2. Today's Liverpool team: Dudek, Carragher, Henchoz, Hyypia, Riise, Kewell, Murphy, Biscan, Cheyrou, Owen, Heskey. And on the bench: Kirkland, Finnan, Baros, Diouf, Le Tallec.

3. And for Chelsea: Cudicini, Johnson, Terry, Desailly, Bridge, Gronkjaer, Geremi, Veron, Lampard, Duff, Gudjohnsen. Their subs: Hasselbaink, Joe Cole, Gallas, Ambrosio, Forssell.

4. Roman Abramovich is at Anfield to watch his new-look Chelsea, assembled at a cost of almost £75million.

5. No place for £15.8million signing Adrian Mutu because international clearance from the Italian Football Association has not arrived in time. But new boys Glen Johnson, Damien Duff, Geremi, Wayne Bridge and Juan Sebastian Veron start with Joe Cole on the bench.

6. Harry Kewell starts for Liverpool, but Gerard Houllier's other new signing, Steve Finnan, is only fit enough for the bench.

7. Jerzy Dudek is in goal despite Chris Kirkland's England call-up and Igor Biscan and Bruno Cheyrou are in midfield as a result of Steven Gerrard's suspension and injuries to Dietmar Hamann and Vladimir Smicer.

8. Referee Steve Bennett gets things underway and Chelsea kick off to a chorus of boos

    Harry Kewell on an early run which ends up with Danny Murphy hitting a low drive and a bringing a great save from Carlo Cudicini in the Chelsea goal

    Marcel Desailly tries to calm things down by taking his time on the ball before it is spread forwards. The Kop in great voice today - top atmosphere!

    Cudicini off his line quick there to smother the ball after Danny Murphy slotted a decent ball on the deck for Michael Owen to run onto.

    Frank Lampard and Juan Sebastian veron link up well in midfield, but the ball ends up with Liverpool's left back John Arne Riise

    Glen Johnson for Chelsea sends a ball down the right wing looking for Damien Duff, but Riise is there to clear the danger

    Veron muscles Owen off the ball in the middle of the park

    Chelsea build on the left with Jesper Gronkjaer, only for three Reds defenders to swap him and clear

    Liverpool's Sami Hypia tries to get the ball Owen, but it is too long

    A bright opening, end to end stuff, plenty of atmospher and a decent early chance

    Harry Kewell on the right wing has the ball, but only breifly before he is tackled by Wayne Bridge

    Igor Bistan using his mighty frame to good effect in his own half as Liverpool snuff out a half hearted attack

    Dudek releases the ball and it's soon with Owen at the other end of the pitch, but again Cudicini gathers

    Geremi on the ball in midfield, finds Johnson who spreads the ball across the back four as Chelsea build, but Murphy cuts in and wins the ball

    Desailly tackles Murphy and feeds it right towards Gronkjaer who crosses into the Liverpool penalty area, but Veron's chance is poor

    Lamaprd is the first player to get himself a booking, rightly yellow-carded for tackling Riise from behind

    Interesting formation for Chelsea who seem to be playing a 4-5-1 with Duff on the right and Gronkjaer on the left wing and Eidur Gudjohnsen as the lone striker

    Emile Heskey is ruled to have fouled John Terry - a bit harsh he just jumped early

    Bruno Cheyrou in the Liverpool midfield cuts out an errant pass but a quick ball to Heskey is too long

    Nice wide play on the left for Chelsea with Bridge, Veron and Gronkjaer but the final ball is too long

    A great cross field ball from Danny Murphy finds Owen in the penalty area but Cudicini is off his line quick enough to get a hand to the ball and spoil Owen's chance - Liverpool looking dangerous with the through pass

    Terry and Desailly are well aware that they are under threat - this time Heskey wins a corner of Terry - pressure building

    Murphy whips the ball in but Cudicini punches the ball as far as Lampard who clears

    The Reds just getting the better of things, winning the 50-50 balls. Harry Kewell motors past Terry on the right and tries a cheeky shot which fooled Cudicini only to flash just wide of the post!

    Shaven headed Owen looks very dangerous for Liverpool, clearly having benefitted from the summer break

    VERON SCORES FOR CHELSEA!!

    Gronkjaer whipped in an early ball from the right and Seba Veron lashed in a side-footed shot from just inside the penalty area to beat Dudek - Gugjohnsen looked offside, but the goal stands!

    At the other end Kewell nudges a ball to Owen who fires in a great shot. Cudicini parries it out for a corner

    Risse floats in the kick to the back post looking for Hypia, but his header is just wide

    Heskey tries to charge down a back pass from Desailly to his keeper, but some nifty Cudicini footwork just about saves the French defender's blushes

    Kewell is looking good for Liverpool, who despite the goal, are playing well

    Murphy threads a ball through to Owen on the edge of the penalty area, but it bounces awkwardly and the striker fails to control it

    Shocking play from the Chelsea striker who could have put the ball over Dudek or taken him on instead of hitting tamely into his body - lucky for the Reds, but bad from Chelsea

    At the other end a promising spell from Liverpool ends with the ball blazed over the bar, never really a clear goal scoring chance, but a shot on target was needed

    After an age of deliberation the three of them conspire to execute the worst freekick of the season so far. Kewell stepped over the ball for Murphy to hit it low into the wall. Rubbish.

    Hypia passes to Biscan who feeds it wide to Kewell, he gets it to Murphy who loses it and Chelsea send it up to Gronkjaer who is fouled by Stephane Henchoz - who is booked for a cynical tackle

    Duff whips in another freekick towards the back post but it is too high for Glen Johnson and its a goalkick

    It is headed clear by Veron but only as far as Kewell who on the edge of the area unleashes a great full volley, but it is just wide

    Gronkjaer feeds the ball to Johnson who knocks in a deep cross that finds Bridge on the opposite wing, Veron attempts an outrageous pass to Hasselbaink but he fails and Liverpool clear

    An hour gone and while Liverpool are edging the second half its Chelsea's goal that marks the two sides apart

    A dangerous cross from Heskey is cleared and Chelsea are soon on the attack with Hasselbaink racing towards the Liverpool goal, but Hypia clears to Dudek's relief

    An excellent move from Chelsea. Veron brought it forward finding Lampard who spread it wide to Bridge. He fired in a great cross on the ball but it was just too long for Duff.

    The Kop again bellow for a penalty, but the ball hit Wayne Bridges chest, not his hand

    Lampard collects a ball from Germei via Veron and 35 yards out fires in a venomous shot but Dudek saves. Corner ball.

    Duff fires the ball in and a pinball game ensues, a clear shot from Hasselbaink, but it out for a goal kick

    Murphy hoists the ball up to Owen, he passes to Kewell who crosses too deep but they win a throw

     A deserved win for Chelsea who looked the more dangerous over the 90 minutes, despite some good spells from Liverpool. And what a game for Hasselbaink, but will his winner be enough to gain him a starting place?
