Newcastle United – Sunderland

1. Michael Owen's absence prompts one of four changes. While Owen's hamstring injury sees him ruled out, Nolberto Solano is back in the team for the first time since returning to the Magpies at the end of the transfer window, the Peru winger now recovered from a thigh injury with Amdy Faye making way to the bench. Turkey international Emre is handed his first start since August 28 after a recent hamstring problem, replacing Lee Bowyer who sustained a knee injury last week.

2. In contrast, Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy names an unchanged side from last week's 3-1 Stadium of Light defeat to Manchester United.

   Sunderland midfielder Whitehead goes into the book after 37 seconds for a nasty challenge from behind on Emre. It's going to be tasty!

   Emre's back up after a bit of treatment - not the challenge you want in your first start for almost two months!

   If there isn't a red card in this game I'll be amazed, the tackles are flying in and there's barely been a pass

   The atmosphere is electic at St James', both sets of supporters praying for the bragging rights at work tomorrow morning

   Free-kick to Sunderland around 25 yards out in a central position. Whitehead fancies it, Welsh is there too. It's the former who goes for the shot, though it's always rising over the bar

   Another free-kick to Sunderland, with Ameobi penalised. It's lofted into the area from deep but Taylor heads to safety

    N'Zogbia brings it out but gets caught in two minds and Nosworthy makes the tackle

    Some pressure from Newcastle. Carr looks bright down the right and finds Solano to hook into the area. Shearer nods back to Ameobi - but the young forward has to stretch to get the ball and it's easy for Davis

    The Magpies just beginning to get up a head of steam now. Can they grab the opener?

    Shearer delivers a fine first time ball onto the right flank... except there's no black and white shirt there... it would have been good!

    Emre collects and is allowed to run at the Sunderland defence. There's still not challenge so the Turkish international takes a shot - which Davis has to palm away in the air

    Free-kick to Newcastle on the half-way line. Ramage punts it into the box, Boumsong wins the flick on and the ball skids inches past the post as Taylor tried to get on the end of it

    Mick McCarthy's bellowing down on the touchline. He knows the home side and beginning to get on top

    Great movement of the ball as Solano, Emre and N'Zogbia link up. It's N'Zogbia who delivers a low ball across the six-yard box but Davis does well to claim ahead of the sliding Ameobi

    Solano looks for Carr down the right, there's just too much on the pass which enables Hoyte to guide the ball behind for a goal-kick

    The atmosphere's gone decidedly flat now, Newcastle unable to find a route into the box to test the Sunderland goalkeeper

    Carr delivers from the right, only for Caldwell, the former Newcastle trainee, to get the flick back to Davis

    Parker trips Lawrence and it's a set-piece for Sunderland around 30 yards out, just to the right of centre. It's delivered into the box but headed clear with ease

    It's pumped straight back in, Boumsong leaves it without realising Gray is behind him - who just fails to make contact six yards out

    Solano is allowed time on the ball, he finds Ameobi with a neat pass on the edge of the box. Ameobio turns for the shot...

    Oooh! Davis has to get down low to his left to keep out the shot which was arrowing into the bottom corner, and a defender hacks clear. Close from Ameobi

    Emre is brought down from behind, and Miller becomes the second player to enter the book

    Ameobi does well to find Solano just inside the box, the ball just gets away from his as his control lets him down and the chance to have a crack is gone

    It's now a pretty even game, neither side really able to gain total control

    Shearer tries to set Parker though the middle, but the former England striker was offside from the original pass to him

    Shearer collect in the left corner of the box. There's no challenge which invites the curling effort into the opposite post - but it goes agonisingly wide

    The Newcastle fans are incensed as N'Zogbia puts the ball out so Welsh can get attention, he was clipped by Parker. Souness is not best pleased either

    Referee Styles had allowed the advantage after the foul on Welsh, but he takes the chance to book Parker when the play breaks down. It was never a yellow card

    Shearer looks for the unmarked Solano on the edge of the box - it's a shocking pass when the Peruvian would have been in and Hoyte clears

    Now Solano is penalised, for a foul on Whitehead.

    Nosworthy is caught napping by Ameobi, he breaks forward and finds Shearer with the square ball - but Nosworthy redeems himself with a diving block as the powerful shot came in

    Now Carr delivers from the right. Davis gets in a tangle with Breen and it loops to N'Zogbia - who probably cleared the stand with his shot

    Pressure building from Newcastle as they win a corner on the left. Shearer and Caldwell get a talking to for a bit of handbags before Solano delivers a high ball - it's another corner

    Emre takes from the left, and finds the head of Ameobi...

    Emre's fine hanging corner found Ameobi completely unmarked ten yards out, and the England Under-21 international powered a fantastic header into the opposite corner past a helpless Davis

    Lawrence picks up the ball 25 yards out, he dinks inside and tries his luck...

    Newcastle's lead lasted just two minutes as a swerving right-foot shot from Lawrence drifted away from Given and into the corner of the net - Lawrence's first Premiership goal

    Newcastle look to put things right. Carr's cross is too deep, but N'Zogbia manages to hook it back into the danger zone for Ameobi...

    It's all gone goal crazy! N'Zogbia did well to get it back into the danger zone, and there was Ameobi with the stooping header into the bottom left-hand corner. Advantage Newcastle again!

    Free-kick to Sunderland on the left wing. Can they level again? Lawrence curls it to the edge of the six-yard box but this time it's Ameobi at the back to head away and the Magpies survive

    Sunderland are looking to get back on level terms before the break, no letting that second Ameobi goal get them down

    Elliott collects 25 yards out. He's done well here up against Parker, skips back inside of Boumsong and goes for the shot on his left...

    Four goals in seven minutes and you have to give great credit to the spirit of Sunderland. Now they look like getting a third before the interval!

    Sunderland break again, an error from Boumsong allowed Elliott to turn and shoot in the box, and Given has to get down well to tip around the post

    Lawrence tricks his way into the area and goes to the deck under the challenge from N'Zogbia. The Sunderland man is looking for the penalty, but he's very unlucky not to get it as N'Zogbia dangled his leg out

    Miller cuts in from the right and finds Lawrence in the box once more. It's a fine shot, and it's beaten Given...

    ...Taylor gets back on the line to cut out the shot, so close to a leveller. Sunderland are not finished yet!

     Faye is robbed in midfield - the crowed groan - and Arca gets down the flank. He overhits his cross but it could have been much more costly

     The Sunderland fans are the ones in fine voice despite being behind. Much anxiety among the home supporters

     Sunderland were the better team, and deserved at least a point out of the game, but it wasn't to be
