   But Bresciano commits a foul on the edge of the box and Japan have an early chance.

   Nakata is behind it, but he leaves it for Nakumura, who hits the top of a tall wall.

   Takahara tries to win a corner and fails. It's a goal kick

   Schwarzer boots it forward and Australia are aiming for Viduka with the high ball, perhaps thinking their aerial ability will be an advantage.

   Grella feeds the ball forward, Viduka is in pursuit, but Miyamoto beats him to it.

    Both teams playing 3-5-2, so the midfield is fairly crowded. Wilkshire, one of many there, commits a foul.

    Alex squeezes in a low cross, but Moore reacts quickly to clear.

    A throw for the Socceroos on the right. Wilkshire takes, Emerton passes forward, but no one reads it.

    Miyamoto comes out of defence but over-hits his pass towards Yanagisawa.

    Viduka is twice denied by Kawaguchi with two well-struck efforts from an acute angle. Australia's first threat.

    The corner is aimed at Viduka, who wins his header and earns another.

    Viduka jumps with the keeper, Wilkshire hits a shot from 18 yards but the referee had blown to penalise Viduka.

    Alex and Nakata combine, but Takahara can't fnid Yanagisawa with his pass.

    Bresciano goes to the corner flag, but fails to keep the ball in play as he goes to cross.

    Emerton loses out to Nakata, who finds Yanagisawa, but the striker can't keep his long pass in.

    Chipperfield brings the ball out of defence, looks for Kewell, but Miyamoto intercepts.

    Neill concedes a corner as the persistent Yanagisawa tries to get his cross in.

    Nakumura takes the corner, Schwarzer punches it away, but is awarded a free kick anyway.

    Wilkshire whips in a cross from the right, Viduka gets ready to jump and then realises it is just too high.

    Viduka flicks it ahead of Culina, he goes down in the box, but it isn't a penalty.

    Fukunishi goes for glory from 25 yards, but his rising shot goes well over.

    Viduka, with a fine touch, gets past two, but his shot rebounds back off a defender.

    Kawaguchi tips a cross away unconvincingly, it falls to Bresciano on the edge of the box, but he can't control his shot and it goes some way over.

    Emerton is penalised, but Japan waste the free kick and Australia clear.

    Nakazawa comes forward, looks for Nakamura but only finds Moore.

    A spell of possession for Australia before Neill's long ball looks for Viduka and his determination gets a throw.

    But Kewell is crowded out and then Chipperfield is penalised.

    Kewell gets past two past and then is halted. Free kick 40 yards out.

    Bresciano chips it in, but Japan clear. Moore had come up from the back for that.

    Fine sliding challenge from Neill to halt the Japanese counter-attack.

    Wilkshire finds Viduka on the right and so far, the Australian captain has looked the most dangerous player on either side.

    Chipperfield finds Kewell who goes down rather too easily. The ref doesn't have much sympathy for him.

    An even first 20 minutes which is perhaps no surprise . Now Alex cuts infield, picks out Takahara, who twists and turns and drags his shot from 20 yards just past the post.

    Yanagisawa gets a free kick, though Grella may have got the ball. It doesn't matter as Nakamura's free kick is cleared.

    Viduka does really well to reach Emerton's pass but is outnumbered

    Now Viduka finds Bresciano with a clever flick, it's a great chance on his left foot and his sidefooted shot is palmed away by Kawaguchi at full stretch.

    The two best chances so far have gone to the Aussies, and they seem to have more cutting edge, tidy as Japan are in possession.

    GOAL! A disaster for Australia and for Schwarzer in particular. He comes for Nakamura's right-wing cross, misses it and claims the free kick as it goes into the unguarded net.

    Emerton is now in the back three for Australia with Kennedy up front. Here is his first chance, but the shot is blocked. Then Kewell gets a corner.

     The corner is aimed at the flying Kennedy who gets a glancing header, but it goes wide of goal.

     The lively Kennedy wins a free kick from the sub Moniwa on the edge of the box. A chance for Australia here.

     Viduka drives the free kick under the wall and it's a terrific save from Kawaguchi. Cahill slides in for the follow-up, fouls Komano and is booked.

     That's the closest Australia have come to drawing level and a reminder of Viduka's threat.

     Neill chips the ball forward and, with Japan struggling to deal with Kennedy, he gets the chance to shoot, but it's a tame effort.

     Kennedy and Viduka can't quite link up on the edge of the box, as they are crowded out.

     Nakamura is in space on the right, his cross is deep and Nakata is unable to hook it back to a team-mate.

     Kewell gets to the byline, looks to find Viduka in the middle and Miyamoto makes another excellent interception.

     Culina finds Kewell, but Miyamoto does well to halt him again.

     Hiddink's last throw of the dice. Off comes Wilkshire, on comes Aloisi and Australia have a huge aerial threat now.

     Takahara robs Chipperfield, charges forward, finds Yanagisawa, but his shot hardly tests Schwarzer.

     Australia are camped in the Japan half now, but Japan remain a threat on the counter-attack.

     Cahill tries a shot on the turn, it is blocked and Alosi's first contribution is to thwart a counter-attack with a tackle that brings him a booking.

     Komano finds room on the right but - as has been the case quite often from him - his cross is poor.

     Yanagisawa goes off and Shinji Ono comes on to strengthen the midfield.

     Nakazawa does well to hold off Viduka as he tries to meet a long ball.

     Now Japan come forward and enjoy a spell of pressure before a tame chip from Nakata goes to Schwarzer.

     A cross is met by the giant Kennedy at the back post, but he heads it wide.

     Lucas Neill lines up a long throw for the many six-footers in the box, but Japan - once again - defend well. The ball comes back to Neill, who tries a 30-yard shot that is predictably high and wide.

     Delicate little flick from Ono almost sends Nakamura in on goal. Grella, with an outstretched foot, intercepts, and he needed to.

     Foul by Nakazawa gives Australia a free kick within shooting range.

     Aloisi thumps it and again Kawaguchi is equal to it, parrying it away well. Good goalkeeping.

     But now Australia are level - and Tim Cahill has their first ever World Cup goal. Kawaguchi came for a long throw and missed and Cahill was on hand to turn in it.

     Cahill was only eight yards out, but his scuffed shot still went past three players - and through the legs of one of them.

     Komano goes on a solo run, skips past Cahill and is brought down. That could - perhaps should - have been a penalty.

     Aloisi's cross is just too high for the jumping Kennedy.

     Now Aloisi comes forward and Australia, with all their forwards on the pitch, aren't equipped to go for the draw.

     Neill, meanwhile, defends well from Komano's cross but it comes out to Fukunishi whose 20-yard shot whistles just past the post.

     End to end stuff, now, and Kennedy, very much a threat, almost gets the chance to shoot at the other end.

     CAHILL'S DONE IT AGAIN! Australia lead, Cahill has scored again and if the first was scruffy, that was spectacular.

     He got the ball 20 yards out, curled an unstoppable shot in via the left-hand post and the comeback is complete.

     Oguro gets his first touch but Grella robs him. Australia still have three up front, even though they now lead.

     AND NOW THEY HAVE THREE. Aloisi strolls through to sidefoot past Kawaguchi and Australia have thei first victory in the World Cup.

     Remarkable comeback from the Socceroos and all three goals have come from Hiddink's subs. Japan, who defended so well for so long, are in pieces.

     It's all over. Australia day at the World Cup as Cahill and Aloisi came from the bench to deliver victory for Guus Hiddink.
