   Diouf robs Geremi and powers down the wing but Bridge is quick to cover and cleverly back heels the ball off the attacker for a Chelsea throw

   Johnson whips in a decent looking cross to the six yard box but Hyypia is there to clear with his head

   Crisp passing in the middle of the pitch allows Lampard to find Johnson clear on the right wing. He beats Traore at left back but then fluffs the cross and the danger clears

    Heskey escapes the offside flag as a ball is played up to him but Gallas and Terry combine to muscle out the big striker before he can control. Gallas hurts himself in the process

    A couple of Liverpool corners in quick succession come to nothing.

    Gallas is back to full strength but Crespo is not so lucky and will make way early for Gudjohnsen

    Heskey twists and turns wide on the right to make room for a cross. It takes a deflection and spins across the six yard box just waiting for a touch but it goes for a corner

    Real chance for Chelsea from a Cole corner. Johnson escapes his marker and makes good contact though he is leaning backwards and the effort goes over the bar

    Match hotting up with some strong challenges in the middle of the pitch. Gallas gives away a foul deep in opposition territory

    Cudicini is forced into a dive to save a corner as Terry heads back to him under pressure

    Lampard arrows a ball towards Mutu that would have disected the Liverpool back line but for a timely intervention from Biscan

    Diouf plays a dangerous game trying to play away from his own box which is crowded. Lucky to get away from it and launches a ball up field to safety

    Mutu caught off-side on the wing in a position where he had no excuse as he was looking across the line.

    Chelsea beginning to take control of the midfield with Makelele and Geremi in particular winning their own battles

    Heskey receives the ball out wide after winning a header in the first place. A whipped low cross eveades the Chelsea back line before Cheyrou burries a shot into the net leaving Cudicini with no chance at all. Against the run of play it's 1-0 to Liverpool!

    Cole almost immeadiately puts Chelsea back on terms by firing a low drive inches away from Dudek's right hand post from 15 yards out

    Chelsea have plenty forward when Mutu lays of a square pass to Lampard who is free on the corner of the box. He makes a clean contact and the speed of the shot would probably have beaten Dudek had it not risen marginally over the bar.

    Diouf tries to win a free-kick on by the Chelsea corner flag but the referee is not fooled

    Dudek has to literally use his head as he races out of his area to beat Mutu to a long cross field pass

    Half-time comes with the score still 1-0 to the visitors. Chelsea have probably had the lion's share of the game but Liverpool's goal was a peach. Heskey up front alone working hard and a packed midfield seems to be a deliberate and - so far - effective ploy by the Reds. It will take something special from Chelsea to unlock Liverpools defence but they have done enough to suggest they are capable.

    Unusual period of possession from the visitors earns them a throw-in deep in Chelsea territory

    Mutu comes deep to find the ball, turns sharply and creates a shooting chance. His effort is block by a resolute Liverpool rear guard

    Heskey and Gallas involved in a bit of handbags. Heskey feels he is not getting enough protection and took the law into his own hands by giving Gallas a solid kick up the arse as the ball went out of play. A yellow card and a few stern words for Heskey and the game continues

    Gronkjaer looks to get round Traore on the right and seems to have before the defender stretches a leg and puts the Chelsea man off. Gronkjaer feels hard done by when he doesn't even get a corner for his efforts

    Poor clearance from Cudicini falls to Diouf who, despite wasting the impetus of the moment, wins a free-kick out by the right corner flag

    traore finds himself in unusual territory down the right flank level with the penalty area. His cross is understandably below par

    Double substitution for the reds. On comes Riise for Cheyrou and Luzi - making his Premiership debut - for Dudek.

    Yet another corner for Chelsea. Mutu is completely free a matter of yards out and -when he really should have scored - sees his header come back off the crossbar

    Surging run forward from Gallas takes Chelsea deep into the Liverpool half but the ball runs away from the defender

    Gronkjaer, who has looked dangerous since his introduction, continues to trouble the Liverpool defence by switching wings

    Terry accidentally catches Diouf (very slightly) in the face with a boot as the two slide off the pitch. The Senegal star is acting as if he has been slapped when in truth Terry's foot brushed the top of his head

    More handbags as Diouf squares up to Mutu who had accused him of play acting minutes before. After consulting with his linesman the referee takes action and the result is a second yellow for Diouf and he is off.

    Game is bubbling up as it enters the final five minutes. Luzi Makes a brave save by coming to the edge of his box and punching away from Mutu's head

    Heskey penalised for a challenge on Terry. Free kick comes to Grokjaer in the box and a goalbound effort is kept out by a fantastic Liverpool block

    Appeals for a penalty as Hyypia tangles with Mutu but the referee gets it right by giving nothing

    Same pair tangle again in the box and this time the appeal looks a little better founded but nothing is awarded by the referee once more

    Liverpool came with a game plan and despite more than a couple of scares it worked. A great first half goal and getting men behind the ball frustrated Chelsea on a night when they had possession, chances and the impetus but crucially no end product. Man of the match for me was the much maligned Heskey. Worked tirelessly alone up front and consistently got the better of Terry to offer a way out of pressure for the visitors. Cracking cross to set up Cheyro's goal as well.
