AC Milan – Internazionale

1. Evening all. Serie A's premier derby is now just moments away from kick-off and, as usual, we'll be bringing you coverage of events at the San Siro...

2. AC Milan have been guilty of enjoying Internazionale's decline more than any other, but Inter's form has improved more recently.

3. Inter know that the teams at the top of Serie A have dropped points regularly so a win here can inspire a potential, unlikely title challenge. Doing so is easier said than done, however, with the dangerous Zlatan Ibrahimovic-Alexandro Pato frontline to contend with.

4. Both teams are out on the pitch after completing a minute's silence and kick-off is now imminent...

   As has come to be commonplace in fixtures for both Milan sides, there are some ageing talents on display, Alessandro Nesta and Walter Samuel amongst them...

   Milan concede an early free-kick to Inter on the edge of the half-way line...

   And Milan now win their own in a similar position following a foul by Samuel on Pato, who some expected to be playing for Paris St-Germain in France by now.

    Well defended from Milan who held a high defensive line from Maicon's free-kick, catching Thiago Motta offside. For his part, Motta's header past Abbiati deserved a goal.

    Inter concede another free-kick, this time for the foul on Boateng, or 'Prince'. Probably not shooting distance but the danger remains present.

    Poor use of the free-kick. Inter nullify any threat and now look to break, with the evergreen Zanetti leading a counter attack.

    Ibrahimovic takes his first shooting opportunity to test Julio Caeser but the Brazilian 'keeper is alert to the danger and saves well.

    Motta's now back on his feet, so play will resume imminently.

    Julio Caeser gives the ball away to Milan following a poor clearance. In his defence he was put under pressure by the passback it should have been dealt with better.

    Maicon crosses deep into Milan's box and though it's cleared, the danger remains and Inter still look to attack...

    Boateng fires over! Emmanuelson's low corner - a typical training ground move - gives the Ghanain a shooting opportunity but he fails to keep it down.

    Milito and Maicon exchange possession delightfully, playing a swift 'one-two' in the penalty box before the Brazilian fires at Abbiati. Best move of the game so far.

    Milan now threatening again, with Pato's low ball across the penalty box, after getting in behind Maicon, deflected out for a corner by Samuel.

    Maicon heads the corner clear. Zambrotta's attempts to reignite their attack with a deep cross but Julio Caeser eventually collects.

    Milan break again. Ibrahimovic, casual as ever, is tackled by Lucio for a throw-in when on the edge of Inter's penalty box.

    Little has changed. Inter aren't putting on any pressure to win the ball back unless they consider the situation to be dangerous, while Milan are currently patiently waiting for an opening. The occasional long(er) ball is forced but it comes to little because, simply, there's nothing to aim for.

    Before Milan's own counter is ended by a foul on Ibrahimovic. It was a foul, but the Swede's dive in ensuring the foul was given was rather comical.

    Possession-wise, Milan are by far the more superior team but it's difficult to argue they've had any real chances and deserve the lead.

    Milito, in particular, is a clinical finisher so it'd be no surprise to see Inter play counter-attacking football and look to use his qualities.

    But his play is ponderous and predictable. Milan now have the ball back in defence.

    ...who fails to control quite as he'd please and fires straight at the alert Abbiati. A reminder to Milan of Inter's threat - the 'away' side have certainly been more dangerous in front of goal, even if they haven't had as much of the ball as they'd like.

    Boateng fires wide from distance. Milan again showing their frustration when they would have been better served creating a better opportunity. Disappoiting from the <i>trequartista</i>.

    Milan waste the chance to break with a shocking ball from Zambrotta! Cambiasso's optimistic backheel in the Milan area meant the home side recovered the ball but it was wasted.

    For all of Milan's superior possession, they're failing to do anything of note with the ball.

53. Milan are certainly going to have to be more clinical in possession, because despite the fact they've seen far more of the ball, it's Inter that look more dangerous when they're going forward. Milan currently pose very little threat.

    Emmanuelson, who, it must be said, has an impressive engine, breaks through the middle but the chance is wasted with the lazy Ibrahimovic offside and barely strolling to get back into position...

112. Inter can now truly consider themselves to be back in the Serie A title race. That's a superb result for them and what a clinical, efficient performance it was from them.

113. Milan showed that, despite having the vast majority of possession, they lacked the initiative to break Inter down and, for all of their talent, lacked a coherent style of play tonight.

114. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic failed to impress in another big game...

115. Paul Ince post game: "I thought Inter played as a team." Opinions also being expressed that Alberto Aquilani was missed for Milan, tonight. It's a bad result for them, and Inter are now just five points behind second-placed AC Milan in fifth place. Juventus still top the table with a one point advantage over Milan.
