Arsenal – Liverpool

2. Liverpool have rushed Cheyrou back ahead of schedule and he will occupy the left-wing, with Riise dropping back to left-back.

3. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger plays Kanu alongside Henry, with Jeffers and Bergkamp dropped to the bench.

4. Liverpool have taken only three points from a possible 21 and must get a result here at Highbury to remain championship contenders.

   Diao gets Liverpool's last game of the year underway.

   Liverpool are sporting their black and grey away kit, with Arsenal in their familiar red and white strip.

   Seaman hoofs the ball upfield but it comes straight back. It's third time lucky for the keeper.

   Cheyrou drives into the box, Murphy takes it off his toe attempts to turn his defender but can't. No chance for a shot and Arsenal clear their lines.

   Lauren finds space for a cross from the right. It's a poor one and Hyypia lashes the ball upfield.

    Pires whips the ball into the area. It's over the head of Henry and just behind Kanu.

    Arsenal play it along the back four. Baros intercepts the eventual forward pass.

    Hyypia mops up at the back for Liverpool and plays the ball back to Kirkland, who hits a longball upfield.

    Riise's long throw is headed clear by Campbell, but only as far as Gerrard....

    .....Gerrard scuffs his volley and the ball trickles it's way to Seaman.

    Pires drives into the Liverpool box and then decides to sit down and claim a penalty. No chance says the ref.

    Arsenal applying a little pressure now and Riise blocks a shot for a corner.

    Pires takes it. Hyypia heads clear and Henchoz concedes another corner.

    Pires' cross richochets around a crowded penalty area. Gilberto pounces on the ball and hits a low shot wide of Kirkland's lefthand post.

    Gilberto chips the ball over the Liverpool defence. Riise spots the danger and hoofs the ball into row Z.

    Wiltord finds space on the right and whips in a cross that Henchoz turns around the near post for a corner.

    Pires takes the corner. Campbell rises above the Liverpool defence and heads the ball into the bottom lefthand cornner of the net.

    The ref says Campbell was climbing all over Diao and gives Liverpool a freekick. No goal.

    Gerrard, who has been off the pace so far, finds some space in midfield and blasts a 30-yard shot six miles over Seaman's crossbar.

    Arsenal creep up the pitch until Carragher cuts out a cross-field ball from Gilberto. Good defending from the right-back.

    Neutrals will be hoping for a Liverpool goal, to keep the title race close, but there is no sign of one coming as yet.

    Carragher is getting booed by the Highbury crowd - following the coin throwing incident here last season.

    Murphy and Cole both go into a tough challenge. Cole comes off second best and needs treatment.

    The Arsenal left-back is on his feet as Seaman hoofs the ball upfield.

    Murphy attempts a return ball to Gerrard, on the right-wing, but it's a poor pass and a good Liverpool move collapses.

    Campbell chips the ball forward and Hyypia wins yet another header to clear Liverpool's lines.

    Pires takes Arsenal's sixth corner of the match. Kirkland rushes off his line to punch the ball clear.

    Wiltord and Cole probe the left-wing whilst Liverpool players go to ground. Henchoz eventually slides in with a successful tackle.

    Arsenal are doing all the attacking, but Liverpool are defending well.

    Owen looks like he has got a problem and Diouf is tacking his tracksuit off on the touchline.

    Henry clips the ball through the Liverpool defence and Wiltord finds himself clear for the first time.......

    ....Kirkland is off his line in a flash. He bears down on Wiltord and blocks his shot from close range.

    Pires takes another Arsenal corner. Campbell rises highest but Kirkland gets his body behind the defender's powerful header.

    Owen leaves the field and is replaced by Senegal striker Diouf.

    It's looking grim for the Reds at the moment. Even the sniff of a shot anywhere near the Arsenal goal would be nice.

    Diao vents his frustration with a reckless challenge and gets booked.

    Arsenal have had all the play, but Liverpool's cautious tactics are working so far.

    Pires bottles out of a challenge with Diao and Liverpool spring an attack.....

    Another corner for Arsenal, their ninth. Riise heads clear at the near post.

    Gilberto manufactures some space on the right and delivers a cross. Henry can't direct his header and the ball spins wide.

    Diouf is down cluching his knee and the Liverpool bench are on their feet gesturing angrily to the ref.

    Diouf is back on his feet and Vieira's late challenge goes unpunished.

    Cole drives down the left. Wiltord tries a cheeky flick over his head and Carragher is forced to concede yet another corner.

    Campbell poses an ariel threat once again. This time his header is only inches wide of Kirkland's left-hand post.

    Liverpool win a freekick on the right of the Arsenal box, Cheyrou will deliver....

    ...the Frenchman tries 'a Ronaldinho' and Seaman is happy to see the ball sail over his crossbar - a rare shot from Liverpool.

    Arsenal are delivering crosses from all sorts of angles but can't find a way through Liverpool's massed ranks.

    The ref blows his whistle and the first-half ends 0-0.

54. It's been all Arsenal, but Liverpool have stood relatively firm in defence and the Gunners have failed to turn pressure into goals.

55. Reds boss Gerard Houllier will surely want some kind of attacking threat in the second-half....or will he be happy with a 0-0 draw now Owen has gone off injured?

56. The word from the Liverpool dressing room is that Owen has a 'tight hamstring' - a blow for the striker and the Reds.

    Arsenal get the second-half underway and build from the back.

    Pires tries an early long-range shot, which Henchoz decides to block with his face.

    Diouf gets into the Arsenal box and wins a corner for the Reds - they are doing better already.

    Just like at the other end Campbell is imperious in the air and heads clear at the near post.

    Gilberto tackles Diouf. Lauren drives down the right-wing but Riise guides the ball out for a goalkick.

    Henchoz collides with Henry during an ariel challenge and Arsenal get a freekick. Murphy mouths off at the ref and gets booked.

    Henry takes the freekick quickly. Kirkland is alive to the danger and smothers the ball low to his right.

    Liverpool attack through Baros. The striker chips the ball into the box for Diouf, who can't control the ball and the chance goes begging.

    Arsenal are straight back on the attack. Henry hits a shot from the edge of the box, it takes a defelection off Henchoz and Kirkland blocks it....

    .....the rebound falls to Pires and this time Kirkland palms the shot over the crossbar. Great goalkeeping as Arsenal apply the pressure.

    Diouf wins a corner and Hyypia comes up from the back. Arsenal head clear and break quickly....

    ....Henry drives at Carragher but the right-back holds his ground and gets in a challenge, much to the dismay of the boo-boys.

    Henry lays the ball off for Wiltord, who drives into the box and rides a lunging tackle from Carragher......

    ...Kirkland is off his line once more and Wiltord powers his shot inot the side netting.

    Baros skips past two defenders and feeds Diouf on the right. The Senegal striker wins a corner off Campbell.

    The ball drops to Diouf, three yards out, but he can't get any power on the header and Cole clears off the line.....

    .....the clearence drops to Baros who blasts his shot into orbit.

    Keown and Seaman have a misunderstanding and Baros nips in to win the ball. The striker shoots from a very tight angle and hits the near post.

    This is more like it from Liverpool. It finally looks like we have a match on our hands.

    Wenger seems determined to swing the balance back in Arsenal's favour and Bergkamp is stripping off on the touchline.

    Diao fouls Keown and Arsenal make their substitution. Kanu is replaced by Bergkamp.

    Diouf latches onto a Kirkland clearence and sets Cheyrou up to deliver a cross - the ball goes straight out of play.

    Diouf is becoming a menace and feeds Baros. The striker's first touch lets him down and Arsenal clear.

    Diouf sets Baros off again. This time the Czech collects the balland drives inot the box. Campbell dives in and Baros hits the deck.....

    ......an age seems to pass before the ref eventually points to the spot. Penalty. There's an argument about who will take it before Murphy steps up.

    Murphy opts to go right, but so does Seaman.....

    ....there is too much power and placement on the spot kick and the ball rockets into the top corner. GOAL!!!!

    Liverpool take a 1-0 lead. Amazing after their first-half display.

    The Reds fans find their voices and chants of 'Liverpool' echo around Highbury.

    Arsenal have to recover now and it should be an exciting finish to the game.

    Jeffers is getting ready to come on as Wenger looks for an equalising goal.

    Pires and Lauren combine on the right but can't find a way through the Liverpool defence.

    Only 15 minutes to go as Liverpool hang-on for what would be a crucial victory.

    Arsenal make their change and Jeffers, a former Evertonian, replaces Wiltord.

    Murphy and Pires battle for the ball. The ref blows for a soft foul and gives Arsenal the freekick.

    Jeffers turns Riise on the edge of the area. The defender sticks out an arm and Jeffers takes a tumble in the box.......

    ...the ref points to the spot for a dubious penalty. Henry steps up to take it.

    No mistake from Henry as he blasts the spot kick high into the back of the net. GOAL!!!!!

    Jeffers had an instant effect and now the game is up for grabs - it could go either way.

    Henry delivers a cross from the left. Gerrard can only flick the ball on and Kirkland claims at the back post.

    Baros attacks for Liverpool and a last ditch challenge from Lauren results in a corner for the Reds.

    Gerrard's corner sails over everybody and out for a goalkick. A wasted opportunity for Liverpool.

    Arsenal make another change. Van Bronckhorst replaces Pires.

     Riise chips the ball forward to Baros. The striker is giving Campbell a torrid but the Arsenal defender manages to get in a vital tackle.

     Amazingly Houllier has decided to take Baros off and replace him with Biscan. Looks like the manager is settling for a draw.

     Arsenal aren't. Gilberto drives forward through midfield and Diao is forced to hack down the Brazilian and snub the danger.

     Campbell loses the ball in defence. Biscan pounces on the ball and hits a 20-yard shot over the crossbar. No composure from the midfielder.

     Hyypia steps up to head the ball forward, but he gets too much power behind it and the ball runs through to Seaman.

     The bounces between three Liverpool defender's, they all leave the ball to each other and Jeffers races into the box for a header.....

     ....Kirkland gets there ahead of the striker and claims the ball with authority.

     Murphy drives through the midfield and gets a sight of goal. He hits a curling long-range shot that drifts wide of Seaman's left-hand post.

     Arsenal drive straight down the other end and Bergkamp finds Cole on the wing. The left-back looks up and plays the ball across the face of goal for Gilberto on the back post.....

     ....The Brazilian has a great chance to make it 2-1 but his sidefoot shot amazingly goes wide.

     That's the last chance of the match. The ref blows his whistle and the points are shared at Highbury.

111. Despite an ultra-defensive start to the game Liverpool will be disappointed to leave with only one point after taking the lead from the spot.

112. Arsenal, despite all their pressure, needed a dubious penalty to take a share of the points and now move five points clear at the top of the Premiership.
