Heskey comes on for Gardner.

    Ameobi wins a header but it goes out for a goal kick. Where's the passion lads?

    I'm going to stick my neck out say there'll be another goal in this game. Which way it goes, I've no idea.

    Carew has just missed an open goal from four yards out! Agbonlahor makes a fool of Enrique and crosses, Taylor slips and Carew only had to get a purposeful touch on it to score but he missed it!

    Now Young goes on a mazy run and blazes a shot over.

    Our commentator Martin Tyler has a dig at Newcastle's fans for not shouting their hearts out. They are paralysed with fear for God's sake man.

    David Edgar gets booked for hauling down Ashley Young.

    The problem with having three up front is that you surrender possession so easily in other areas of the field.

    Chelsea are 3-1 up at Sunderland, but they are safe now anyway. Reo-Coker is on for Petrov.

    Enrique swings in a cross and Friedel is slow on the uptake but the ball flies just wide.

    Ameobi deomnstrates how utterly useless he is by shooting when Martins was well placed. His shot went miles over the bar you'll be gobsmacked to hear.

    Iain Dowie talks tactics with Shearer but Big Al looks utterly disinterested. He knows it is down to fate now.

    John Carew comes off to a great reception. Sidwell comes on in his place.

    This is looking very grim for Newcastle now. They look knackered and can't get anywhere near the ball.

    Four minutes added as Ameobi blasts a volley over the bar. I can't take much more of this.

    Well, is it time to start pointing the finger? I'm going for it, so Mike Ashely take a bow. You have decimated a once proud football club.

    Enrique crosses this time and Ameobi heads over the bar. A difficult chance but true to form it never looked like creeping in. Taylor is up front now too.

    Owen miscontrols an Ameobi pass and gets the last touch so Villa have the throw.

    David Edgar is sent off for hauling down Ashley Young and that should be that.

     Emile Heskey wastes time in the corner as the clock runs down on Newcastle's Premier League stint. The full time whistle goes and Newcastle United have been relegated from the top flight.

     Alan Shearer looks completely gutted as the tears flow in the stands. The story of today has been the story of the season - Newcastle just haven't been good enough. They went out with a whimper in the end, befitting a chaotic season in which decisions at the top have ultimately sealed their fate.

     You look at the pitch and see Owen, Viduka, Duff, and Martins and wonder how on earth Newcastle ended up in this position. Utter mismanagement of the club is a huge factor I feel but ultimately the players haven't shown anywhere near enough. The future looks bleak for the Toon I'm afraid. On the bright side, this might at least bankrupt Mike Ashley. I hope the man is happy with this mess that he's made. What a clown.
