Chelsea make three changes to the team which beat Fulham on Saturday. Hernan Crespo fails to recover from the calf injury he suffered in training on Monday so Adrian Mutu returns. Claude Makelele and Scott Parker bolster the midfield at the expense of Geremi and Jesper Gronkjaer.

Arsenal have their usual formidable look about them as manager Arsene Wenger stated his intentions with an attacking line-up. That means Freddie Ljungberg returns in place of Gilberto Silva as the only change to the team which beat Bolton at the weekend.

It will be Chelsea to kick-off at Stamford Bridge, with Duff and Mutu

Arsenal start well, Lauren looks for Ljungberg down the line but Bridge is across to make the interception

Parker is tripped by Pires and it's a free-kick on the right - a chance to get it into the box

Duff floats it in, but he fails to get enough loft and it's headed to safety by Edu

Ljungberg wins the corner off Bridge. Pires takes from the right and it's Bridge to flick it away

Bridge looks for Duff over the top, Lauren does well to watch the Irishman's run and make the tackle

It's an even start, neither side taking the game by the scruff of the neck

Lauren picks on Bergkamp on the edge of the box, Bergkamp tries to find the corner but it lacks power and Ambrosio can take down low to his left

Pires gets clear of the defence but Ambrosio is equal to it - the flag is up anyway so it wouldn't have counted

Bridge is felled by Lauren trying to latch on to Mutu's give and go. It's a free-kick right on the angle of the box

Mutu takes, curling it in low towards to goalkeeper. Not enough blue shirts make a move to latch onto the ball and Lehmann is able to collect

Free-kick to Arsenal, Ljungberg swings it in from the right, Campbell rises to win the header but puts it wide. He rose highest at the back stick and should have at least hit the target

Vieira is caught by Makelele in centre-field. Free-kick

The tackles are start to fly in now as the teams get the measure of each other. This could get tasty.

Cole gets away down the left but is tracked well by Parker, Coel has to rush his cross and puts it straight out of play

Toure shows great strength to hold off Mutu and win the throw-in

Gudjohnsen trips Toure, and that'll be a free-kick

The ganme's sloppy at the moment, neither team able to get into their stride and take control

Duff strides foward and looks to get clear - only for Toure to get back with a superb sliding tackle

Arsenal have enjoyed more of the possession and if either side have shaded it they have - only just though

Lampard tries to find Mutu at the back stick, Lehmann sees the danger early and comes out to collect

Pires looks for Ljungber on the edge of the box - it's fired at him giving the Swede little chance of bringing under control

Bridge tries to find Duff down the line, Lauren gets in first

Mutu gets onto a loose ball in the box ahead of Campbell - he wants the corner but strangely is penalised for a foul on the England defender

The impressive Bride latches onto a one-two with Mutu to get into the box - but his touch lets him down and Campbell hacks clear

Suddenly Parker is played in, he opts against the first time shot and Lehmann managed to get down and claim the cut-back

Chelsea improving now, can they go on and enjoying a spell of pressure now?

Parker tries to play it out wide to Gallas, but he holds onto it too long and had to rush it - and the put it out for a goal-kick

Lauren tries to find Henry down the right, but his pass takes a defelection of Terry's ankle to take it away from the Frenchman

Mutu win the ball of Ljungberg - but it's a tackle from behind and the referee blows up

Mutu gets away from Toure on the left, but he has three red shirts around him and only one option in the box. He tries to play it across but only finds Lehmann

It's been a very competitive encounter, although there's been little to write home about in either penalty area. It's a very tight affair

Edu finds Bergkamp coming into the box on the left, the Dutchman shoots and Ambrosio has to claim at the second attempt as it swerves through the air

Free-kick to Chelsea. Bridge plays it into the box from deep only for Campbell to rise and head clear with ease

A woeful cross-field ball from Toure gifts the ball back to Chelsea in the Arsenal half

Parker wins the corner off Cole. Duff with take from the right side, and Vieira can clear only as far as Parker. He feeds in Gallas and can pick out Gudjohnsen at the back stick - who's shot is deflected behind

This time the corner is taken short - only for Desailly to then be penalised for a push

Mutu wins a corner off Campbell. Mutu takes but fails to clearer the first man - Pires

Parker is skips in down the right only for the flag to go up for a throw-in - the whole of the ball certainly had not crossed the line

Chelsea happy to pass the ball around the back now

Chelsea push forward, Bridge superbly harries Ljungberg inside his own area to force the hurried clearance

Parker brings it froward now, and bends it in for Mutu - who flicks it over the bar with his forehead

Desailly brings down Ljungberg, free-kick

Pires chips it to the back stick, only for Desailly gets his head to it first to clear

Lampard and Pires have words as the teams go off - clearly something happened between the two

It was a very tight first 45, with very little in the way of goalscoring opportunities. Sol Campbell's header is the closest either side has come - but there has been very little else

Arsenal kick-off the second period with Henry and Bergkamp

Henry has been very quiet so far in this match, barely worth a mention - Arsenal will be hoping for more from their star man

Henry gets some space on the left, Terry reads his cross and clears

Gudjohnsen looks for the ghosting run of Parker into the box but it's Henry, off all people, who tracks the run and makes the interception

Lauren trips Duff, free-kick to Chelsea right by the corner flag on the left. Mutu flots it in, Campbell heads clear

Arsenal look to break but Makelele does brilliantly to rob Pires. He feed Lampard for the shot, which is defelected off Campbell behind for a corner

Duff takes the corner, and Lehmann collects at the second attempt

Arsenal come forward now. Henry collects on the left and tries a trademark curling shot into the opposite corner - Ambrosio reads it well to claim

Lampard plays a hopeful ball up front to Gudjohnsen, but it's too strong. Lehmann comes out to clear his lines with Gudjohnsen closing down - but Lehmann's clearance hits the striker...

GOAL!!!!!

Lehmann's clearance was well blocked by Gudjohnsen, and the Icelandic striker showed great composure to slide it home from a tight angle with the goal empty. Advantage Cheslea!

Edu tries a hurried shot, which is fired well over the bar

Parker feeds in Gudjohnsen in the box on the right, two blue shirts are waiting unmarked in the box if Gudjohnsen can pick them out - but Toure gets back to put it behind

Duff's corner only finds gloves of Lehmann

Mutu holds it up well and squares it to Lampard - his powerful drive it beaten away by Lehmann only as far as Duff - but the German stopper stays big to save again

Chelsea are dominant now, looking for a second to really put them in the driving seat in this tie

Cole takes possession on the left, looks up and floats it in for Pires...

GOAL!!!!

Cole's chipped pass is fantastic, Pires' is run is superb and the header is sublime. No chance for Ambrosio and from being under pressure Arsenal now have an away goal

After all that hard work Chelsea find themselves in trouble - but will they react better than they did at Highbury in the Premiership?

Duff fells Lauren, free-kick for the visitors

Pires plays in the inswinger, Ambrosio's punch is clear but as Henry's lobbed shot is played in Campbell is given offside

Pires brings down Gallas on the right-flank, but the ball played in by Parker is again straight at the goalkeeper

Makelele is shown the yellow card for a deliberate handball as Edu looked to play it through - looked a harsh decision. Free-kick 35 yards out

Henry goes for the audacious shot but it's always rising and is way over

Pires feeds in Cole, Desailly charges down the attempted cross

Arsenal now have control, the goal knocking the stuffing out of the home side. They need to find more urgency to their game now

Duff and Mutu link up well, it's Mutu who takes the shot only to see it blocked by Toure

Arsenal passing it around in the deep now, this result would suit them

Lauren is caught out by Lampard, who swicthes it to Duff. The Irishman tries to get to the byline but has to settle for the corner off Toure

Duff takes the corner himself, only for Campbell to head clear with ease

Chelsea are trying hard for a second, but seem to lack that cutting edge to really open up the Arsenal rearguard

Another change for Arsenal now, Jose Antonio Reyes comes on for Freddie Ljungberg

Crespo sees his shot deflected behind for a corner, Chelsea need some quality now

Duff takes it but this time it's Vieira who heads away - again Chelsea fail to find one of their own men

Duff's cross flicks off the head of Toure for Gudjohnsen at the back stick, his shot is blocked by Pires for the corner

Chelsea win two corners in quick succession - and finally the ball lands in the arms of Lehmann

Lehmann tries to throw it long - Desailly cheekily puts a hand on the ball to force the error and gets a yellow card for his troubles

Gudjohnsen bursts forward, but takes it too far rather then look to release - Toure stays strong to make yet another fine challenge

Desailly brings down Vieira as he looks to burst through - the Frenchman has just been booked and he's off! Two yellows for Desailly and how must now regret knocking the ball out of Lehmann's hand

Pires feeds Henry, his shot on the turn is easy for Ambrosio down low

Chelsea make a change, sacrificing Eidur Gudjohnsen for Mario Melchiot

Corner to Chelsea. Duff takes again from the right, this time going short to Makelele - his cross is headed clear

Chelsea will be desperate to hold on to this with their ten men - they can't afford to go to Highbury with a defeat, and two away goals to make up

Chelsea have struggled to really create throughout, but they will have to at Highbury in the return

Henry's cross to Gilberto is intercepted and headed clear by Terry

Bridge crosses for Crespo, but his flicked effort is easy for Lehmann

The 1-1 scoreline was a fair reflection, but Chelsea will regret letting Arsenal grab a leveller when they were well on top

There wasn't a great deal of goal mouth action, and Arsenal would certainly have taken this scoreline before kick-off

Desailly will regret his stupid first booking - which eventually led to a red after the challenge on Vieira - which in the end has ruled him out of the return leg

It's not all over yet, but Chelsea now have to score at Highbury and hope they can overcome their hoodoo against Arsene Wenger's glory hunting Gunners
