3. If Portugal win they go through, if Iran lose they go out. Simple as that.

4. The teams are on the pitch, the anthems are playing and it's moments until this Group D match kicks-off...

   Iran, in all white, get the game underway - kicking from right to left. Portugal are wearing their port coloured kit.

6. 2'

   Figo has started on the right with Ronaldo on the left, but I'm sure they will switch. Iran have packed the defence.

7. 3'

   Iran hoof the ball forward down the flank. It's nowhere near anybody - hope that isn't a sign of things to come.

8. 4'

   Nosrati attempts to link with Mandanchi down the left flank but with no joy. Both teams are probing at the moment.

9. 5'

   Ronaldo steals the ball deep in the Iran half. Maniche, who could be carrying a few extra pounds, swivels and shoots high and wide from outside the area.

10. 6'

    Carvalho cuts out a through-ball intended for Hashemian and Portugal are on the attack. Valente wins a corner.

11. 7'

    Figo delivers the corner deep to edge of the box for Maniche, who smashes a shot wide.

12. 8'

    Iran probe down the left flank again - maybe they see rightback Miguel as a weak link. But Miguel drives forward and forces a block in the box to dispel that theory.

    Mahdavikia whips in a freekick. Carvalho heads clear and Portugal break with Ronaldo. The winger's cut back is behind Pauleta and the move breaks down.

14. 11'

    Mahdavikia puts good delivery into the area and Nekounam heads wide. A good chance for Iran. Set pieces might offer their best chance for a goal.

15. 12'

    Deco latches onto a deflected shot, spins and draws a great save form the Iran keeper Mirzapour, who palms the ball over the bar.

16. 13'

    Madanchi hits a brilliant cross-field pass for Hashemain, who brings the ball down but can't beat Miguel to get a shot away.

    Deco takes a short corner and then draws a foul to win a better angle to deliver the cross...

    ...It's the same Maniche routine as before but the midfielder hits his shot wide this time.

    Figo crosses from the right and Mirzapour comes off his line to punch clear. One way traffic at the moment. Iran under seige.

    Ricardo mops up yet another long-ball pass from Iran.

    Kaabi probes the right and switches play to the left after finding no way through. A good spell of possession comes to an end with another hopeful pass.

    Figo intercepts a pass and gets fouled by Nekounam, who gets booked and will miss Iran's next match.

    Deco stays on his feet for once and dances through three challenges. His through-pass catches Pauleta offside.

24. 21'

    Mahdavikia hits the ball into a danger area from the right. Hashemian tries to get on the end of it but is blocked out by two Portugal defenders.

25. 22'

    Nosrati tackles Deco and Iran have a three on three break. But the defender stands on the ball and Portugal recover.

    Nosrati wins a freekick on the left. Goalkeeper Ricardo punches the cross off the head of Hashemian.

    Valente attempts to pick out lone striker paulette, but his pass is overhit.

    Nekounam loses possession. Ronaldo beats the leftback, but slices his cross out of play with players waiting in the box.

    Figo, who has switched to the left flank, beats his two defenders but his cross is poor and is cleared by Rezaei.

    Figo delivers a corner from the left. Carvalho leaps highest but glances his header wide. That was a good chance for Portugal.

    Hashemain smuggles the ball through the Portugal defence for Teymourian to latch onto. The midfielder smacks a shot against the post but the flag is up for offside.

    Madanchi gets booked for a foul on Ronaldo.

    Figo can't beat the rightback Kaabi, but he does win a corner. Ronaldo goes close with a header from the set piece.

    Portugal are knocking at the door but can't seem to get that vital goal.

    Ronaldo skips inside the fullback and smashes a left foot shot into the side netting. Surely only a matter of time before the goal comes...

    Figo is down clutching his face after being kicked by Karimi. A Karate kick of the highest grade!

    A few squirts from the magic water bottle and Figo is back in the pitch...will he be up for a little bit of retribution?

    Teymourian wins a throw deep in Portugal's half. There is a lot of huff and puff on the flank but nothing comes from it.

    Maniche blocks an Iran break by handling the ball but doesn't receive a yellow card.

    Mahdavikia attacks down the right flank. His cut back is too far behind his strikers and Figo chases back to clear for Portugal.

    Miguel falls heavily after winning a header and needs treatment. Ricardo looks concerned for his fullback.

    Miguel is back on his feet and the game resumes.

    Deco spots Miguel's run down the flank. The defender smashes a shot across the Iran goalkeeper, who gets a touch on the ball and forces it past the far post.

    Pauleta catches Iran defender Golmohammadi as he clears the ball and gets booked - largely for the reaction of Golmohammadi.

    Meira steps out of the defence and starts a break. Ronaldo goes down under pressure from Rezaei but the freekick goes the other way. Ronaldo is frustrated, as are Portugal.

46. The whistle goes for half-time with the score still level at 0-0. Portugal have made all the running but Iran have frustrated the European side and are not out of this yet.

    Portugal get us underway for the second-half. Neither team has made any changes.

    Delicate Deco battles for, and wins, the ball in midfield. That could be a good sign of Portugal's determination for this second-half.

    Deco gets a bit carried away with his new found 'hardness' and kicks an Iran player in the face as he challenges for a high ball. Yellow card.

    Mahdavikia with a great tackle on Ronaldo, who chases down the defender and wins the ball back again.

    Iran keep possession but it all gets a bit hopeful in the final third. Mahdavikia's cross is blocked.

    Some good on touch passing ends with Maniche's poor touch. Valente wins the ball back.

    Pauleta keeps the ball in play. Deco lobs a ball over the defence for the striker but Rezaei strains his neck muscles to head clear.

    Valente crosses form the left. Pauleta can only flick at the ball with his heel and his improvised shot goes wide.

    Ronaldo runs at the fullback, gains a yard, shoots at the near post and brings a great save out of Mirzapour.

    A good spell for Portugal, keeping the pressure on.

    Hashemian links up well with Mahdavikia, but he has no support and is forced to shoot. His right footed strike trickles through to the goalkeeper.

    Mahdavikia crosses from the right but Hashemian can't control the ball on the edge of the box...is this the first sign of Iran pushing forward?

    Deco goes down in a heap but the ref waves play on. Iran happy to pass it around the back four after a bit of an attack earlier.

    This is beginning to get frustrating to watch.

    Figo hits a speculative shot from 30-yards, which is saved...surprise, surprise.

    Mahdavikia breaks down the left and is hacked down by Miguel, who gets booked.

    Mahdavikia puts in great ball to the back post but Portugal manage to scramble the ball clear.

    Figo breaks down the left, Valente takes the defender away with an overlapping run but Figo cuts it back for Deco....

    ...Deco hits a sweet strike from 20-yards out that beats the keeper and nestles in the back of the net. GOAL!!!

    At last! A goal! Iran have to push forward now.

    Iran make a change. Playmaker Karimi, who has been unable to get into the game, is replaced by Zandi.

    Iran make another change and Khatibi comes on to replace Madanchi. An attacking substitution.

    It's sub central! Portugal now make a change. Maniche reluctantly goes off and is replaced by Petit.

    Meira misjudges a longball and sub Khatibi latches onto the end of it. The striker shoots from a tight angle and forces a good save from Ricardo.

    A reminder there for Portugal - a 1-0 lead can easily be lost.

    Figo falls over in the box...must have been a long blade of grass or something.

    Ronaldo wins a corner. Deco's delivery is cleared but Meira halts Teymourian's attempted break.

    Ronaldo races down the flank and Kaabi is forced to foul him. The rightback gets booked for his troubles.

    Ronaldo does 15 stepovers and wins a throw.... that is how exciting this game has become. Portugal are now conservative and Iran aren't really going for it.

    Do I speak too soon? Iran have a freekick in a dangerous position on the right of the box...

    ...Zandi strikes it straight into the wall. That is about par for the course!

    Zandi makes up for his woeful freekick with great ball from the left. Hashermian's header forces a good low save from Ricardo.

    Portugal head straight down the other end and Yahya Golmohammadi hacks down the winger. Penalty!

    Ronaldo will take the penalty. The winger steps up and smashes the ball high into the roof of the net. GOAL!!!!

    Whilst roanldo milks the applause Portugal make a change. Tiago replaces Deco. Job done for Scolari's side.

    And that's it the ref blows the final whistle....oh no he doesn't, that's just my wishful thinking.

    Portugal are going through to the next round, unless the unthinkable happens, and are happy just to keep possession.

    Khatibi is caught offside as a promising Iran move comes to an end.

    Ronaldo chests the ball down with great skill and is then taken out by Golmohammadi, who then pretends to injured to avoid a booking.

    The Iran defender is still down, so maybe I do him a wrong...

    ...Yahya Golmohammadi has now gone off the pitch clutching his shoulder but the ref still shows him the yellow card.

    After all that Portugal make their final change and take off Figo for Sabrosa. 'Figo, Figo' chant the fans.

    Five mintues after the foul occurred Ronaldo stands over the freekick.....and smashes it into the outside of the post. The keeper was scrambling.

    Teymourian takes a dive as an Iran break runs out of options. The ref awards nothing.

    Hashemian races into the box, looking for a consolation goal, but can only win a corner.

    From the corner Nekounam has a great chance to head home but his effort drifts wide of the far post. A good chance for Iran.

    It's time for the party tricks for Portugal, who are flicks and tricks now. Petit hits a shot from 25-yards that Mirzapour palms away...

    ...Pauleta smashes in a shot from the right that Ronaldo turns into the net. But the flag is up for offside.

95. That's it! The final whistle blows and Portugal are through to the next round as Iran tumble out. Not the best game, but probably the right result.
