Newcastle United – Bolton Wanderers

1. Newcastle fans will welcome the return of Nolberto Solano to the right wing for today's match against Bolton but possibly not that of Titus Bramble, back from suspension. He is partnered in defence by Craig Moore who was sent home from international duty with Australia in mid-week for missing a training session. So, well worth the journey.

2. Bolton go in to the game knowing a win could take them up to third place. They start the game with three strikers and will be looking to continue their recent good run of form. The seemingly ageless Gary Speed makes his return to the club he served so well.

3. Bolton line-up in their maroon away kit and Newcastle in their familar black and white stripes. England manager Steve McClaren in in attendance today and the likes of Scott Parker will be hoping to impress.

4. We're off and Emre gets back to dispossess Anelka. Duff is released down the left and he pulls it back to Solano who lays it back to Parker. The England man scuffs his shot somewhat though.

5. 1'

Bramble makes a firm challenge on Davies. No-nonsense defending there.

6. 3'

Emre is fouled by Speed who is not happy with the decision. Ramage then gets a cross in from the left after Martins ducks out of the way. Ameobi is unable to get a decent contact on it though and Bolton collect.

7. 4'

Campo's long throw finds the head of Anelka. Diouf follows up but Harper gathers.

8. 5'

Solano gifts Bolton the ball but Bramble this time goes for a nonsense approach as he scythes down Anelka needlessly in midfield and is lucky to escape a yellow card.

9. 6'

Moore hits a long one up to Martins who lays it back to Ameobi. His shot is poor and curls limply wide of the Bolton goal.

10. 8'

Martins wins the ball well from Hunt but when he swivels to shoot from twenty yards he hits his low effort well wide.

11. 9'

Emre is down clutching his knee after Campo falls in to him. He seems to be ok though and jogs off for some attention.

12. 11'

Martins got the ball stuck between his feet and was unable to get play moving from midfield.

13. 12'

Martins skies an effort high in to the stand behind Jaaskelainen's goal.

14. 13'

Duff and Ramage are wedged in on the left hand side but manage to win a throw. It goes short to Emre (who is ok) but he loses out to Kevin Davies.

15. 14'

Davies tries a long ball over the top to release Anelka but it is over-hit and Craig Moore is on hand to shepherd the ball to safety.

16. 15'

Bramble tries an ambitious fifty yard pass from defence towards Duff. It doesn't come off.

17. 16'

Speed's ball in towards Anelka is well met by Craig Moore and cleared to safety.

18. 16'

Newcastle are given a penalty after the linesman blows for a hand-ball by Faye. A bit harsh on Bolton but a penalty it is.

19. 17'

GOAL- Ameobi sends Jaaskelainen the wrong way and strokes home the opening goal. Newcastle are somewhat fortuitously given the lead.

20. 19'

Gary Speed is told to calm down a bit by the referee and he was the most vocal at showing his disapproval with the penalty decision.

21. 20'

Carr attacks down the right and tries to lift the ball over Campo. The ball strikes his midfriff but the Newcastle fans wanted another penalty. Which is just greedy.

22. 22'

Faye fouls Ameobi and Newcastle have a free-kick thirty yards from goal.

23. 23'

Emre plays it to Carr whose effort is poor and the free-kick is wasted.

24. 24'

Some fine wing play from Duff but his cross does not match the close ball control. Still, Newcastle have a throw deep in Bolton's half.

25. 25'

They fail to make anything of it but come again through Emre. Duff eventually hits a better cross this time towards Martins but he is crowded out by two Bolton defenders.

26. 26'

Scott Parker is penalised for a foul on Campo.

27. 26'

Kevin Davies cross is headed to safety by Craig Moore.

28. 27'

Diouf tries to take on three Newcastle defenders on the left wing but one of them, Stephen Carr, takes the ball from him.

29. 28'

Free-kick to Newcastle on the far side. Emre floats it in but Jaaskelainen punches it away.

30. 30'

Duff's deflected shot brings a corner for Newcastle.

31. 31'

Emre takes it but Faye heads the ball away before Craig Moore is penalised for a foul.

32. 32'

Campo hits a wasteful free-kick well over the heads of his strikers and behind for a Newcastle goal-kick.

33. 33'

Nolan's poor pass gives Newcastle a throw-in. A needless gift by the Bolton man.

34. 34'

Harper makes an excellent double save, first from his own man as Scott Parker got back to help out as Anelka threatened. The ball then breaks to Kevin Davies but Harper gathers himself and is able to parry the ball away. The Newcastle crowd break out in to "There's only one Stevie Harper" to show their gratitude.

35. 36'

Nolan totally mis-hits a ball played in to him in the Newcastle box when he really should have at least troubled Harper.

36. 38'

Parker loses out to Ben Haim but Newcastle get the ball back. Duff's ball in is played back across goal and Ramage comes racing in to the box. From six yards he blasts his shot over the bar when it would have been easier to score. A waste.

37. 40'

Davies hits a ball high and hopeful in to the Newcastle box but it is over-hit and goes behind for a goal-kick.

38. 41'

Some nice build up play from Bolton but Bramble is able to break up the move and clear his lines.

39. 43'

Nice one-two between Duff and Ramage but when the ball comes in Bolton are able to break. At the other end Solano is booked for a late trip on Speed.

40. 43'

Campo again over-hits the ball and Newcastle are grateful for the goal-kick with half-time fast approaching.

41. 44'

Duff releases Martins on the left who elects to cross when perhaps he should have attacked the Bolton defenders. His cross is poor and Bolton get it away.

42. 45'

Scott Parker does well to get back and block Nicky Hunt's cross.

43. 45'

HALf TIME - Pretty uninspiring stuff in all honesty. Newcastle have the linesman to thank for their lead following a controversial penalty decision, although on balance of play Glenn Roeder's men probably deserve to be in front.

44. 45'

Newcastle resume the match and straight away punt it up to Jaaskelainen. Which was nice of thm.

45. 46'

The Bolton keeper's second touch is not so straighforward though. From his clearance Martins manages to latch on to the ball after some dithering in the Bolton defence and his shot needs a great save from Jaaskelainen to keep it out.

46. 47'

Solano lays the ball off nicely in to the path of Carr. It all came from a great fifty yard pass from Bramble.

47. 48'

A fine last ditch challenge from Ramage prevents Bolton troubling Steve Harper. Some concerted pressure from Bolton has brought a corner.

48. 49'

Diouf swings it in and Harper comes to punch it away firmly.

49. 50'

Duff and Ramage show some good understanding down the left before the latter's ball in to the penalty area is cleared.

50. 51'

Jaaskelainen comes to punch a high ball away but Newcastle come again. They have a throw wide on the left.

51. 52'

Bolton get it back but not for long. Faye is forced to concede a thrown and Newcastle are not letting Bolton settle anywhere on the pitch.

52. 53'

Bramble heads the ball out for a Bolton throw. Campo plays a long one in but this time Ramage is on hand to clear.

53. 54'

GOAL - Nicolas Anelka gets in behind Stephen Carr who is unable to back pedal to get to a high ball from Meite. The Frenchman plays a cross in to the penalty area and Diouf hits it home true when Bramble should have been closer to him to make a challenge.

54. 56'

GOAL - Bolton have scored again. Davies wins a high ball against three Newcastle defenders and Diouf is presented with a gift from five yards to head the ball past Harper. Poor defending once more from the home team.

55. 58'

The last two minutes has silenced all but a small section of St James Park. The Bolton fans are now in full voice.

56. 59'

Gary Speed is booked for a late tackle on Carr.

57. 60'

When the free-kick comes in Ameobi fails to get a touch to the ball when he was in a great position.

58. 60'

At the other end Davies lob clearly hits Damien Duff's arm in the Newcastle penalty area. This time no penalty is awarded much to big Sam's chagrin.

59. 61'

Bolton have a free-kick thirty yards from the Newcastle goal. Gary Speed strikes it firmly but straight at the Newcastle wall.

60. 62'

A great run from a re-invigorated Anelka wins a throw for his team near the Newcastle penalty area. When they play it back in to Newcastle's penalty area Carr hits it behind for a corner.

61. 63'

The corner is poor though and Newcastle have the goal-kick.

62. 64'

Moore has to scamper back to cover Davies' run and concede another throw.

63. 65'

Now Newcastle regain possession and try to build something. Solano's through ball finds Ameobi but his shot is blocked.

64. 66'

Solano comes off for Charles N'Zogbia.

65. 67'

N'Zogbia's first touch is positive and he takes on the Bolton midfield but his ball forward is cut out and Bolton advance up the park. They have a free-kick after Ramage fouls Diouf near the corner flag.

66. 68'

Speed plays the free-kick low to the near post but Diouf can not control the ball and Newcastle have the free-kick.

67. 69'

Anelka is fouled and Bolton take a quick one. Kevin Davies is blown for offside when he was clearly being played on by Stephen Carr. Another poor decision from the linesman on that side.

68. 70'

Diouf is writhing around on the floor which usually means there is nothing wrong with him. He has been booked for diving and over-reacting to a challenge from Emre who is also shown a yellow.

69. 72'

Campo hits it in to the Newcastle penalty area and after Moore misses the ball, Bramble is the model of cool to chest it back to Harper in the Newcastle goal.

70. 73'

Anelka releases Davies down the right who wins a corner.

71. 73'

Speed takes it but the referee blows for a free-kick to Newcastle before anyone can reach the ball.

72. 74'

Diouf, in lots of space, tries to roll the ball over to Davies. He can't but Bolton have a throw near the penalty area.

73. 75'

Campo's long throw is eventually dealt with and Newcastle have a goal-kick.

74. 76'

Ramage's high ball finds the head of Ben Haim who guides it way from the Bolton penalty area.

75. 77'

Diouf tries a bit of virtuoso trickery out on the right but is crowded out.

76. 78'

Anelka drags Stephen Carr first one way then the other before hitting a fine shot from twenty yards out which just skids wide. He made the opportunity for himself from nothing and really, Newcastle should have not allowed him to get the effort in on goal.

77. 79'

The Newcastle crowd are, understandably, growing more and more edgy and each stray pass is greeted with groans of despair. If anything Bolton look as if the combination of Anelka and Diouf could grab another goal from this now stretched Newcastle defence.

78. 81'

Duff tries a bicycle kick which looks as if it was intended to be a pass but ends up in the hands of Jaaskelainen.

79. 82'

Emre hits a blistering shot from thirty yards which curls just wide.

80. 82'

That is Emre's last contribution as Glenn Roeder, leaving it late, brings on Giuseppe Rossi.

81. 84'

Faye tracks back to shepherd the ball to Jaaskelainen as Ameobi threatened on the left.

82. 86'

Ramage plays a poor cross in from the left and Bolton will be in no rush to take this goal-kick.

83. 87'

Diouf comes off with boos ringing in his ears, not for the first time. He is replaced with Stelios Giannakopoulus.

84. 88'

Parker's cross strikes Nolan and Newcastle have a late corner.

85. 89'

The corner from Duff is poor but he gets the ball back and has a second chance. This time he loses it and Bolton break.

86. 90'

Four minutes of added time to be played.

87. 90'

Newcastle continue to press. They have a corner on the other side now after Carr is tackled. the corner is terrible though and N'Zogbia's cross goes straight behind for a goal-kick.

88. 90'

Ramage plays a long throw in to Bolton's box. Martins flicks it on but there is no-one in a Newcastle shirt there to grasp the opportunity.

89. 90'

Nolan hacks down Parker and is booked for a professional foul. You get the feeling big Sam won't mind that one.

90. 90'

FULL-TIME: Newcastle leave the pitch to loud boos, Bolton leave St James Park with all three points thanks to Diouf's quick-fire brace. They move back up to third place whereas Newcastle stay in fifteenth.
