2. Danny Murphy makes his first trip back to Anfield as he faces his old side in need of an improvement in both performance and results. And you know what happens when players play against their former teams, don't you.

   In foul weather conditions Charlton make a complete mess of a defensive corner. A slippy surface is going to have an impact on this game.

   From the turn-over of possession Garcia feeds Finnan out wide and his return cross picks out the Spainiard whoes header is poor.

   Riise gives a master-class in why you should be two footed as a raking pass from Alonso picks him out on the corner of the box. His control takes him inside Young and the goal at his mercy yet his need to use his left foot allows the defender to get back and tackle. If Michael Owen can learn to use his left, Riise should be able to do the same with his right.

   Two early chances have gone begging for the home side.

   Charlton are their own worse enemies here. Sloppy ball from Murphy conceded possession to arcia in the middle. His poor chip forward is spooned in the air by Fortune allowing him to stride forward and volley at goal. Only a great save from Kiely keeps the scores level.

   Corner falls to Riise outside the box but he drags the shot wide. charlton living on the edge here.

   Baros and Cisse try to link up with short passes but, as it has been so often this season, they don't link up well.

    How did that stay out? Hyypia finds acres of space in the box to attack a corner and it is all the way a goal until Murphy gets his body in the way on the line.

    It's all Liverpool at the moment and Charlton can't get out of their own half yet.

    A measured ball forward from Alonso picks out Riise but his cross is not equal to the pass he received.

    Free-kick about 30 yards out dead entre for Liverpool is driven low and hard by Cisse and comes flying out off the inside of the right hand post. Vicious shot that almost deserved a goal. It maybe got a little deflection on the way through.

    More profligacy from the side in red as Baros gets onto a flick on about six yards out but directs his header wide when he really should have done better. Liverpool could - and really, really should - be three up by now.

    Frenetic opening with only one team in it.

    Riise's lack of a right foot once more lets his side down. Cutting across the 18 yard line he really should have hit one but instead tried to square to Garcia with Baros getting in the way.

    Liverpool playing a bit of keep ball at the back, working it forward patiently.

    Unbelievable! Liverpool spurn yet another sitter. This time Baros is free of a marker and picked out in front of goal about 10 yards out but fluffs it off his shoulder to the hands of Kiely.

    Liverpool have not scored a headed goal all season in the Premiership. It is not hard to see why.

    Baros finds space out on the right touchline and drives towrds the byline, head down, as is his want. Perry tracks him all the way and puts in a perfectly timed challenge before mopping up and clearing the danger. Wonderful tackle.

    It is difficult to stress just how one sided this game is.

    Charlton string a few passes together for the first time in the game but a poor touch from Lisbie puts a swift end to that.

    After the blistering opening the game has hit a bit of a lull which is bound to suit the visitors more than the hosts.

    Break in play as Perry receives treatment after a crunching tackle on Cisse.

    Charlton sportingly put the ball out as Garcia is prostrate after an off the ball clash with Heridarsson.

    A rare break forward from Charlton ends with a slightly less uncommon poor first touch from Lisbie.

    Sting has really gone out of this game now.

    Liverpool have now completely lost their dominance of the midfield area and Stuart, Murphy and Holland are getting more and more into the game.

    Rommedahl gets shifting for the first time in the game and puts over a deep cross to Bartlett but the Liverpool defence were wise to it and sprang an effective offside trap.

    Charlton seeing more of the ball now, the platform for which has been a number of solid tackles from Perry and Heridarsson who are now getting the better of Cisse and Baros more often than not.

    Liverpool corner from the right is poor and ends up back with Traore, the furthest man back.

    Traore broke up a Charlton attack and steamed forward before releasing Cisse on the left. His angled shot across the face of goal does not trouble Kiely.

    Another loose ball from Murphy sets Cisse off down the middle with only one thought in his mind. His shot from distance is blocked but breaks to Baros. With Cisse now alone in front of goal Baros tries his luck from a tight angle much to the annoyance of his strike 'partner'. They really don't look like a pair who can work well together despite their obvious individual talents.

    Liverpool still forcing the game but Charlton look a lot more comfortable in dealing with them.

    Traore looks to have got round the back of the Charlton defence for a second before another saving tackle from Heridarsson blocks his path.

    Kikland - a spectator up to now - makes a hash of a high cross under pressure from Bartlett. Seemed to be litle in it but, as ever, the goalkeeper gets cotton wool protection from the referee and is awarded a free kick.

    Another period of midfield nothingness as the match rather limps towards half-time.

    Liverpool work it well down the right through the busy Garcia before Hamann sends over an aimless cross that is easily dealt with.

    Cisse shows his amazing turn of pace to chase down a lost cause and centre well for Garcia to get in between two defenders and hit a snap shot that he didn't really connect with. Great industry from Cisse but a difficult chance for Garcia in the end.

    Half-time arrives with the score, miraculously, at 0-0.

    Liverpool will be wondering why this game has not been wraped up by now. I can tell them: their finishing has been woeful. No, worse than that, embarrassing. They spurned four clear cut chances and wasted countless other opportunities. The half opened with the home side ripping through the visitors at ease but as the game wore on and the frantic pace eased off, Charlton managed to get a foot hold. Liverpool should still win this but if they don't they will only have themselves to blame.

    No changes at the break as Charlton Kick-off the second-half.

    A back pass to Keily gives Baros a sniff of getting there before the goalkeeper. Perry made sure the outcome of the race by blocking Baros but the referee sees no harm in it.

    Cracking run down the wing and fierce cross from Cisse but no one in a red shirt can capitalise on his good work.

    Something of a convoluted free-kick routine from Liverpool ends with Alonso lofting in a deep ball that is just too high for the leaping Baros. Does enough to distract Kiely who palms wide for a corner.

    Corner breaks to Risse - on his left foot so no excuses this time - on the edge of the box but he drags it wide.

    Another corner gives Risse another bite of the cherry and he makes no mistake. Left-footed shot from the edge of the box breaks the deadlock. 1-0 Liverpool.

    Short corner to Cisse, who delivered a good ball over but Alonso's goal bound header was blocked and cleared but only as far as Risse. Controlled volley was perfectly executed. He may only have one foot, but when he puts it to use like that it really doesn't matter.

    Mood lifted for the home side now and Cisse is encouraged to drive at the Charlton defence. Hits the byline and crosses but the ball went out. Very positive though.

    Lisbie wastes a good position for Charlton by limply trying to skip past Hyypia. The big Fin in no trouble at all.

    An air shot from Garcia in the middle of the pitch concedes possession and then a Carragher shove on Lisbie puts Liverpool in more danger - a free kick deep on the left.

    Murphy swings one towrds the back post but the Charlton players en masse fail to attack it. Very strange.

    Riise stumbles through two tackles before finally being dispossessed by the third just as he was entering shooting range.

    Another sweeping forward move from Liverpool results in an attempt on goal from Cisse when he had team-mates piling into the box.

    Lovely control from Garcia as he tried to bring down a high ball and spin past Fortune in the box but the defender spooned it behind for a corner.

    Kiely does well to beat Hyypia to the ball with a clenched fist as the corner is swung in at pace.

    Liverpool keep the move going and Garcia becomes the latest in a long list of players to have wasted simple chances. Ball across the goal took a deflection in a crowded box and fell to him with the goal at his mercy. He put it over the bar from eight yards.

    Substitution for Liverpool sees the goal scorer Risse make way for Harry Kewell who seems to have been warming up for the entire game.

    A slip by Perry followed by the same from Lisbie allowed Baros to skip round the pair of them and cut back to Finnan with time to measure his shot. It is not too far away but curls outwards from the far post a fraction too much from a liverpool point of view.

    Charlton have brought on Franny Jeffers for the ineffectual Rommedahl. As you might expect, he is not greeted with warmth from the home crowd.

    Deliberate hand ball from Jeffers does not receive a yellow card despite the verciferous protestations from the Liverpool fans.

    Jeffers finally tests the patience of the referee and, much to the delight of the Anfield crowd, he is booked for a late shove on Harry Kewell. Silly boy.

    Charlton make a second substitution as Jason Euell replaces Bartlett.

    Euell's first contribution is to send the ball high into the stands behind the goal his side are attacking. To be fair it was worth a go as the ball broke to him just inside the box and he swiveled and hit it on the volley. First Charlton shot for a while at least.

    Cisse picked out Baros in the box but while he twisted and turned looking for the angle he got crowded out by a host of defenders.

    2-0 to Liverpool as Garcia surely ends the game and secures the points for his team with an sensational shot from distance.

    Alonso fed his compatriot in the centre with a short pass and, with the Charlton defenders backing off, the little Spaniard saw his chance and, from 25 yards, beat Kiely all ends up with a perfectly placed drive into the top right hand corner. Quality strike.

    Second substitution for Liverpool sees Baros, who has worked hard but should really have made the score-sheet, make way for Florent Sinama-Pongolle.

    Jeffers looks to be free in on goal as a ball over the top lands at his feet but, just as he was struggling to control it, the flag is raised for offside.

    Final throw of the dice from Alan Curbishley. Lisbie leaves the field and is replaced by Bryan Hughes.

    Another lung bursting run down the right flank from Cisse ends with a powerful centre that no one can make contact with.

    Sinama-Pongolle seemed to have made a perfectly timed run across the Charlton back line to receive a diagonal Kewell through ball but is flagged offside when one on one with Kiely. He can consider himself unlucky there.

    Huge raking ball into the left corner flag from Garcia sees Kewell chasing with Young. The result is a corner and Kewell crashing into the advertising hoardings. A few choice words between the two players sees an intervention from the referee but no cards.

    Corner is a poor one and comes to nothing.

    Garcia finds himself in oceans of space in the Charlton half with only Sinama-Pongolle for support. Signposts the pass and Young is able to simply step into its path and clean up.

    A foul on Jeffers from Hamann sets up another Murphy free kick curled to the back post. This time his teammates are more alert to it but are still unable to capitalise on what was a decent ball.

    Fianl Liverpool substitution. Off goes Traore and on comes the youngster Stephen Warnock.

    Garcia nearly outdoes his own earlier strike. Long arcing ball evades everyone except the Spaniard who, from a very acute angle, hits a first time volley that flashes just wide of the far post. Would have been a spectacular one.

    Barring anything outrageous happening in the last couple of minutes Liverpool are heading for a victory they comfortably deserve.

    Charlton, to their credit, are still trying to play there way towards goal rather than just lump it in but the game is already lost.

    Liverpool enjoy a passing move the full length of the pitch - going backwards though - as they just run the final minute of the clock down.

    Final whistle sounds and it has been a good day's work for Liverpool as they beat Charlton by 2 goals to nil.

    The game exploded into action with Liverpool dominating in every department. Chances came and went and, for a while, it looked like they might live to regret some horrendous misses. However, two wonderful strikes from distance settled the game in the way it was always going to go. Liverpool were good, Charlton were poor and two nil is not far short of a fair result.

    Liverpool's home record in the Premiership remains unblemished whilst one point from fifteen on their travels for Charlton, with some heavy beatings into the bargin, is the reason they are in the bottom half tonight.
