Despite receiving an 8 month ban on Friday, Ferdinand starts at White Heart Lane; the ban doesn't start until the 12th of January. Darren Fletcher starts on the right for United and Paul Scholes will look to continue his great form after recently returning from a two month lay off. If United win today they will go top.

3. Spurs kick-off and possession is exchanged a few times in the middle of the pitch.

4. Gary Neville swings a lovely ball in from the right wing. Giggs beats the defence to it but his subtle touch goes just wide of the far upright

    Ferdinand is being booed everytime he touches the ball by a section of the home crowd but so far looks comfortable and composed

    Spurs are looking to break on the counter and did well through Robbie Keane. he played the ball wide to Dalmat who put a first time cross along the ground that is inches away from both Keane and Kanoute

    United in a period of keep ball as they look for a gap in a heavily populated Spurs defence

    Scholes released van Nistlerrooy with a cute diagonal ball. The Dutchman bore down on goal but a strong first touch gave him a difficult angle and, with Richards closing down, he couldn't beat Keller

    Carr is forced to give away a corner even though he had more time due to a lack of communication

    From the corner O'Shea manages to get a foot to it and, despite the presence of Carr on the line, the ball loops into the net for the opener. 1-0 United!

    From the restart Spurs have a half chance as Keane is put through. He tries to lob Howard but it is not struck cleanly enough and the big American is able to collect the ball

    Van Nistlerooy controls a good through ball but, hanging on the last defender he is caught narrowly off-side

    Early substitution for Spurs as a clearly unfit Anderton is taken off and replaced by Poyet

    A lay off from Keane gives Poyet a sight of goal and he puts an effort in on target, low and hard. The shot is goalbound until Horward gets down low to his left and makes a quality save

    A fanastic, quick passing move involving Scholes and Giggs puts van Nistlerooy through just on-side. In front of goal the Dutchman makes no mistake and calmly slots the ball past a helpless Keller to extend United's lead. 2-0

    Spurs, though guilty of some sloppy defending, still look good going forward and, after a few blocked shots, Dalmat fires just wide from the corner of the box

In the end United just had that bit more class than their hosts who, for all their decent attacking play, looked suspect at the back too often. United are top at Christmas
