Manchester United – Charlton Athletic

1. Sir Alex Ferguson stands by Wayne Rooney look to maintain the momentum gained from last Sunday's excellent win at Newcastle. Despite his midweek travails with England, Rooney keeps his place in United's attack following his two-goal salvo at St James' Park. There are a few notable changes to the Red Devils line-up though as Gary Neville, Gabriel Heinze and Cristiano Ronaldo are all omitted, with Wes Brown, Quinton Fortune and Ryan Giggs taking their places.

2. Shaun Bartlett is back from suspension for the visitors, who are seeking their first win at Old Trafford since 1986, but there is no place for Denmark international Dennis Rommedahl.

Rooney is penalised for a high boot on El Karkouri

16. 13'

El Karkouri finds Johansson in the area with a superb ball, but Johansson's control is woeful and Carroll claims. That's was a fine ball and a real chance

22. 19'

It's a poor match, Charlton are set-up to frustrate United and the home side seem to lack any real verve

United work it around the edge of the box without finding a route through. It eventually comes to Keane whose shot hits the offside Van Nistelrooy

24. 21'

The United crowd are getting restless, the home side look bereft of ideas at the moment

Van Nistelrooy holds it up well on the edge of the box and the lay-off finds Rooney - he gets his shot all wrong and it's simple for Kiely

32. 29'

Kishishev finds Johansson with a fine ball - but again the control is poor and it gets away from him, wasteful

33. 30'

Scholes tries a shot from 25 yards out but drags it well wide

34. 31'

This really is an awful match. I'm considering going to make a cuppa

35. 32'

Or bed is quite tempting at this point

36. 33'

Keane curls a cross in from the right, it evades every one - including the outstretched boot of Giggs - and goes behind

37. 33'

Brown finds acres of space on the right, and sees his cross knocked behind by Perry

38. 33'

Giggs takes from the right, it's flicked on at the near post and falls at the feet of Scholes who sees his shot beaten away by Kiely

39. 34'

Scholes tries some bizarre skill from Fletcher's ball into the box. Some sort of back-flick shot...

40. 35'

Free-kick top Charlton. It's lofted high into the box and falls to Murphy on the edge of the D - his first time goal-bound drive smacks into a defender

41. 36'

Free-kick to United now on the left, Scholes takes and finds the gloves of teh goalkeeper. Extremely poor

42. 37'

Not too many shopping days left to Christmas now, you know. Better get thinking of those presents

47. 41'

    GOAL!!!

48. 42'

Giggs' shot took a huge deflection off the leg of Perry and gave Kiely no chance. United have the lead - but scarcely deserve it

49. 43'

Scholes just fails to keep his header down when picked out by Van Nistelrooy's cross

50. 44'

Charlton are going to have to look at their gameplan now, they are going to have to be more adventurous

51. 45'

Thomas is brought down by Silvestre - no free-kick! The ref gives a throw-in when the United man got nowhere near the ball

52. 45'

One minute to be added on

53. 45'

And there goes the half-time whistle

54. 45'

We can only hope for a better second half. And a shot from Charlton. That was torture.

55. 46'

United begin the second period with Ruud and Rooney

56. 47'

There's a change for Charlton at the break as Chris Perry - who has pick up a thigh strain - is replaced by Jonathan Fortune

Charlton start the second 45 in a far more attacking mode, which is good to see

59. 50'

Fletcher gets it on the right, and picks out Scholes with a fine ball...

60. 50'

    GOAL!!!

61. 51'

Scholes gets his first goal since April with a superb acrobatic effort, powering home from 12 yards out. Great cross, excellent finish, 2-0 United and game over

62. 52'

Free-kick to Charlton. El Karkouri shoots from 40-yards out, it's a crazy effort and well off target

63. 53'

64. 54'

69. 59'

Free-kick to Charlton, El Karkouri lofts it into the box but Keane is there to clear with ease

70. 60'

Fletcher has been superb since the break - in total contrast to his first half display

71. 61'

You can't see a way back into the match for Charlton, they cannot step it up

72. 62'

United are just holding possession, it's that easy now.

73. 63'

Ruud's got the gloves on. It's pretty cold in Holland and this time of year so you'd think he's be used to it. Ban the gloves, I say

74. 64'

Scholes is flagged offside from Fortune's ball over the top - that was a close call

75. 65'

Charlton's yellow away kit is pretty bright so you'd think they'd be able to pick each other out. Or maybe they just can't pass...

76. 66'

United pass it around, Charlton aren't even bothered about pressurising

77. 67'

Rooney gets it and bursts into the box, he opts to cut it back rather than shoot and it comes to Scholes...

78. 68'

...Scholes fails to make the best contact, which enables the sprawling Kiely to make the stop

79. 69'

Corner to Charlton, it's taken by Murphy and Carroll comes to punch - he doesn't connect properly but it falls to a red shirt and he escapes

80. 70'

United break, Fletcher again stands a cross up to the penalty spot - Rooney makes a real hash of the shot and fires well wide

81. 71'

Ironic cheers from the Charlton fans as their side string some passes around. Ole!

82. 72'

The Addicks were in United's half but end up working the ball back to Kiely. So, so negative at 0-2

83. 73'

Scholes heads over after being picked out by Brown

84. 74'

Scholes is 30 now - which really does show how those United stars are ageing

85. 74'

El Karkouri makes a fine challenge to thwart the run of Rooney. If only Charlton had 11 players showing the same determination

86. 75'

The visitors finally put on another striker... but take one off at the same time as Francis Jeffers comes on for Shaun Bartlett

87. 76'

And there's also a change for United as Alan Smith replaces Ruud van Nistelrooy

88. 77'

Scholes sends Rooney through with a fine flick, he breaks the to the edge of the box and sees a power drive hit the sidenetting - good effort

89. 78'

Quinton Forunte feeds Rooney in the box who turns looking for the cut-back - Jonathan Forunte deflects it behind for a corner

90. 79'

Giggs takes from the left, it's flicked on by Rooney to an unmarked Ferdinand at the back stick - and he completely misses his kick

91. 80'

It's chipped back in to Alan Smith who can only head over the bar

92. 81'

Another change for United as Roy Keane is replaced by Phil Neville

93. 82'

Free-kick to Charlton on the left. Konchesky takes but it's straight to Smith and United can clear their lines

94. 83'

Charlton's kit, the ball and the ad boards are all the same colour. Fancy that.

95. 84'

Darren Fletcher's afternoon comes to an end as he is replaced by John O'Shea for the last few minutes

96. 85'

Charlton have failed to fashion a shot on target, there's no better reflection on how poor they've been

97. 86'

This game was over as soon as United scored, it's been that one-sided

98. 87'

Konchesky crosses from the left, it's nodded back across by Murphy and Young volleys over from ten yards out. That was a good opportunity

99. 88'

Corner to Charlton, Jonathan Fortune win the header but it hits Ferdiand. The ball drops to Hreidarsson - but he can only fire over with an acrobatic effort

100. 89'

Rooney shows some great control, flicking it up and then firing inches wide from 20 yards out. Great effort

101. 90'

One minute (of pain) to be added on

102. 90'

     And that's full-time

103. 90'

It was a poor game, and Charlton were truly awful. It certainly won't make a classics dvd, but United won't care as they've got a vital three points in their bid to catch Chelsea
