Manchester United – Arsenal

1. The atmosphere is building at Old Trafford as Manchester United prepare to lock horns with Arsenal in a classic Premiership fixture.

2. United will be determined to answer Chelsea's victory over Liverpool earlier with three points of their own

3. Arsenal, meanwhile, must feel that defeat in this fixture will spell the end of their title hopes just a month into the season. And few would bet on an away win

4. Edwin van der Sar is a surprise absentee. The giant Dutchman has succumbed to a stomach bug which threatened to keep him out of Wednesday's Champions League win over Celtic, so former West Brom keeper Tomasz Kuszczak was handed his debut, with untested youngster Tom Heaton named on the bench.

5. Thierry Henry is still missing and Robin van Persie is ruled out with a hip problem, further denting Arsenal's chances of avoiding defeat - and falling an incredible 13 points behind their old rivals, who include John O'Shea in midfield ahead of £18.6millon new boy Michael Carrick.

6. 1'

Referee Graham Poll checks to see how many yellow cards he has in his pocket, then gets the game underway with Manchester United on the ball

7. 2'

United enjoy the early possession, O'Shea spots the run of Fletcher into the area and here's a chance...

8. 3'

...Gallas tracks the run brilliantly and forces Fletcher to skew his shot from 12 yards out. Promising opening for the home side

9. 4'

Ronaldo cuts inside from the left flank, he's allowed space to line up the shot but it's dragged harmlessly wide of the left-hand post

10. 5'

Lehmann comes out to collect a poor ball through the middle, he's on the edge of the area to his right and picks up under pressure from Ronaldo

11. 6'

Thw whistle goes! Lehmann is adjudged to have picked it up just outside the area with referee Poll claiming to have had a perfect view. Yellow card for the Gunners' keeper

12. 7'

Replays show Lehmann was harshly treated. Ronaldo stands over the free-kick and selfishly goes for the power shot and sends it over the bar. Watseful

13. 8'

Rooney gives chase down the right flank with Gilberto. The England striker claims an elbow but there's nothing there

14. 9'

United break with Saha, he nips past Toure only to be brought down. The Frenchman would have been in the clear going into the United half and Toure is rightly the second Arsenal man to see yellow

15. 10'

Fabregas does well up against Silvestre to win a goal-kick with the baying Old Trafford crowd on his back

16. 11'

Adebayor is sent into the box, he's closing in on goal and opts to nips it past Kuszczak - the United debutant seems to bring the striker down and it's a penalty!

17. 12'

No card for the goalkeeper. Gilberto will take the penalty - it looked a dive from Adebayor - for Arsenal...

18. 12'

Saved! Gilberto lost his footing as he struck the spot-kick and Kuszczak made the stop diving away to his right

19. 13'

Arsenal come back again, looking for the opener. Adebayor has a header which goes towards the corner but it comes back off the post!

20. 14'

Gallas misses the rebound and it bobbles to the edge of the six yard box, Gilberto looks certain to score but Silverstre produces an excellent tackle the thwart the Brazilian

21. 15'

United survive a brief onslaught from the Gunners. They should be in front but the score remains 0-0, they may have to rue those missed opportunities

22. 16'

United have been rocked by that. They were very much on top before Adebayor 'won' the penalty, now they seem less sure of their play.

23. 17'

Corner to Arsenal. Rosicky takes from the left but Kuszczak comes out with confidence to punch to safety

24. 18'

Arsenal play another long ball which Adebayor nods down for the run of Rosicky. The Czech midfielder meets it first time with a rasping drive with Kuszczak does brilliantly to keep out - fantastic effort and fine save

25. 19'

Arsenal are definitely on top right now, United just can't get their passing game going and look laboured.

26. 20'

Rosicky has a speculative effort from 30 yards out, no trouble for Kuszczak there

27. 21'

Rooney backheels into the path of Ronaldo down the left flank and the Portuguese wins a corner

28. 22'

Rooney takes the corner over on the left wing, Lehmann is there to palm away

29. 23'

Ronaldo plays a superb reverse ball to send Rooney in on the left. Toure backtracks and backtracks, determined to stop the United man cutting inside, forcing Rooney to shoot on the outside and he can only drag it wide of the far post

30. 24'

United are forced into an early change as Patrice Evra comes on for Mikael Silvestre - who had been having an excellent game

31. 25'

Rooney and Evra link up on the left, with Evra winning a corner off Eboue. Rooney takes again but once more finds the gloves of Lehmann

32. 26'

Adebayor again finds himself through - great pass by Rosicky - but he looks laboured again and allows Evra to get a foot in. Adebayor then tries to find Fabregas in the box without success

33. 27'

United break and win a free-kick on the right with Eboue late on Ronaldo. It's Ronaldo to take but he can only smash it into the wall

34. 28'

It breaks out and comes to Scholes, but the former England international's header loops into the hands of Lehmann

35. 29'

Arsenal under pressure now, Ronaldo finds space just inside the area and his power effort is beaten away by Lehmann and cleared by the defence

36. 30'

This is a pulsating match - end-to-end stuff - and it's a mystery how we have not seen a goal yet

37. 31'

Ljungberg goes through the back of Fletcher but escapes a yellow card. Free-kick to United, played out wide to Evra on the left

38. 32'

Saha and Fletcher link up on the left and the Scot has a great chance to cross into the box - he can only find the netting on the roof of the net

39. 33'

Finally the match seems to have calmed down somewhat. It's almost as though both sides are playing on the break such is the pace of the game

40. 34'

Arsenal must really feel they have wasted the chance to be in command here, a missed penalty and several promising moves have come and gone without rewards. There may well be a sting

41. 35'

Rooney turns and tries to gets past Gallas only for the former Chelsea man to get a touch for the corner

42. 36'

Scholes takes the corner, playing it in low, and a melee ensues. It evertually falls to Saha but his shot is blocked by the backside of Ronaldo

43. 37'

Still the ball is loose, Rooney runs onto it but his left-footed drive is blazed over the bar

44. 38'

The dangerous Rosicky plays a short ball into the box for the run of Adebayor - Brown reads it well to clear

45. 39'

Arsenal enjoy some possession, happy to frustrate as half-time approaches

46. 40'

The half is just starting to fade now, perhaps both sides happy to take stock

47. 41'

Suddenly Ronaldo is allowed the time to come forward, he cuts inside and fires in a shot which has Lehmann scrambling to his left - but it's just wide

48. 42'

Ronaldo looks to get past Toure on the outside but the Ivory Coast defender shows great strength to block him off, turn and clear

49. 43'

Chance for United as Eboue leaves Ronaldo unmarked at the back post from Fletcher's cross, he controls and fires in a powerful effort...

50. 44'

..the shot smacks Lehmann full in the face, he knew little about the save, and the loose ball runs behind

51. 45'

Ronaldo should have scored, taking advantage of Eboue's error. Lehmann needs treatment after catching the shot full in the face but will be okay to continue

52. 45'

Scholes takes the corner, O'Shea is penalised for blocking off the run of Lehmann - but the United defender did NOTHING wrong. If anything it was a penalty. A wimp's decision from Poll

53. 45'

Four minutes will be added on

54. 45'

Eboue breaks into the United box with a fine run, he finds Adebayor who can't control but the loose ball runs to the unmarked Ljungberg...

55. 45'

...just as Ljungberg perpares to side-foot home from eight yards out Gary Neville appears with a superb sliding tackle and United survive again

56. 45'

Now United break, Neville crosses from the right and Scholes sees his shot blocked brilliant. Ronaldo's shot from the rebound is deflected behind for a corner

57. 45'

Scholes takes the corner again, Djourou is there to head away. Rooney picks it up on the right and his cross is punched away by Lehmann

58. 45'

The half-time whistle goes and somehow this match remains locked at 0-0

59. 45'

Both teams have had great chances to open the scoring, and then some, but Arsenal will perhaps be left with more regrets due to Gilberto's missed penalty

60. 46'

Arsenal get the second half started

61. 47'

Fabregas and Hleb link up on the edge of the box, Fabregas' pass flicks off the arm of Evra and it's a free-kick 20 yards from goal

62. 48'

Rosicky and Fabregas stand over it. Fabregas goes for the dink rather than the shot, Adebayor tries to get a head on it - he does but it drifts behind beyond Gilberto for a goal-kick. Waste

63. 49'

Adebayor shows skill for once to burst into the box, he gets to the byline before Ferdinand blocks his progress to give away a corner

64. 50'

Rosicky takes from the left, Scholes is there to head away

65. 51'

The loose ball comes to Fabregas outside the area but he drags it wide

66. 52'

Rooney collects just inside the D, turns and sees Ronaldo in space on the left. He looks to play in the Portuguese but Eboue sticks out a boot for a corner

67. 53'

The corner comes in from the left, it evades everyone - bouncing in the six yard box - and Arsenal come out

68. 53'

Fletcher's backheel plays in Neville on the right, but the cross is too strong for Ronaldo

69. 54'

Rosicky looks to break down the right - great, strong defending by the Irishman to get in front of the Arsenal man and win possession

70. 55'

Hleb plays it short to Adebayor, skips past Evra and opts to power in the shot from the edge of the box - but it's always rising over the bar

71. 56'

Fabregas takes out Evra with a slide challenge - free-kick but no card

72. 57'

It's taken quickly to feed in Ronaldo down the left, Eboue comes across to block the cross and it's a corner

73. 58'

Ronaldo takes the corner, again it's a good one and again it goes through the whole pack

74. 58'

Ronaldo looks to create something just inside the area, he's quickly marshalled by Eboue and Toure, forced wide and it runs out for a goal-kick

75. 59'

Gilberto tugs back Rooney, free-kick in midfield

76. 60'

The free-kick is taken quickly and played long to Saha, who flicks a header out wide for Fletcher who delivers the cross back for the Frenchan...

77. 61'

...Saha wins the header, and it drifts agonisingly wide of the far post. So, so close for United

78. 62'

Brown goes into the book for a foul on Adebayor - free-kick on the right flank. It comes in from the right and Gallas is at the back post...

79. 63'

...Gallas gets his timing wrong, the ball coming off his shoulder and harmlessly wide. A decent chance goes begging again

80. 64'

Hleb heads behind for a corner covering at right-back. Ronaldo takes it - and so does Lehmann

81. 64'

Ronaldo gives the ball away shamefully and Eboue plays in Adebayor - and he has only Ferdinand in front of him. He continues to burst towards goal as Rio backs off - and then the shot is painfully weak and easy for Kuszczak

82. 65'

Arsenal soon have the ball back, Fabregas is in the perfect position for the measured shot - which hits Adebayor on its way to goal

83. 66'

You have to wonder if we're going to see a goal now, such has been the wastefulness in promising positions

84. 67'

And then Ronaldo breaks, opts to look for Saha instead of run and gives it away

85. 68'

Hleb lays the ball over for Rosicky on the edge of the D - it's blazed wide

86. 69'

Arsenal make a change as Alexander Hleb comes off for Julio Baptista

87. 70'

Scholes gets a booking for a needless off-the-ball drag back on Rosicky - referee Poll calling back the play

88. 71'

Free-kick to Arsenal further up the pitch. It's takem short to Toure who unleashes a thunderous drive for 35 yards out which whistles inches wide of the right post

89. 72'

If any team is going to win this you'd say Arsenal are the favourites. United have lacked drive and cohesion in their play

90. 73'

If United can't muster a goal Chelsea will feel extremely happy with the day's work - beating a fellow rival while the others cancel each other out

91. 74'

It's going somewhat bitty now, you wonder if the race has been run here

92. 75'

Gilberto gives the ball away allowing Ronaldo to advance, Evra collects on the overlap and his deflected pass results in a corner

93. 76'

Ronaldo takes from the right, it's cleared back out to him and his second attempt lands harmlessly in the hands of Lehmann

94. 77'

Toure plays a neat ball through the centre to Ljungberg but the flag is up. It looks a bad decision, thought the Swede badly skewed his shot anyway

95. 78'

Double change for United as Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer come on for Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes

96. 79'

There's boos from the United faithful as two of their attacking stars are replaced, the home fans desperate to push on for all three points

97. 80'

Saha feeds in Ronaldo, it's over-hit but Ronaldo does brilliantly to chase the ball down and stop it dead on the land. He then cuts back into the area inside Gallas but his shot is blocked

98. 81'

O'Shea gives the ball away needlessly in the centre circle and Baptista can break. He keeps coming, drops the shoulder on Ferdinand and fires inches wide of the right post - close, so close

99. 82'

The atmosphere is excellent in Old Trafford, both sets of fans eager for the bragging rights

100. 83'

Foul throw by Neville, possession switches back to the Gunners

101. 84'

Fabregas gets lucky with a rebound off a United man enabling him to come forward, he feeds in Adebayor with a superb threaded pass...

102. 85'

...Adebayor looks to have misread the weight off the pass and Kuszczak could get there first...

103. 86'

     GOAL!!!!!

104. 86'

Adebayor does get to the ball first, no more than a toe-poke to put it underneath the goalkeeper and after an afternoon of frustration it's the Togo man who gets the goal

105. 87'

United swarm forward now. Solskjaer has it in the box, cuts back and produces a fine, angled shot...

106. 88'

...Lehmann goes full stretch to make a brilliant one-handed save from a shot which was heading for the corner

107. 89'

Arsenal make a defensive change - Mathieu Flamini replacing Emmanuel Adebayor

108. 90'

Three minutes to be added on

109. 90'

Carrick almost plays in Solskjaer - great interception by Toure

110. 90'

Toure's struggling - looks like the same hip injury which troubled him in Hamburg

111. 90'

Neville's long punt upfield ends up bouncing around on the edge of the area, it falls for Brown who produces a good volley...

112. 90'

...Lehmann shows good handling to collect to his right - decent effort but no problem for the keeper

113. 90'

     Time's almost up for United...

114. 90'

Arsenal break, Baptista sees his shot deflected behind for a corner and the Gunners will now run out the remaining seconds

115. 90'

And that's it! Full time! United lose at home to the Gunners against all the predictions.

116. 90'

Arsenal were the better team and deserved the victory - and could even afford a missed penalty. But the real winners today wear blue...
